New Tiger 10.4.3 install problems on G3
I have been a windows person up to now (sorry). I bought an old Blue & White G3 from a salvage store because I wanted to learn to use a Mac. No disks or manuals, and I didn't need any of the software on the machine. PowerMac G3 Series Model 1.1, w/ PowerPC 750 processor and 768 meg ram (I installed an extra 512) and Firewire built in.
I bought a retail copy of Tiger 10.4.3 and installed it. I then screwed it up playing around with its settings. I reinstalled it. I then screwed it up again attempting to install a 3rd party processor (PowerLogix) and reinstalling Tiger with it (not realizing Tiger doesn't like this). I stopped messing with it.
I'm now trying to get back into it. I put the old processor back in. I've tried to install Tiger a couple of times; the last one erasing and installing new. It gets to 52-53% installed as far as writing files is concerned and then times out and says install failed or tells me to restart, which basically starts me over. I've retried in each case with no luck.
On looking at the error log and trying to repair the disk, the verify tells me that "keys are out of order" and "the volume needs to be repaired". When I attempt to repair, I get a message about "rebuilding the catalog B-Tree", the repair fails, and I get a "missing thread rec id=105" message, and then a "invalid extent entry, volume check failed" and finally something about something equaling 32658745236145 (a big number) when it should equal 0.
I've tried this 5-6 times now and I'm at the end of what little knowledge I have about Mac's. I've not pulled the extra ram yet, but that's next.
Any other suggestions?

Update:
Pulling the new memory chips helped.
This time the install got to installing the "Additional Essentials" before blowing up. There was a BomFilerror 5: I/O Error and I received a "Re-Start the System" message.
I re-started again, ran First Aid on the disk, Verification gave me an "Invalid Volume Free Block Count" message and the Repair worked.
It's now installing again, and has gotten as far as installing the various Languages.
Do I have to start from scratch each time it blows up (if it blows up again)?
Does this sound like a potential bad memory issue?

New Canon Pixma MG2220 printer - install problems on Windows XP
I bought a new Pixma MG2220 printer and received it 2 days ago. I followed the instructions and installed it from the provided CD on my 10 year old Compaq S4020WM desktop computer upgraded with 1GB RAM and 1TB hard drive running Windows XP SP3.
The CD installation took a very long time to complete (maybe an hour or so) and things did not work right. In particular the My Image Garden software was very slow and sluggish to respond. So I downloaded and installed the latest drivers and software from the Canon website on top of the existing installation, which did not help. The My Image Garden software began crashing completely with an error message about a bad .dll file. After talking to Canon tech support on the telephone, the support tech admitted that this software CD was probably not compatible with my old XP computer. The My Image Garden software uses like 500MB RAM which is too much resources for my machine. So the rep had me uninstall My Image Garden.
At that point I decided to uninstall everything and start over from scratch because something was obviously not right. For example, the Canon MP drivers were using 755 MB RAM, which seemed much too large. Obviously things had not installed properly from the setup CD, in general. The date on the setup CD was 2011, so apparently it was 2 years old, and long out of date!?
So I uninstalled everything except the Canon registration and onscreen user manual. I also kept Windows Adobe RGB 1998 because I didn't see any way to uninstall it. I also uninstalled .NET 4 which the setup CD had said was necessary, as well as Microsoft XPS EP which My Image Garden had also told me was needed. Then I cleaned up my computer as well as possible with help of Revouninstaller and Ccleaner, which was necessary because things were very messy with many uninstalled remnants and incorrect registry entries. I feel lucky to have survived those tasks without having to reinstall my op system. It wasn't easy.
Then I installed the following 2 modules (only) downloaded from the Canon website:

This file allows you to easily change the settings such as the paper source settings and provides you with information on how to solve problems such as ink smudging.
I believe that's everything required to access all of the print, copy, and scan operations of this MG2220 printer. Based on my current understanding, I would classify everything else as optional. I use free Irfanview for editing and manipulation of images, which seems a satisfactory substitute for the other software.
I did not reinstall .NET 4 or Microsoft XPS EP, because apparently they're only required if you install the My Image Garden and/or Quick Menu modules. I also did not reinstall the Easy-WebPrint EX module which apparently only applies to printing with the Internet Explorer browser, while I primarily use Firefox, Chrome, or Opera browsers. And of course I did not reinstall My Image Garden nor the Quick Menu, which were so problematical originally.
On the bright side, the Canon MP drivers appeared to install correctly this time, using only 35 MB RAM (vs 755 MB previously). Also the Canon IJ Scan utility was reinstalled automatically as a part of that driver installation process. Those items have their own shortcuts. I found it useful to make one additional shortcut via Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes > "Canon MG2220 series printer", to allow easy access to all of the internal printer settings and variables. Like I said, I believe this is all that's required, in addition to some image manipulation software such as Irfanview. I deal mostly with documents and never print photos nor use cameras. Those who have large photo collections and/or cameras may need something like My Image Garden or Easy-PhotoPrint EX.
I previously used Lexmark printers for the prior 10+ years, where everything is controlled by software from the computer. I never had to use the buttons on the printer. That's obviously different with this Canon printer, which will take some getting used to.
I'm disappointed that there's apparently no way to enlarge or reduce the % copy size with this model. Is there? I also don't find any setting for lighter/darker when making copies. Is there? There are apparently no other enhancements or filters available when copying. Are there? Similarly, scanning seems remarkably unversatile with this model and I can't find any way to set a scan for ligher/darker or apply various enhancements/filters. Are there?
The printing seems OK, but I must still decide whether the very limited copy and scan options will be sufficient to my needs. I'm not sure yet. I might take it back for a refund and get something better, if I knew what was better. That's another research project. Suggestions?

I thought I was being smart to buy the MG2220 as a later model(?), but it looks like the prior model MG2120 has more copier and scanner features according to the online specs at the Canon website (see copies below).
For example the MG2120 allows 25%-400% reduction/enlargement when copying, while the MG2220 does not. Can you verify this?
Also does the MG2120 allow for setting copying to lighter/darker? (I don't understand that complicated technical lingo in the specs.)

I have tiger 10.4.11. In order for my computer to recognize my new Iphone I need to install the new iTunes, however the new iTunes will not download on my computer because it is not 10.5 or higher. Is there a way that I can upgrade from tiger to leopard? Help!!

Have purchased a new computer but can not install elements 12 since it has been installed on an older laptop. This is a one time user program, is there a code that can be put in or a small fee to pay to be able to use the program again. Never installed the video editing and hoping this can be installed with no problem.
If the laptop is still connected Launch Elements in Expert Mode. Go to the help menu and sign-out. That will deactivate usage on the laptop.

Just downloaded and installed new LR CC. No apparent problems with the D/I on my iMac, OS 10.10.3. however LR CC will not start. I get a momentary flash of the opening screen and then the program shuts down. From the posts it looks like this if a very common problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

New Mac Pro seems to have problems - what type of re install?
I have a relatively New Mac Pro (2x 2.8 ghz 8 core with 4GB ram). I upgraded from a G5 and ran the migration assistant as normal. I use a lot of programs and use it daily on a professional basis. Mostly used programs are Mail, Safari, Photoshop, Bridge, Indesign, iview media Pro, Rapidweaver, to name but a few.
I have noticed some issues, such a computer running slow, taking its time to do very simple operations. I also have Adobe software misbehaving and crashing, especially Bridge and Photoshop that often comes up saying "could not complete request because of a program error"
I thought that I would completely wipe the drive and start again, but this a lengthly process - especially when it comes to preferences, settings, mailboxes, etc etc.
The question is should I archive and install, or reinstall or indeed try anything else first?

Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the apps in this new account, if they work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the 10.5.6 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

New iMAC. TRIED TO INSTALL LEOPARD. EJECTS CD. WON'T BOOT OFF INSTALL CD
WHAT A NIGHTMARE!New iMac came today-- with antique software. Tiger installed from factory-- and way out of date. Leopard DVD included in box-- tried to install- just keeps ejecting the CD when trying to do the reboot. 2.5 hours on the phone with overseas Apple support (ha!)-- machine will not boot from install CD's (either Leopard or Tiger). Keeps ejecting the cd.
What crap. ANybody else have this problem? I bought a mac because I didn't want to fight sw issues. Boy was this a mistake.

What's the fuss about apple anyway? Shipping machines that don't have current sw loaded, won't boot from install DVDs, and then tell the customer that it will take two weeks to replace the unit-- or I can drive to an APple store (with gas at 3.25 a gallon which is an hour away) and maybe they can fix it, but not sure if the parts are available?

I would ask for a new machine with Leopard pre-installed which is what you expected to get and paid for. I can only assume it's an older machine since the new ones do come with Leopard installed.
My opinion, for what it's worth is to return it and ask for the new Leopard version. -
Please appreciate the details, so the complete situation can be visualized:
The office network:
New Mac Mini PC running Win 7Pro 64, (in boot camp), networked to an iMac running the same Win 7 Pro 64, VM, UNDER Fusion 7Pro.
To review: My treatment rooms former dell PC/running vista business/ running the server and network versions of my Dental practice mgmt & X-ray capture apps, had no probs WLAN to the front desk iMac running the same PC client dental network apps under the same vista business, & Fusion 4. The dell slowly fried its power supply .
I could not wait to replace it with a Mac mini/ boot camp/ win7 pro 64 bit, as it has to run natively to capture X-rays. The front desk iMac was also upgraded to os10.10.3/ Fusion 7pro/ and its own matching Win7 pro 64bit. The iMac is wired and WLAN connected to a netgear d600 router and a Time Warner Cable modem. The modem then failed and was replaced by an arris modem. As the Arris was configured out of the box, the network ran much slower slowed, as compared to the original modem. BUT- The Vonage 2 line phone system stopped working- no incoming or outgoing voices could be heard after it rang. Then twc remote configured it and the phone now works, but the network iMac slowed to a crawl, and now freezes when accessing the Mac Mini PC dental server to edit or enter data. The Mini perfectly accesses the internet via wifi. It accesses the front desk canon printer by wifi, and can print share they the iMac that is wired to the printer, as well, BUT, the network connection is a spinning pinwheel. The front desk imac easily finds the Mac Mini PC server on the network. It connects easily by entering the servers IPv4 address SHOULD THAT last value change. But if data isn't entered in slow motion, the window and app freezes, and has to be force quit by Task Manager!
Cause:
1. I think TWC switched the cable modem from the default- Non Bridged, to Bridged mode. Could this be the cause?
2. The network setting in fusion, on the iMac is auto detect, a setting that always worked with vista and with the new Win7 system, before TWC installed the new arris modem. 3. Switching to NAT does not work at all is there a different setting to use?
3. Does the Netgear Router have to have a port or pref configured so as not to block the Server.
4. might in need an Access Point (I have an extra netgear wdr3400) ).
5. Do I need an Extender that plugs into the AC LINE?

