New Lease of Life for Imac Graphite DV?

Hi,
My apologies if this question has been asked a zillion times before....
I have an Imac Graphite - I think it was called "Special Edition" when I bought it about 8 years ago! I have recently got interested in "Apple-Type" things again and want to see if I can get the Imac into best state possible. Ultimately I will give to my sister-in-law who just does a bit of word processing, email and web surfing, so I don't mind spending a bit on it for an HD etc. That's the background, here's the details:
400 MHZ PowerPC G3
256Mb of memory (on 2 128Mb sticks)
Hard Drive is 13 Gb
OS is 10.2.8 - I up graded it in about 2003
The firmware level is not known, but I have a suspicion that when I upgraded to the new operating system a firmware revision will have been done?
When I do the "OPT-APPLE-O-F" startup I get the message: *"Apple PowerMac 2, 1 2.4f1 BootRom built on 2/18/00"*
I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers to both what is possible and what works well in the following areas:
1. I think the maximum memory is 1 GB? but reading various threads on here it looks like you have to be very careful when selecting memory as to what particular type you use. For instance, I have seen references to PC100 and PC133? If it helps I could pull out one of the sticks and tell you what the part number is for one of the existing?
2. I think there is a limit on the size of hard drive that can actually be addressed, but I'm not sure what that limit is. Clearly, there is no point in buying a 250 Megabits Drive is if the computer will only recognize 100 Mb? Are there any particular manufacturers brands of hard drive that people would recommend?
3. What is the highest level of operating system, that can be sensibly used with this machine? I have a feeling it may be 10.4, but I am not sure where I would go to try and obtain a copy. Does it need to be specific to my machine or can I use any upgrade, or is there a generic version that will work with anything? Can this software still be obtained from Apple? (They stopped sending out updates for my 10.2.8 some while ago.)
4. Lastly any good sites or links that I might look at that "talk you through" any of the upgrade processes?
Sorry for the length of the post!
Regards,
Phil.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The iMac with the 13GB HDD indeed was the iMac DV SE.
1. The maximum RAM is 1GB (2x 512MB PC100 168pin DIMMs) good quality PC133 will down-speed and work but not all PC133 will. Buy from a Mac-savvy supplier like Crucial:
Crucial UK.
2. The addressing limit is 137GB (which translates into about 128GB of actual capacity). So a 120GB HDD is most appropriate. On the iMac DV no partitioning is required but you may if you wish. The bus is an ATA33 so any ATA/IDE drive will be fine (not SATA though). I put a 7,200rpm 60GB Seagate in my iMac DV about 4 years ago and was impressed at the speed. I was also impressed at the low noise of the Western Digital 320GB drive I put in the iMac G4 we have.
3. With a 7,200 rpm 120Gb drive, and 1GB RAM you shouldn't have any issues running Mac OS 10.4.11 which is the very latest supported. Getting a copy of it however could be problematic. I can't think of anywhere to get one in the UK. You'll need to have a look around Google etc. You should purchase the Retail version only. This came on a black DVD. Machine-specific versions (especially if they say iMac) are likely to be for Intel processors and won't work. You sound like you are aware that you must have the correct Firmware update before installing 10.3 or higher. Hopefully you have OS 9 still installed or have the original orange install discs and can re-install it to confirm the firmware is correct:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
4. Try the Macworld guide:
http://www.macworld.com/article/2496/2001/10/howtoimac.html
Since 2001 drives have got cooler so it's fine to use a 7,200rpm HDD.
Hope that helps.

    The latest version of iPhoto which can operation with OS X 10.4.11 is iPhoto 7 which is part of iLife 08.  You might be able to find a copy of iLIfe 08 on Amazon.com or Ebay.com.
    iLife 08's full system requirements are:
    Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 processor
    iMovie ’08 requires a Mac computer with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0 GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9 GHz or faster)
    iDVD ’08 requires 733MHz or faster processor
    512 MB of RAM; 1 GB recommended; high-definition video requires at least 1 GB of RAM

  • Original OS 9 software for the iMac Graphite

    just curious i picked up an older iMac at a thrift store however, of course it didn't come with any software. i thought i could load OS X.2 which i did, and that was fine, but so i ordered the software from someone on ebay, but my question is this: will the OS 9 and 10.0.4 software for the iMac Graphite work on my iMac. the specs on the one i bought are: indigo, 500, 20GB, 128 RAM, CD-RW.

