New user looking for advice

Hello i am just setting up my new iphone and trying to get it connected as my nokia was with my macboook, but having a few problems that i hoped someone could assist me with.
is there anywhere i can save some text files or word documents like a filing cabinet option?
i use entourage, which seems to link itself to i cal, i have been able to sync contacts via itunes but not had any luck synching the calenadr options.
also i had my nokia synching via isync, can the iphone be synched using this? via bluetooth? or does it always need to be cabled?
if any one can help with the above i would be much appreciated?
thank you

Not really. It can sync with notes but it does not have the ability to store word docs or text files.

You need to get Entourage syncing with iCal first. Then you calendars will sync with the iPhone

Unless you are using an OTA solution like Mobile Me, MS Exchange or Google Sync, yes - you have to use the cable every time. Even with an OTA solution, you have to use the cable for transferring music/vids/pictures.

  • Powerbook Titanium user looking for advice on MacBook Pro

    Hello, all,
    After almost 10 years of faithful service, I'm afraid that my 15" TiBook is showing signs of age and may soon need replacing. For financial reasons, I can't spring for a brand-new, top-of-the-line MBP, and I was wondering if you had any advice about what I should look for in a reconditioned model from the AppleStore. Aside from basic functions like emails and web, I'd be using it primarily for the Adobe Creative Suite (no animation or any really heavy stuff) and for watching DVDs when away from home. How do you feel about the glossy screens, for example? On the French AppleStore, there are a couple of MBPs from early 2011, but I'd seen that there were concerns with the temperature/fan noises… I realize that almost anything I may buy now will be light years faster and more powerful than the 667 Mhz that I have now, but I'd like for the replacement machine to be as impervious to ageing as the PB has been.
    Any and all advice would be most welcome.
    Thanks for reading.

    My suggestion since you prefer to maximize your computers lifespan is to get either the new:
    1: High res, anti-glare 15" 2.2 Ghz or above
    2: High res, anti-glare 17" 2.2 Ghz or above.
    (The 13" MacBook Pro is integrated graphics, the 15" 2.0 has a dedicated graphics card that is as weak as the integrated graphics. Both are very poor choices for the long term.)
    The two models I've mentioned have the top of the line i7 Quad cores that simply blow the dual cores away in every way possible. The 1GB Radeon 6750M GPU is a monster video card that will satisfy ANY need you have for a long time.
    If your trying to save money and going for a used dual core i5, your doing yourself a great disservice because those machines are soon destined for the scrap heap.
    I opted for the anti-glare because with a laptop it's a necessity unless you live in a basement or a cave.
    The glossy forces you to seek dark locations to see the screen because it reflects dam near everything, even your face.
    Some people say to get a aftermarket anti-glare film, but those are expensive, they dry out, peal and bubble, not very nice looking and need occassional replacement.
    You will not give a flying ratts *ss four days later if you don't have a snazzy black bezel, your going to want to use the machine as intended in nearly any location. The matching case bezel is just wonderful and the new anti-glare (not ugly matte like before) screen is of a higher quality, looks fantastic being able to see every inch of the screen all the time.
    You can do a Google image search for "Mac glossy anti-glare" and get hundreds of pictures for your decision making process.
    The new machines are easily opened up to add more RAM or switch out the hard drive with a 00 micro-phillips screwdriver and a plastic compartmentalized holder to place the screws in order so the right ones go into the right holes. Won't void your warranty as long as you don't do any damage. Don't strip the screws.
    Do get AppleCare and a good case, even a MacTruck.
    Use the keyboard and trackpad as little as possible, use a wired or wireless instead to keep the wear off the machine.
    Keep the keyboard area covered and away from food/liquids, it gets behind the keys easily and will fry it.
    If you use the keyboard and trackpad, take off any jewelry and use a pad protector as you'll wear the case and 3 years from now it will look ugly as sin.
    Snow Leopard is a great OS, Apple plans on major changes in the next one to make OS X look like a iPad, you might not like it. The grumbling has already started.
    So get a Snow Leopard machine now with the iLife on the installer disks while you have a chance, a few weeks from now you might not have that option as all new machines will be forced into Lion.