PS:(some addtl info:
1. File sharing works fine between the minis -Mac and boot camp sides and between the iMacs- Mac and VM sides and between eother side to or from either of the 2 computers! 2. Also either office computer and all of my my home macs , (& my iPad, & iPhone), can access each other instantly and flawlessly, with splash top streamer and jump desktop remote apps, as controller or as client! In fact, the front desk iMac can remote control the mini PC AS IF YOU WERE DIRECTLY ENTERING INFO I TO IT!
SO I think it's either a misconfiguration in the TWC cable modem &/or some additional pref to config in the router? Thanks so much for your help, (been using VM's since VPC1. & Win95 in a iMac, 1999, DV MODEL! (TWC BLAMES VONAGE FOR NOT OPENING SOME PORTS IN THE TELE MODEM. I read your description multiple times, very carefully, and I am still confused. May I suggest the following:
* Follow basic troubleshooting procedures. Isolate each individual problem. Don't try to get everything working at once. Make one change at a time.
* If I read your description correctly, the Netgear D600 (??) Router is the office LAN (not WLAN). Connect each piece on the LAN separately one-by-one, and test each piece individually. Get your LAN and its devices working first. Forget about the Vonage and the Arris Cable modem.
* Next, look at your Internet connection. Again, try each piece separately. Depending on how the original cable modem and the new Arris cable modem are configured, you may also have to adjust the configuration of the Netgear D600 Router.
* Finally, if you are still having problems, try to organize your thoughts and presentation before you post again. List each element in your network. List how each element is configured. Be systematic.
"Arris cable modem" does not help much - some are simple bridges, others are routers, etc.
To answer your questions:
1. I can't tell from your confusing description, but I don't think so. It seems like the problems are associated with the system changes you made (replacing Dell, etc.) and the problems seem to be isolated to the local LAN.
2. Auto detect should work, but it is easy to change and test, as long as you change one thing at a time.
3. No. The Netgear router should allow all communications on the local LAN. Could you have put the "server" in the DMZ?
Note: I could not find a Netgear "D600" model in a web search. Do you mean N600?
4. No. I doubt that you need an additional access point. Based on your description, everything appears to connect to the LAN.
5. No. See 4.
To repeat myself:
* Do careful, systematic troubleshooting.
* Provide carefully written, detailed description of your network and system configurations when you ask for help.

I am trying to install iphoto 09 on my new MacBook Air and the install button is grayed out. Both for installation and custom install. Is there a problem that I am not aware of?
Check for receipts
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List. -
MBP disk0s2 IO error, but some time boot fine.. new HDD doesn't solve this problem

Yesterday I get hung a computer after sleep (first time in half a year after replacing the Logic Board).
After turning off and on again, notebook can't determine internal HDD, but this disk if use USB-SATA adaptor work perfectly.
Resetting the SMC / PRAM has not solved the problem.

Nano install problems. Works on USB 1.1!
Twelve months ago I went through the getting an IPOD to install properly problems with my son's IPOD, on his all singing all dancing new PC. Only finally resolved this by installing via the firewire port rather than USB. Therefore it was with some trepidation that I recently got a Nano for my wife's birthday, but hey I thought someone like Apple would have got their act together in the interim and installing should be straight forward. Have they? NO! Tried installing the Nano on my aging Pentium III which has a USB 2.0 PCI card, and for which all other devices plugged into it worked OK. Couldn't even get Windows to properly recognise it "A problem occurred during harware install your device may not be working properly". Tried Apple's suggestions and other users suggestions all to no avail. Firewire install option is not a possibility with Nano, but finally thought why not try one of the USB 1.1 ports on my aging computer, and guess what it installed first time and works without any problems. Transfer rate is not to bad either 850 songs in 1hr 10min. The only slightly different thing I did (which some other users also say) is not to re-boot the computer at the end of installation when it prompts you to and start using Itunes straight away and do some downloading then re-boot later.
Not much comfort to users with newer PC's but if you have an older computer with a USB 1.1 port and have install problems, try it as it may work for you as well.
Like every one else with install problems on PC's I say "come on Apple" individually or together with Microsoft please get this sorted out. My view of Apple was that they have great products (still true) that are easy to use (still true) and install without problems (patently not true).
Pentium III 800 Windows XPGosh, I have tried this many times. Over several days. I have also reset the shuffle, which as far as I can tell, consists of turning it on and then off.
Last night, it started updating the music via the keyboard USB 1.1, which I know takes forever. Then it lost communications and quit. -
New hard drive and photoshop license problem
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 1.5 Ghz Pentium processor, 2 GB of RAM, and Win Xp/Pro SP3.
The hard drive in this computer failed, and it has been replaced. I used an image backup from Acronis True Image 10 to "restore" the new disk.
Now, when I try to open Phostoshop CS2, I receive a message that the license is no longer valid (I have been using this version of Photoshop for a long time).
I don't have this problem with InDesign CS3 (v. 5.0.2), FrameMaker 7.2b144, or Acrobat 8.1.6.
I didn't find any helpful info on the "Product Activation" web page.
I tried a forum search and a search of Adobe.com using the search criteria "new hard drive and photoshop license problem."
The only relevant item I could find is this:
"Backup and restoration of your system using standard tools do not require reactivation. While reactivation after backing up or restoring the system was required in early versions of Adobe software (such as Adobe Photoshop® CS), Adobe has continued to improve the activation process with new technology that eliminates the need to reactivate after system restoration. In complex situations where the system is being upgraded, we recommend deactivating the Adobe software before commencing the system upgrade. Once the system upgrade is completed, the subsequent install/restore will require reactivation, which is typically accomplished without difficulty and is completely transparent to the user."
So does that mean I have to "reactivate" Photoshop CS2? If so, do I use the Activation window that is displayed when I open Photoshop? The serial number has 20 characters. Will the Adobe (re)activation recognize this old serial number? If not, what do I have to do to get this product usable again?

