New to everything: Macbook Pro, Logic 9. Any patient, smart people to help?

Hello world
I finally bit the bullet, bought the computer and the software, and want to make my music permanent (I will be hoping to record using both organic instruments and vst's). But....I really have no idea where to begin. I know all of these unconnected things about set-ups and music recording, but can;t seem to bring it together.
So I have some questions, and I need someone who is patient, intelligent, and can break it down into newbie terms for this sort of thing. I'm hoping thats where you come in.
1. What do I need to get started? I know I need a Firewire interface, but I'm not sure why. How is this different than a mic preamp? Are they interchangeable?
I have heard I should use external drives for sample (ex. Komplete), but don't know how. I just read that some people have loaded Logic 9 on an external drive, but I don;t know why or how. I don;t want to screw it up. The shipment comes tomorrow.
2. What sort of other "before I load anything" things should I know? Again, I want to get it right before I put anything on the computer. For example, is boot camp something I want to consider right at the start, or can that wait? I have a copy of Windows 7 from my other computer that I can use.
3. Back to the drive question. I got the 17" because of the express card slot and I figured that I would be able to expand for whatever I need, but again, I really don;t know what it is that i MIGHT need. I have read but don;t understand about eSATA drives.
4. The last thing to consider is that I want this to be a performance mobile rig, too. In other words, I want to (hopefully) use Mainstage to play my guitar and keyboard through the MBP. This being said, I am worried that if I use all of these other drives, then it's going to be a jumble of wires and daisy chains that makes me anxious to think about in a live, "setting-up" situation.
I'll stop there, because it continues on. Please know that I have spent the better part of the past year reading forums and trying to figure this out, but again, it's all kind of in the ether, floating around, not making cohesive sense. I'm just exited to have finally gotten the **** computer.
It;s only up from here. Thanks in advance.

We're all patient and smart in here. Except ErikSimon. Don't listen to a word he says But seriously...
First up, don't worry. You have a good machine arriving and the technology will work. There will be a learning curve and some hurdles, but that's to be expected. On to your points:
1. An audio interface (Preferably Firewire, but USB can be OK) in it's simplest form is a way of getting high quality audio in and out of your computer (via either XLR/TRS/phono/digital etc). They are totally separate things from mic preamps BUT many interfaces (most) have mic preamps incorporated into them. But a mic preamp is a separate box otherwise, designed for powering a microphone and won't be any good to your computer on it's own. Hope that clarifies.
Always install Logic on the internal system drive. Any external drives are only for recording/storing audio or for large sample libraries (e.g. Logic Jam-packs & Komplete). They should also be as fast as possible (7,200rpm) and running via firewire (prefarbly not daisychained).
2. As mentioned, not sure why you want to install Windows. You mentioned VST's earlier... be aware Logic uses AU's instead. Before you install anything, run every single software update Apple has to offer, then 'repair disk permissions' in 'disc utilities'. Then install any drivers for interfaces etc. then Logic, but you can add interfaces later without any problems.
3. I can't advise you on this.
4. Yes you can take the rig out as a mobile setup. I do it regularly and, it can be a pain but it's perfectly normal. Under these circumstances you will want to consider reducing the setup to take out for various reasons... above all it minimizes risk of crashes etc and also it's usually not necessary to have everything running live on stage: consider backing tracks etc and running it from the internal drive.
Hope this helps to some extent.

The only way to do that is to Purchase it from the Mac App Store.

In that case... Install it on your New Mac using the Disc(s) and have all your Serial Numbers handy in case you are asked for them during the Install.
After the successful install... run Software Update to get any and all Updates... Then Restart your Mac and you should be good to go.
    PS:
Make sure your MBPr is connected to the Mains for this Long process...

My Macbook Pro always ejects any CDs, DVDs that I insert. How do I remedy this?

Before taking it for repair, try a drive cleaning disk. They are US$5-15 at most computer, electronics, and office supply stores. Slot-loading drives get dirty and the inexpensive cleaning disk is the logical step before spending a lot of mony.
Case in point: A friend has an older MacBook Pro and its optical drive had not worked in years. When he took the computer to an AASP for servicing another issue, he asked about replacing the optical drive. The Service Provider said it woul cost US$140 paarts + labor to install a new one--something my friend could not afford at the time.
I loaned my friend my drive cleaning disk and now his original drive works like it did when new.