    Unfortunately, Safari cannot be updated past 5.1.10 on a Mac running v10.6.8.
    So, the options are to upgrade to a newer OS X or use Firefox or  Chrome.
    Be aware, Apple no longer support Snow Leopard v10.6 >  www.ibtimes.com/apple-kills-snow-leopard-os-x-106-no-longer-receives-security-u pdates-1558393

    If so, you can download and install Mavericks for free from the App Store.

    As Bob says, any iMap service can do this. GMail can, iCLoud mail can too.
    Both of these can be used with Mail on any device.

  • New at this and looking for advice

    Hi, I am new at Qmasnter and looking for advice. Myself and a few of my other co-workers have been using FCP2 and we have been tossing around the idea of making a Cluster with our computers on our campus. Two of us run on MacBook Pro's, and the other on a 24" iMac, there is also 2 MacPro's and another 24" iMac we would like to toss into the cluster. I know it seems backwards, the ones that are doing all the editing are on the slower machines, but our organization operates backwards and not logically anyways. The question is what happen to the cluster when a node is turned off? Should the laptops be a node in the cluster? All the computers are running on a gigabyte network, so the network can handle it. Just looking for peoples wisdom before I cause my own headache, and learn for others mistakes.
    Thanks

    Hi Jon,
    I've also started investigating the qmaster.
    I'm following this guide you posted on digitalrebellion :
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/usingcompressor_with_multiplecores.html
    but I the 'options for selected service' is greyed out when I click on compressor.
    I can selected the 'options for...' when I click on rendering, but it just allows me to add another computer (but my only choice is 'this computer'. I see the option for SSH, but if i'm logged into another computer, shouldn't I be able to see it in the list?
    Sorry for the noob questions. I"m trying to figure it out.
    I have the following at my disposal:

  • Syncing iPod to new user account-need advice

    Hey All! I set up a new user account for my friend on my imac, so he will want to sync his iPod Touch to iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, etc. in his new user account. I know there are plenty of freeware and shareware apps to get his music from the iPod into iTunes, but need advice concerning everything else oh his iPod.
    I know I'll first get that pop up window that says his iPod is synced to another computer, and that I use "cancel" rather than "sync and erase". After doing that, I guess I use one of the shareware apps to get the music transferred over.
    Now, after that, if I do a regular sync, will iTunes transfer his apps that are on the iPod?
    Do I need to open iPhoto and download the photos on his iPod into iPhotot before doing a sync?
    What about text messages? Will they remain in tact?
    I don't think he uses the calendar on his iPod so no worries there....
    What about Playlists that he has on the iPod? Will just the music transfer with the shareware apps or playlists also?
    Will Notes be saved?
    Thanks for your help. Don't wanna screw up his iPod by setting up this user account for him.

    Apps are tied to the ID I assume the new account is just on the iMac and not a new iTunes account?
    Yes, you can import photos into iPhoto the same as you would off any camera.
    You would need to transfer purchased content (like apps). You can't do that via sync as it's a new computer and all content will be erased as you are aware.

  • Passing cursor record values to procedures - looking for advice

    I frequently use cursors in my programs and need to pass the values from said cursor around in the program to other procedures/functions.  I am looking for advice on the best or recommended way of doing this.
    Currently the majority of my programs do something like this:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY some_pkg AS
         CURSOR some_cursor IS
              SELECT t.col1,
                               t.col2,
                              t.col3,
                   FROM some_table t;
    PROCEDURE sub_proc
         (p_cursor               IN      some_cursor%ROWTYPE)
    IS
    BEGIN
         dbms_output.put_line(p_cursor.col1);
    END sub_proc;
    PROCEDURE main_process
    IS
         l_cursor          some_cursor%ROWTYPE;
    BEGIN
         FOR l_cursor IN some_cursor LOOP
              sub_proc(l_cursor);
         END LOOP;
    END main_process;
    END some_pkg;
    Basically I create the cursor as global so I can use it's %ROWTYPE as a parameter datatype in my procedures.
    I understand there are other options such as using a defined record type, or ref cursors, but I'm not totally clear on how ref cursors would help me, I don't really understand them well.
    Can anyone provide some feedback on how I currently handle this situation vs. the alternatives?
    Thanks

