New BASH ShellShock Security Bug - bigger than Heartbleed!

Woke up this morning to this: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/09/24/bash_shell_vuln/
A bug discovered in the widely used Bash command interpreter poses a critical security risk to Unix and Linux systems.
You can check if you're vulnerable by running the following lines in your default shell, which on many systems will be Bash. If you see the words "busted", then you're at risk. If not, then either your Bash is fixed or your shell is using another interpreter.
env X="() { :;} ; echo busted" /bin/sh -c "echo completed"
env X="() { :;} ; echo busted" `which bash` -c "echo completed"
Scanned systems internally and found the following were affected:
Cisco VCS devices (x7 and x8)
Cisco MXE 3500
Cisco DMM and SNS (assuming since running Red Hat Enterprise but unable to verify)
Jabber Guest
TCS Endpoints (6 or below have been verified, unable to verify 7 but assume vulnerable)
Cisco Conductor
Cisco has also just posted a security advisory:
http://tools.cisco.com/security/center/viewIpsSignature.x?signatureId=4689&signatureSubId=0&softwareVersion=6.0&releaseVersion=S824

Yup. MXP based Codecs are vulnerable.

  • WLC - Bash ShellShock Security Bug

Cisco has said that the WLC are vulnerable, i am trying to understand how much and in what scenario.
From what i have read only cgi pages are vulnerable, so i guess that a WLC cant be compromissed without a valid authentication in the GUI.
I have run some tests in a Lamp server and i can run code on it via the exploit , but when i run the test on the login page of the WLC i cant run the command (ping x.x.x.x).
So it seems that although the bash has the vulnerability it cant be exploited via web, at least not before a user is authenticated or at least not the way i am testing...
PS - I havent tested the guest portal login and logout page for this vulnerability.
So the big question is can we live with the Wlc in production  without restrictions until a patche comes?
Can we use the Guest authentication portal ?

  • Suggested defense against the new "Bash bug"?

I am looking for suggestions on how to protect my Mac OS X Server from the new "Bash bug" that has just been announced today. The bug affects Mac OS X, Linux and Unix.
I run a simple web server, nothing fancy. Only HTML, PHP and MySQL. The only open ports are TCP port 80 for web hosting and 3306 or MySQL access.
Any suggestions, advise, insights, et cetera is appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • Bash Shellshock

    ONE topic, TWO questions:
Is Apple close to releasing a patch to protect OS X users from the Bash Shellshock exploit?
Is there anything I can do by way of settings to protect my own machine, other than simply not launching the Terminal app?
I am often in need of using SSH to access servers. I can do some (but not ALL) of the things I use Terminal for by other means, but it is slow and cumbersome, and I have business reasons for not wanting to be slow and cumbersome. My servers have already been patched. The Linux world has reacted very quickly to making this right. I have 4 Apple computers which represent a heavy investment in Apple products. I have also invested my reputation in Apple, recommending them to any of my clients who asks for my opinion. I actually had someone laugh at me yesterday.
I searched this user forum for anything related to "shellshock" before posting this thread. Nothing came up. I am very surprised if nobody has asked this question yet. Hmmmmm........

