New class object statically.

I have a class Test. This class has a static method which has as its purpose to create a new Test object. I currently have something like this:
public static Test getInstance() {
  return new Test();
}I was wondering if it is possible to write this code in such a way that no explicit reference to Test was made... and, as the always important follow up question, if it is possible, whether it is wise to do so?

I have an interface and several classes implementing
that interface. Each of these classes has a static
method that has a Hashtable as a parameter. When that
static method is called, the method creates an object
of the class it is in and then adds the object to the
Hashtable (the key for this entry is retrieved from
the class its from).
The 'problem' is that I have to write each of those
methods in each class myself, when all I really want
is to do the exact same thing over and over again
(with each of the classes), just with different class
objects.it's not "the same exact thing" over and over, though, is it? you're instantiating different classes in different methods. are you doing this to keep track of instances? you could have a factory that uses reflection to instantiate classes, and add them to the correct Map, but it can be awkward

  • Creating New Class Object progmatically

    Instead of uploading an XML for a new type definition, I want to create a new class object progmatically.
    In my code, I basically set up a ClassObjectDefinition, set the attributes, then call createSchemaObject.
    I'm getting an exception saying that I have an invalid or missing option.
    What is the bare minimum needed to create a new Class Object?
    null

    First - you must be admin mode to create any subclasses. Minimally, you need to set:
    - ClassName
    - SuperClass
    - your custom attributes
    If you have created your own java class which is optional, you will need to set:
    - BeanClassPath
    Then there's optional settings such as Description.
    If this doesn't help, is it possible to post your code setting the ClassObject Definition attribute Values (AVs) and the create?
    As a guide, you should set all the AVs that you used to create a subclass via XML.
    Another note - once you create subclass named FOO, you will not be able to create another subclass named FOO.
    Another note (!): by default, iFS will use your class name to create the DBMS table. If you have a particularly long class name which will exceed the DBMS limits for table names, then you will want to set:
    - DatabaseObjectName
    hope this helps.
    -S

  • How can i add custom attributes to a new Class Object using the API ?

    Hello everyone,
    Here is my problem. I just created a subclass of Document using the API (not XML), by creating a ClassObjectDefinition and a ClassObject. Here is the code :
    // doc is an instance of Document
    ClassObject co = doc.getClassObject();
    ClassObjectDefinition cod = new ClassObjectDefinition(ifsSession);
    cod.setSuperclass(co);
    cod.setSuperclassName(co.getName());
    cod.setName("MYDocument");
    ClassObject c = (ClassObject)ifsSession.createSchemaObject(cod);
    Everything seems to be OK since i can see the new class when i use ifsmgr. But my question is : how can i add custom attributes to this new class ? Here is what i tried :
    AttributeDefinition value = new AttributeDefinition(ifsSession);
    value.setAttribute("FOO", AttributeValue.newAttributeValue("bar"));
    c.addAttribute(value);
    But i got the following error message :
    oracle.ifs.common.IfsException: IFS-30002: Unable to create new LibraryObject
    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01400: impossible d'insirer NULL dans ("IFSSYS"."ODM_ATTRIBUTE"."DATATYPE")
    oracle.ifs.server.S_LibraryObjectData oracle.ifs.beans.LibrarySession.DMNewSchemaObject(oracle.ifs.server.S_LibraryObjectDefinition)
    oracle.ifs.beans.SchemaObject oracle.ifs.beans.LibrarySession.NewSchemaObject(oracle.ifs.beans.SchemaObjectDefinition)
    oracle.ifs.beans.SchemaObject oracle.ifs.beans.LibrarySession.createSchemaObject(oracle.ifs.beans.SchemaObjectDefinition)
    void fr.sword.ifs.GestionDocument.IFSDocument.createDocument(java.lang.String)
    void fr.sword.ifs.GestionDocument.IFSDocument.main(java.lang.String[])
    So, what am i doing wrong ?
    More generally, are we restricted in the types of the attributes ? (for example, would it be possible to add an attribute that would be an inputStream ? Or an object that i have already created ?).
    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Guillaume
    PS : i'm using Oracle iFS 1.1.9 on NT4 SP6 and Oracle 8.1.7