    I am not sure what you need to do.
    You can base records on cursors or tables using the %ROWTYPE operator.
    Cursors can be defined in the package header and used elsewhere by using normal cursor functionality (untesed)
    create or replace package my_package as
      cursor my_cursor is
        select *
          from dual;
      my_procedure;
    end my_package;
    create or replace package body my_package as
      procedure my_procedure is
      my_record my_package.my_cursor%rowtype;
      begin
        for r in my_package.my_cursor loop
          my_record := r;
        end;
      end my_procedure;
    end my_package;
      This can allow you to define the cursor in one place and reference it elsewhere.
    Reference cursors are pointers to result sets.  They reference actual datasets and can be passed between routines if defined in package headers.  There is a little more overhead using reference cursors but they support dynamic sql if needed (it usually isn't). and you MUST carefully coordinate FETCH commands to receive the values the cursor is selecting (this is harder than it looks)(untested)
    create or replace package my_package as
      type my_refcur_type is sys_refcursor;
      my_procedure;
    end my_package;
    create or replace package body my_package as
      procedure my_procedure(p_refcur out my_package.my_refcur_type) is
      begin
        open p_refcur for 'select * from dual';
    end my_package;
    --elsewhere
    my_package.my_procedure(my_cursor);
    fetch my_cursor into v_dummy;
    Hope this helps

  • New Mac user looking for help with Finder, Preview, Keyboard, & Dock

    So about a month ago I switched over from a lifelong Windows user to a brand new MacBook Pro, and while I am adjusting pretty well, there are still some things that I haven't quite figured out.
    First up on the list is Finder! I like my files to be arranged just like how they are in Windows Explorer--folders first alphabetically, then files alphabetically. I've managed to acquire this setting by messing around with the "clean up by" and "arrange by" functions but I don't really know the specific combination. Most of the time these preferences are saved and set as the defaults under "View Options" but every once in a while it resets and I have to tinker around with the settings all over again. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? It's only happened twice so far, but I'd rather not have it happen again. Also, occasionally when I delete an item, there is a blank space left where the icon was instead of all the files following it bumping up a space. Any quick fixes for this bug?
    Next up is Preview. Again, I like the Windows Way and I like to be able to browse between the files in a folder while using Preview/Windows Photo Viewer. I know that there is a way to browse between files if you select the whole folder and stick it in Preview, but is there a way to achieve the same result without having to do that? An app or "extension" of some sort that adds arrows in to browse between photos? I've had no luck finding anything other than the aforementioned option. Is there a good free alternative to Preview that will function similarly with the browse between photos option?
    One of my favorite things about my new Mac is the backlit keyboard function. My old laptop didn't have it and as someone who is online more often at night it is super helpful. But is there a way to turn it off during the day/in bright settings? A way to put it on a timer? In System Preferences I selected the option "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light", which I assumed to mean would have the keyboard NOT very bright when there IS light, but it continues to light up just the same. Any apps or extensions to help with this one?
    And finally, the dock! This question is more about aesthetics than functionality but help is appreciated all the same. Currently, my dock looks like this: http://i42.tinypic.com/35ktxlz.png It is rather opaque and the indicator lights can barely be seen. However, in a lot of tutorial videos I've been watching, many people have docks that look like this: http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2011/07/19/Lion_LaunchPad.png It is a darker shade of gray, the divider is dashed rather than a straight line, and the indicator lights are clearly visible. Does anybody know how to get this look for the dock? I've looked in the dock preferences but there's not really anything in there other than magnification/size/effects.
    That about sums things up! I'm sorry if any of these seem like "silly" questions but they are all things I have been unable to find answers for. Any and all tips, tricks, and help is appreciated! Thanks in advance for all your help!!

