New user - Opening a file on first login, then removing from startup items

I'm trying to write a script to open a pdf welcoming a new user on an imaged mac. I've written the script "Welcome.app" below
tell application "Preview"
open "OS X Tiger:Users:Shared:Welcome.pdf"
end tell
do shell script "rm /Users/Shared/Welcome.app"
I'm having problems with permissions this way. I've tried changing the user and group but no luck so far.
It was suggested to me to try using "defaults write loginwindow etc" to
remove the Welcome.app from the startup items, but I'm not sure if this is possible from the terminal.
Any suggestions?
Netrestore generic image   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Create a second copy of the loginwindow.plist file in the User Template's Preferences folder with the name loginwindow.original.plist, and use the following two commands after the tell block:
do shell script "mv ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist ~/.Trash/loginwindow.plist"
do shell script "mv ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.original.plist ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist"
The script will then disappear from the startup items, but will remain on the hard disk.

    No, it will wipe it when they try to connect it to a computer and set it up under their own Apple ID. When they turn on the device the first time without connecting it to anything they will be able to see the video.

  • Missing links when different users open a file

    I'll try to sum this up as best I can. All mentioned files (InDesign and linked assets) are on a server. Mac OSX 10.9.4, InDesign CC
    Some colleagues and I access the same InDesign files from time to time, what we're noticing is that when one of us opens the file all is well, however when another user opens the file all of the links are missing. If I open the file and links are missing and I relink all instances, save and close, and then another user opens the file—all the links are missing on her machine. Has anyone dealt with this before?
    Thanks,

    OH MY GOD TELL ME ABOUT IT!  It's the source of my frustration with this new job.  I come from a company where everyone knew production and best practices for sharing files over the network and this kind of thing never happened.  And here no one knows how to do anything but think they have this awesome workflow.  And no one knows how to use the software to it's fullest and make things so difficult.  There's insane file duplication on multiple share points of my server and no one is willing to change the way they work.  I've been here for 2 months and like every day i find something else that they do inefficiently and refuse to change.
    Back to the issue.  I did some troubleshooting and found that when I packaged a file locally, then copied that package to the server that's when the links break because the indd file is still pointing to the local package folder.  I'm so used to packaging to the server that i didn't think of that possibility.
    Thanks for your input!  Other than their nightmare file management, this new place is great though (not that that matters with this post...just saying)

  • Opening PDF Files in Adobe Reader XI directly from SharePoint 2013 Site

    I am trying to open PDF files in Adobe Reader XI directly from a SharePoint 2013 document library using Internet Explorer 11. When I click the file name it immediately opens the file in Adobe Reader, however it is downloading and opening the file locally
    from the Temporary Internet Files location. If I add a comment to the PDF file, and save it will perform a Save As and the location will default to the temporary folder.
    If instead of clicking the file name, I click the ellipses in SharePoint, copy the file URL, and go to Adobe Reader, click File > Open and paste the link into the file name, Adobe Reader will correctly open the file directly from the SharePoint site and
    prompt for "Open and Checkout, Open, or Cancel".
    Is there a way to get it so that when I click the file in IE, I get the same functionality as a File > Open in Adobe Reader?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
    According to your description, you want to open pdf file in the Adobe Reader directly from document library.
    I suggest you do as the followings:
    1. In SharePoint Central Administration site, click Application Management->Manage Web Applications, select the web application for the site. Click Authentication
    Providers, select default zone, and select Yes for "Enable Client Integration?".
    2. click Site Settings-> Site collection features->"Open Documents in Client Applications by Default" click Activate
    3. set the default open behavior for a document library by using the document library settings page.
    4. Enable the “Adobe Arcobat SharePoint OpenDocuments Component”add-on in the IE11.
    5. Add your current site URL to the trusted web sites in IE11.

  • Ie4unit.exe "Per-User Initialization Utility" crashing on first login of a new profile

    Hello,
    I am getting an error whenever I log onto my servers via RDP as per below:

    My server is running Internet Explorer 11. This has only started happening in the past fortnight.
    It only happens on the first login of a user where the profile is initalized. If I move on from the error and log out / back in the error does not re-occur.
    If I remove the user profile from the server so it has to recreate it the error happens again.
    Screenshot below.
    Any ideas or suggestions that might be causing this?
    My first thoughts are perhaps something under my group policy settings for IE is not compatible with IE11 and causes this issue..?