    Hi, Tim -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
    Your indigo iMac 500MHz model can be one of three iMac model series. Each has its own minimum OS version, which is the one it originally shipped with. These are -
    • iMac (Summer 2000) - OS 9.0.4
    • iMac (Early 2001) - OS 9.1 (and OSX 10.0.3 on later models)
    • iMac (Summer 2001) - OS 9.1 and OSX 10.0.4
    All of the OS 9 versions above, the ones that shipped with those models, are model-specific versions - that means that a retail OS 9 Install CD of equal version may not work. However, a retail OS 9 Install CD of the next higher version will work.
    It is doubtful that CDs that came with a graphite iMac will work for the machine in question, unless the graphite model is of the same model series as the indigo one (there were graphite models in all three series given above, plus one in at least one other model series).
    To find out which model series yours belongs to, click the Support tab at the top of any of these pages. On the new page, scroll down, look to the lower right of the page for the section About Your Support Coverage. Enter your machine's serial number in the box, click the Go button.

  • How do I make a private album in new Photos for IMac?

    How do I make a private album in the new Photos for IMac? I had one in iPhoto, and now that all the photos migrated to Photos my private album is not hidden anymore. Thanks for help!

    Photos does not hide photos in albums at all.  Photos can only be hidden from Moments, Collections, Years.
    If you want private albums, move the photos in questions to a different Photos Library, that you keep hidden.

  • Catalogs too new for iMac's Final Cut Pro Computer

    Final Cut Pro on my iMac will not read edits I started on my MacBook Pro. Which I had purchased recently.
    How do I get iMac FCP to be updated as it tells me that the catalogs are too new?
    I just tried to check for software updates and that doesn't bring anything up.
    I would like to prevent from downloading it again.
    When I open Final Cut Pro and have the External Hard Drive connected (which I previously used on my MacBook Pro) it comes up with: The operation couldn’t be completed. The catalog is too new.
    Thank YOu for your help,
    Nikki

    Are you sure you have the same version of FCP on both Macs? Older versions of FCP will not open projects created with newer versions.

    Yes, the ColorPicker would be great, except as far as I can tell there's no way to assign names to the colors in my custom data provider. The user needs to know the name of the color (eg. P01 - Wisteria), but the ColorPicker only shows the hex values. Unless there's a way to change that?
    Repasting the two code chunks from above, which didn't display properly:
    Works, but doesn't show swatches:
    TileList.addEventListener(Event.CHANGE, changeColor);
    var colorBox:ColorTransform = new ColorTransform();
    function changeColor(e:Event):void{
       colorBox.color = tileList.selectedItem.data;
       box_mc.transform.colorTransform = colorBox; }
    Shows swatches, but doesn't work:
    var aBoxes:Array = new Array(); var i:uint = 0;
    var printColorHex:Array = new Array(0xfac9c2, 0xFF0000, 0x0000CC, 0x00CC00, 0xFFFF00);
    var printColorNames:Array = new Array("R-01 Pale Coral", "Cranberry", "Sky", "Forest", "July");
    var dpPrintColors:DataProvider = new DataProvider();
    for(i=0; i < printColorHex.length; i++) {
         aBoxes[i] = new MovieClip();
         drawBox(aBoxes[i], printColorHex[i]);    // draw box w next color in array
         dpPrintColors.addItem( {label:printColorNames[i], source:aBoxes[i]} );
    aTl.dataProvider = dpPrintColors;
    function drawBox(box:MovieClip,color:uint):void {
                 box.graphics.beginFill(color, 1.0);
                 box.graphics.drawRect(0, 0, 140, 60);
                 box.graphics.endFill();

  • Returning New Old 3.06 Ghz iMac For New New 3.06 Ghz iMac

    Well of course I could not wait any longer and pulled the trigger on the 3.06ghz machine last Tuesday. Yes, I know I know you all have me to thank for this week actually being the long awaited imac update Tuesday. Just call me Murphy. Or maybe you don't want to thank me from the looks of many unhappy campers posts flying about.
    But getting back on point I'm going to bring my nice new "old" baby back for the new new one with the 4 GB DDR3 RAM and the Nvidia GT130 - not to mention the 1 TB HDD vs my current 500 GB drive.
    My question is, should I wipe this machine clean? I've got some stuff on it but in all honesty held off on really dumping everything I have (did not put my windows os or stuff on it yet etc) in case there was an update within 14 days of my buying it. So it's safe and still pretty clean.
    Do I have to wipe this clean or can I trust Apple to simply re-image on it's way down the refurb line?
    Any help much appreciated. Here's to hoping I don't have to eat the 10% rsf and can swap for even price!