    congratulations on coming over from the dark side.
    Seems like you are interested in column view, which would show you the hierarchy of folders and files:  Column View in Mac OS X Mountain Lion - For Dummies Not sure what's going on if your finder settings don't stay put. May be a corrupted preferences file, which is easy to fix, but is perhaps a topic for another discussion.
    What I'd suggest is to have an open mind and try to see what the mac can do, rather than force it to look like your windows machine. I mean, if you just want it to look like windows, then why bother switching? If you give it a little time, you'll start to appreciate the mac way of doing things, and see how it is infinitely more awesome, powerful, creative, intuitive, and better designed (and the software way better written)  than what you left behind. But that's your call.
    There are some threads on this forum with complaints about the backlight. Keyboard backlight settings query...: Apple Support Communities  Evidently it depends on the angle of the screen and the light sensor relative to the light. Some suggest that a SMC reset may help: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)  This is not an issue for me, I just adjust the brightness with the keyboard buttons if I want. Real men shift their own gears, drink their coffee black, and adjust their own keyboard brightness. I am not aware of any software to exert more control over this feature but a search of macupdate  Download Apple Mac Software & iPhone Software : MacUpdate may help. I mean, it's up to you what is important. I can waste a lot of time playing around with the GUI and with unnecessary software, or I can just get my work (and play) done.
    You might prefer the no-glass dock, that removes the shelf, and makes the indicator lights like more discrete orbs. You can do this with the terminal. Using the terminal is also, perhaps, a topic for another discussion.I like the 2D dock much better. If you want I'll give you some directions for how to do it. Otherwise, here's a reference: 2D Dock - MacRumors Forums

  • New to photoshop, looking for advice on creating a stencil design, can anyone explain how to do this

    Heya,
    So I'm hoping to get back into photoshop, my knowledge at the moment is pritty minimal, but i'm going to start learning how to use it again.
    I'm new to this forum and don't intend to come on here often for advice but i hope that someone would be kind enough to point me in the direction that i'm looking for, i would be very grateful.
    Firstly, i haven't yet decided which adobe photoshop product is best suited for what i'm looking for and i aim to go and explore the trials first to find out.
    I'm looking to create designs with software that doesn't really have any limits in terms of creating designs.
    I was wondering if someone could give me some links to a tutorial or something that explains how to create the stencilling effect in the image that is seen as a tree with a cityscape in the background, and possibly the other effects seen on the t-shirt. I know it might be a lot to ask but it would really mean a lot if someone could explain how you create effects like this.
    Here's the image:http://www.gifts.com/products/Kohls/Mudd-Tree-Tee?p=6886:1945256129:35
    I know that the image is small, it was the best i could currently find, i hope that you can still see it well enough.
    Thank you in advance
    I really appreciate it!!

    First you may want to google »photoshop tutorial distresssed«.
    As for combining images like that a combination of Blend If-settings (one can split the handles by alt-click-dragging them)), Layer Groups set to Blend Modes other than Pass Through and Grtadient Maps may be employed to maintain high editability.
    One could also just use the images as Layer Masks for Solid Color Layers (and use Levels or Curves to get the intended contrast), though.

  • New System Build For Premiere 5.5 Looking For Advice

    Hi there, this is my first time on here and it looks like this is the best place for advice.
    So I've been tasked to build a new computer for a client for Premiere 5.5. He's running a very basic studio setup and his main complaint is how it takes
    such a long time to render video. He told me it takes him about 6 hours to render a 40 minute sequence to MPEG2 standard(this is what he mostly renders as). I did some playing around and it turns out that his current system is relatively good but it uses a HD 6990 as its GPU(which can't even take advantage of Premier's hardware rendering capability!)
    Now initially I was going to go the all SSD route with a a budget of about $2500 or so. However, after doing some reading on here, I've decided that this
    isn't necessarily the best way. So I will only run the OS of an SSD. Here is what I have so far:
    PROCESSOR:
    Intel Core i7-2600K Quad-Core Socket LGA1155, 3.40Ghz, 8MB L3 Cache
    (I will overclock this as much as possilbe with the Noctua cooler)
    MOTHERBOARD:
    Asus P8Z68-V Pro Socket 1155 Intel Z68 Chipset
    RAM:
    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series DDR3 1600MHz (PC3-12800) 16GB (4x4GB) Dual Channel Kit
    VIDEO CARD:
    EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD Superclocked 1280MB GDDR5 (012-P3-1573-AR) nVidia GeForce GTX 570Chipset(797MHz) 1280MB GDDR5 Memory(3900MHz)
    POWER SUPPLY:
    OCZ ZX Series 1000W Fully Modular 80 Plus Gold Certified Power Supply (OCZ-ZX1000W)
    HARD DRIVES:
    OCZ Vertex 2 SATA II 2.5" 120GB Solid State Drive (OPERATING SYSTEM DISK)
    Western Digital VelociRaptor (WD3000HLFS) 300GB SATA II 10000RPM 16MB x2 (Project Disk Run in RAID 0)
    Western Digital VelociRaptor (WD3000HLFS) 300GB SATA II 10000RPM 16MB x2 (Output Disk Run in RAID 0)
    CPU COOLER:
    Noctua NH-D14 Six Heatpipe Dual Radiator CPU Cooler
    OPTICAL DRIVE:
    ASUS DRW-24B1ST Black SATA
    Now if there are any suggestions, PLEASE let me know how I can improve this build. I really don't want to disappoint the guy, especially if he isn't going to get a great performance boost in terms of rendering time. Considering he can't use GPU acceleartion right now on his $600+ card, I would imagine this should be a better build.
    Also, will there be a problem if I run four hard drives in RAID 0 mode using the motherboards onboard RAID capability?

