Images (and image folders) in the same folder as Lightroom Catalog?

I'm just switching over from Aperture 3 to Lightroom 4. I'm wondering if its ok (or smart) to keep the images (and image subfolders) in the same folder that the Lightroom.lrcat and Previews files are kept in. I'm trying to better organize my Pictures folder so that there are a whole bunch of separate sub-folders. Thoughts?

In Lightroom, there is no specific location where the photos should go. You can put them wherever you want, based upon your storage needs and hard drive setup.
So, with regards to your specific question, yes you can put the photos in the same folder as where the .lrcat is located, I can't see any harm, but I also don't think you need to do the work to make that happen. You can pretty much leave your photos where they are (which is easier and less time consuming) than moving them to the .lrcat folder, and easier and less time consuming than moving them at all.
In fact, I strongly suggest you change your thought processes from "Where do I put my photos" to "How can I organize my photos". Now that you are a Lightroom user, you organize your photos from within Lightroom, not by moving them here to there, but by adding keywords and other metadata. Organizing, now that you are LR user, is not folders ... it is metadata. Searching, now that you are a LR user, is not done in your operating system and in folders, it is done in LR by searching for keywords and other metadata.

Bridge copy and paste folders with the same name question

I just copied and pasted a folder named, as an example, "concerts" with a bunch of pictures to another drive with a folder with the same name.
I choosed "substitute" when prompted and all the pics existing in old "concerts" folder have been deleted and replaced with just the new ones.
So pasting a folder can't add files to the folder with the same name, but it completely replaces it. The other prompted option creates a "concerts (1)" new folder.
Luckyly before moving files I always do a backup, so it's not a big issue, but I'm amazed by such behaviour. Also deleted pictures don't appear in the recycle bin. They are completely lost!

Are you on Windows? don't know the options you tell, I have three options (Mac) called: 'cancel', 'replace' and 'auto resolve' when dealing with one file and for multiple files it adds 'skip' to the list and has the option for 'apply all'
Replace does what it says, it replaces files and folders with the same name, auto resolve adds a (1) to the files or other number if more with same name are added.
So pasting a folder can't add files to the folder with the same name, but it completely replaces it. The other prompted option creates a "concerts (1)" new folder.
This is normal and wished behavior, you get a warning if names are the same and a choice to either overwrite them or add them with a new (different) filename.

Heard that before but can't replicate this, they always appear in the trash on my Mac.

Can you delete images from both the Library and backup folders at the same time?

Is there a way to delete images from the Lightroom Library module and also have it delete the corresponding file in the backup folder?

Consider using a regular backup program, or plugin like TreeSyncPublisher which will assure backups are deleted along with sources.
If you really want no junk in Lr's 2nd copy storage, then delete everything there (or maybe just the older stuff), after making such "true" (synchronizing) backups.

How can I save images and text data to the same file?

I have been looking at ways to do this for a while. My main VI saves the raw data to a text file which the users then import to Excel and plot. I am trying to simplify this process and have been looking at ways to accomplish this task. I want to be able to save the raw data to a file and then save the Labview graph as well. This will eliminate the tedious task of importing the raw data into Excel and plotting it. I can save the raw data to its own file and I can use the Get Image method for the graph and save it to its own file. I am currently using the .png format. Is there a way of saving both to the same file ie, importing the image into Excel or Word etc. Before I go off doing a science project I wanted to see if anyone else had experience completing this task and had any recommendations. Thanks in advance for any help.

well ther are a couple of ways. You could use the standard report generation VI's and make a complete report with the image of the graph embedded into the report with the raw data or you could use activeX and control excel thru LV and put the raw data into excel directly and have excel graph the data without any user interaction. I have posted a slew of VI's on the excel board if you do not have the report generation toolkit. If you could tell me which way you want to go I could possibly send you an example.

How can I batch convert Page Documents to the Doc format, and keep them in the same folder?

I have hundreds of Page documents in a folder structure for school that all need to be converted, but remain within the folder structure. Are there any scripts or methods to make this task easier before I go by this one-by-one?

If you seriously expect an answer you'll need to give more information than the rather vague "can't"s so far.
What version of Pages on what version of OSX?
What exactly are the messages you are getting?
Which scripts have you tried?
Have you tried Automator and Smart Folders?

I copied my bookmarks from Favorites folder on old computer and pasted them into the same folder, same drive, and they do not appear in the Bookmarks pulldown inside Firefox. Can you help me?

If you no longer have access to that old computer then you can try to import the IE favorites or export the IE favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in Firefox.

Batch convert Pages files to Doc and stay in the same folder?

I use iWork '09 on Mountain Lion. I recently switched to Microsoft Word and prefer it over Pages (personal preference). However, I have nearly 1000 files on my computer that are in Pages format. I have extensively searched this issue in the Apple Support Communities and it appears that there are scripts that DO EXIST that batch convert Pages files into Word files. However, it appears that many of these scripts were built for older versions of iWork and therefore I run into various errors. For example, I used the script available at http://pagesfaq.blogspot.com/2008/01/export-folder-to-word-rtf-pdf-txt-or.html and click run but nothing actually happens (the script runs for less than a second, then I can click run again). I was able to use one script successfully (pasted below), but the only reason I can't use it is because it saves ALL my converted documents in one folder on my desktop and I would like a script that can save them in the original file were the Pages document is located.
So, is there an iWork '09 compatible script that can convert my Pages documents to Word documents and save them in the same folder as the original? Oh, and for an added bonus, it'd be cool if the script also deleted my Pages version after it was done with the conversion

Batch convert Pages files to doc and pdf.