    Hi Guillaume,
    you're welcome. Don't know exactly, but assume that ATTRIBUTEDATATYPE_UNKNOWN
    is used to check for erronous cases only
    and it shouldn't be used otherwise.
    Creating your own objects could be simply done via
    ClassObject ifsClassObject;
    DocumentDefinition ifsDocDef = new DocumentDefinition(ifsSession);
    // get class object for my very own document
    ifsClassObject = ClassObject.getClassObjectFromLabel(ifsSession, "MYDOCUMENT");
    // set the class for the document i'd like to create
    ifsDocDef.setClassObject(ifsClassObject);
    // set attributes and content for the document...
    ifsDocDef.setAttribute("MYFOO_ATTRIBUTE",....);
    ifsDocDef.setContent("This is the content of my document");
    // create the document...
    PublicObject doc = ifsSession.createPublicObject(ifsDocDef);

  • How to tell if a Class object is instantiable at run time ?

    Hi
    Newbie here, I am making some modification to an existing code and need to tell if
    a Class object can be instantiated. My specific object is an abstract class.
    I found I can ask if a Class is an interface via
    Class class = ...;
    if (class.isInterface())
    but could not find anything for abstract classes. Any idea ? Thanks

    Modifier.isAbstract(clazz.getModifiers())Edited by: baftos on May 30, 2009 9:38 AMThis only covers the case of an abstract class. Below is a more robust solution. However even this solution has gaps - For instance, it is definitely possible to instantiate a URL object, but you've kind of got to know how to do it if you want to avoid a malformedURLException. If we are just talking about being able to instantiate the default constructor, this will suffice
    package tjacobs.test;
    import java.lang.reflect.Constructor;
    public class Test {
         public static class Bar {
              public static void install() {
              public Bar() {}
         public static abstract class Foo {
              public static void install() {
              public Foo() {}
         public static class FooBar {
              public static void install() {
              private FooBar() {}
         public static void abstractTest() {
    //          Foo.install();
    //          Bar.install();
    //          FooBar.install();
              abstractTest("tjacobs.test.Test");
              abstractTest("tjacobs.test.Test$Foo");
              abstractTest("tjacobs.test.Test$Bar");
              abstractTest("tjacobs.test.Test$FooBar");
         public static void abstractTest(String str) {
              Class c = null;
              try {
                   c = Class.forName(str);
              catch (Exception ex) {
                   ex.printStackTrace();
              try {

  • Static nonstatic class object constructor

    I was wonderring what is the use of non static constructors??
    we all know about static constructors, they are used for initializing the class.
    we all know about constructos, they are used for initializing an object from a given class.
    what I dont know is the use of non static constructors such as this
    class A{
         static{
              System.out.println ("Class A Static Constructor");
              /*What is the use of this???????
               *why dont we put this inside the constructor??
              System.out.println ("Class A NON static constructor");
         A(){
              System.out.println ("Class A Constructor");
    class B extends A{
         static{
              System.out.println ("Class B static constructor");
              System.out.println ("Class B NON static Constructor");
         B(){
              System.out.println ("Class B Constructor");
    public class Test{
         public static void main(String[]args){
              new B();
              new B();
    }I would appreciate understaind this!! I can only see that if there was no other constructor, it can be used instead of the default constructor() with no arguments,
    any clarification?

    They are called static and non static intializer.
    The non static initializer was introduced in the language subsequently with inner classes.
    It's used the give an anonymous inner class a feature that behaves like a constructor (though with no args).
    It's useless for other kinds of class.
    abstract class A{
         A(){
              System.out.println("A constructor");
         abstract void exec();
    class B{
         static A getA(){
              return new A(){
                             System.out.println("the cool implementation");
                        void exec(){
                             System.out.println("exec()");
         public static void main( String[] args){
              A a = B.getA();
              a.exec();
    }Cut and paste in a new text file, call it B.java, then javac B.java, and java B.

