Ongoing fatal crash and security bug related to connecting external display
The infrastructures in OS X to resume from sleep, to authenticate, and to change displays is fundamentally not working.
The security bug I have encountered has to do with connecting a cinema display exclusively to a MacBook Pro. This is a specific situation, but please note that I have experienced the same problem on no fewer than three independent laptop. Plus, the Genius in the Apple Retail Store was convinced of the general instability of this infrastructure. The security problem is that hot corners no longer function if I transition between two states in the same reboot. The first state is where I have the laptop powered on and using its own internal display exclusively (when I'm on the road). The second state is when I have the laptop displaying its output exclusively on an external display (when I'm at home). What happens is that an attempt to use hot corners fails. There is no response. I even added configuration on all four corners (whereas I originally had settings only for the rightmost corners), and even then, the hot corner action (of sleeping the display or entering locked screen saver mode) does not commence. This prevents the user from being able to secure the display on demand using standard methods that are supposed to work.
The instability level related to connecting the external display exclusively is high. Again, I've experienced this on no fewer than three independent laptops, and the Apple Genius at the Retail Store confirmed that this aspect of OS X did not work consistently. When I want to connect the cinema display to the laptop in such a way that the laptop's own display is not part of the active screen, the process I use succeeds about half the time. Supposing I have been on the road, where I am using the laptop display exclusively. I then put the laptop to sleep. When I return home with the lid open, I connect first the USB (power) from the cinema display to the laptop, and then I connect the Mini DisplayPort. When that step works, what happens is that the login screen shows on the cinema display despite the fact that my laptop lid is closed. This is good, and is what I want. At that point, I open the laptop lid and quickly log in.
With Apple being a mobile device company, I rely on the laptop for tasks that one traditionally may use a desktop for. This simply points to the versatility of the laptop. But I'd like the bugs resolved, so that I do not have to hesitate to make use of the inherent flexibility possible with the MacBook Pro.
Here's what happens when the process (of connecting the external display in a way that establishes itself as the only screen in use by OS X) fails. Firstly, when I connect the external display via Mini DisplayPort, the laptop doesn't even respond. Instead, it remains asleep. So to work around it I have to repeatedly disconnect and reconnect the Mini DisplayPort so that the asleep MacBook Pro will see that there is a display connected to it. Also, sometimes that isn't even enough and I have to open the laptop lid, and put it to sleep again so as to trigger whatever actions are necessary to recognise the external display (presumably by having the laptop recently awake). Around half the time, I have to play this game of disconnecting and reconnecting until it actually works. This high level of reproducibility (confirmed by the Apple Genius representative's confidence that this part of the system doesn't actually work) should make it easy for an engineer to look into the problem.
Fatally, and recently, OS X has completely crashed when I have attempted to connect the external display. The external display has gone completely blue, and after a half a minute, it blanked out and my entire laptop became unresponsive. I called Apple Support and was given a case number. I also took the laptop into the retail store to see if I could recover my current session without rebooting. There was no process suggested to make that happen and I was told to reboot the machine. I've had this happen before on other laptops, and it is frustrating that the kernel reaches such a state that it cannot be used. As I see it, this problem is not too unrelated to the way that I need to play a game in order to get the external display connected exclusively. Here are some workarounds that could be added:
Firstly, whenever I connect an external display, I'd like the laptop to see that this has happened, and to take action accordingly (such as resuming from sleep). Secondly, If I connect an external keyboard, and press a key on it, I'd like this to wake the laptop too (in the event that the first method fails for some unforeseen reason). I'd also like the connection of the cinema display's USB power not to cause the laptop to enter into a confused state between asleep and awake. Sometimes I need to disconnect and reconnect USB power in order to trigger the laptop into waking, but that's only because it's not doing it on its own properly. On the other hand, I also ensure that the laptop doesn't have the Mini DisplayPort connected without also having the cinema display USB power connected, because that also is an unsupported configuration.
I've also gotten the laptop to become confused about whether it is asleep or awake. When I open the lid, it seems to enter into sleep mode, but closing it seems to bring it into an active state.
Also, I've successfully logged on and authenticated with the screen showing exclusively on the external display. But just ten seconds after I start using the system, the laptop falls asleep--with the lid open! Whatever triggers that action doesn't seem to be on track. The laptop is open, there are incoming events such as mouse movements and key presses, and the external display is on and is in use. And then the laptop falls asleep! This has happened numerous times. Not only should this not happen; the instances where it does happen can cause further instability and put my system at risk of fatally crashing.
Also, the authentication system itself is highly buggy--far more than it should be. At times I have opened the laptop lid and caught a glimpse of a window before I have begun the login process. Also, an external authentication application that asks for Kerberos/AFS login credentials has been able to overlay itself on top of the primary authentication (whereas I should only see a single login dialog when I need to authenticate to the system). Also, I've had several of these authentication screens overlay on top of one another, although it's been months since I've experienced that one (so it may have been fixed). Also, around a third of the time, the window that authenticates me (on the black background) somehow transfers itself into the background (even though there's only one window!). What that means is what I begin to type my password, and now the laptop starts beeping at me and I need to manually click on the password field and begin entering my password again. This really shouldn't happen, and indicates too much complexity in this authentication process (such as, more OS X code is involved than is strictly necessary, which is likely to make the authentication system more difficult to test). Also, at times, I have been using too much CPU, such that the authentication screen takes too long to emerge. That also means that I'm not able to logon until I uncleanly shutdown the laptop. If the laptop has been asleep, and is revived in preparation for login, then that login screen should be given highest priority, even if there are other heavy CPU or I/O intensive tasks running in the background. And maybe the login dialog shouldn't disappear when the user is legitimately attempting to log in. So even if there is a possibility that the system is under heavy resource use (or there is a stall or minor deadlock), it shouldn't prevent the user from logging in altogether.
At the moment, the very fact that the system shut down uncleanly means that the full disk encryption suite that I used has entered into an undetermined state, suggesting I may lose access to all my data. It's my hope that I can rely on Apple's products to interoperate in a way that won't cause me to be fearful and restrictive in my use, so that I can freely connect an external display at times, and at other times carry the laptop on the road.
Ive got the same problem with Samsung UE225010 monitor too, its full hd but it looks terrible, could it be Displayport adapter issue, because couple month ago Ive tryed with some IPS display, and it looked same bad.