Ralph, thank you for the reply. I already knew that the OSF had released the patch. Like I said, both of my Linux servers have been patched. What I don't understand is why it is taking so long for Apple to push that out to its OS X users. The Linux world is huge. If OSF can push out the patch as quickly as they did, it seems to me like Apple should have been able to be just as quick. The only reason I can think of for the delay is that there is some kind of conflict involving the GNU license and Apple's integration of it into their proprietary operating system. If that's the case, then it seems like it is the lawyers that are getting in the way of what should be a fairly simple thing to fix.
My Remote Login is set to "Off" by default, as are the rest of my Apple machines. Also, I am very careful with email attachments. BASH/Shellshock is wormable (http://blog.erratasec.com/2014/09/bash-shellshock-bug-is-wormable.html). Also by default, I never open something that I wasn't expecting in advance and my SPAM filters are set to "kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out", so I am very unlikely to open an attachment that would install a worm. Even so, I would like to know that Apple has taken steps so that I can get back to worrying about my business instead of worrying about my computers.
I still think they are superior machines, but Apple's failure to deal with the problem as quickly and easily as the open source community was able to do so is a PR black eye; and the longer they wait to release a patch, the bigger and darker that black eye gets. If there truly is very little risk, then they should release a statement saying so, so that their user base can stop worrying about it. The silence is deafening, and it does nothing to settle anyone's fears. Apple's management are not stupid people, and the fact that they have NOT released such a statement supports the probability that there IS some risk. If there IS some risk, then WHY have they not dealt with it quickly? ......and again, since the fix is simple, we're back to the lawyers.....
Steve Jobs would have never put up with this.

