New MacMini with SLS as Mail Service

Hi to all,
my company needs to replace the older Mail Server (a DP powerPC / macosx server10.4),
we're targeting on MacPro 2.66 quadcore but i take a look at MiniMac shipped with SLserver and a double HardDisk and i think it's very interesting.
Considering that our Mail Service now supports 40-50 email accounts (maybe 60 in near future) , some of them with a huge daily traffic, does anyone of you tried macmini in this network situation?
What's your opinion about?
thank you

I have an original CoreDuo Mac Mini. I had been successfully using it with a 32" Sony Bravia LCD TV for more than two years using the DVI-VGA adapter and a standard VGA cable. After updating to OS 10.5.3 or later, I suddenly lost support for the VGA connection. When I reverted back to 10.5.2 things worked fine with the VGA port. I recently needed to update to 10.5.4 and the same thing happened. So, I purchased the Belkin DVI-HDMI cable and now works again, but I had to buy an HDMI switcher because my TV only has one HDMI connection. I guess the video drivers in 10.5.3 and 10.5.4 for the Mac Mini seemed to be the culprit in whacking out the VGA output.

    Hello gerryfromhatfield,
There is a process, an article about how to find your apple id and get access to it. It is named Apple ID: Finding your Apple ID found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5625?viewlocale=en_US
You start at the top, and work your way down.
If you can't remember your Apple ID, you can find it by using the password retrieval process at My Apple ID. Follow these steps to recover your Apple ID name:
Go to My Apple ID and click "Find your Apple ID."
Complete all the required fields that might be associated with your Apple ID.
Note: If multiple email addresses have an Apple ID, select your current or most recently used email address.
    All the best,

  • New MacMini with Samsung 32" TV

I bought a basic MacMini earlier this week to use with my Samsung 32" LCD TV (Model: LE32A457C1DXXU). Now, when I use the DVI to VGA adapter supplied to connect said MacMini to my TV, the TV goes to sleep, as if no input from the Macmini.
I have successfully connected the Macmini using the same cables to a smaller monitor as I thought it might have been the set up (you know, choosing languages, etc) that was the issue. Past that, and still no joy with the Samsung.
I have also successfully connected my older MacBook to the TV and that was fine, TV registered it, all worked perfectly.
    What am I missing here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Install 10.5 server on new MacMini with 10.6 client

Hi, own 10.5 Server. Trying to update hardware. Picked up new Mac Mini 2.4 which comes with 10.6 client. 10.5 Server disc will not boot. There is no upgrade option once booted into 10.6 client, and inserting disc. Remote install also hangs.
How can I install my 10.5 Server on this Mac Mini?

Use Mac OS X 10.6 Server instead, and update it to the current version immediately afterwards. If you somehow get 10.5 installed, you may find that some of the hardware isn't accessible.

  • New problem with searching in Mail

To find specific emails in specific mailboxes, I normally go to that mailbox and use the search function. In the past, the results were limited only to emails in that specific mailbox, that is, one result per individual email.
However, for the last few weeks this has changed so that my search results show multiple but identical hits, one in each of several mailboxes.
For example, I may search in mailbox X for an email I sent that I had flagged Important, but I'll get four identical results listed in mailboxes All Mail, Mailbox X, Sent, and Important.
    I hope that's clear!
Thanks for whatever help you might give me, because this makes sorting through my results very difficult.

Well, posting can be a very helpful thing.
It was only just after posting this question that I saw, seemingly for the first time, the gray selection bar just above the search results. Somehow I guess I'd changed it to 'All Mailboxes' without knowing it. So clicking back to the specific mailbox X resolved the problem.
As Rosanne Roseannadanna once said....   never mind!

  • Mail Services and Backup MX/mail services

I have a question regarding backup mail services and acceptance of incoming messages.
As of last week, I am new to the world of Mail Services in OS X Server 10.4. Last week, our current email server died and I was forced to take an Xserve G4 that had OS X Server 10.4.10 (unlimited) and setup mail services in order to receive and send mail. I went to a website called osx.topicdesk.com and followed their instructions for front-line spam defense and clamAV updating (and switching to clamd) which all appears to be working OK.
Because our old email server was having some hardware issues for the past several months that I had been working on, I had the feeling that failure might happen. So what I did a few months ago was sign up for Google Apps and their mail service. I added their MX records under my primary mail server so that in the case of a failure of my server, all mail would be passed to Gmail and everyone could get to their mail immediately (as any prolonged downtime won't work since this is a daily newspaper). This did work, for when my old server died, all the mail went immediately to the appropriate Google Apps mail accounts. After about a day of setup on the Xserve, I got the mail services running OK. I gave it all the same IP info as the previous server so that the mail would just start working without having to edit DNS records and such.
The problem I am having seems to be this: While I get most mail, some of my mail is still getting sent to the Google Apps accounts. For example, I have one user, Jane Doe, at [email protected] who gets most of their mail from connecting to the OS X Server, but about 2 - 3 emails a day get passed over to the Google Apps server. I have run DNSStuff.com tests on the mail connections, and I always get a good fast response out of the OS X server. My thinking was that mail would only be passed over to backup mail servers if the first server listed in the MX records was unavailable or offline. In all of my testing, my server has responded every time. The server is connecting via a gigabit network connection (good response), is a dual G4 1.33Ghz, 60GB hard drive with 2GB of RAM. This server doesn't do anything else except run Mail services (and web services for squirrelmail), it doesn't even have file sharing turned on.
My old email server was a Pentium II 400mhz with 348MB of RAM, and it caught all mail, so I know that the Xserve should be able to handle the load without being busy. Is there any reason that my Xserve would be rejecting mail and they would be siphoned off to the Google accounts?
Is this even a possible scenario to fix the problem: Setup a backup MX "queue" account somewhere with one of the BackupMX online services that will catch these stray emails and then send it back to the primary server? But then can be turned off quickly to allow mail to go to the Google Apps accounts if my server went down. In other words, the DNS record would show my primary as 1, the backup mx service as 2, the google servers as 3, 4, 5 and so on. Can Backup MX services be turned off quickly like that so that if my server is down and I need email to be accessed immediately then just "turn off" the service (without modifying the DNS since that will take too long to propogate) so that mail bounces over to Google immediately?
I guess my first troubleshooting attempt should be to figure out why my OS X Server is not accepting all mail.
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.
    G