  • MacBook Pro Flickering LED : Any Solution?

Hello! i Saw many, many users have a flickering LED display problem on the MacBook pro. I have not come across any viable answer/solution yet. is there any at all?
does anyone know that a particular firmware/software upgrade will solve it
does anyone know if its a hardware issue and needs the LED/Logic Board changed/fixed?
does anyone nowif its because of the graphics cards, and some graphics card setting or software updates will fix it?
has the flickering LED display on new MacBook Pros been fixed on anyone's machine?
I have a MacBook Pro 2.8 Ghz, 15 Inch, 10.5.7, bought a month back (i was waiting to upgrade to Snow Leopard once and for all). The LED Flickers pretty bad. Bought the machine 1 month back.
I have used macs since the LC475. Never ever have I heard of so many problems with Macs as I hear them now.

hi. I have a new 13" Macbook Pro 2.26ghz with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card and I'm starting to get a flickering screen when my computer gets really hot for long periods of time such as when gaming. I believe the problem is caused by overheating. I play warcraft III and there's no way my brand new Macbook Pro's graphics card can't handle those graphics. I also play warcraft III on my 7 year old Mac G4 (533mhz CPU with it's very old graphics card) without issues so there's no way a brand new much faster Macbook Pro can't handle those demands. Earlier NVIDIA cards had overheating issues which is another reason I think it's an NVIDIA overheating issue. I don't remember if it also happens while playing videos but I'll check. The problems don't happen much but when they do they are noticeable and not good. So far the flicker doesn't last long and maybe there's only 3 or 4 events when they happen.
If anyone else has more information about this please post here!
    Thanks

  • Why is 64 bit Windows 7 Professional running so slow on my new 2011 15" Macbook Pro?

I installed 64 bit Windows 7 Professional onto my new 2011 15" Macbook Pro and while the Mac partition runs fine, everything about the Windows partition seems to be slow.  There's hangups, random loading icons for processes that shouldn't require any work at all (even browsing through Windows Explorer will do this from time to time).  I don't undertand why this is happening, I thought running 64 bit would unleash the full power of my new Mac.  Should I just wipe it and do a clean install of Windows 7 32 bit instead?  I've never had issues/compatibility problems with installations of 32 bit Windows.

Well if you just installed it, then perhaps it's not validated yet and when it does there will be Windows Updates to increase the performance.
I'm sure you followed all the Bootcamp instructions about installing the Apple drivers and all that.
The only thing I can suggest is you reinstall it again after a few days and all the Windows Updates applied if it speeds up or not. Keep hitting it over and over. Make sure you have the free Microsoft Security Essentials installed or you'll get pwned really fast.
Also you have to remember that when Bootcamp carves out a Windows partition it's doing so at the bottom slowest part of your hard drive, the innermost sectors which are much smaller than the sectors OS X uses, therefore Windows will always be a bit slower than OS X, and there really isn't anything you can do about it unless you had a SSD.
I don't think you can install 32 bit Windows, even though it may run, it's only going to use half the registers of your 64bit processors.
Windows 7 64 bit runs fine in my virtual machine, I even get over 45 fps on Cube 2 Sauerbraten, but of course it's a rather light 3D game.
If you got the 2.0 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro, that could explain things, it's has a rather weak video card.

  • I'm new to the macbook pro

I'm new to the macbook pro and my stupidity let me attempt to personalize it before reading the user manual....I tried dragging an icon from the dock to the desktop(the same way you create a desktop shortcut with windows), it disappeared & now I can't find it again. Is there any way to retrieve it and how would I go about doing it?

Just go to your Applications folder, find the app you want in the Dock and drag it there. It creates an alias to the app.

  • HT3053 How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

You can leave it plugged in all the time if you wish.
Once your Macbook is fully charged, it stops charging.
You can see this if you click on your apple logo, about this mac, more info, system report, power.
In any event, it is also a good idea to use your Macbook under it's own power to keep the battery in optimal condition.
As much as possible, try not to fully discharge your battery.  It could do more harm than good to your Macbook.
Good luck and enjoy your macbook

  • New user of Macbook Pro...