    "C:\Windows\System32\ie4uinit.exe" -UserIconConfig
    Any insight on what this switch actually does and why it would crash?
    Just from the name.  Do you have any customization in that area?
    An alternative/supplement to running ProcMon that you could use here is  DependencyWalker  for its Profiler feature.  That would give you a trace of calls up to the crash.
    ProcMon is coarser and depends on how optimized a program is that is being traced.  Hopefully ie4uinit.exe  won't be too optimized and so then could give you some good clues about what was going on using Registry and File access events.  ProcMon
    used to give us a simple way of getting a pseudo Stack Back Trace for the crashing thread but lately it seems the WER gets into the act in ways that I haven't figured out yet, so no longer as simple to analyze from there.  That's why a dump would probably
    be useful too.

  • Access denied on first login, then it lets the user in (Fedora Core 5)

    I am getting the message "Access denied by Application security check" the first time I login to the db (dba privs.) from a remote machine. Then I click the link to return to the application and log in again. This time it will let me in. Then I close the browser, open back up and it does the same thing. After doing this a few times it lets me in w/o the message until I rebooted, and then it starts the message again (I rebooted both the server and the client come to think of it). At any rate it is installed on FC5, which I am a little green on, however I did somehow manage to get this far.

    Here is a way to design for scheduler running:
    Import-Module ActiveDirectory
    $path='\\UNCLocation\devshare\*'
    $addn = (Get-ADDomain).DistuinguishedName
    $defaultLocation="OU=Homeless,$addn"
    $dnsroot = (Get-ADDomain).dnsroot
    $log = "C:\Path\To\errorlog.log"
    $enabled=$true
    function Logit($type='INFO',$msg,$p1,$p2){

    Write-Verbose $text
    $text| Out-File $log -append
    Function Create-Users{
    [CmdletBinding()]
    Param()
    Get-ChildItem $path -Include *.csv |
    ForEach-Object {
    $nu=Import-Csv $_
    $sam = $_.FirstName.substring(0,1).ToLower() + $_.LastName.ToLower()
    if(!Get-ADUser -LDAPFilter "(sAMAccountName=$sam)")
    Logit -msg 'Creating user' -p1 $sam
    $setpass = ConvertTo-SecureString -AsPlainText $_.Password -force

    Surname=$_.LastName
    DisplayName=($_.LastName + "," + $_.FirstName)
    UserPrincipalName=($sam + "@" + $dnsroot)
    OfficePhone=$_.Number
    AccountPassword=$setpass
    Enabled=$enabled
    Path=$defaultLocation
    $location = $_.Department + ".$($addn)"
    If ([adsi]::Exists("LDAP://$($location)")){
    $userprops.Path=$location
    Logit -msg "User $sam will be created inctarget OU:" -p1 $location
    }else{
    Logit -type ERROR -msg 'Target OU not found. User will be created in default'
    New-AdUser @userprops
    Logit -msg 'Created new user:' -p1 $sam
    }else{
    Logit -type ERROR -msg 'Username already exists' $sam
    Create-Users -Verbose
    The code loops through all CSVs found.  If you run it in the scheduler every 2 or 3 minutes it will be pretty fast.
    You will need to add a layer of error handling and logging to get it to work smoothly.

  • When creating a custom default user profile for an image, I get the error "A keychain cannot be found to store "safari" when a new user logs in for the first time.

    My "profile" account works flawlessly with the exception of safari. I had copied the entire user template folder to the default location in OS X 10.10 and removed the entire keychain folder. However, whenever someone logs into the computer for the first time and opens Safari, they are greeted with the error message "A keychain cannot be found to store safari".

    If you've just changed your login password in Recovery mode, follow these instructions. Otherwise, see below.
    At some point, you may have reset your keychain to default in Keychain Access. That action would have caused your login keychain to be renamed.
    Back up all data before proceeding.
    In Keychain Access, delete the login keychain from the keychain list. Choose Delete References when prompted, not Delete References & Files.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Keychains
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V), and press return. A folder will open. Rename the file "login.keychain" in that folder to something like "login-old.keychain". Rename the file "login_renamed_1.keychain" to "login.keychain". You can then close the folder.
    Back in Keychain Access, select
              File ▹ Add Keychain...
    from the menu bar. Add back the file now named "login.keychain". If any of your needed keychain items are missing from it, also add back the file you named "login-old.keychain". I suggest you transfer any needed items from that keychain to the login keychain, then delete it. The transfers are made by drag-and-drop in Keychain Access. You'll need to enter your password for each item transferred.

  • I can't open a pdf file in a browser window. I have to save it before I can open it. Why can't I open the file without first having to save it?

