New computer purchase hinges on use of XP on Mac

I'm in the market for a new laptop, preferably a Mac that will run XP (and potentially Vista in the near future?).
My specific need is to be able to occassionally run Windows XP, make a wireless Internet connection (WEP password entry may be required), and then run a CISCO VPN software connection to my network at work, and finally connect to my office PC using Windows Remote Desktop connection. Will this all work using Boot camp and/or Parallels?
I've seen some postings here that indicated that Function keys were not working under some method? I would need Function keys as part of my Remote Desktop session, as I use a mainframe emulator (Rumba) that requires them.
It would be great to be able to use only one laptop, but I'm reluctant to buy the Mac and go through all the setup only to find out I need a PC laptop for office connection as well!
Words of advice (or comfort) appreciated.
Thanks!
G5 Dual 180   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

I finally was able to get a copy of the OS X version of the Cisco VPN software, and once installed, I was able to use Mac version of RDC successfully on our G5 machine!
I've now ordered my new Mac Pro 15" with confidence that it will easily handle my needs. Thanks for the help!

  • Same ipod new computer, purchased musin

I reset-up my ipod on my new laptop, no problem. I went in to buy more music from itunes and when I go to sync up the songs to my ipod, I get an error message that says I don't have access to download these songs.
I am unclear I just purchased them from my new laptop. Not sure what I am missing. Any help is much appreciated!

did you authorize your new computer in the music store?
To authorize a computer to play songs purchased using your Apple Account
Select a song you've purchased (in your library or the Purchased Music playlist).
    Click the Play button.
If the computer is already authorized, the song plays. If the computer has not yet been authorized, iTunes asks you to enter the Apple ID and password you used to purchase the song.

  • Help me decide on new computer purchase

My main goal is to keep using Aperture for as long as possible or until I know more about Apple Photos. I'm still running 10.6.8 so that means I'm stuck with Aperture 3.2.4. I'd like the most current version of Aperture so of course that means a new os.
Should I update to Mavericks on my current computer? Or is there a technical reason I should get a new iMac?  What do you think?

    Mavericks is no longer available.
However, the current version of Yosemite runs an updated version of Aperture ( version 3.6)
Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
To install OS X  10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (free upgrade, but currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite (currently available free upgrade) you need one of these Macs:
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion purchased emailed download code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
    Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe  could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty  here.
    http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.

  • Computer crashed, ipod synced to new computer, purchased songs are gone.

My computer crashed. I used EphPod to download my ipod mini onto the new computer. It looked like all the songs were transfered so when I went to resync it in Itunes, I clicked "erase and resync". Then a window popped up saying that some songs wouldn't be transfered because the computer was authorized to play them. I clicked resync anyway since I have no way to deauthorize the computer that crashed. I thought EphPod had downloaded the purchased songs. It didn't. Is there any way I can retreve my purchased songs? Are they stored in my Itunes account or something?
    Thank you for your help.

The policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service

  • How do I move my iPhone back ups to a new computer which is already using iTunes for a different device?

I have backed up my children's iDevices to my work computer. Now that my wife has a new computer, she wants to be able to manage their devices from home. Of course, she is already using her computer to manage her iPhone.
Is there a way to move my iTunes library files to my wife's computer so that it will recognize both her iPhone as well as our children's iDevides, without losing any data, playlists, etc.?
    TIA

No. You cannot join the two libraries. She can make a copy of your iTunes library on her computer, then switch libraries when opening iTunes if she needs to handle the other devices. Note that everything you have downloaded for your kids on your computer are connected to your Apple ID. Your wife cannot transfer anything to her Apple ID.
Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.
Note: The essence of the above was created by user, randers4. I
have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.

  • New Computer purchase 27" ACD & Mac pro or 27" imac

Hi I plan on buying a new Apple Computer very soon, I'm going to go with either a Mac Pro and a 27" ACD or a 27" iMac. Do the new 27" iMac's have better specs then the Mac Pro's? I do like to have plenty of storage in my computer but I would sacrifice space for better specs if the iMac is better. If I got an iMac then I would customize it with a solid state drive and a 2 TB Drive, 16 gb of memory. I plan on installing WIndows 7 ultimate 64 bit on the mac. Which computer would be better for Windows 7. I also plan on hooking up my Mac to my 50" Panasonic VT25 Plasma TV as either an extended or duplicated display.