When I first started with the company about 2 years ago, they had a really old Linux box (about 10 years old) that was used to host email. It was horrible. It would run OK, but if it ever went down or had a hiccup, it was an all-day project trying to deal with it. Unfortunately, the company did not want to spend any money on a new server or software of course. The answer I got was "well, it's just email". Sure, but if email EVER goes down for more than 15 seconds, all of the employees go into seizures and scream that the place will have to shut down. I work for a daily newspaper, so everything is running 24/7.
Knowing that one day that box was going to just die, I looked into some backup MX services. As pterobyte had mentioned is that with a secondary MX, the problem is that no one can get their mail at all until the primary server comes back up. I knew if that server ever went down, I had nothing to take its place, so I would have to order something or get a server from another location to use. Being unfamiliar with OS X Mail Services, I knew it would take me awhile to try to setup all the users and such. All the while at the newspaper, they would be screaming bloody murder that they needed email working for news, ads coming in, etc. And when I say if it goes down for 10 minutes they start getting into fetal positions in the floor screaming, I'm not far off exaggerating. I figured I was going to need something in place for them to check email while I worked on the primary.
Back in September/October 2007, I discovered that Google hosted free mail services call Google Apps. With Google, I could setup "matching" accounts and would still be able to use my domain name. You just had to use Google's servers as the higher numbered MX records. Luckily, I set up in time for back in November, the Linux box finally died. When it did, all email successfully went to their counterparts on the Google's servers. I had everyone go to the special Google Apps login site and they were able to check their email fine. I ended up having to take a box from another site and then I had another copy of OS X Server 10.4, so I loaded it and successfully setup email (with lots of help from pterobyte's tutorials). They were on Google's systems for about 2 days.
After the disaster, I went around and setup IMAP accounts on everyone's Thunderbird clients so that if our email server went down, they just simply check that mailbox. The nice thing with the Google IMAP is that they automatically see if emails are hitting that inbox from within their client. Right now, it still remains that the 2 original companies that hit the Google accounts still do. The city government email and email from a sister newspaper. Everything else gets directed to the primary server. Although sometimes that doesn't even work, as tonight I am having to work on a problem involving the Clamd app acting up - taking up nearly 100% of the CPU which in turn caused all the mail to be hung up in the queue. So since the mail server didn't "reject" the mail and grabbed it, their gmail "backup" didn't get anything in it. It was taking me forever to figure out what was going on, so I almost just told them to unplug the network cable from the email server so that everything definitely would be forwarded to gmail.
My wish is that I had a secondary mail server in house to not even worry about it - or better yet, I wished I could just outsource the email administration itself to someone else (like webmail.us which is now MailSafe). That way for the most part, they wouldn't lose email. But of course, the company doesn't want to spend the money or invest. Just gripe when the older equipment we have won't support what they want to do with it.
But the story above explains why I did what I did with the Google's servers. I do appreciate everyone's help and input on this particular problem. I am going to look around at the DNS and talk to at least our sister newspaper to see if I can see how they have their DNS setup.
    Thanks!

  • Mail service Manual 10.6 in Spanish

Does anyone knows where can i get Mail Service Administration Manual 10.6 in Spanish?

Mail should be in /var/imap unless you installed an alternate mail system: you referenced Dovecot? Did you have Dovecot running on SLS?
The /var/imap directory should be existent even if you never enabled SLS's Mail service, with contents like:
    drwxr-xr-x  8 _cyrus  mail  272 Oct 25  2010 db
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 log
    -rw-------     1 _cyrus  mail  144 Oct 25  2010 mailboxes.db
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 msg
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 proc
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 ptclient
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 socket
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 sync
This is from a server that never had Mail enabled..
I have no idea whether the the command you referenced would do a migration if there is no /var/imap directory on the source volume.

