New iMac cannot hold a FW 800 connection

Hello all, I have this brand new iMac for my music studio. This machine cannot hold a FW connection for more than a few minutes without losing it. Because there is only one FW 800 port (boo!! I cannot grasp this move by Apple to kill off it's association with pro audio apps and studios that have so much invested in FW 400..anyway...), grr..because of the one 800 port, my signal chain is first to the Apogee Ensemble via a 800 to 400 converter cable, and then to two outboard PPA Oxford 911+ chipset 500GB drives. When the FW connection fails, the only option is to shutdown the whole shebang, drag the hard disk icons to the trash which BTW, is not reliable on this machine for some reason, shut down the Ensemble and restart it, remount the drives, etc.
C'mon! Apple! Are you listening? Why can't you make a computer that can be used in a recording environment without one stupid FW buss problem after another? It was like this with the Lucent chips, now it's another problem! Do you have no interest in pro audio anymore?
I have been browsing this board. My other posts are on the Logic Express board, which is full of posts by me and others wondering about the FW problems. This is a new machine, same FW buss problems, may or may not be chip related. Very frustrating. Cannot refresh connections without restarting. If anybody's got any insight on this, I'm all ears.

These are the formal procedures for PRAM reset and SMC reset, so be sure to do them precisely.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
You seem to have a lot or peripheral devices. When you reconnect from doing the SMC reset, if you are using a power strip that is old or crowded with other devices, for this test, you should plug in the iMac directly to a wall power outlet. If your FireWire devices are on one power strip, you should also spread them out to more than one wall outlet.
Connect one FireWire device at a time. See if this problem exists if only one device is connect; use one at a time to check if the FireWire connection remains stable.
If each device checks out by itself, connect that "Apogee Ensemble" first, and daisy-chain one of the two FireWire drives to see if it remains stable. If so, remove that device and try the other FireWire drive.
Finally, if all is well with two devices connected, try them all connected at the same time.
Note: If one or both of those FireWire drives is being used for a function that does not require the faster FireWire speed, and the drive also has a USB 2.0 interface, you should connect it via USB 2.0. For example, a Time Machine backup drive does not require ultra fast data access. USB 2.0 is more than fast enough. So take some load off the FireWire port and use USB 2.0 when possible.

  • New iMac Cant Hold Internet Connection (and finds a lot of networks....)

    Hello,
I have one of the new 20" iMacs released 8/7. My problem is that my iMac cant hold an internet connection and it finds a lot of possible networks to which it can connect.
I am certain the issue lies with the iMac because my old Powerbook G4 has no problems connecting to the internet and it is sitting literally next to the iMac. Furthermore, I actually had purchased an iMac about a week ago and that one had no problems connecting to the internet either. (I returned that one when the new iMacs were released.) So that means 2 Macs had no problems connecting to the internet from the same location yet this new iMac does.
One thing I have noticed about this new iMac is that it detects many more networks than my Powerbook or the iMac from last week. I live in Manhattan so there are networks everywhere. Sometimes the iMac will give me 15 or so different networks to connect to and seconds later the choices drop to 5 or so. When I try to connect to the network I want (my network) the connection doesnt hold and it frequently drops. It takes me forever to download anything. I have to write this post on my Powerbook. My Powerbook only detects 2 or 3 possible networks to connect.
I rebooted, etc. and that did not work. I shut the Powerbook down so that it would not "compete" with the iMac and that did not work either.
    Any suggestions/ideas?

