New computer + manual transfer of files = permissions mess!

Hello everyone,
Bear with me, my situation is lengthy to explain, possibly because I don't have the right words to describe it.
I've got a difficult situation I can't figure out. Let me start by saying, I don't know the Terminal very well, as I suspect that fixing my problem will definitely involve the Terminal. I know just enough to be dangerous (or to copy and paste!)
I had an old laptop running 10.6, and have a new laptop now running 10.8.4. Rather than use the Migration Assistant, I felt I wanted a clean start, a new user profile, etc, so I started from scratch. I should add that the new laptop has two internal drives, one that houses the OS, the other that is meant to store my (user generated) files. Also, for abbreviations' sake-- old computer, my username was called OldUser, and new computer my username is now NewUser.
I moved thousands of files on to my new computer's file storage volume (called "Data"), only to discover that any file I open, when I try to save, says this:
The document “example.rtf” could not be saved. The file is locked. Do you want to save your changes to it anyway? [Save Anyway] [Cancel]
There's also an accompanying tool tip that shows up next to the file's name (at the top of the open document) that says:
The document could not be autosaved. You don't have permission.
It doesn't matter what kind of document I open up, they all say this same thing.
All these troubled files reside here: /Volumes/Data/Old laptop files/Desktop. Files that are NOT in this directory, but are elsewher in the same volume "Data" behave just fine, (and no, just by adding a new file into the Old Laptop Files/Desktop directory doesn't "corrupt" it at this point.)
I have looked at the permissions of some of these troubled files, (File > Get Info) and discovered something I hadn't seen before. It looks like this:
everyone: Custom
NewUser: Read & Write
admin: Read & Write
everyone: Read & Write
The reason I say "I'd never seen it before" is because instead of the usual three categories, Owner/group/other, there's that fourth one at the top that says "custom."
The rest of the permissions, I set to "Read/Write" by recursively using the chmod command to set the file permissions to 777. (This is one command line trick I do know). But it didn't work!
At this point, I'm really stuck, because I lack the file permissions/command line vocabularly to even be able to google my question! Help?!
Thanks in advance for any tips/help!

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

My 3GS is dying and it's synced to an older computer. I have tons of datafiles as well as apps, music, text messages, etc. that I need to get moved to the new iphone4 I'm getting. Then I need to move the sync to a newer computer so that I can sync the new phone and new computer.
I understand how to get my apps to transfer to a new pc. That's not the issue. It's getting ALL the data from the 3GS to the 4 and then to a new computer.
    Thanks.

Thanks much, that's very helpful for step one (getting old phone onto new phone). Very clear.
However, I still have the problem of moving to the new computer. How do I move the sync to the new computer after the new phone is set up?

It doesn't quite work that way. Transfer your music from the old computer to the new one. Then, sync the iPod.

  • How do you install CS5 onto a new computer without Time Machine/file transfer

I'm not getting a new computer, but my current one is getting a little old (Macbook Pro V. 10.6.8) and I'm afraid it might crash if I download the newest Maverick system, which is why I want to make absolutely sure I'm able to save and transfer all my old files and CS5 Creative Suite programs if this indeed happens. I don't trust Time Machine to do it; my boss had this happen and Time Machine did not transfer the Adobe programs. I also don't want to rely on Time Machine and any other file transfer (which all new Macs offer) because I've had brand new computers crash because of old corrupt files from my old computer converting over, and the Apple people said it's a bad idea (which would have been nice to know BEFORE the computer crashed and everything. . .) I've been told you can only use the CD to install CS5 onto your computer twice, which I've already done (thanks to my brand new computer crashing once already). So I would like to know how it's possible to install the program onto a new computer should this one crash, without the use of file transfer or Time Machine. I have no interest in upgrading to CC.
    Thanks!

Avoid using Time Machine for re-installing Adobe software. It rarely works and usually breaks the activation mechanism.
I've been told you can only use the CD to install CS5 onto your computer twice,
    Not quite.
You can install the software as many times as you like but you can only activate the software for use on a maximum of two computers at the same time.
To re-install you will need your CS5 serial number.
Download the installer from Download CS5 products
Install then enter your serial number when prompted.

