New in NW04s: FL069 TABLES parameters are obsolete (in function modules)

Can somebody explain what is the fundamental reason for this behaviour in NW04s?
In Netweaver 2004s system (like ERP2005 ) you get a warning message in SE37:
FL069 TABLES parameters are obsolete! when defining quite ordinary tables parameter using LIKE and reference to a structure in ddic.
I now speak normal function modules, not RFC enabled.
This example of tables parameter definition will cause the warning message:

I of course looked the additional help provided by this message FL069. I understood it as following:
you should stop using TABLES parameter and more often use CHANGING parameter by referring a TABLE TYPE defined in dictionary.
if using CHANGING parameter and still want to pass the header line of your internal table you should use a separate parameter (EXPORT or CHANGING parameter)
Developers have too much used TABLES parameters for passing internal tables for reading (by value) rather than to be modified (by reference). As a consequence, fm could have change the header line without caller to know it.
in my opinion the message help is missleadingly telling that header line is no longer passed to function module if TABLES parameter is used. I made a small test program and fm (with TABLES paramerer), and everything worked as before.
The warning message can be ignored by pressing Enter a few times and your fm with TABLES parameter works as it had in older versions of Netweaver.
SAP is still using a lot of TABLES parameters in their own function modules. For example SD_SALES_HEADER_MAINTAIN.
So what is the point of this warning message while everything still works as it used to be and SAP uses this same "OBSOLETE" feature itself? Is there anything more fundamental behind this message? Like TABLES paremeters will no longer work in future versions of ABAP (or header line passing will be ignored in future versions) and therefore developers should switch to CHANGING/EXPORT parameters with TABLE TYPES as soon as possible??
Please understand that I don't need any assistance how to avoid this message, just interested to share your opinions what is the purpose of this warning message.

E_T_DATA     LIKE     SFLIGHT (which I change to YBWxxxx)
The moment I change to YBWxxxxx it gives me that error '"TABLES parameters are obsolete! "'
and unfortunately hitting enter several times is not helping  either

    I have created a function module in ECC6.0 and I need an internal table as a parameter but SAP will not allow it to be created as a tables parameter only as a changing parameter. How do you do this as a changing parameter. I am using structure type MMPUR_TEXTLINES.

    DOWNLOAD is obsolete FM in ECC 6. To get the same functionality , we need to use
    CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>FILE_SAVE_DIALOG  method (It provides the File selection feature)
    and
    GUI_DOWNLOAD function module.(It downloads the internal table from program to presentation server)

  • Accessing internal table of main program inside function module...

    I have function module say ZFUNC and main program say ZMAIN and internal table defined as IT_TAB inside ZMAIN but not passed as parameter to Function module ZFUNC.
    If I want to access the field value of IT_TAB of  main program ZMAIN inside ZFUNC during debugging then, I simply put <b>(ZMAIN)IT_TAB-amount</b> in ABAP debugger and then change it when the debugger is inside ZFUNC.
    How can I write code to change the value of internal table of main program in function module ZFUNC instead of doing in debugger ? I guess I have to use some field symbols, but not sure. Please suggest.

    Yes, you do need to use a field symbol.  Say for example, you had a internal table called IMARC in your program and you want to access it later in a funciton module, you would do something like this.
      data: xmarc type marc.
      field-symbols: <imarc> type marc_upl_tt.

      field = '(ZPROGRAM_NAME)IMARC[]'.
      assign (field) to <imarc>.
      loop at <imarc> into xmarc.

  • How BAPI Tables parameters are passed by reference

    Hi Gurus,
                     I have a genuine doubt regarding BAPI parameters. I would like to point out the genreal rules of bapi like,
    1. BAPI parameters should be passed by value. (Because they are rfc fm's. So both systems will be in different servers. This is the normal scenario.)
    2. But the tables parameters in BAPI can't be passed by value. Instead they are passed by reference.
    3. I know they use some kind of delta mechanism to transfer tables parameters to remote servers.
    So gurus I would like to know what exactly happens when a tables parameter is passed. And also I didn't understand the delta mechanism. Kindly guide me.

    You'll see in [SAP Library - RFC - Parameter Handling in Remote Calls|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/22/042551488911d189490000e829fbbd/frameset.htm] that tables are not passed by reference when you use RFC. It also explains the delta.
    When you make a remote function call, the system handles parameter transfer differently than it does with local calls.
    TABLES parameters
    The actual table is transferred, but not the table header. If a table parameter is not specified, an empty table is used in the called function.
    The RFC uses a delta managing mechanism to minimize network load during parameter and result passing. Internal ABAP tables can be used as parameters for function module calls. When a function module is called locally, a parameter tables is transferred u201Cby reference". This means that you do not have to create a new local copy. RFC does not support transfer u201Cby referenceu201D. Therefore, the entire table must be transferred back and forth between the RFC client and the RFC server. When the RFC server receives the table entries, it creates a local copy of the internal table. Then only delta information is returned to the RFC client. This information is not returned to the RFC client every time a table operation occurs, however; instead, all collected delta information is passed on at once when the function returns to the client.
    The first time a table is passed, it is given an object-ID and registered as a "virtual global table" in the calling system. This registration is kept alive as long as call-backs are possible between calling and called systems. Thus, if multiple call-backs occur, the change-log can be passed back and forth to update the local copy, but the table itself need only be copied once (the first time).

