NETworking Lightroom ... how I survive, and organize folders

fyi: I am networking my data files in LRv1 on a NAS and a USB2 drive being shared on a WinXP Pro OS.
My problem is we cannot "share" the Lightroom Database.lrdb file. (I do realize to do it right will be complicated ... if you wanted to share only "some" folders or make some folders read only) ... but I do wish Adobe would even have a simple share available.
Now, for how I do it.
First my Folder organization on my Hard Disk, I feel it is important because I want it to be the same on my HD as in LR.
* by Year
* sub-folders of the year ... by DAY
* If I have more than one shoot for the DAY ... I will make another Day folder with a slightly different name ... 2007-03-04 Model2
(and I Keyword like crazy on import of each day's shoot ... because that is the best & easiest time to keyword ... that by the way is my argument of why folders by shoot is best)
Part of the reason I have it organized in LR this way is because ... that's the way it is on my Hard Drive ... but also it is easy to have many years listed in LR and only have one year open.
* It also allows me to put only one year on some Networked computers ... LR will only have the current year imported on them (nothing else)
Also the folder and style structor is on the LR drop down menu's ... so less typing and faster on the import.
1) When I import from a CF reader ... I have LR convert to DNG from my camera's RAW file > when it does the copy to my Network Drive.
So, I end up with only one copy of the DNG files on my network NAS Drive that is being Mirrored.
So, I end up with a folder that is ... 2007\2007-03-04
2) On my Main computer ... I use a LR Library that is on my "Data drive"
D:\Adobe LIGHTROOM LIBRARY\Lightroom (also has a DEVELOPS & SORTBOX folders as per Keven Yong's tip) ... It makes it easy to find, copy and back up to the NAS.
3) I do the LR thing .. then crop, clone ... Run my Export/Actions from LR ... STACK them just soooo.
4) Then I use PowerDesk PRO (file manager) ... that can open two windows in a Pre-Set way on a click of a hot key / button ..
* one window with D:\Adobe LIGHTROOM LIBRARY ... the other window with \\Network Computer\D:\Adobe LIGHTROOM LIBRARY
* and I just copy over the whole folder.
5) I open the Network computer's LR with the D:\Adobe LIGHTROOM LIBRARY on it's local drive
6) Go to 2007 (in red) ... and FIND folder on the NAS ...
* what is COOL ... is that LR fill find ALL the sub-folder's in 2007 that I had imported on my Main Computer ... and ALL the Crops,Clone's (a given with DNG) ... but ALSO the Stacks & Virtual copys ... will be there. And it's does it pretty fast. (we are running Raid 0 on the HD)
Not truly networking LR Library as a share ... only one person on the network can work with LR at the time (IF, they are stacking or using virtual copys that we want to share)
* If, they are only doing Adjustments & Crops no problem because we are using DNG. (p.s. virtual copys need to be inside DNGs)
*** So, who ever work's on LR last needs to copy to the other's computer. (scary)
IF, anyone has a better way ... please Post it here ...
Mahalo from Hawaii ... HG

John,
LOL ... you got that right!
Basically at this point ... my share and copy of the LR library is to eliminate the need for others on the Network, to have to import folders that have already been done, and the stacks organized.
Most cases for me, I am doing all the copying of the LR Library "out" to there computers over the network. Not really having it go back to my personal one and overwriting it (so at the very least, I will not have to cry, lol).
Others on the Network (not many in my case) ... can store a personal copy of a LR library with there Name. (but, mine is the main one with the default name, lol)
Normally any Output from someone on the network, that is of value to me ... will be put on the NAS in the form of a PSD or JPG.
But, if I need more than that ... I plan to use
the tip/link given to me by Sean McCormack
"It's in the new V1 video H-G on Liminous Landscape.
He covers some of it here to: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/lighroom-illuminated.shtml"
* will just make copy of "there" LR library ... and have multipe one's so I can just flip to it and use what I need.
I am just hoping ... some "really" smart person ... will find a better workaround and tell me ... pleeeze?
The "best" I can do ... right now, is "limit" how much changes others do & have them do virtual copys for themselfs.
*** imho, most sharing issues on a "small" network can be helped if Virtual copys & clone/heal where within DNGs.
And a bonus would be, if there is a easy way to Lock all changes to the original DNG within LR via password, "except" for a Virtual Copy.
If someone invests the time to do a clone/heal on a DNG ... I want to be able to use it. That's just me. :)

  • How does Mail 4 organize folders for IMAP vs POP in sidebar?