  • Is it possible to Sync to a new computer when Windows Easy File Transfer won't work - followup

This is to answer cor-el who emailed me and gave me links to transfer the bookmark files from the old computer (XP) to the new computer (Win 8).
The problem is that I can't even get to "trouble shooting" in the Firefox menu. There is some file corrupt before I'm even able to get that far.
We found his old bookmark files on the hard drive, but eventually, on the old computer, the correct bookmarks loaded in Firefox only way deep in the bookmark menu so I had to drag them onto the toolbar individually and finally the new computer synced up with the correct bookmarks.
I would love to find the files for the bookmarks but I've looked and only found the old bookmark files (even looked where it said to look in "help"). In any case, please don't send me another link unless it solves my problem; I've worked on computers since 1984 and I know when the computer freezes up (and it does when I go to "help" and then "trouble shooting"—when I click "trouble shooting" is when everything stops.

    Hello,
Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.
#Use one of these methods to open the Bookmarks Library window:
#* Firefox 29 and above: Click the Bookmarks button and select Show All Bookmarks.
#* Previous Firefox versions: Click the Firefox button and click on Bookmarks. (If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Bookmarks button or Bookmarks menu item and select Show All Bookmarks.)
    # At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
    # Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
    # In the new window that appears, click OK.
    # Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.
For more information, see the Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer article. For other solutions, see the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.

  • Trying to put my old i tunes library on new computer - says cannot locate files

    Hi
I have just installed i tunes onto my new computer, I followed the steps on line to transfer my old i tunes library onto my new computer (it was backed up on external hard drive). Now all the songs are showing, but when I click on them it brings up an exclamation mark and says it cannot locate the file.
Can someone please help me - I am a complete novice when it comes to technology.
    Many Thanks

    Hi
I have managed to find a previous library on another external hard drive and managed to add folders to i tunes. It hasn't put all of the songs I had on previously on there, but it is all of the ones that I no longer have the cds for now. All of the other songs I have got cd's for so can just redo them.
I am assuming now that all the songs are back in i tunes this will be my most up to date i tunes library now. Once I have got my additional songs on would you recommend backing up the new library to an external drive again.
Thanks for your help, I have never had this problem before, it seems that whenever there is a new version of i tunes more problems arise!

  • Moved iPod to new computer and now it is all messed up

Help! I just got a new computer and I tried to move my ipod to the new computer. I backed up my library to CDROM, then deauthorized the old computer and authorized the new computer. I loaded iTunes on the new machine and restored my library. Everything looked fine until I tried to put new songs on the ipod from a CD. The new songs showd up in the itunes library and they show up up as being on the ipod on the PC screen, but when the ipod was disconnected, they could not be accessed from the ipod. I tried all of the R's but it not only didn't solve the problem, but now nothing is on the ipod at all. When I connect the ipod, i get the setup assistant box and when I put the Ipod name and click ok, it says that it synced and itunes goes back to saying eveything is still there, even though it is not. Any suggestions?

using migration assistant (or any other shortcut to properly installing adobe programs) is problematic.
at this point, uninstall using the adobe uninstallers, if possible.
clean (Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6)
then properly install using the adobe installation files.

I transferred my music library with my mini to a new computer but now the new computer says it cannot find my any of my songs because "the original file cannot be found". And yet it looks like it transferred, the new library has all 609 songs. Any thoughts on how to get this opened up.

  • New computer - software transfer

I have a wonderful, new, faster computer operating on Windows 2007. How do I transfer my Adobe XP and CS3 to my new computer?

Deactivate it from your old computer and then reinstall it on the new one and activate it. Use the CD that the software came on or the backup CD you made when you downloaded (didn't backup, you may be in a lot of trouble in that case).

Just connect the drive, run Disk Utility, select the drive, and partition/erase it as required.
By the way, this forum is intended for questions about old, pre-G3 hardware, and doesn't get much traffic.