    Anytime that I click on a pdf file in a browser window, the file will not open automatically. I am forced to save it on my computer first and then access the file. When I click on it after it is saved locally, it opens as it should.

    If you are not able to get Adobe Acrobat Reader to open .pdf files in the browser. Even after you check in prefs to show pdf files in the browser.
    Make this modification for all versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader that show under this key.

  • New problem opening Pagemaker files with InDesign

    I have quite a lot of archive files made in Pagemaker 6 and 7 and now use InDesign CS2. Until recently I could open pagemaker files from InDesign then save them as InDesign files and away I went.
    But now I am just getting an error message saying the document is damaged and cannot be recovered. First off I thought it really was a damaged document but then realised all my old .pmds were saying the same.
    Is there a known issue maybe with a recent upgrade of InDesign or something?
    I would really love to be able to access my old pmds!!
    Thanks in anticipation.

    Yes Joel you're right - XP and recently installed SP3.
    Just pondering the best way forward.
    I'm responsible for the IT for a small charity with 8 staff members.
    I have Master Suite CS3 and use a variety of the programmes but the other staff members are only using InDesign and MS Office.
    We're not a high end design set up but producing all the sort of leaflets, posters bits and pieces that we need day to day.
    Decided to upgrade to Office 2010 and to do that I had to install SP3.
    Stuck with ID2 for everyone else (and went to great lengths to buy some extra licenses to do so) because opening an ID2 file with ID3 creates a new file which is a big nuisance and it's expensive to upgrade across the board (even with charities having access to educational licensing concessions).
    Fact of life is we do tend to have quite long-lived files and I will go on wanting to open pagemaker ones for some time to come.
    I probably only want to convert a pmd once a month I guess - it's just suddenly a huge nuisance not to be able to do those few ...
    I can't roll back to SP2 because of Office 2010.
    I could re-set one workstation wtih XP2, Office XP and InDesign CS2 purely to be able to convert pmds. Again, nuisance and ties up a licence on a little-used machine.
    I could bite the bullet and move everyone over to InDesign CS3 - will I definitely be able to open pmds from there?
    Ah, just thought - I have an ID3 licence but not loaded on my computer. If I load that and use it just for opening pmds then export them for backwards compatibility with ID2 like this http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/5.0/help.html?content=WSa285fff53dea4f86173837510 01ea8cb3f-6d4d.html will I then be a happy bunny?
    Would be glad of expert comment before I start faffing about!
    Thanks

    If anyone have an idea please help !
    Btw, i'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

  • New users created in APEX can't login to new App

    I've imported an APEX application that I created with the downloaded version of APEX (2.1.0.00.39), into apex.oracle.com. I tried to create a new user for the application. With a NULL default schema (meaning it should have access to any schema), no user I seem to create though is able to log in to the application. It says invalid credentials.
    When I create a new user, does that user go through some sort of validation process by Oracle and isn't valid until Oracle does it's magic tap on the newly created user?

    Hi Tyler,
    As you have created application users (as opposed to database users) is your application using "application authentication" or is it using "database authentication"?
    You can check which one is current on the application's "Shared Components >> Authentication Schemes" and change it if required.

  • Migration assistant created a new user when transferring files from a PC to mac

    I just bought a new macbook air and proceeded to transfer my itunes music files from my old PC to my new mac using the migration assistant.  I could not find my music files that I had transferred in itunes on my admin user account but later found them on another user acount that I had not created. I was wondering if there was a way to collapse the two user accounts into one or transfer my music from one account to the other? (I tried using an external hard drive but it would not add my music files to the itunes library). Any ideas??

    Cattus Thraex wrote:
    I agree with the idea of an enhancement request, MA should have some more options if used later, normaly users a curious to log into the fresh system, and transfer data and settings at a later date.
    Unfortunately, a "merge" option, where it would add things to an existing user account, isn't realistic.  That would work fairly well for such things as documents, where everything is in separate files (although settings and preferences would get a bit tricky).
    But not for things like iCal, AddressBook, or Mail, where there are complex structures.  Trying to merge those in any automated way would be very complex.   Even worse would be 3rd-party apps that Apple can't possibly know how to handle.
    One thing that might help would be rewording the "You can transfer information later using Migration Assistant" line at the bottom of the Setup Assistant window:
    A number of us have asked for that to be worded differently -- warning that it's much better to do it first, or not to install stuff you're going to need, or something.   All to no avail, of course.