I have made image files and loaded those files to a new hard drive (I use drive swap hardware to make a backup and create a new drive every time I install or uninstall major software) and have never had any program complain about needing activation
But, since the program I use is Linux on a bootable CD, it copies EVERYTHING on a hard drive, even the hidden registration areas as far as I can tell, so when I do a restore to a new drive, everything is put on the new drive -
Purchased Logic Studio a couple weeks ago. The first set I recieved would not install correctly and it errored out several times regardless of how I went about installing it. Contacted Apple Support and they indicated I may have a bad set of disks so I returned my set and recieved a new set yesterday. Install problems continue but now different. Orginal set woudl load a coiuple of disks then error out. This set will laod the install disk then when asked to insert the Audio Content 1 disk the computer will spin th edisk around a few times the spit it out. Tried several times and even tried inserting other content disks. I've read some of the conent here and some mention a possibel bad DVD Drive but I do no think my DVD Drive is the problem since after trying the Logic Studio set I successfully installed FrameForge.
When I attempted to install the first set of disks last week I was able to select all the options, SoundTrack Pro, Mainstage, etc. On this set my SoundTrack Pro option is grayed out and I cannot select it to load. I read here last week, when the first set would not load, to remove everything associated with Logic Studio and try again, which I did. Is it possible there are remneants remaining somewhere on my system that is disallowing the SoundTrack install this time?

This evening I will call Apple Support again, but any advice from the audience is much appreciated.
Signed: Frustrated but DeterminedPurchased Logic Studio a couple weeks ago. The first set I recieved would not install correctly and it errored out several times regardless of how I went about installing it. Contacted Apple Support and they indicated I may have a bad set of disks so I returned my set and recieved a new set yesterday. Install problems continue but now different. Orginal set woudl load a coiuple of disks then error out. This set will laod the install disk then when asked to insert the Audio Content 1 disk the computer will spin th edisk around a few times the spit it out. Tried several times and even tried inserting other content disks. I've read some of the conent here and some mention a possibel bad DVD Drive but I do no think my DVD Drive is the problem since after trying the Logic Studio set I successfully installed FrameForge.
When I attempted to install the first set of disks last week I was able to select all the options, SoundTrack Pro, Mainstage, etc. On this set my SoundTrack Pro option is grayed out and I cannot select it to load. I read here last week, when the first set would not load, to remove everything associated with Logic Studio and try again, which I did. Is it possible there are remneants remaining somewhere on my system that is disallowing the SoundTrack install this time?

I have the same problem. I uninstalled the old one because it will not work and now the new one does not either.
Keep getting this picture
Nothing on it works to install itunes and there is no support on the apple site.