    Photomaster,
    I think you are on the right track to speed up this guys system (2600k w/ OC, dual RAID 0) and I second Harm's comment about large 7200 drives being better than the prev. generation VR 300GB drives (HLFS series).
    Be aware however that "rendering" does mean different things, and if you are thinking that MPE will increase AME rendering to MPEG2-DVD by 10x you will be very disappointed! Here is the rest of the story...
    Timeline rendering, as benchmarked in PPBM5, will indeed speed up on the order of 10x with the addition of MPE using the appropriate nVidia hardware. PPBM5 is a test carefully constructed test that represents how long it takes for Adobe Premiere Pro to prepare (render) a timeline for playback. In actual use, your results will vary. Some timelines may only be sped up by 2x (i.e. very complex and/or using non-MPE effects, filters, etc.) to more than 1,000,000x faster for the case where a non-MPE system requires rendering, whereas the MPE system can play back the timeline without ANY rendering (i.e. simple SD timelines with MPE compliant effects).
    Next, full timeline rendering and "exporting" from a Premiere Pro timeline to MPEG2-DVD format are both sped up, but more on the order of 2x. On my fast quad-core system, I'm getting about a 1.8x improvement from MPE assistance using the PPBM5 project for testing.
    Finally, using Adobe Media Encoder (AME), and I can only speak for CS5, the MPE hardware does not even come into play and does not speed things up at all. On a positive note, Harm has reported that AME ver. 5.5 ran just over 2x as fast as ver 5.0.3; possibly the newer version is in fact tapping the MPE hardware for this gain?
    Regards,
    Jim

  • New Ipad User looking for some good CRM suggestions for small business

    Hello All,
    I am a new (and satisfied) Apple Ipad2 user.  I am the sales rep for a small business that is in the health care field.  I am looking for a good CRM program for the following reasons and I am wanting to know if there is a particular program that can provide any of these things for me:
    Ability to put in all of my customers information.  Seperate folders for each.
    Ability to add information to customer folders/files based on recent phoen conversations or actual on-site visits.
    Ability to set a reminder of when to call back on that customer to see status of his/her patient that was fit with our product.
    Ability to allow other members of the company to check in on this information as well.
    A little background, we are a small company in the health care field.  We have 90 customers currently and we are growing at a steady pace.  I would like for my upper management to look at the CRM at any point and see what is going on with each customer.  If I sell a product to Customer A, then I would like a reminder to pop up 6 months from now when that patient will be ready for another product.  I would also like to be able to update a customer file so that management can see when I called on a customer, etc.
    I appreciate everyone's input as I have never utilized a CRM program.  I am currently using Dropbox for all of this right now, but it seems like a CRM would be more organized,
    Thank you,
    --Ryan

    HI Ryan,
    Did you find an app for CRM, one thing that I'm also curious about, you may need to find one that is HIPPA compliant.