    Can't we convert from base class object to derived class.
    Can any one help me please...
    Thnaks in Advance

    When posting code, please use tags
    The object returned by File1.fun() is of type Base. You cannot cast an object to something it isn't - in this case, Base isn't Dervied. If you added some member variables to Derived, and the compiler allowed your cast from Base to Derived to succeed, where would these member variables come from?
    Also, you don't need the cast to myinterface in File1.fun()
    Also, normal Java coding conventions recommend naming classes and interfaces (in this case, myinterface) with leading capital letters, and camel-case caps throughout (e.g. MyInterface)

    class ObjectCLass
         Sub s=new Sub();
         public static void main(String[] args)

    so how can i typecast it
    i try with following methods , but i cant succeed
    1.(  *(a.getClass().getDeclaredField("s").get(a).getClass)*   a.getClass().getDeclaredField("s").get(a)   ).print() ;
    2.(  (Class.forName(Sub) ) a.getClass().getDeclaredField("s").get(a) ).print();Please any one one help me how to typecast it dynamically

    If you know you're going to invoke the "print" method on an object, then you also need to know the type of the class, or interface, which has that method.
    It seems what you are looking for is a tutorial on interfaces.
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/IandI/index.html
    In a nutshell, you can set up an interface which defines a "print" method, and create class(es) which implement that interface. Then as long as you have an object which implements that interface, but do not know the exact type of that object, you can simply cast it to the interface type and invoke the method.

  • Serialization custom Class Object

    Hi,
    I'm kind of stuck with a problem.
    I've been writing a servlet and applet that are communicating over
    internet using a socket connection and Object Serialization.
    The objects that are passed are custom:
    public class mcuComObj implements Serializable{
        static final long  serialVersionUID = 2222;
        private String name;
        private Vector attributes;
        ...There are some more functions but those are not of any interest.
    In the vector attributes, I've planted a jPanel (swing).
    The weird thing is that this morning, it worked a few times...after that
    I'm getting the:
    javax.swing.JComponent; local class incompatible: stream classdesc serialVersionUID = 6954663636822719621, local class serialVersionUID = 5896976265092562486 ERROR message.
    The send code:
    Vector v = new Vector();
    Object objButton = (Object) jButton1;
    v.add(objButton);
    obj.setAttributes(v);  //obj = mcuComObj
    con.sendObject(obj);   //con = socket connection threadThe receive code:
    Object input= (Object) objInpStr.readObject();When I serialize the mcuComObj class, does it also serialize the
    embedded objects (in this case that are in the Vector)?
    The main question is...how can I solve this? I can not guarantee that
    both Servlet and Applet have the same JDK running...!
    Have anyone of you got any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris van Diemen

    If the "magic numbers" (sent at the beginning of any writeObject() call) on the sending and receiving JDK differ, the object will not de-serialize properly on the receiving end.
    The easist solution would be to use a common format to transmit the data. Say! That sounds like XML.

  • Factory class and static members

    I don't understand very well why sometimes you can find a factory class (for example for the xml parsers). What's its aim?
    And why sometuimes, instead of a constructor, some classes have only static methods that returns a reference to that object?
    Anyone can tell me?
    Thanks

    Static memebers can be used in places where instances of its enclosing class is not neccesary.Only a method is required to be executed. Let me tell you with an example,
    class ConnectionPool {
    public static giveConnection(int index) {
    In the above example, our objective is to use only the method public static giveConnection(int index) {} , and not any of the other attributes of this class. You have 2 ways to use this method : One is, you can instantiate ConnectionPool p = new ConnectionPool(); . Second is , just use ConnectionPool.giveConnection(2);
    The first solution may create instance and obstruct your performance. Seond one does not do that. All invokers of this method do not instantiate and occupy space.
    Usually, factory classes have static members. Because these classes are used as a supporting processing factory. Theses members can be considered as utility methods. Hence static property will better suit for them. This answer will also tell you that the use of constructors here is not neccessary.
    Hope this has helped you.

  • Your Opinions: Inner Classes Need static Members

    Hi All,
    I want to solicit opinions for a minor change to the way inner classes work. I submitted this as an RFE to Sun and they rejected it, really without giving a reason. I'd like to know your opinions. If there is strong support I will repost the RFE.
    As you probably know, inner classes cannot have static members. The following generates a compiler error:import java.util.*;
    public class MyClass {
       class MyInnerClass {
          // Next line causes compiler error...
          static Map m = new HashMap();
    }In order to get around this you have to make the Map variable a static member of the containing class:import java.util.*;
    public class MyClass {
       static Map m = new HashMap(); // so much for encapsulation...
       class MyInnerClass {
    }I am suggesting that inner class be allowed to contain static members. Here's my reasoning...please comment:
    There are times when members (i.e., fields and methods) rightfully belong to the class as a whole, not to any particular instance of a class. I'm sure we've all found times when it was necessary to have static members in our classes. The same issues that necessitated using static members in top-level classes make them desirable for inner classes as well.
    Designing a class as an inner class is a step toward encapsulation. By forcing static members that logically belong in an inner class to be declared in the containing class is to crack the encapsulation, IMHO.
    Even though a containing class has access to all of an inner class' members (including private members) and vice versa, I think the notion of inner static members still is more OO-ish.
    What are your opinions? Would allowing inner classes to contain static members make Java more object oriented? I think it would.
    Technically, I don't think there's any reason this cannot work since the JVM has no notion of inner classes, per se.
    What do you think?