Can someone explain how Mail organizes the sidebar for POP vs IMAP and what would happen if I switched totatlly to IMAP?
I'm a bit confused by how Mail is organizing the folders in the sidebar for an IMAP account. Way back in Panther days I had an IMAP mac.com email for a year or two and if I recall correctly I saved it in On My Mac as a folder. Same for a POP account I was getting rid of.
Since then I have had only POP accounts (including a gmail account). I managed to keep the inboxes (at least) in sync by not removing mail from the server so that my ipod, iphone, and other Macs can log into the mail server too. This has worked OK. However, since I send a lot of mail from my iPhone, I'm wondering if it's time to switch to IMAP since I will be giving up several ISP issued email addresses that only use POP.
I signed up for a new gmail account recently and it set up as an IMAP account by default. Now there's a folder for the new IMAP Gmail account at the bottom of the sidebar under On My Mac folders. It doesn't have an inbox or sent folder but does have a "sent items" folder.
Additionally, at the top of the sidebar is "Mailboxes" with Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Trash and under these are a subfolder for each POP account and also one for the new IMAP gmail. It seems weird to have the inbox and sent items so far away from the rest of the folders. I'm also not clear if it's keeping 2 copies on my hard disk one in the top mailboxes under "Sent" and one at the bottom Gmail folder under "sent items".
Finally, I'm wondering would it be prudent to back up all of the existing POP mailboxes or move everything to On My Mac before switching some of the other mail accounts over to IMAP? I will want to keep archives of the ISP emails when I cancel my service with them.
Thanks for any clarification and advice.

These settings in Mail on your Mac or other device is what you want that device to do with these folders. If you want to be able to start a message on an iPhone and finish it on your Mac, then check the setting on the iPhone to store the draft message on the server. Then, it will be available on all other devices set up with the account to finish it. You would need to set each device to the settings you wish. You really don't want to store anything useless like junk mail or trash on the server and take up server space.
    You Wrote:
As I understand it, the IMAP keeps a local cache and the servers synced. However, Mail sends email and stores it in the Sent folder and the web interface sends email from the Sent Mail folder. Can't I tell Mail to store outbound mail in Sent Mail?
As I understand it, if you send a message from your IMAP account from Mail on your Mac, it will also copy it to the Sent Items folder in IMAP to be seen from any device. If you delete it from the IMAP Sent Items folder, you won't see it on any other device. It will still be in the Sent Mail on the Mac you sent it from. That is a local folder on that particular device.
The advantage of the IMAP account is that you can control email from multiple devices either locally on them if it is set up with that account or from any browser without having to physically sync all of them together. Like you said, you have to leave the messages on the server to view them on other devices and it also takes up storage on each device.
If you want to store them locally to be saved on one computer, then move or copy them from the IMAP folder to a local folder on that computer.
As Barney suggested, enable the advanced IMAP controls in the Labs section on the gmail website settings. That will give you much more control on what you see in Mail on your Mac.
For example, after enabling this feature, I went  to the Labels section in settings on the website and unchecked all boxes to show in IMAP. the only one left is Inbox which you can't disable. When I go to Mac Mail, I don't see any gmail folders except an Inbox subfolder for gmail, a gmail subfolder for sent, and a gmail subfolder for trash.
I have also checked the box in the Mac account settings on the Trash to move deleted messages to the trash, but not store them on the server. That way, a copy goes to the trash on my Mac and it puts the subfolder in the Mail Trash.
I have also set Mail Preferences in gmail under the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab to Auto Expunge off and immediately delete messages forever. I did this to keep the gmail site clean and to give all control to my Mac since I never pull it up at the gmail website except when away on vacation.

  • How Employee groups and Organizational units are related

    Hi All,
I had a requirement for bulk upload of Appraisal documents.
    I am an ABAP Consultant.
Here client wants the Employee group as a Selection Criteria.
Based on this I had a query how can I get Organizational units from Employee group.
Actually this is my requirement and if any alternate solutions & suggestions are also welcome.
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Madhu,
Thanks for your reply, it is helpful and I need this query.
Suppose for an organizational unit there will be subordinate organizational unit.
That means how can I found whether is there any subordinate organizational unit for any organizational unit.
    Hi Ananth,
But the requirement is in selection screen only Employee group will be available.
Based on that we need to provide logic. So, I hope above solution is not helping me because they do not want to create appraisal documents person by person. Please guide me.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Pavan.

  • How I take music and organize folders off one iPod and add it to another iPod?

Hello, I'm trying to take music off of my older iPod then place it on a newer iPod and also on my older iPod. I have my music situated in different folders. I would like to keep my folders also on the new iPod can this be done? Also, I'm trying to take the music of my older iPod and place it in iTunes on a newer computer without taking the music that are already in iTunes on my new computer. If this cannot be done, I will have to go through that painstaking task of downloading all 35 GB of music on the iPod and manually do it.