Selectively Converting RAW to jpg within the same folder in LR

Not all I shoot needs to stay in RAW but it ought to stay in the same folder. Is there a batch or action process that can be performed whereby I can, say out of a 100 image shoot, keep 10 of them as RAW, the rest convert to jpg and all reside in the same folder. Is there a way to do this in LR where it will automatically update the existing folder, delete the unwanted RAW files and keep track of the jpgs? I'm trying to avoid stepping out to Bridge, perform the selective conversion, then be forced to reimport the "new" jpgs into LR.

Start with Bridge, do the things that LR doesn't presently do effectively, and that way avoid the primitive I/O features of LR--hopefully some of these workarounds will get fixed in V 1.1.
For that matter, if you have Bridge CS3, you can do virtually everything that the LR Develop module will presently do in Bridge2/ACR 4 faster than in LR (because you will avoid the LR Library and I/O bottleneck, and be able to use the better, more ergonomic, configurable UI in ACR 4)then import into LR Library. Any touch ups needed can then be routinely done, and you can use the other modules in LR for printing, etc, if those are now part of your workflow.

Running multiple batch actions on the same folder?

We run Actions on a group of images using CS4 with the File->Automate->Batch function. We use this to take, for example, 200 images from a set folder, run an action to change them into a different colour and save in a different folder, we need to do this 20 times on the same images running a different script each time to change them into a different colour and save them in the same folder (with different file extensions)
Is there a way we can instruct Photoshop to run all of these 20 scripts (one after the other in a queue as it where) without having to "Babysit" it and ask it to run each one off ourselves?

Do you use Photoshop in French?
Because Pierre has mentioned that Actions are called »Script« in French, but I think you are referring to Actiond and what I think you need in this case is a proper Script (in JavaScript preferably).

Can't install PSE11 even though files are in the same folder

I keep getting the error message that the files must be in the same folder and to download them. I've downloaded both items for windows and they're in the same folder yet I keep getting the error message. Help!

Downloading a file to the same folder as an applescript

I have never used applescript before and have what should be a simple problem.
I just want to download via FTP a file and have it in the same folder as script application.
This is what I have and it downloads what I want, but to get it where I want. This puts it in my home directory. I think "path to me" needs to come in here somehow. Now I am dumb so probably need the whole script!! thanks.

How to import nef and psd versions of the same file ?

Hi, I am new to this so please forgive any daftness. I am trying to import from a folder with nef and psd versions of the same file. Lightroom does not seem to recognise the nef if a psd exists. In fact if I specifically try to import the nef later, I get the message that says lightroom will not import the file because it already exists. The import is set to keep the originals in the existing location and the database is new. This is the first import I have done and noticed that the file count did not match.
I need to do this because I need to create alternative psd files from the same raw file but I do not see how.
The psd were created via the bridge to photoshop route.
Please what am I doing wrong ?

Hi thanks for the quick reply. For a "database" application that seems a bit scary. Also I have found that it will import psd and tif and jpg versions of the same file which makes it even odder.
Do you know if there is a way to tell it to favour nef rather than psd ?

As web-weaver alluded to previously, the -2-2-2 is the mark of Lightroom renaming a file to resolve a filename conflict. - in a nutsell: if it needs to write a file, but the name is already taken (a file of that name already exists in the folder) it appends -2 (yes, it may be -3 or -4 too depending - but I shan't explain all here).
For the record, I never want Lightroom to append a -1, -2, -3 ... to *any* of my files, be they catalog, photo, or export... This feature is for people who use computers without understanding about files, or folders, or disks... - which is cool, but in my case, any time Lr is doing that it's the wrong thing to do.
i.e. if there is a filename conflict - I want to be involved in resolving it.
Worth noting: there are 2 things that can happen in Lightroom:
1. Proper automatic resolution of legitimate filenaming conflicts (by appending -digit uniqueness suffix).
2. Improper automatic resolution of un-real filenaming conflicts due to Lightroom bugs/confusion. e.g. renaming a file will sometimes add the suffix even though there is no filename conflict.
Bottom line: If images are unlinking themselves and renaming themselves (and you didn't do it, inadvertently outside Lightroom, or in...), then there is a bug in Lightroom. If that is the case, then such bug may very well have been set off by some anomaly in your computer/file-system/catalog... - worth considering that.
If this is a bug in Lightroom, consider reporting it via the link below, along with as much info as you can about how it happened, how to reproduce...

Check your userid autorecovery folder after you close Photoshop. If there are psb files in it delete them

Just purchased a ipod and trying to import my music collection. When I have imported some artist have duets with others and those are going in seperate folders not the same as the artist. How can I put all the music in the same folder

have alot of music to import and some of the artist are not in the same folder. like elton john who has duets with others. is there anyway to put all the music in same folder and not have several folders for same artist

If you right click on a son in iTunes and click Get Info. Under the Sorting tab iyo can change how the songs is sorted in iTunes
Tips for using song and CD info to organize your music
You can edit information in the Info window to make it easier to find and sort items in your library. For example, you can:
Group individual movements on a classical CD into one work by indicating the name of the work (for example, “Piano concerto in A Minor, Op. 54”) in the Grouping field.

Does the non-syncing songs play in iTunes on the computer?
is there anything different about the songs that do sync and those that do not? Like where they cam from? The format (Get Info>under the File tab).