50% CPU load @ Boot: nmbd crash and reload bug
I have seen several threads here and around the net about samba on OSX using over 50% of the CPU without showing up in the activity monitor OR in top on the command line. While this is easily solved by unchecking the Windows Sharing service under System Preferences -> Sharing, this is not a fix. It just hides the problem, samba is still broken, and those of us who actually need windows interoperability are left with a machine that gets very hot, has poor battery life, and performs sluggishly.
Don't get me wrong, I am grateful to the people who actually found out what the problem is and how to get around it for a bit, but the problem is not "solved".
I've used *nix flavors for several years now and I have never seen this problem before. After having a MacBook for 8 days, I am now very frustrated.
So, what do we do to FIX the problem? An hour and a half on the phone with Apple Tech Support and I've learned that this problem has persisted through OSX 10.1 - 10.4.6, x86 and PPC. One person in these forums is trying (unsuccessfully I might add) to rebuild samba from scratch (for a different reason, they need ldap support: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2166703I just diagnosed this problem on my new MacBook. I had seen that suddenly my CPUs would peg for no reason. Finally after a few days of frustrating work trying to identify the offending program I noticed that nmbd would be launched time and time again as a root process and the CPU load would correspond with it, but its process would not be shown consuming the cycles. Looking up what nmbd did I killed Windows file sharing and the problem was resolved. Looks like the program crashes and causes all of the load on the CPUs, but a debugger never comes up or message from the Finder saying it crashed. It was only consuming 1.25megs of RAM on my system before the problem would happen over and over. Looking on my friends MacMini with identical specs to my MacBook, his constantly uses about 3.58 megs of RAM. Process broken on MacBooks only? Dunno...
Yes it *****, but at least I know my computer isnt actually busted like I was beginning to suspect nor was it any of the various beta programs / haxies I may have been running. (Since all of them were gone once I did a clean install.) Maybe 10.4.7 will address it? -

Windows 7 Bootcamp and Thunderbolt to VGA Adapters for External Displays MacBook Pro i5?
Is it possible to connect an external moniter to a MacBook Pro using a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter in Windows 7 (professional)? I have tried and tried, when booting, both moniters (both laptop and external) show the "Starting Windows" page, but the external blacks out on the user selection screen. That gives me hope... is there a driver out there that will let me use the external display in Windows 7?
MacBook Pro
i5, 4gig, 750gig.
Windows 7 Pro
Mac OSX Lion
LG Flatron Wide
DisplayPort to VGA adapter (not apple brand, purchased on eBay).
Thanks. You shouldn't require a driver. I would try booting as usual, then plugging in your external display. In windows, you can hit "command-P" to toggle between your external display options (mirror, extend, etc.). Once you do that, you should see the new display show up.