Ideally you would keep all your media in a backed up iTunes library held on a computer. That way you could connect a replacement/additional iPod and quickly restore your media and settings to it.

  • Bitlocker Network Unlock - How to setup and configure

    Good Afternoon,
I have a home network running Windows Server 2012 R2 that is a domain controller. Currently the roles on the server are the following:
    - Active Directory Certificate Services
    - Active Directory Domain Services
    - DNS
    - DHCP
    - Hyper-V
    - WDS
I have a 1 test laptop connected to the domain that is currently running Windows 8.1 Professional.
I am trying to setup the Bitlocker Network Unlock feature for the laptop. I am currently following this guide posted on this link below.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574173.aspx
I have followed the guide as closely as possible and I have gotten to the part named "Step four : Create Network Unlock Certificate.
I can open certmgr.msc and can request a new certificate but it says in the guide the following
"Choose the certificate template created for Network Unlock on the Domain controller and select Enroll. When prompted for more information, add the following attribute to the certificate:"
Unfortunately I do not have anything that is remotely suitable to choose. Am I to create the certificate first so that I can access this? Can someone please advise where I should progress from here please?
    Regards,

    Hi,
Have you created certificate templates for Network Unlock usage?
To do that, we can duplicate an existed certificate template then make necessary changes on it.
More information about creating new certificate template for you:

You can also create a self-signed certificate for Network Unlock usage as the article you mentioned guides, which has less steps to perform.

  • How do the User and Shared Folders relate to the main drive? Can we delete?

I'm curious how the User and Shared folders relate to the main hard drive and if there is duplicate files in these folders and the main hard drive. Some software programs I have seemed to have loaded content/info into these folders and I'm wondering why they put files in there instead of just the regular main hard drive pathing. These 2 folders are more confusing than anything. I can see that might be of use to a family and each family member wants to keep files in a personal file, but when I'm the only one using my computer, it seems like I should have the option to remove these folders completely, but I don't because I feel like I would be deleting some important files that I wasn't aware were in these folders.
Another thing is, when I click on User folders (at least I think it's the User and not Shared folder), it brings up my name and 'Shared' in 2 seperate subfolders. Is anything in these folders duplicates of what's on my main hard drive? Is there anything significant about these folders if I'm the only user on my computer?
I would nice to get rid of clutter and to eliminate options for software to install things by deleting these folders and not have home/user/shared folders. Is that possible?

    stikygum wrote:
Yeah, I'm really low on space, so I'm going about a bunch of different consolidating options. But I mainly posted my main question to help me understand what 'stuff' is in the User and Shared folders and whether or not they act like an Alias, in order to help me make an informed decision what is best for my needs.
They are not aliases; it is a hierarchy, and there is intentional duplication at different levels. This is a feature.
First thing is that Users and Shared are at different levels. Users is at the top level, but Shared is one level inside Users, at the same level as any other user account you have created.
Therefore, if you delete the Users folder, you delete all user accounts, which means you delete all personal data. OS X probably won't even let you delete the Users folder unless you start up from a different hard drive, because you can't delete your user account while you are running in it.
Now, more about the hierarchy. The intentional duplication is so that documents and software can exist for individual users or all users. For example, there are multiple Applications folders:
Hard Drive\Applications - applications any user can see, installed at the system level
Hard Drive\Users\username1\Applications = applications only that user can see
Hard Drive\Users\username2\Applications = applications only that user can see
In the same way, there are multiple Preferences, Cookies, Application Support, etc. folders at different levels, for the same reasons.
If you do not know what you are doing and you delete one of these folders that "looks like a duplicate" you could cripple some essential part of your system or your account. That is why people are telling you not to do this.
The Shared folder is there because if you are in one user account you are prevented from seeing the files inside other user accounts. (Because you don't want other accounts to be able to see your personal data.) If you want to share files with others in your house using the same Mac, that's a problem. But the Shared folder solves this. if you want some files to be accessible to all users, like some photos or music, just put them in the Shared folder and now anyone with an account on that computer can see those shared files.
The reason shared files are not simply stored at the top level is because everything above the Users folder is supposed to be reserved for the system. User-specific are supposed to stay in the Users folder. That is why they put the Shared folder in there.
If you are not using the Shared folder and are just eyeing it because you want to free up some disk space, well, it probably won't help to delete it. Because if you are not using the Shared folder, it is probably not taking up much space, even though you see stuff in there. And if there is stuff in there taking up space, first figure out if someone put it there for a reason before you delete it.

  • Images (and image folders) in the same folder as Lightroom Catalog?