    an inner class is effectively a non static instance
    variable of its enclosing class. Instance member, but not a variable. it's a class, a type, not a variable.
    >
    I think the problem here is that making a field static
    means more than just that that field and its value are
    common to every instance of the class. It means that
    the value is valid without an instantiation of that
    class.
    Since the class itself must be instantiated (it is
    not static), What do you mean, excatly, by "_must_ be instantiated"? You are not ever "required" to instantiate anything unless you want to use it.
    you can't have static member data inside it. I don't see how this follows from the previous part of the statement.
    How would you reference the static member data of
    the inner class? You would have to specify an
    instance of the inner class, and since this breaks
    the meaning of static, you can't have static members
    in an inner class.How about outerObj.InnerClass.staticMember The syntax is well defined. The question at hand is, do we really want to allow this? The syntax to do this should only be an issue after that question has been answered in the affirmative. The people at Sun have decided not to allow it, so for now, syntax is a non-issue.
    >
    if you wanted a static member in an inner class you
    could put it in a super class of the inner class...Or in the enclosing class, as suggested in the orginal post.

  • Basic actionscript help, tracing properties of my class object

    Hi all,I'm just starting to learn about classes in actionscript, I am following along with Moocks book Actionscript for Flash MX and are trying to execute a trace on the properties of my ballclass but all I get is undefined. He is what I have in my actions panel.
    function Ball () {
        this.radius = 10;
        this.color = 0xFF0000;
        this.xPosition = 59;
        this.yPosition = 15;
    var boucyBall = new Ball();
    trace (bouncyBall.radius);
    trace (bouncyBall.color);
    trace (bouncyBall.xPosition);
    trace (bouncyBall.yPosition);
    Any help would be great

    Since you are learning about classes, you might want to use one to help you:
    class Util{
    public function Util(){
    // empty constructor because you don't need one for this kind of class
    public static function traceProps(obj:Object,label:String):Void{
    if(label != undefined){
    trace(Properties for "+label+":");
    for(var a in obj){
    trace("   "+a+": "+obj[a]);
    trace(newline);
    Then place that class file somewhere in your class path so it will always be available to you. And then you can always add these lines.
    import com.complexity.Utils;
    If the file is in your class path you don't really need the above line, but it will help you remember that you are using it. Also I'm just making up what your class path might be based upon your screen name. You would need to use whatever actual path you had. And then...
    Utils.traceProps(bouncyBall,"trouble maker here");
    Of course don't use it with an 10,000 element array, unless you really like to suffer.....
    or just
    Utils.traceProps(bouncyBall);

  • About Class Object  as Array

    Hello.. I'm beginner in Java Programming
    Now i learn about Array.. i'm not understand about use class object become array. for example i'm create class object Card.
    Then i call Card object to CardTest as main object and Card object called as array.
    can you tell me about how to work Card object as array in CardTest ?

    so i guess Object Class can be array :).I don't get that statement. You can store objects in an array, if that's what you mean. An array itself is also an object.
    but i'm not understrand if static method in Card object can be called automatically when Card initialized in CardTest?a) research constructors
    b) you usually don't need static methods, its just something that people new to the language tend to overuse because then you don't have to create object instances. Forget about static methods, try to make it work using regular non-static methods.
    And you really should read and study more, you're coming to the forum way too soon. First get a solid knowledge base, the only thing you're doing now is asking questions that you could have answered for yourself by studying more.

  • Arrays of arbitrary dimensions / Class object for primitive types

    Here's an interesting problem: is there any way to code for the creation of an n-dimensional array where n is only known at runtime (input by user, etc.)?
    java.lang.reflect.Array has a newInstance method which returns an array of an arbitrary number of dimensions specified by the int[] argument, which would give me what I want. However, the other argument is a Class object representing the component type of the array. If you want to use this method to get an array of a primitive type, is it possible to get a Class object representing a primitive type?