Fatal crash and damaged connections
Hi,
I was running a long query in an unshared connection, then opened a table and tried to switch to the Data tab, but sqldev froze.
I thought it was either some regression bug on locking the UI until the query finished, or the other type of deadlock I am frequently experiencing.
However, sqldev never came back. A stack dump apparently revealed some new stuff, so maybe this is different:

No shared spaces configured. At the end, I had to kill sqldev. But on restarting, my connections couldn't get loaded.
Upon further investigation, I found the connections.xml truncated! The last entry was part of the second last connection:

Luckily copying the xml from the conserved previous version finally restored my connections.
How could all this happen???

Random Crashes and Reboots (RAID related?)
Built a computer approximately 2 weeks ago with the specifications listed below. It was not being used, though it remained on and seemed to run fine. Today, MS Office was installed, and the computer was set up at the user's workstation.
Sometimes without warning, sometimes the mouse would freeze for 2 seconds, but the computer has taken to "randomly" rebooting itself. I have not been able to figure out why. But I have some ideas:
During boot up, I can hit to enter and see:
VIA TECH. VT8237 SATA RAID BIOS VER 4.00
NOTICE: The number of disks is not adequate to create a RAID.
Channel...................Drive Name...............Array Name.....Mode.....Size.....Status
Serial _CH0 Master...WDC WD360GD-00FN.......................SATA.....34.47....Hdd
Serial _CH1 Master...No Drive
I can not move around using arrows, etc in that screen to edit the number of HDDs installed. I only have one at the moment.
After several (hundred) reboots, I was able to get back into windows and it was nice enough to tell me that my system had recovered from a serious error. The error code is:
BCCode : d1 BCP1 : 00000030 BCP2 : 00000007 BCP3 : 00000000 BCP4 : F77819A0 OSVer 5_1_2600 SP1_0 Product 256_1
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading,