I'm just switching over from Aperture 3 to Lightroom 4.  I'm wondering if its ok (or smart) to keep the images (and image subfolders) in the same folder that the Lightroom.lrcat and Previews files are kept in.  I'm trying to better organize my Pictures folder so that there are a whole bunch of separate sub-folders.  Thoughts?

In Lightroom, there is no specific location where the photos should go. You can put them wherever you want, based upon your storage needs and hard drive setup.
So, with regards to your specific question, yes you can put the photos in the same folder as where the .lrcat is located, I can't see any harm, but I also don't think you need to do the work to make that happen. You can pretty much leave your photos where they are (which is easier and less time consuming) than moving them to the .lrcat folder, and easier and less time consuming than moving them at all.
In fact, I strongly suggest you change your thought processes from "Where do I put my photos" to "How can I organize my photos". Now that you are a Lightroom user, you organize your photos from within Lightroom, not by moving them here to there, but by adding keywords and other metadata. Organizing, now that you are LR user, is not folders ... it is metadata. Searching, now that you are a LR user, is not done in your operating system and in folders, it is done in LR by searching for keywords and other metadata.

  • How do I import an old iphoto library from an external hard disk while keeping my editing and organization in tact?

I am running iPhoto '08 on a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel C2D (MacBook Pro 3,1). I backed up my hard drive contents onto an external hard drive, then formatted my computer and installed Mountain Lion. I then re-installed iPhoto '08 and ran all the updates. Now, I would like to import my old library from the external disk onto my computer without losing my editing and organization; however, when I select "import to library" from iPhoto, the old iPhoto library is not a selectable option.
I know how to "show package contents" and import directly from the Original and Modified folders, but I don't want to lose my organization. Can I simply drag the content of those folders into my new Original and Modified folders? Will iPhoto read that correctly?
I tried to open the old library from the external disk, thinking to export them all to a folder and import from there, but that just opened my new library and none of the old photos were imported or available.
I'm running out of ideas and would appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks!!

    You don't import it.
Just drag the iphoto Library from the external to the Pictures Folder.
    Then open it:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

  • 'Creative Mediasource Organizer' Folders and the ZEN V pla

Using the Creative Mediasource Organizer, I've set up a few Folders on the 'Creative Zen V' player but when I undock the player and use it to find and play the songs, they're not organized by the Folders. In fact, I don't the folder 'structure' at all. Is there a way I can see and use my folder structure I've set up for the player? and, if not, then why does the Organizer enable me to set up folders? Thanks.

Folders on the device are merely for your own convenience and organization. The device relies solely on ID TAGS on how it plays and displays the various tracks. You will need to get your tracks in order and edit the tags.

  • How can I EXCLUDE particular folders/files from being included in the Lightroom 5 catalog?

How can I EXCLUDE particular folders/files from being included in the Lightroom 5 catalog?
I want to be able to specify paths and/or filename patterns that should NEVER be indexed in the catalog: not that they don't show up under certain circumstances, just that they are NOT THERE (in the catalog) to begin with!!
I also do NOT want to have to respecify these criteria when "synching" the catalog; criteria should be PERMANENT (or at least 'til they're changed in LR preferences).
I cannot be the only person in the world with this problem--but it sure seems like it, because I've spent an inordinate amount of time doing online searches & I can't find anything that addresses this issue.
    Can anyone PLEASE HELP me?
BTW, Adobe employees (if there are any of you out there), I'm simply trying out LR now.  If I can't get this (seemingly fundamental) thing worked out (with relatively little effort), Adobe is going to LOSE A SALE of LR, because it's useless to me without this feature.
    Thanks,
    -t

Thanks for the info... but how to you TELL LR to EXCLUDE images in a particular directory/directory structure?  The intuitive place to indicate this would be a right-click on the folder itself (or particular images), but no such option exists..  "???"  Thanks again, -pt
The same way that you avoid buying things in your local convenience store. You don't stick a lot of labels on certain shelves, slap a credit card down on the counter each week, and announce you are buying everything that doesn't have a label on its shelf. You just choose the things you want to buy.
Your mention of "synching the catalog" suggests that you are expecting the LR library, to mirror the total images in the computer by default. This is not IMO a useful way to think about it. LR contains no images at all, by default: the Catalog starts out empty.
Then you Add just those selected images that you want to import, among those already in the computer. That's a one-off process which is IMO best achieved controllably in batches - which you can keyword and otherwise organise in LR terms as you go. For new incoming images, ongoing, it is a question of Copying, Moving or Adding these in defined batches as they occur - from the relevant location only - there is no need to re-consider the import of a wider body of images. And one would not want to repeat that whole task anyway: one's prior investment in achieving the right selectivity, has a positive value.
