New Folder added called private post SL install

Hello.
I performed an upgrade install to SL from 10.5.8. Since then everything working fine, but I noticed when I open my HD in finder I now have a folder called Private that's over 4 gigs. Wasn't there before upgrade (double checked this using Time Machine back up I made before upgrade). When I try to remove the folder get dialogue to enter my password. Not sure if anyone else has had this happen and/or has a solution? I've tried to remove it, but then system will not boot.

Jesse
Found the solution after a bit of hunting around. First you need to enable the root user. If you're comfortable with Terminal follow this:
"sudo passwd root"
Type in current password and Terminal will then prompt for the new root password and for you to confirm it.
Failing that you can access the Directory Utility in /System/Library/CoreServices
From menu: Edit>Enable Root User
Follow the same process of setting the password (make sure it's not "root")
Then open Terminal and type in:
"chflags hidden /private"
where /private is the location and name of the folder. Check the folder is now hidden and then disable root user if you want to in Directory Utility.
Worked for me and it took 1% of the time to actually do it than it did to find the solution!

  • Installed a new update of iTunes and it created a new folder

    Hi,
I lost a hard drive last month and had to purchase a new one.  I copied my actual music files to a similar directory format that they were in before (\Music\iTunesMusic\ and under that, the artists and the songs.
I then installed the most recent version of iTunes and it asked where my music was and I told it.  It then created a new directory called \Music\iTunes\iTunesMedia\Music where all new downloads now appear.  I now have music in two locations (just a few in the new folder, but all of my apps were moved there from my iPod touch and all of my old music in the old folder) and two libraries in two locations (the old one in \Music and the new one in \Music\iTunes and I would like my music to be in one location and managed by one library and I'll delete the library that isn't being used (I don't really care which location).  My question is:  If I just copy the large folder of music to the newly created location, how do I get it recognized in iTunes and then which library is the correct one so I can delete the other?  Is there a better way to manage this so all files are under one location?
Also, I was using Home Sharing on the computer in the other room.  How do I change that computer to point to the new location?
    Thanks in advance,
    Gwen

Oh ok...try using a third party program such as YamiPod or CopyPod, both free and will let you rip your iPod onto your iTunes.
Or do it this way: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Sorry, I am getting tired and easily confused. Time to call it a night.
    Good Luck,

  • I need to keep certain emails private for only my viewing (kids). I have a folder called Private. Can I require a pw to open it?

Certain emails are for my eyes only. I put them in a local folder called "private." How can I prevent other users from opening that folder either accidentally or on purpose.

I think a much better approach would be to password protect your User account in the Operating System, and set up another account or accounts for the children. You limit their rights to stop them installing ad-hoc and wrecking the computer. You set up a screensaver with password to lock your account when not at the computer.
This add-on: https://nic-nac-project.org/~kaosmos/profilepassword-en.html lets you password protect your Thunderbird profile, though it is a weak form of protection. OK for very young children, but older kids will likely see it as a challenge to hack it.
    See these:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Protecting_the_contents_of_the_profile_-_mail
And note "Note: You can password protect the contents of the message pane by setting mail.password_protect_local_cache to true using the configuration editor in conjunction with setting a master password in Thunderbird." listed under "medium methods".
…but I'm not sure how you'd lock the pane once you'd unlocked it. You'd probably have to close Thunderbird, so it challenges the user when next run.
As mentioned in the article and the webpage for the add-on, none of these measures guard against your email being stored in plain text and thus visible to anyone browsing the file system. Therefore your best option is to use User Accounts, with logins and passwords, and control access to your own data that way. A user would need admin ("root") privileges to access your data, or be sufficiently knowledgeable to be able to boot with a linux CD or similar.
Storing your email data on a USB stick that you can take away with you.
All of the above require some diligence and vigilance on your part, as you must remeber to lock or close Thunderbird, or logout, or remove the USB device before you leave the computer. A password-protected screen saver and separate User Accounts in the OS provide the closest to an automated protection system.

  • I created a News folder but cannot add The Washington Post--I can add other Web sites

I created a "News" folder. I cannot add "The Washington Post" to the folder. I have no trouble adding other Web pages to the folder.

This can be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • I want to create a new folder on my external hard drive for photos.  Even though I added the new folder button to the tool bar it is not highlighted so I cannot click on it to create a new folder on this drive.

I have an external hard drive that I would like to pre-make a new folder before I import photos into it.  Even though I added the new folder app to by toolbar, it is not highlighted and I cannot use it.  It will only let me create new folders if I upload to iPhoto.  That is not where I want to store everything.  So I need to figure out how to turn on or activate New Folder on my toolbar for all possible downloading options.

If it's a drive that you've previously used with a PC, just double-check the format - click the drive once on the desktop to highlight it, and click cmd-i (the command key and the i key together) to see the Info window. That will tell you, under Format, how it's formatted.
If it's "NTFS", that's the current Windows format. You can read but not write to it with a Mac. If you want full read/write access, you should look into Paragon NTFS, which allows you to do both. Note that some features of te Mac (Time Machine, for example) will only work with Mac-formatted drives.

    Hello dancetoday07,
Let's see if we can square this away for you. With backing up your iPhone, it will back everything you have using iTunes and if you use iCloud, by default, backs up everything. After you have made a backup you can restore that to put the contents of the backup on your replacement iPhone. If you want to put certain things back on, you will at least need to export the content to your computer, like your photos and videos. If you only want to put certain things back on, then you will need to sync that over with iTunes. All the information you will need are in the articles below.