Fair enough .. but when I bought the case (with PSU from NewEgg), the specs are not more refined than "380W".
From the MSI website:
Verify that power supply is of the appropriate wattage for system.
• 300 WATT minimum recommended for most ATX form factor systems.
• On high end systems with fast video card, fast CPU, RAID HD array may require a larger power supply such as a 350 watt.
From the ATI website:
RADEON® 9800 Series of products requires connection to your PC's internal power supply for operation. Consult your system builder or OEM to ensure your system has an adequate power supply. Otherwise, ATI recommends a 300-Watt power supply or greater to ensure normal system operation where a number of other internal devices are installed.
So, as it seems now, with the PSU being the issue .. well I'm pissed off. -
My iphone4s has ios 7.0.4 crashes and will not let me connect to wifi
On december 26th, I was having trouble with my wifi connection. I was on the phone with someone and my phone completely shut off and restarted itself. I checked to see if I could finally reconnect to the wifi but it was grayed out. I tried different things like turning the phone off and on, resetting the network settings and turning the wifi off and turning it back on (When it was not grayed out) but it just made my phone would crash even more and for a while I wasn't able to read texts and whenever i went to turn on my wifi it would either freeze, crash again or it would load the networks or the wifi would still be grayed out. If anyone is having trouble like I am, please let me know.
P.S. This a replacement phone that I had just bought bout a month ago. The last one had similar problems and stopped working completely. I'm hoping this is not the same problem.Hi. I'm having the same problems. I have even erased my phone. Nothing seems to work but the idea of the iOS 7.0.4 been the problem fits. All over internet about it. Any ideas on how to fix it?
-
Firefox crashed. Closed all my windows - did the auto update thingy with accompanying message. Brought up the windows that had closed as usual - all said "problem loading page". Firefox will now not connect to internet. It's not a problem with my connection etc - internet explorer is working fine. Anyone else have this problem today?
So, it's been 13 hours now and no answers. From reading the Airport Discussion board "
Airport has a self assigned IP address, 169.254.175.198 and will not be able to connect to the internet"
is a very common problem and I find it hard to believe Apple has not responded with a fix. I may have to take it into a Genius Bar and see what they can do but I do not have high hopes.
You know, I was talking to someone last week and the name Apple came up. "Ah", he said, "the Evil Empire". Their success has made them much more brash than MS ever was. -
Last week I updated my iTunes, updated to iOS 5.0 and ever since I did this my phone has been going nuts. Any time I plug it into a charger I get a screen that tells me I need to connect to iTunes. I have had to restore it multiple times in order for it to work.
I've tried doing resets, restoring to factory-everything that I can find online to do. I've spoken with ATT tech support and done everything they've said to do regarding my greyed out wifi, my phone only working on 3G, and other issues.
The first iPhone 3GS I got had a defective camera, so ATT replaced it free of charge. I've had this one for a year, and quite frankly cannot afford a new one.
If anyone knows anything I can do to fix it, I would really appreciate it.11.1 is now the most recent iTunes. Downloading it may take a bit since everyone got hit today with the need to update their iTunes on the very same day the iOS update came out and you have to update iTunes to update the iOS.
YOu should still be able to charge it without updating iTunes. -
I really need to get this fixed
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Aperture Trial crashed and now my trial has expired
I have just received my new MacBook Pro and was excited to be able to try the Aperture Trial version. Installation went smoothly, and on first startup I let Aperture import my iPhoto library. However at about 10% of importing, Aperture seemed to have stalled. It did not respond to my input. Even trying to quit it from the dock had no effect. So I used Force Quit.
Now when I try to restart Aperture I get a message that my trial has expired, and I get the option to buy it. I would really be interesting in buying it after a 30-day trial, but not after a 10-minute trial which ended in a crash and a bug that now prevents me from starting up again!
Any similar experiences or possible solutions? Thanks! I tried your suggestion to delete everything Aperture related from the library, but with no luck. I also installed Aperture on my old 1.8 GHz iMac G5 yesterday, just as a test, and had no problems there (except that that machine is really too slow for Aperture). Then to my surprise, this morning the Aperture trial also worked again on my brand new MacBook Pro.
In hindsight, I think I must have installed the Aperture trial while my system clock was still on Shanghai time (where the MacBook Pro factory is). Yesterday (wednesday) afternoon in Europe, when I was installing, it must already have been thursday morning in China. Then during or after the installation I adjusted the time to Central European time, and the date skipped one day back. So the piece of software that was checking whether the trial was still valid actually noticed that the system date was before the date that the trial began and did not let me start the software again until today! Although I am not quite sure, that's my best theory about what must have happened.
As for the unresponsiveness that caused me to force quit Aperture in the first place, that might have been a mistake as well. In my eagerness to test the new computer I was doing many things at the same time. At the moment I have only 1 GB of RAM in this computer. I would suggest anyone trying out Aperture on a brand new machine to be patient. First make sure all other software and settings are in place, and then take a few hours to run Aperture alone, in order to let it import your images, etc. -
I was just watching / streaming TV off Safari on my actual TV.
I'm using a Mini-Display Port to HDMI cable for the connection to the external display.
Software update popped-up and said there was an update for Java and for SMC.
I ran the update and upon the computer restarting, my external display (my TV) is no longer working. It is now flickering.
It won't work in Mirroring or set up as an extended display.
I've reset SMC / PRAM / Safe Mode / Even restored from a Time Machine backup (From before the updates were done).
What could it be?!I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it. Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there. The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple. They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one. From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate. And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one. Try a new one. Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port. -
Softproof in Lightroom and Photoshop on external display not matching
Hi,
When I soft proof an image in Lightroom (5) and in Photoshop (CS6) on my external display there is a noticeable difference between the two proofs.
This is the case both with "simulate paper & ink" on and off (with matching settings in both applications) and with a variety of different profiles being used. On my laptop screen the proofs always match (between Photoshop and Lightroom).
On the external display with soft proofing off there is an exact match between images in LR and PS. With soft proofing on saturated areas of images (particularly reds, greens and yellows) become noticeably less saturated and blocked up in LR as compared to PS. Subdued colours appear to match. It's almost like they are both using the same profile but Lightroom is squashing it into a smaller gamut. I'm fairly sure PS is correct and LR is the one with something going wrong.
I'd like to sort it as I'd prefer to soft proof in Lightroom as that's where I print from. I've read up a lot on colour management and can't find a solution.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Tom
(I'm on a Macbook pro running 10.8.4 and the external display is an NEC Spectraview 271 (euro version of PA271W), the display is calibrated and profiled with Spectraview 5, with an i1 Display Pro. Working space in PS is Prophoto RGB and it's set to preserve embedded profiles. I've checked with various test images but mostly been using Bill Atkinon's printer test image. I set up the image in LR and PS to match on screen position and with the same colour (white) background, I can then flick back and forth and there should be no change but there is and it's very obvious.)I'm having trouble with Lightroom 5 soft proofing with reds too. To rid my propossed print of a gamut warning I must totally desaturate or change my paper profile to glossy (or both). This is odd because my monitor is calibrated, I'm using the correct paper profiles etc and when I ignore the gamut warning my prints are looking good. This isn't helpful to you but at least your not alone....

External display and macbook pro
Is it possible to connect 2 dvi external monitors to a new macbook pro? I am a photographer and want to use 2 displays when I use the macbook omn my desktop. michael
Apple did actually acknowledge this as a known issue with people running 10.5.2 with the graphics update, and are investigating it. There's some further discussion at this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1394449&tstart=0
Anyway, what worked for me was powering down, connecting my external display, keyboard, etc., powering up, and immediately closing the lid. It seems to behave better now, though I haven't rebooted since, although I have switched back and forth between running with the external display, and running without it, without any problems.