  • New email with attachment action disappeared from Finder

Does anybody know what might have happened? I've been using this action for some time, and after upgrading to Mountain Lion it stopped working. Then after some time I discovered that the action is no longer available in the Finder context menu.
Note: I'm using Bitcasa, and the Bitcasa client added some actions of its own under an option called "services".The action "new email with attachment appeared under "services" as well.
I don't think it's a Bitcasa problem as it's been working just fine for several months now. It crapped out after upgrading to ML.

Nevermind, figured it out elsewhere on the suport forum.

  • Windows Mail or Adobe E-mail Service pros / cons ?

With PSE 8 photo sharing by email attachment or photo mail requires a selection (via organizer > edit > preferences > sharing) of Adobe E-mail Service or Windows Mail. What are the pros and cons in making this selection? Side question : Is Windows Live Mail the same as Windows Mail?

A mail client is not bundled with Windows 7, therefore on has to install one. Widows Live Mail is a free download from Microsoft. It performs well.
My workflow is to right click a picture file, go to Send to>Mail recipient, or attach to the e-mail message from within Live Mail
Perhaps someone else with experience with Adobe e-mail service will address this issue.

  • How to reformat the new MacMini Fusion Drive . . .

BACKGROUND:  I am a long time Mac user.  Periodically I reformat the HD on my iMac and reinstall Mac OS X and application software.  This is time consuming but I am retired and have plenty of time to do this.  NOW:  I am planning on purchasing a new MacMini with the 1 TB Fusion Drive.  The drive has 128 GB of flash storage.  I will have an external HD connected to the MacMini.  The external HD will have a bootable partition where Mac OS X Mountain Lion will be installed so I will be able to reformat the 1TB Fusion Drive on the MacMini when I want to do so.
QUESTION:  How do I reformat the 1 TB Fusion Drive on the just released new MacMini with 128 GB of flash storage?  When I use the Disk Utility will it display the 128 GB flash storage as one partition, and the remainder of the 1 TB HD as the second partition?  What are the steps for reformatting the 128 GB of flash storage and the remainder of the 1 TB HD and then installing Mac OS X Mountain Lion on the 128 GB flash storage?
Please - no responses about why in the world would I want to reformat the fusion drive.  This something I simply want to periodically do.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions . . .
    Jim

Here is an article to read on making a fusion drive.
    http://blog.macsales.com/15617-creating-your-own-fusion-drive
There are a ton of them on the web now.  If you haven't reformatted your HD, don't.  Just follow the instructions and fuse the SSD to the HD partition, format it, then restore from your backup.
Keep this in mind, the recovery partition is normally on the HD and not the SSD.  If you wipe the entire HD during your fuse, you will lose it.

  • Account registration with my e-mail

Someone registered a new account with my e-mail address because I just got a "welcome" to skype e-mail.
How is this even possible? Doesn't Skype/Microsoft check that you actually own that e-mail account before activating it?!

you can report that account to [email protected], then request to unlink your email from that unrecognized account.  Skype doesn't indeed have email verification procedures so anyone can register an account using emails owned by others or even fictional ones.

  • Mail Services New email with selection doesn't work, leads to Force Quit

I've posted this before, but got no replies so I'm trying again since it's driving me crazy. It was a problem under Mavericks and still exists under Yosemite's Mail.
When I select text and then go to the Services menu and pick "New email with selection," much of the time a totally empty new email message window opens , won't let me type in it at all, nor will it close or send. It just sits there until I Force Quit Mail.
    HELP PLEASE!!!

Standard Apple Mail. I'm running Yosemite 10.10.1, and I'm amazed to see that About Mail says it's Mail Version 8.1 (1993), copyright 1995-2014 Apple Inc.
Interesting thought, do you think that it doesn't like to work with itself?  Actually, I'm fairly sure I've had the problem inside of other apps but I should document that.  I'll keep notes to see where this happens.

  • Mail Service With Internal vs External Domain Question

I have a SLS setup with a private domain ex: server.acmewidgets.private
    The local dns resolves correctly
I have a static IP for this server and I would like it to handle the email for my domain which is ex: acmewidgets.com
(Currently acmewidgets.com has been having it's website and email handled by an external source)
Do I need to reinstall the SLS with the domain server.acmewidgets.com to get the email working correctly? Or do I simply just point the MX Records to the static IP of server.acmewidgets.private?
If I do not need to reinstall, what needs to be done to create the flow of email in and out of the SLS?

No need to re-install Snow Leopard Server, you will need however to configure a few things.
First up you will need to configure the Mail service to accept mail for this external domain as at the moment it will be configured to only accept mail for your local domain.
In *Server Admin*, go to the Mail section and click on Advanced, now click on Hosting. In the hosting section you can add as many domains as you like for the mail server to accept mail for, the simplest way is to add the domains as virtual hosts.
Point your external MX records to the address for the server so that mail will be directed to your server. If your server is on a fixed external IP address then all done.
If your server is behind a firewall and on a private IP address you will need to forward port 25 on your firewall to the Snow Leopard Server. If you are also running DNS you should create a new Zone for your external domain with MX records that point to your Snow Leopard Server as clients will need to know that your server is the final delivery destination for that domain. If your server really is on a live fixed external IP address this step is not necessary.