    Unlike transactions and executable programs, dialog modules do not start a new SAP LUW. Calls to update-task function modules from a dialog module use the same update key as the ones in the calling program. The result is that calls to update function modules from a dialog module are executed only if a COMMIT WORK statement occurs in the calling program.
    If you place a COMMIT WORK in a dialog module, it does commit changes to the database (for example, with UPDATE).However, it does not start the update task. The function modules are not actually executed until a COMMIT WORK statement occurs in the calling program.
    If you use dialog modules, try to avoid including calls to update function modules in subroutines called with PERFORM ON COMMIT. In general, any occurrence of PERFORM ON COMMIT(with or without update-task function calls) in a dialog module can be problematic.
    This is because dialog modules have their own roll area, which disappears when the module finishes. Consequently, all local data (including data used for parameter values when calling an update function module) disappears as soon as the commit in the main program is reached.
    If you must use this method in a dialog module (i.e. include the call to an update-task function in a subroutine), you must ensure that the values of the actual parameters still exist when the update-task function actually runs. To do this, you can store the required values with EXPORT TO MEMORY and then import them back into the main program (IMPORT FROM MEMORY) before the COMMIT WORK statement
    Creating Update Function Modules
    To create a function module, you first need to start the Function Builder. Choose Tools ® ABAP Workbench, Function Builder. For more information about creating function modules, refer to the ABAP Workbench Tools documentation.
    To be able to call a function module in an update work process, you must flag it in the Function Builder. When you create the function module, set the Process Type attribute to one of the following values:
    Update with immediate start
    Set this option for high priority ("V1") functions that run in a shared (SAP LUW). These functions can be restarted by the update task in case of errors.
    Update w. imm. start, no restart
    Set this option for high priority ("V1") functions that run in a shared (SAP LUW). These functions may not be restarted by the update task.
    Update with delayed start
    Set this option for low priority ("V2") functions that run in their own update transactions. These functions can be restarted by the update task in case of errors.
    To display the attributes screen in the Function Builder, choose Goto ® Administration.
    Defining the Interface
    Function modules that run in the update task have a limited interface:
    Result parameters or exceptions are not allowed since update-task function modules cannot report on their results.
    You must specify input parameters and tables with reference fields or reference structures defined in the ABAP Dictionary.

  • Definition/Explanation for "obsolete" (for function modules) / unicode?

    Hi,
    I did not find any definition from SAP regarding obsolete function modules, what does SAP mean with obsolete in this context? Is this only relevant for customers which are also switching to unicode enabled systems? Do I have to replace this fm's when we are not switching to unicode during the upgrade?

    Hello Dietmar,
    my understanding of obsolete function modules is, that they
    - are not supported by SAP any longer
    - no new functionality will be implemented
    - somtimes doesn't work (I've used a function module, that becomes obsolete with a hot package upgrade, which causes a dump, to inform the user of this fm, that it has become obsolete)
    We're in an upgrade from 4.6B to ECC6.0 and we have identified some function modules, marked as obsolete. Until know we have not decided, how to proceed with them, but I think, we will replace them by newer ones (even, if it's not mandatory to replace them, when it works, as expected).

    Hi All,
    I know that table TFDIR stores primary information about any function module.
    Could anyone tell me where the code of that function module gets stored in?
    Also.. If I want to write an ABAP code to read the function module code then what is the best possible solution?

    Apologies for the same!
    The codes are not stored in any table, they are stored as cluster.
    To read the code, you can use READ REPORT.
    But there you must provide the Include Name For Example , If you want to read the code of READ_TEXT,
    READ REPORT 'LSTXDU01'.
    You can get this include name inside include LSTXDUXX
    Table TFDIR also stores the program name and include number.
    You need to truncate first 3 char 'SAP' and append UXX at the end and that will be your program name.
    Then we can use READ REPORT!!!

  • Insert new Master Data Record for an InfoObject using a Function Module

    Hi @ all,
    is there any Function Module for creating a new master data record for an InfoObject? Implementing a FM for inserting a master data record into a master data table is done quickly. I think there will be problems with inconsistency implementing a FM using a simple "Insert" Statement. Isn´t it?
    I know it is possible to maintain an InfoObject in RSA1 (Master data IO> right click>Maintain Master data>execute(F8)> ...) but I have another requirement for using a FM.

  • Table with type ANY in function module

    Hi all
    I want to use a function module in different programs. I want to pass always a table and in a string the name of the structure, so that I can access the data with ASSIGN and the passed structure name.
    For a structure I can use the type ANY, but if I want to use a table in a function module, I need to define a table type.
    Is there a way to define a tabletype with the type ANY? A Workaround would be fine too.

    ANY TABLE is used to type a parameter, or field symbol, that can be a table of any type or structure.
    ANY is used to type a parameter, or field symbol, that can be any type. You can't, however, use any table operations on a parameter/field-symbol typed as ANY. For that, you have to use ANY TABLE.
    The same applies to ANY. You can pass to the method a data object, without specifying its type (i.e, in dynamic programs).
    Suppose that I need to split a line into a table, but I don't know the structure of this line:
    I have a method:
    codeMETHOD split_line_in_table IMPORTING im_line TYPE ANY
    EXPORTING ex_table TYPE ANY TABLE.
    [/code]
    codeMETHOD split_line_in_table.
    SPLIT im_line AT separator INTO TABLE ex_table.
    ENDMETHOD.[/code]
    Now, i can pass this method a line of ANY structure and get a table without specifying its structure.