  • Permissions in a folder are not applied to new files added by users over shared network

New files added to a shared folder do not inherit the permissions of the folder but rather retain the permissions of the user. Because the purpose of the folder on the network is to allow multiple users access to all the files (read and write), these new files cannot be accessed and editd by others. Is there a way to have the new files automatically inherit the folder permissons? I am aware of the "Apply to enclosed items " drop-down in the Get Info window but this is not practical given the number of new files that are produced and filed.
    THanks,
    JD

If it's the folder is on the boot drive then the only way to accomplish this is with a combination of groups and ACL's as far as I know. There may be other ways but this is the one I know.
You say the folder is on the network but is on the boot disk, how are you setting this up and are the users accessing this all from Mac's? And they all have accounts on this Mac?
In a nutshell you would setup a group that all the users needing to access the folder belong to and then setup the ACL on the fodder so that all member's of that group will have full permission to whatever is in the folder.
So first in Users&Groups create a group for this and add all the users who need access.
The do to the folder and change its group to the group you created and change its mode to 775 (or 770 if you don't want anyone else having even read access on the folder)
    Then enter this
    sudo chmod -R +a "GroupNameCreated  allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
    add_subdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directory_inherit"  folderToChange
Now the weird thing is if you look at files in the folder they will appear to have the normal Unix mode of 644 but anyone in the group will have read, write and delete permission on the items in the folder.
I suggest you play with this on a test folder and seeing if it meets your needs before changing the working folder.
Also this will not change anything already in the folder it only applies to newly created files/folders
    regards

  • Can new folder be added into a war using jar commands?

    Hi All,
I am working on an installer creation attempt to make some changes on a war at the client side to inject my changes into it. As a result i am in need to modify the war using jar commands and have found some success.
    I user the following command.
D:\MyWarLab>jar uf webtop.war customThis command helped me in adding my changes inside a folder named 'custom' placed at location 'D:\MyWarLab' into the 'custom' folder inside my 'webtop.war'.
Now this worked as expected since the 'custom' folder was already present inside the war.
Now my next step is to inject a new folder named 'customA' inside
webtop.war ->WEB-INF -> classes -> com -> application. This customA folder would contain the java class files i have created. The customA folder does not already exist at the above mentioned location, hence the need to create it.
I have not been able to find a jar command to add new folders at desired locations of the war.
Could you please validate my attempt and suggest a command to fulfil my requirement.

Now this worked as expected since the 'custom' folder was already present inside the war.No. It worked because 'custom' existed in the file system as a directory with files under it. Whether it was already in the war is irrelevant.
This customA folder would contain the java class files i have created. The customA folder does not already exist at the above mentioned location, hence the need to create it.If it exists on the disk you can add it to the war with the jar uf command.
I have not been able to find a jar command to add new folders at desired locations of the war. You've already found it!

  • Lion Mail creates a new folder in Yahoo Mail called "Sent Messages"

For some reason, since updating to 10.7.5, Mail no longer puts sent messages into the proper "Sent" folder of my Yahoo accounts. It creates a new folder in Yahoo Mail called "Sent Messages" and stores them there. This new folder is only visible from iOS devices' Mail or by logging into Yahoo through a web browser. Lion Mail doesn't sync this new folder, for whatever reason.
Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this or has found a fix.

Okay, thanks to nobody for their help.  But I figured it out anyway.  Somehow there was a rule which had the "if-then" result of "move to (my wife's name) mailbox" -- so when such an email arrived, Mail would have to create the (previously-deleted) mailbox in order to follow the rule.  So I just deleted that rule.

I just installed the new CC apps. Since they get installed parallel to the old ones instead of upgrading, do I un-install the old ones with the un-install app in the old folder?

    Easyebe,
Are you using a Mac machine or Windows PC?
If using a Mac machine, go to Application-->Utilities-->Adobe Installer-->old apps names and run the uninstaller for old apps.
If you are using Windows PC, go to Control panel-->>Program and Features and uninstall the old apps.
It will uninstall everything related to old apps, but your setting must be imporated to new version of apps.

  • Files removed from folders, added into a "new folder with items"

Just found files missing from document folders in multiple places, all appear to have been moved to a single folder called "new folder with items" under my user folder. Folder structure all in tact - just files all (or rather nearly all) moved.
I'm restoring from back up now but ***?! had this mac for a year with no issues until now. No major tinkering done on the mac to have caused such a dramatic issue.

If the directory name were random (most likely not even readable), that would mean the file system is corrupted and in need to be repaired ASAP, but as the name is in plain english it seems it was assigned programmatically.
As most Unix derivatives, Mac OS X has a program called fsck.
Each time a disk is "mounted" fsck checks if the file system is in a consistent state. If "dangling" files are found, they are collected in a special directory called "lost+found".
Apple could have changed fsck to create a directory "new folder with items" instead of "lost+found", but I think this is unlikely.
Perhaps someone more familiar with fsck could confirm, but in the meantime I would not rule out other theories.
    P.S.
The files could still have been selected from the "All my files" category on the sidebar which looks like "flat" directory as far as the finder is concerned.

  • How can I make itunes detect new music added to Music folder

How can I setup itunes to automatically detect new music added to my music folder? Under the advanced setting I currently have Itunes set to view my music folder where all my music is located. Im using Windows 7, Itunes Version 10.4.1.10. Currently I have to add new music manually and that's *****. I have over 2000 cd's that I need to rip. Please help. Thanks

If you are ripping CDs, you can rip with iTunes and the tracks will be added to your iTunes library without manual intervention.
But if you already have the files, or are using something other than iTunes to rip, you will note that iTunes does not automatically detect when new files have been placed in a folder.  You can add this capability by using a 3rd party program such as iTunes Folder Watch.