I am new user of Macbook Pro... It was inherited by a cousin who is now away in another country. I am having a tough time here...
    1. How to determine the model & OS?
    2. No sound - when i click 'system preferences' and go to sound, it shows 'selected device has no output control'
    3. How can i maximize the screen?
    4. Is there any commands for 'cut & paste'?
    5. I don't see any CD drive....how does this work?
    6. Any commands to drag, without a mouse?
    7. Is there any website where i can get a free tutorial?
    Can some1 help me?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    1. How to determine the model & OS?
Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info and look at the System info.
It will tell you the model ID#, and serial number.
The serial number has only three important characters, labelled A,B,C below:
    xxABCxxxx
These are the last digit of the year, and the week of the year it was built.
    Model ID# guide is here:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_capability/mac-specs-by-machine-model-machine -id.html
    2. No sound - when i click 'system preferences' and go to sound, it shows 'selected device has no output control'
Sometimes this can be fixed one of three methods:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300832
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If none of the above works, you may have a hardware malfunction in your sound port. Note, if you have something connected to your audio port, it only play out through one output at a time. It does support stereo and 5.1 audio with the appropriate cables.
    3. How can i maximize the screen?
    This can mean two things:
    - You want to maximize the real estate where all the windows belong. This is done by increasing the resolution on Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays.
    - If you mean just enlarge windows, use the green button in the upper left to resize the window so it fits on the screen. Then the bottom right hand corner is used to resize the widnow in question.
    4. Is there any commands for 'cut & paste'?
Edit menu has those commands. To the right of any command where a cloverleaf icon is represented, the Command key or Apple logo key is used in conjunction with the said key to issue the command.
    5. I don't see any CD drive....how does this work?
The CD drive is normally below the wristpad on the right side. It is slot loading like that found in some automobile CD players. It supports DVD and CD burning and playback, be careful about the media used:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2446?viewlocale=en_US
    6. Any commands to drag, without a mouse?
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Trackpad let you control how you tap two fingers on the trackpad simultaneously to drag.
    7. Is there any website where i can get a free tutorial?
Select the Happy face on the translucent toolbar. You now will have a menu called Finder at the top of the screen. Use the Help menu to search topics.
Or post to the relevant OS page, and someone will gladly help you on this board.

  • My brand new 13" MacBook Pro is taking FOREVER to start up - Please help!

Hi, I'm the proud owner of a new aluminium 13" MacBook Pro. It is running perfectly and I'm very happy with it.
My issue is that when I start the machine after shutdown it is taking 2-3 minutes to load up the desktop, usually showing a blue screen and the mouse pointer the entire time.
I turned off automatic login in and when I did, the password and username screen came on in good time, so it is something about my account that is slowing it down.
I've run Onyx, reset the PRAM and followed all sorts of tips from this forum, but nothing has worked.
    Please help if you can!

Well we have made plenty of suggestions with in this thread and it appears as if you know your way around a computer, so I see a few options in your near future.
1st option - Your computer is under a 14 day return policy, so you can take it back and exchange if you'd like, but they may charge a restocking fee. This is an extreme option for this problem.
2nd option - Call Apple Care, you get free support off the bat and if you have not purchased the 3 year Apple Care I would highly recommend that. Call them and they "WILL" help you fix the problem. Best option!
3rd option - Everyone should have a bootable system backup (and I do not mean Time Machine). So if I may suggest that you purchase a good external firewire or USB drive that you can load OSX on and boot externally. This will help you in troubleshooting now and in the future. After you get the problem resolved you can get SuperDuper (free) and create a total bootable backup up of your system.
4th option - Don't shutdown the Mac! This may sound funny but you really never have any reason to shutdown a Mac. The only time I shutdown any of my Macs is after a software update reboot is required and I may shutdown, If I am having issues with a Mac I may shutdown and restart (maybe three times in 7 years), and lastly if you are traveling and will be away from AC power for a good length of time then you may wish to shutdown. Other than that just shut the lid!!!

lost my application dvd that came with macbook pro, early 2011. any alternatives to get the applications in that??

I'm not sure how this is an iTunes issue, but anyway, other than buying the apps from the Mac App Store (note that iDVD and iWeb are not available via the App Store), the only alternative is to call Apple support and give them the serial number of your Mac. They can usually sell you a new disk set for a reasonable fee.

What you can do is to extract the hard drive from your old computer, put it in an enclosure and connect it to your newer computer, so you can restore your data.
It's not too difficult to do it yourself, but if you think you will do something wrong, take it to a store where you can get your data restored