  • Ongoing fatal crash and security bug related to connecting external display

The infrastructures in OS X to resume from sleep, to authenticate, and to change displays is fundamentally not working.
The security bug I have encountered has to do with connecting a cinema display exclusively to a MacBook Pro. This is a specific situation, but please note that I have experienced the same problem on no fewer than three independent laptop. Plus, the Genius in the Apple Retail Store was convinced of the general instability of this infrastructure. The security problem is that hot corners no longer function if I transition between two states in the same reboot. The first state is where I have the laptop powered on and using its own internal display exclusively (when I'm on the road). The second state is when I have the laptop displaying its output exclusively on an external display (when I'm at home). What happens is that an attempt to use hot corners fails. There is no response. I even added configuration on all four corners (whereas I originally had settings only for the rightmost corners), and even then, the hot corner action (of sleeping the display or entering locked screen saver mode) does not commence. This prevents the user from being able to secure the display on demand using standard methods that are supposed to work.
The instability level related to connecting the external display exclusively is high. Again, I've experienced this on no fewer than three independent laptops, and the Apple Genius at the Retail Store confirmed that this aspect of OS X did not work consistently. When I want to connect the cinema display to the laptop in such a way that the laptop's own display is not part of the active screen, the process I use succeeds about half the time. Supposing I have been on the road, where I am using the laptop display exclusively. I then put the laptop to sleep. When I return home with the lid open, I connect first the USB (power) from the cinema display to the laptop, and then I connect the Mini DisplayPort. When that step works, what happens is that the login screen shows on the cinema display despite the fact that my laptop lid is closed. This is good, and is what I want. At that point, I open the laptop lid and quickly log in.
With Apple being a mobile device company, I rely on the laptop for tasks that one traditionally may use a desktop for. This simply points to the versatility of the laptop. But I'd like the bugs resolved, so that I do not have to hesitate to make use of the inherent flexibility possible with the MacBook Pro.
Here's what happens when the process (of connecting the external display in a way that establishes itself as the only screen in use by OS X) fails. Firstly, when I connect the external display via Mini DisplayPort, the laptop doesn't even respond. Instead, it remains asleep. So to work around it I have to repeatedly disconnect and reconnect the Mini DisplayPort so that the asleep MacBook Pro will see that there is a display connected to it. Also, sometimes that isn't even enough and I have to open the laptop lid, and put it to sleep again so as to trigger whatever actions are necessary to recognise the external display (presumably by having the laptop recently awake). Around half the time, I have to play this game of disconnecting and reconnecting until it actually works. This high level of reproducibility (confirmed by the Apple Genius representative's confidence that this part of the system doesn't actually work) should make it easy for an engineer to look into the problem.
Fatally, and recently, OS X has completely crashed when I have attempted to connect the external display. The external display has gone completely blue, and after a half a minute, it blanked out and my entire laptop became unresponsive. I called Apple Support and was given a case number. I also took the laptop into the retail store to see if I could recover my current session without rebooting. There was no process suggested to make that happen and I was told to reboot the machine. I've had this happen before on other laptops, and it is frustrating that the kernel reaches such a state that it cannot be used. As I see it, this problem is not too unrelated to the way that I need to play a game in order to get the external display connected exclusively. Here are some workarounds that could be added:
Firstly, whenever I connect an external display, I'd like the laptop to see that this has happened, and to take action accordingly (such as resuming from sleep). Secondly, If I connect an external keyboard, and press a key on it, I'd like this to wake the laptop too (in the event that the first method fails for some unforeseen reason). I'd also like the connection of the cinema display's USB power not to cause the laptop to enter into a confused state between asleep and awake. Sometimes I need to disconnect and reconnect USB power in order to trigger the laptop into waking, but that's only because it's not doing it on its own properly. On the other hand, I also ensure that the laptop doesn't have the Mini DisplayPort connected without also having the cinema display USB power connected, because that also is an unsupported configuration.
I've also gotten the laptop to become confused about whether it is asleep or awake. When I open the lid, it seems to enter into sleep mode, but closing it seems to bring it into an active state.
Also, I've successfully logged on and authenticated with the screen showing exclusively on the external display. But just ten seconds after I start using the system, the laptop falls asleep--with the lid open! Whatever triggers that action doesn't seem to be on track. The laptop is open, there are incoming events such as mouse movements and key presses, and the external display is on and is in use. And then the laptop falls asleep! This has happened numerous times. Not only should this not happen; the instances where it does happen can cause further instability and put my system at risk of fatally crashing.
Also, the authentication system itself is highly buggy--far more than it should be. At times I have opened the laptop lid and caught a glimpse of a window before I have begun the login process. Also, an external authentication application that asks for Kerberos/AFS login credentials has been able to overlay itself on top of the primary authentication (whereas I should only see a single login dialog when I need to authenticate to the system). Also, I've had several of these authentication screens overlay on top of one another, although it's been months since I've experienced that one (so it may have been fixed). Also, around a third of the time, the window that authenticates me (on the black background) somehow transfers itself into the background (even though there's only one window!). What that means is what I begin to type my password, and now the laptop starts beeping at me and I need to manually click on the password field and begin entering my password again. This really shouldn't happen, and indicates too much complexity in this authentication process (such as, more OS X code is involved than is strictly necessary, which is likely to make the authentication system more difficult to test). Also, at times, I have been using too much CPU, such that the authentication screen takes too long to emerge. That also means that I'm not able to logon until I uncleanly shutdown the laptop. If the laptop has been asleep, and is revived in preparation for login, then that login screen should be given highest priority, even if there are other heavy CPU or I/O intensive tasks running in the background. And maybe the login dialog shouldn't disappear when the user is legitimately attempting to log in. So even if there is a possibility that the system is under heavy resource use (or there is a stall or minor deadlock), it shouldn't prevent the user from logging in altogether.
At the moment, the very fact that the system shut down uncleanly means that the full disk encryption suite that I used has entered into an undetermined state, suggesting I may lose access to all my data. It's my hope that I can rely on Apple's products to interoperate in a way that won't cause me to be fearful and restrictive in my use, so that I can freely connect an external display at times, and at other times carry the laptop on the road.

Ive got the same problem with Samsung UE225010 monitor too, its full hd but it looks terrible, could it be Displayport adapter issue, because couple month ago Ive tryed with some IPS display, and it looked same bad.

  • What happens when an iPod is synchronized with an iTunes library that is bigger than the available space on the iPod?

What happens when an iPod is synchronized with an iTunes library that is bigger than the available space on the iPod? I did this some time ago. On screen was shown available space somewhat less than 120 GB, but maybe somewhere between 10 and 20 GB more in the library. I had to get the iPod updated anyway, so I did proceed. However, afterwards the total content of the library was only about 110 GB. Now I wonder what did actually happen. Was the first sign only corrected for double copies of the same files or lost files or where files deleted from iTunes? And if files where deleted from iTunes, were they also deleted from my computer?