The newest IMacs do not allow you to use any but Apple drives. They customized the iMac drives to add a temperature sensor, and if you install a non-Apple drive, the case fans roar at full speed.
Mac Pro (tower) is a lot more flexible anyway.

  • With a new computer, how can I use the apps/etc. on it as a 'seed' on the new computer?

I had to buy a new computer so I used the Migration Assistant to get the data from my old computer HD to the new machine. For some reason it didn't copy my iTunes data. The old HD is in an enclosure because the old machine took a lightning hit and it wasn't worth putting the money into a 7 year old machine. The HD survived.
How can I 'start from scratch' with the new machine and copy the apps/data from my iPhone and iPad to the new computer?

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

  • I have a new computer and want to use it for my IPhone - it wont just plug

I have upgraded to a newer PC What do I need to do to use my I phone with it. I thought I could just plug & play when I accessed my apple account on line!  Help

Perhaps you could explain what the issue is?
You sync it the same way you did with your old computer.
When you sync to a different computer, it will first erase the content from the iphone and replace with content from the new computer, so make sure to copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of the old computer to the new one first.

  • How do I get iTunes on a new computer to recognize and use my files on the local drive?  My music files on iCloud have been recognized.

My old computer failed.  All files, including iTunes were backed up on a separate drive.  All files have been loaded on the new computer.  iTunes was reloaded, and recognizes all files on iCloud, but does not link to the files on the computer.  How can I re-establish that linkage?

    Hello jzinser,
I am not sure on how you reset up your iTunes library on your new computer. If you copied the music by dragging on top of iTunes, then the media would have been put into the proper location. If you have the media copied to your computer and have not established in iTunes where it sits, then you will need to do that within the preferences in iTunes. Take a look at the articles below for more information to help sort this out.

  • Can i take a a hard drive from a windows computer, enclosure it and use it on my mac as a dual boot?

I would like to take a hard drive from my old Windows computer which already has Windows 7 installed an use it on my mac as a dual boot. How would i go around doing this so i could keep all the files i already within this hard drive? I have the hard in an enclosure so i just need to know how i could use on my iMac, If anyone could take the time to get back to this i would appreciate it, Thanks!

Windows won't boot from an external drive. Don't waste your time.

  • New Computer, purchased lightroom 5, did on install, tried to use, asks for enter the serial #, when entered get  a red X and only option is to cancel.  Have SD 's want to load into program, but cannot

new Dell computer, after setting up, loaded a purchased Adobe Photoshop Lightroom  5 program,  activated and loaded from online, wrote down the S/N, when truing to open and use on the computer, it asks for wanting to license it , asks for the S/N., when entered does not proceed, only get a red X , with the only option is cancel. Have photo's I want to load but cannot.

Yes, that is correct. It’s almost like I have the # but it’s not active. When I go to my account to it look up, I do not see it listed. I did get a verification e-mail that I responded to, so I think it should be listed in my Adobe account  I did not realize the box also had a disc also. I would like to try that but not sure if that would be a problem, since Lightshop appears on my Apps menu.  Would I have to delete the program and start over ?

  • Pending New Computer Purchase

Hello,   I presently have a Toshiba, SatelliteL505-S6946. It has been having problems for which I've been working with techs in the Toshiba Forums. Rather than spending money to fix it - if it is fixable - I've decided to purchase a new laptop.
    1.  I have gone to the Toshiba website and found I can order a custom built one. (Hopefully that would avoid having a lot of programs, etc loaded that I don't need).
MY QUESTION IS - If I send you a list of type of work/activities that I use the computer for, could you give me the range of the specs that I should have included in the hardware if I have one built?  For example, how much GB should I get for memory and storage?
I'm looking at the Satellite C850-BT2N12 Laptop as it has Windows 7 Home Premium 64 -bit.  I prefer to stay away from Windows 8. I don't know if the specs of the C850 will meet my needs, so I'd appreciate it if someone could help me with that determination. Thank you.   Judy

  • Apple Stockholder discount for new computer purchase

I want to purchase a new iMac to replace an old G5.
I am a stockholder and wonder if Apple offers any discount to stockholders when ordering a new Apple computer?

You're actually mistaken.  IBM's PC division was profitable at the time it was sold to Lenovo.
Additionally IBM retained it's Intel based server division as they refocused on commerical services.
It's nice that IBM chooses to continue to offer discounts on Lenovo based PC's to it's stockholders.