    Hello Wireless groupies:
I have had wireless problems with my laptop and my power mac this week, but all is well for me now.
The grass roots issues of wireless communication in terms of physics are related to amplitude and frequency. The amplitude is controlled (signal strength) by the power setting of the router and the portable device. The amount of power in the signal is measured in watts per square meter and is controlled by the broadcasting units settings.
The frequency at which the router broadcasts is changed by channels available in both units. I believe the portable units scan each channel for base station transmissions just like the radio in your car/lorry . The frequencies associated with each channel on the base transmitter can be assigned by the user for the best reception in the local broadcast area, most likely your home. The area which you operate has many different interference parameters which degrade signal strength just as in your portable radio reception. In the base station world it is based upon digital transmission encrypted (D to A) into an analog signal then decrypted at the laptop from analog to digital signal.(A to D). Experimentation is probably the only method to determine which is the best frequency to operate between your devices.
It should be noted that the new Imac's have an extended frequency range because they use a 'N' class wifi set of components. The N class wifi allows for higher frequencies and extended ranges. A base station which is a G class wifi can only broadcast in the lower frequency range and hence the availability of the higher frequencies of the new Imac are irrelevant because the Imac must receive only what is is transmitted in the 'G' range, 'N' class reception and hence the benefits of higher frequencies are not available. The only solution is to have 'N' class devices through out the network, otherwise everything reverts to the 'G' class range of lower frequencies. The solution to extend the frequency range of the network is to upgrade ethernet cards and base stations, so that 'N' class frequency transmission can be utilized.
The network will work with 'G' and 'N' devices but the network is only as good as the lower class device of transmission and reception.
I would start by getting an extreme network airport base station and then experimenting with different channels at a midpoint power transmission. The best frequency would be one which delivers the most power at a set power transmission level (signal strength). The higher the frequency the greater the penetration through walls, beams, people, dogs, cats, pipes, tabletops....:). I would then experiment with the power levels for the range which you want to cover, most likely just your home and not your entire neighborhood.
In my house I use channel 6 and power level 5 from a 2wire gateway/router, which is in the G extreme class range. I have always used channel 6 but I have tried power levels 3, 4 and 5. The biggest interference variable being weather and cordless phones. The cordless phones operate in the 2.4 GHZ range and the 900 MHZ range. The phone directly above my router is a 900MHZ phone and it never interferes with the 2.4 GHZ wifi network. I think the worst phone to have with a G class network are the 5.4GHZ phones because they actually use some of the same wireless bandwidth. A 'N' class network would probably be a better choice if you want to use a 5.4GHZ phone system.
    good luck

  • My new iMac cannot detect my canon scanner

I just got a new iMac with the latest Mountain Lion update however, when I tried to install my CanoScan 8800f it cannot be dected in the USB. But when I tried to connect it to my old computer and used scanner sharing, it works well. I tried isolating the problem by using another macbook that I just recently formatted and installed OSX 10.7 it cannot be detected as well... Is it a compatibility issue, I've downloaded the most recent drivers from canon's website? I quite need some help right now as scanning photos and documents are very important. Thanks!

In image capture is the same. Through USB it can't be detected, on the network scanner sharing from a computer (in this case the macpro) that has the scanner installed, it works like a charm. I use the scanner utility (Print & Scan > open scanner) to scan my images and documents rather than the scanner software it comes with. I don't find anything wrong using it as I've used other scanners on my laptop Brother, HP, and Apple's scanner utility doesn't fail.\
Basically this is what I'm looking at right now the scanner is connected in the USB port and its not recognizing it. I also tried other ports, same result.

  • New imac has only one firewire 800 port?

Is there a hub or repeater you can use instead of daisy chaining. Can't figure out why my old imac has two firewire ports and the new imac has one. How are others managing multiple hard drives? I wish to use a hub for my firewire connections. What is the best way. thanks

You can locate Firewire hubs however they are expensive. I have had 3 Firewire 800 external HD's daisy chained together for 3 years that work flawlessly. The drives I have come with 2 FW 800 ports so this is quite easy, there are several top quality external HD's that are similar including:
    OWC Mercury Pro line
Lacie Quadra D2 line (this is what i have)
    G-Tech G series line
All of these drives have similar specifications and are all high quality products. I think you will find them to be the most recommended on these forums.
BTW your old iMac had 1 Firewire port and 1 Firewire 800 port not 2 firewire ports.

  • New iMac can't see Laserwriter Select connected to a PC on same LAN-- why?

I've just returned to the Mac universe after a five year hiatus. When I discovered how well Macs play with PCs and Unix these days, I decided to come back.
There's just one issue: I can't print to my Laserwriter Select 360, connected by parallel port to a Windows XP Pro PC on my LAN. My new iMac doesn't see the printer at all. The imac does see the PC's workgroup in the Network Neighborhood, and I can mount the shared volumes of that PC on the mac with no problem, so the Mac can talk to the PC for filesharing, anyway. (smb:// address used)
Applecare has no clue why I can't see the printer. They told me to turn on Windows Sharing and Print Sharing, but that had no effect. The Windows machines on my LAN can all see and print to the shared Laserwriter Select 360, no problem. They're all running Windows XP pro, latest patches.
The iMac of course has the latest Tiger. All machines are on my internal subnet 192.168.0.*.
I just got a new cartridge for the Laserwriter, and there's no reason to retire it-- that printer works great. I just can't believe/accept that the iMac can't be made to print to an Apple printer! (Also, I've heard that appletalk->ethernet bridge solutions are flaky so that's not an ideal route).
    Any/all ideas welcome.
    imac g5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Here's the result. The PC is on 192.168.0.2, and the iMac was assigned .18 by DHCP.
I just tried adding a lexmark printer to the PC (over USB) to see if there might be some difference. The other windows box on the lan sees the LexMark same as it sees the Laserwriter (and both show up in the output of smbclient below). Needless to say, the iMac doesn't see the LexMark either.
Thanks for your help with this one...