  • New Build - Looking for Tips

    So I have purchased the components listed in my Sig and getting ready to set everything up, just wanting to get some tips/advice on the best way to go about it.
    My biggest question is concerning RAID, as this is the first time I have set one up. Any tips, guides, etc. on how best to accomplish this on my MB is appreciated. I am wanting to end up with a 1TB RAID 1+0 (4 500GB drives paired up, both pairs RAID 1, then one pair RAID 0 of the other pair). Am I correct in assuming it is best to plug only 2 in (SATA 1&2) setup the RAID 1 on those, then plug the other 2 in (SATA 3&4) and set those up as RAID 1, then tie everything together as with RAID 0? Or can I plug them all in and do it all at once? The instructions look fairly straight forward, just looking for some clarity and actual user input.
    Do I need to update my BIOS? I haven't tried booting at all, so not sure what I am starting with, but I notice in the CPU compatibility the same CPU I have lists Version 10.4. Should I stick with what I have and only upgrade if I am having issues, or should I upgrade from the start.
    I have a SATA Blu-Ray burner, and have seen a few things mentioning a SATA ODD coming up under RAID configurations. Is this an issue, is there a certain SATA port I should use to avoid this, certain settings I need to pay attention to, or does it matter?
    Regarding memory, I read (in a sticky) that fewer memory sticks result in faster performance due to Dual Channels. I was under the impression that if all 4 slots were filled you would have 2 groups, each using Dual Channel. Am I incorrect in that? If faster performance (MHz-wise) is achieved by only using 2 sticks, will I get better overall results by removing 2 sticks (leaving only 4GB) or will the additional memory compensate for the speed loss? (The RAM is rated as being Dual Channel, if that makes a difference).
    Does anyone have any general computer building tips? I have built a number of them before, but would like some input on the best/most efficient/fewest problems way is. All previous builds have been done with default configurations, if anyone has suggestions for some settings that they recommend those are welcome. I will be over-clocking at some point, depending on how things go and if there is any advantage to doing so from the start or waiting until the system is setup. I did notice this MB has a OC center as well as the Easy OC Switch. Any input or thoughts on those?
    To sum it up, I am looking for as much input on getting everything set up as easily as possible, with the best settings without requiring a lot of adjustments. Any and all input is appreciated!

    Yeah, I agree with the silliness of Windows final rating, however I do like to use the individual ratings as a sort of benchmark. The issue isn't the final rating, it the rating I am receiving for my processor, which is 4.1, and is the lowest rating on there.

    As a comparison, another computer with a 2.2GHz quad core processor, 4GB RAM, and single drive rates as follows:
    Processor - 6.9
    RAM - 7.2
    Graphics - 4.8
    Gaming - 6.1
    HD - 5.9
    With the components I have vs the comparison computer, I would expect CPU, RAM, and HD to all be higher, but they are lower or the same! So something somewhere is not right in my opinion.
    Thanks for any feedback!

  • Web Based Messageboard (JSP, XML, XSLT) - Just Looking For Advice Please!

    I have a general question - I am not looking for any code, just some advice if possible. I am studying on a Masters course and I have been given an assignment to do which I am having difficult getting started. I have worked a lot with Java up until now, however this is the first time I have had to JSP on my course.
    My current assignment is that I am required to create a simple web based message board, using JSP and XML, which allows users to post messages to the board, and also to reply to messages. The content of the message board is stored in an XML file, and there is no database involved. The message data needs to be formatted for viewing in a browser using XSL transformations.
    I am stuck as to how to go about starting the project, and this is all I am asking for advice in. I have created the basic XML file which has some preliminary data stored within it, and I have created an XSL stylesheet to transform this data, however I am stuck with the JSP. Do I need to create a seperate JSP page for each page of the website? How does this link in with the XSLT?
    I would welcome and really appreciate any advice, but I stress that I am not looking for anyone to give me any code or anything like that.
    Thanks.

    You can use XSLT to convert XML to HTML. Then include this HTML in your JSP. Further on you've a plain HTML form with an input field for a message which you submit to a servlet. In the servlet validate/convert/whatever this message and add it to the XML file and then forward/redirect the request back to the JSP.

  • Installing New Color Looks for Color 1.5 - Invalid Location?