Same as you would if you bought a pc; copy everything from your old computer to your new one.  Then you can just sync everything from the new computer, as you did with the old one.

  • HT201361 Whenever I take a screenshot on my Macbook Pro, it always comes out bigger than the area I selected. How do I fix this??

I just got a Macbook Pro for Christmas, replacing my old 2008 one. On my old one, I was able to screen grab (shift+command+F4) specific area sizes (like 500x500 area) and the picture it would export would also be 500x500. On this new Mac, the areas I screen grab are exported larger than they are when I take them. For instance, I'd take a screen grab of a 500x500 picture I drew, upload it to an image sharing website, and it would appear nearly double that size.
I've tried altering my display to see if that helps, but they always are bigger than what I grab.
    Any help would be great.

To anyone who may have this problem, I figured it out. Retina display makes it bigger than it actually is. To fix this, after each screenshot, open up the image in preview. There will be a little toolbox option, and within that a box with arrows in it. Set the dimensions to 50 rather than 100 and it should be good to go.

  • I want to format my hard drive so i can have files bigger than 4GB what format should I use?

I have a new hard drive that I want to format so it will work with both mac and PC (windows) but I have files that are bigger than 4GB, what format should I use?
It needs to work with both PC and mac because I need to go between two computers etc

If both of these computers are connect to the same router, both are in your home or place of work (Both are in the same location), it is very easy to Network them so you don't have to use DropBox or the external drive to share files between them.

I have a LONG column and when I call updateCharacterStream via the resultset I get the following error:

I am trying to update the column with a value that is 2391 in length. The column is defined as a LONG so it is plenty big enough.

If I use a UTF-8 database it works OK. But if I use a db that is on the default character set I get the error. There are NO multibyte characters, I just happened to test it against my unicode db and it worked.

  • Make JFrame bigger than screen size

I have a JFrame which has several components. I need to print all the contents of this JFrame, but to do that I need to be able to make the JFrame bigger than the screen's resolution.
When I change the size of my JFrame to anything bigger than the screens resolution it will just resize to the maximum resolution of my screen
I tried with jFrame.getToolkit().setDynamicLayout(false); but it didn't seem have any effect
This is the code I'm using for this:

  • Why Index size is bigger than table size?

    Dear All,
I found in my database my tables sizes is coming around 30TB (All Tables in Database). and my index size for the same is 60TB. This is data ware housing environment.
How the index size and table size are differing?
Why they are differing? why index size is bigger than table size?
    How to manage the size?
Please give me clear explanation and required information on the above.
    Regards
    Suresh

There are many reasons why the total space allocated indexes could be larger than the total space allocated to tables. Sometimes it's a mark of good design, sometimes it indicates a problem. In your position your first move is to spend as little time as possible in deciding whether your high-level summary is indicative of a problem, so you need to look at a little more detail.
As someone else pointed out - are you looking at the sizes because you are running out of space, or because you have a perceived performance problem. If not, then your question is one of curiosity.
If it's about performance then you should be looking for code (either through statspack/AWR or sql_trace) that is performing badly and use the analysis of that code to help you identify suspect indexes.
If it's about space, then you need to do some simple investigations aimed at finding a few indexes that can be "shrunk" or dropped. Pointers for this are:
    select
            table_owner, table_name, count(*)
    from
            dba_indexes
    group by
            table_owner, table_name
    having
count(*) > 2   -- adjust to keep the output short
    order by
count(*) desc; This tells you which tables have the most indexes - check the sizes of the tables and indexes and then check the index definitions for the larger tables with lots of indexes.
Second quick check - join dba_tables to dba_indexes by table_name, and report the table blocks and index leaf blocks in desending order of leaf block count. Look for indexes which are very big, and also bigger than their underlying tables. There are special cases (and bugs) that can cause indexes to be much bigger than they need to be ... this report may identify a couple of anomalies that could benefit from an emergency fix followed (possibly) by a strategic fix.