  • Brand new iMac cannot pair bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse

    Hi there!
Just received brand new iMac 21" yesterday. Unboxed it, turned it on and none of both bluetooth devices (keyboard and magic mouse) managed to get paired.
I was able to connect a USB mouse to log into the Mac. Did all turn off/on Bluetooth, turn off/on iMac several times with no luck. Weird thing is that when I lift keyboard on a 30 degree angle above my desk it seems to actually pair with the iMac but then when back to original position it disconnects.
I've tried the magic mouse with my 2008 Macbook and works flawlessly. After several attempts never managed to pair magic mouse with iMac and as said earlier keyboard is not working on a standard position on my desk. It is frustrating to have paid close to 2,000$ for something that does not even work out of the box... Any ideas or suggestions?
I'm planning to take it today to nearest Apple Stores but have a bad feeling about "genius" folks being able to help me out. Would be worth changing iMac for new one?
    Thanks a lot in advanced!

Thanks Barry! If SCM reset means the following:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
I've done that several times yesterday with no success. "SMC Reset" sounds quite fancy but then you google it and find that is a "simple" shut down and restart protocol... I tried "shutting down" by both selecting option via OS and also physically on the button behind screen.
I appreciate the help but unless I've done that "simple" protocol wrong it is not working.
Sorry for the frustration from my side. It just seems too much of a vague story when you hear Apple friends talking things about "the best OS", "best desktop",...and then you pay about $2,000 and find this yourself.
If anyone else interested I commit to keep this up to date with the feedback I'll get from "genius" folks today. Hopefully they'll prove themselves to live up to their position naming.

  • My new iMac cannot detect old MacBook Pro HDD (as external with bootcamp)

I just setup the brand new iMac 27. I hooked up the old HDD from my MacBook Pro (with bootcamp). I can only see the windows files but not the MAC files like iTunes, iPhoto, and etc. I initially thought maybe the OS so I plug in my wife's older version iMac and also seeing only the windows files. When I do the eject, it said there are 2 partitions and if I only want to eject one of them or both but then it shows only one drive.
Anyone knows how I can detect the MAC files so I can retrieve all my files back?

The HDD was still good. I used the Windows to read the Mac files and it read OK (need to install some 3rd party software). It didn't convert anything but only allow it to read the MAC files from Windows OS. But when I connect to the MAC OS, it won't see it!

  • New imac--Cannot find imovie

I bought a new imac over a month ago and i cannot find imovie. I have iDVD, itunes, iphoto but not imovie. did a search on finder and all and i cannot find it. Where could it be?

That's strange. I thought all new iMacs had iMovie pre-installed and in the Applications folder as part of the iLife package. Mine did.
Maybe for some reason it wasn't installed for you and you have to do from the installation disk. Failing that get back to where you bought it from and complain I guess.
    Hope you find it.

  • New iMac, 24" 3.06 Ghz - WIRED Connection Problem

Hi All - This machine has been in service 2 weeks. About a week ago, the connectivity to the internet has become faulty. I can successfully connect to a web site, but after about a minute or so, it will drop. Using the same browsers and MacOS on a MacBook Pro, there are no problems. I have disabled and made inactive, all network options except for ethernet. Still to no avail...
    Suggestions are most welcome.
I saw a suggestion on a post concerning junky wireless connections to re-install the os to an earlier version, and may reluctantly try that.
    This is a true disappointment.

The only way we will see this problem resolved is for everyone having the problem to call Apple Care and get this problem elevated. With all the posts on this forum concerning this issue I was surprised that the techs at Apple I spoke with were not aware of any widespread wifi issues with the iMac.

  • Installing Box Set SL on new iMac - cannot boot from DVD...