    Hmmm I don't know.... The more I research and the more bmarks and GPU Z screens that pop up, the more this "GT130" smells to me like an *NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS.* Which actually is a bit clock slower than the previous 3 ghz 8800GS - which is actually an 8800 GTS btw (clocked down a bit).
    None the less the 9800m is a decent enough card. It's certainly a good choice for efficiency as it reportedly runs 75Mhz max. But unless it's an oc'd Apple Special (and they very well could be - often are) it's not better than it's predecessor.
    Check out these links if you want to see some interesting test screens regarding the debate of what this "gt 130" card really is.

  • Processor Upgrade for iMac G3

    Hello, I didn't see any particular posts specifically pertaining to the slot loading iMac (Graphite)..I hope someone can help me out.
    I have a G3 Graphite iMac, upgraded RAM currently running Tiger. I used to use it but wiped it clean, re-installied the OS and created a separate account for my 8y/o son, so essentially there aren't many apps on there. For some reason it's running slower than it should, even with just Safari open. Is there a fix or possibly a processor upgrade for this model (I keep seeing that there isn't, but I want to be sure).
    It's either that or constantly hearing my son complain of the lagtime and ask for our laptops instead...

    According to Mactracker at one point there was a 700 MHz model available in Graphite & Snow. If you could find a 700 MHz G3 CRT iMac logic board on eBay it might be possible to upgrade the processor speed. You could also install a Matshita SR-8184 or SR-8186 DVD-ROM drive.
    There's firmware available for both drives that allow them to be flashed to RPC1 or region free meaning they can play DVDs from any region in the world. Normally the drive is restricted to being able to only play Region 3 DVDs from the US. If you order a Matshita SR-8184CD optical drive from www.welovemacs.com call their 800 number listed on their website & be sure to ask for Jessica or Faith since some of the optical drives they sell don't have RPC1 firmware available for them.

  • I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.  I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?

    I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.
    I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
    When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
    Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
    So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
    Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

    Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
    The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
    Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
    Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
    Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
    At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
    These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

    After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

    My gmail, which is correctly configured for Mail with gmail SMTP and Google IMAP, works for awhile on Mail, which I leave open while working on other applications. But several times a day I get msg from Google: "We recently blocked a sign-in attempt to your Google Account" . . . and requiring me to verify my account details, re-enter passwords, confirm security settings (or change them from "disable" to "enable less secure methods" and so on). In Mail I also have tried "taking all accounts online", and re-entering my gmail password inside Mail account settings. These steps successfully re-set comms between gmail and Mail ... for awhile, then it happens again. Enough occurrences over a work day that I just quit Mail and revert to accessing gmail directly. Apple Care advisor and an Apple knowledge base article say that Apple can't deal with this, as gmail is third-party app, and they refer me to gmail, and so far I've found nothing helpful there.
    From today I also have several instances of a window saying "Mail has unexpectedly closed" and asking me to Re-open it.
    I also use Yahoo mail, which stops working with Mac Mail at the same time as gmail, but I do not receive notices to re-verify from Yahoo.
    I recently upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite. The Mail problem happened occasionally with Mavericks but is far more frequent with Yosemite.

  • Need to do a clean install only have OSx for iMAC disk

    Cant find original OSX disk but have OSX that came with my sons iMAC but it will not work?

    Remote installation of an inappropriate system still results in an inappropriate system.  As others have indicated, Burton needs to find or replace his original disk and abandon any thoughts of using his son's iMac disk.
    Burton, note that you can call Apple customer service and request a new set of disks for a small shipping and handling fee.  You just need to have your machine handy to give them the serial number.

  • I have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program.

    I have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and upgraded the memory and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program. I can see the hard drive in the disk utilities window however it wont let me do anything.
    It is a seagate 1TB SATA II drive however it is displaying it as a 7.3 TB.
    If anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them.
    I have tried to erase and partition and get the same error message each time, 'Input/Output error'.
    I have tried starting the thing with the install disk which is Mac OS X (Tiger?) which came with the computer. No good.
    Anyone?

    Thats correct. I can see it in the list however when I attempt to erase it or partition it it's like it's not being found or recognised and it throws up the input/output error message. I am pretty sure that the sensor it attached correctly and it is a SATA drive. I can see all the infor regarding the drive when disk utility is open and it all looks good but I cant access it or do anything with it. It's taunting me!
    The install disk is in the drive and the install program runs right up to the point where you have to select the location for the install and there is just nothing in the box where you have to select the hard drive icon.
    I have my suspiscions about the drive but any help would be appreciated.