    Hi I downloaded the New Looks for Color 1.5 that Apple provided, which are basically new boxes for the Color FX tab in Apple Color 1.5.
    In the installation instructions, it says to copy the folders into this location:  /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Color/Effects/
    The problem is, this location doesn't seem to exist.  There isn't a folder called "Library" in the Users/username folder.  When apple sent out Lion, did they change the way this path is structured or something?
    I do find a "Library" folder in the root level of my boot drive.  And it does have a folder in it called "Application Support," but there isn't a "Color" folder in it.  Does anyone have any ideas where the real location is to install these files?
    Incidentally, I did try looking in the Color FX Bin tab inside the Color FX room in Color for information.  I tried searching in finder for any of the pre-existing Looks that are listed there, but they don't come up anywhere on my system...though they are there in the application.  Perhaps the real file name is something different than is listed there?
    Thanks!

    Click on the GO menu when in the FINDER.  Between VIEW and WINDOW.  Now, while clicking on that, press and hold the OPTION key.  You will see LIBRARY APPEAR.  Choose it.

  • Task Privileges for Existing Users - Looking for a global update solution

    After some reading I understand that if you set the task privileges for the PUBLIC user in the Privileges section of Discoverer Administrator (10g), any new user created in the system will pick up the privileges you have assigned to the PUBLIC user.
    I currently have 4000+ users who have access to Discoverer Plus and the ability to create/edit queries. I want to limit who can access Discoverer Plus functionality to approximately 150 users.
    I have changed my PUBLIC user to NOT have privileges but this will only affect new users. Is there any way to restrict 4000+ users without having to go through each user individually and set the privileges.
    I am looking for a global update solution. I am wondering if this can be done through the back-end.

    Hi Mezzobella
    If you change the rights for the public user then other users, who have not been manually adjusted in any way, will automatically pick up the public rights. Therefore, if you have a lot of users that are not changing this means that at some point in their life you will have clicked OK or Apply on the screen with a user displayed. This now assigns the rights to that user as opposed to inheriting them from the public user.
    What you are describing is the perfect reason why you should not administer Discoverer using user accounts but to use roles or responsibilities instead.
    In your case you are now somewhat stuck. The programatic way to revoke these rights is to drop rows from the EUL5_ACCESS_PRIVS table but this could take longer than doing inside Discoverer. Basically, when a user has been granted privileges one row per privilege is inserted into this table. The column AP_EU_ID contains the ID of the user. The column GP_APP_ID is the one that tells you what privilege a user has. Here is a list of the privileges:
    1000 Desktop / Plus Privilege (U)
    1001 Create / Edit Query (U)
    1002 Item Drill (U)
    1003 Drill Out (U)
    1004 Grant Workbook (aka Sharing) (U)
    1005 Collect Query Statistics (U)
    1006 Admin Privilege (A)
    1007 Set Privilege (A)
    1008 Create / Edit Business Area (A)
    1009 Format Business Area (A)
    1010 Create / Edit Summaries (A)
    1011 Not used as far as can be determined
    1012 Schedule (U)
    1013 User is never required to schedule workbooks (U)
    1014 Save workbooks to database (U)
    1015 Managed scheduled workbooks (A)
    1016 This is an apps mode EUL
    1017 This is the user's assigned language
    1018 User is allowed to change password
    1019 to 1023 Not used as far as can be determined
    1024 Create Link (U)
    Note: A = Admin privilege, U = User privilege
    Theoretically you could manually delete rows from this table and that will revoke the rights. In reality, Oracle do not like it when inexperienced users manually the EUL as you could corrupt it. Therefore, any manual updates must be done with utmost caution after making sure you back up or have a copy of the table you will be updating - just in case.
    Try running this query to see the content:
    SELECT DECODE( AP_EU_ID, 104198, 'Viewer', 103697, 'Plus', 'Other' ) "Who" , AP_ID, AP_TYPE, AP_EU_ID, AP_PRIV_LEVEL, GP_APP_ID, GBA_BA_ID, GD_DOC_ID, AP_ELEMENT_STATE
    FROM EUL5_ACCESS_PRIVS
    Best wishes
    Michael