    Hi MacHive
I downloaded Lion today but wanted to install SL on a external USB-Partition because there are 2 PPC games I still like to play every now and then (Homeworld 2 and Alpha Centauri). Then I can boot into SL on my external drive and play the games from there, and having Lion and everything else on the internal HD.
So I started the install (after Disk Utility successfully verified the target disk), it succeeded into copying all the required .pkg into place and at the end of the installer log there are the following messages:

At that time, it should restart with the DVD and finish the installation. However, I get the BONG! (good)  and the grey apple  (good), but then it stops (I never get to the grey moving circle  ;-) and soon after, the DVD stops spinning in the drive and nothing progresses anymore.
Retrying to restart normally: same effect. Restarting with "c" key: same effect, restarting with "alt" key - I get my internal HDs and the DVD to choose (but obviously not my target disk), but choosing the DVD results, once more, in the same effect.
The disc has no scratches and I used this disc to install SL successfully some time ago.
Do you know how I can bring SL to the external HD? Is this iMac "too new" to be restarted with the Box Set Mac OS X  (supposedly, this is 10.6.0 or so... don't know).
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Fabio

Thanks Linc....   In an embarassing lack of concentration I didn't think that I should use the iMac's original disks (10.6.4) and not the box set one (10.6.0 or so). This solved the issue and I could install SL without further troubles. TY again.

  • What I Learned About Transferring Stuff To A New iMac

Just got the new 21.5" iMac with Fusion drive.  First time that I ever attempted transferring from the old to the new.  I wanted my excel/word docs and photos in particular to transfer.  That was my main goal anyhow.  But on the prompts from the new computer I transferred the whole shebang, not exactly knowing what the whole shebang would be....the only broad categories given by the system at the time were Users, Settings, Documents, and I think one more thing I cannot recall.  Had the option to check or uncheck the four boxes, they were pre-checked by apple, I assumed this was the common thing to do so I just did it.
I was going to use Numbers this time on this computer and avoid having Microsoft Office for Mac on the computer and all of its trash program...well...all that transferred over....so now Excel 2008 works, which is a good thing, but I  know I have the undesirable files loaded too...not happy with that but it is what it is.
Makes me wonder what other things were on old computer I could have lived without on new....on a side note, right after the computer sprung to life and said it was ready to go it gave me a message the Flipmac4 was not the right version or something.  Not sure how much it is needed or if it is outdated.  I think it has something to do with watching videos.  Perhaps I can uninstall it permanently and still watch Youtube and other vids.  Anyone know about this please pitch in.
It is nice to have all the photos and documents transfer over seemlessly like they did I just wish there was a way to be more selective in the process maybe I would have nixed Microsoft Office for Mac and other thing...I dunno....not really complaining just expressing what I have learned today....Please respond with things I might have done better if you know of anything so next time, maybe another three years from now ha ha, I can be better at it....
    THANKS ALL!
PS, even the passords for the internet apparently transferred....like when I went to sign on the apple communities the user ID and password were already pre-filled with my data.

I would first go through Setup Assistant (which opens automatically) without migrating anything. Run Software Update to install the latest updates from Apple, but otherwise use the iMac +as is+ for a while. When you are satisfied that it is working 100% perfectly, you can run Migration Assistant from Applications/Utilities/. This way, if you have a problem, it will be easier to troubleshoot.
Note: Since this is a refurb iMac, it is possible that it will have Leopard pre-installed instead of Snow Leopard. It should come with a disc for upgrading to Snow Leopard, if Leopard is pre-installed. If that is the case with this refurb, you should upgrade to Snow Leopard and test run it for a while before migrating the user data from the G5.
In Migration Assistant, you will be asked to select the data source. You can connect the two Mac, but you can also use that external drive with the clone. If that external drive is FireWire 400, you will need a cable that goes from FireWire 800 (9-pin) to FireWire 400 (6-pin), for example
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394B96036/
because the new iMac will only have FireWire 800 (if it's the early 2009 model). If the drive has USB 2.0, you can connect it that way to the new iMac. The option in Migration Assistant is +From Time Machine backup or other disk+. The external drive clone is the "other disk."
Then, Migration Assistant will ask what to migrate. Here, you should select to migrate only Users. Do not select +Applications, Settings, or Other...+ This will migrate user data from the old installation and leave everything else alone.
That is the easiest way. You can also connect the external drive clone and use Finder to copy the files over manually. That's the way I usually do it myself, so that I have more control over what gets transferred.