  • A few basic questions from a new user - backups, moving files, sharing

    I'm a Mac user considering getting an iPad. I'm hoping someone can clue me in to some basic aspects of the experience:
    1) are backups easy? can you "clone" it (the way I do with my desktop and laptop) so that everything (content, settings, preferences, etc.) can be restored exactly in the event something happens to it?
    2) how does one move files to it? Specifically, PDFs - I have a ton of PDFs I plan to be reading on this thing. Does it show up as a drive (drag-and-drop) when connected to my desktop machine, or does it work through a special conduit or? Does it have a filesystem we can see?
    3) is there any notion of "users" - can multiple people share it and have their own sets of preferencs settings/content?
    4) is the iPad 2 date still best estimated as April? I need it for a trip in mid-March and I don't want to buy the 1st model if the second is coming out shortly thereafter. Is there any likelihood of having it be available in the first week of March? If not, is there a good place (on-line) to rent one for a week perhaps?
    thanks in advance!
    Mike

    1, yes they are easy, but they are not a clone. When connected to iTunes on your computer you just tell it to backup. That will backup your notes, settings, app data, but not synced data (i.e. not your music, films or contacts and calendars synced from your computer).
    2, via iTunes, not as a drive. PDFs can be dragged into iTunes and then synced to the iPad to go into the (free downloadable) iBooks app. Alternatively you can buy an app like Goodreader which allows you to transfer PDFs wirelessly from your computer (can also be used to read/store PDFs emailed as attachments).
    3, no. There is only one set of options. If you have children (or even other adults) then you can set a passcode to restrict access to, for example, Safari, iTunes, or the ability to install and delete other apps. But it's basically a single user setup.
    4, speculation as to what Apple may, or may not, be planning is prevented by the terms of use of these forums. All that can be said here is that no new version has been announced, and when/if one is it will be on the apple.com frontpage. You should ask yourself whether the current one meet most, if not all, of your requirements, not whether some unannnounced item might.

  • Two users open same file at the same time... how is this possible?

    I am the Creative Director for a magazine. All the people in my team are using Macs with Leopard and Indesign CS3. I didn't know this was possible, but it is happening to us. Two people can open the same Indesign file at the same time. When this happens, the file becomes corrupt and we can't work on it again. We don't use Version Cue. We probably should, as well as In Copy, but we just haven't had the time to learn to use them. This problem started about three months ago and we have not been able to determine how this is possibe or find any information why it is happening, or how to stop it from happening. Help! If anyone out there has any idea... we are desperate.

    My hunch would be to suspect the server - it's probably not handling file locking correctly.
    Here's what I'd image I'd try - but be aware, I am writing down stuff from memory, and I cannot guarantee the info is completely accurate - but I hope it might give you some pointers.
    - If the server is currently providing the AppleShare Filing Protocol (or whatever it is called - acronym is AFP), you could try to connect using that.
    Go to the Finder, and use the Go - Connect to Server... menu item and enter the server's IP address, prefixed with afp:// - e.g. if the server is on IP address, say '192.168.1.120'
    In that case, I'd try connecting to
    afp://192.168.1.120
    (I am inventing this IP address for the sake of argument - don't simply copy this number. Ask the IT guy what the server's IP actual address is. There are other ways to connect, and using the IP address is very crude and 'primitive' but it also cuts a few complexities out of the picture).
    If this does not work, it might mean that the server is not providing the AFP protocol - in that case, ask the IT guy if he can turn it on for you.
    I don't know much about what Microsoft's various product names mean (e.g. what exactly is included in a 'Microsoft small business server' - no idea), but there's a good chance there is a module available that is probably called 'Services for Macintosh' which can be installed.
    I've worked around Microsoft servers before, and if I remember correctly, 'Services for Macintosh' is not typically installed by default - it's part of the product, but it is not installed unless explicitly requested during install.
    The IT guy will need to get out the Microsoft server's install disks and install the optional Services for Macintosh, then turn it on. Once that is done, the above 'magical incantation' afp://yadiyadi... should work.
    If it does, make sure _everyone_ in the team uses the same method to connect to the server, and then try again - there's a good chance the server will now honor the file locking and warn the second user who attempts to open the document.
    - If the server is already using the AppleShare Filing Protocol, and you're already doing some variation of the above, and the whole point I made above is moot, try connecting using the SMB protocol instead. So, in the finder use 'Go - Connect to Server...' then use
    smb://192.168.1.120
    (replacing 192.168.1.120 by your server's real IP address).
    Again - make sure _everyone_ is using the same method to connect before trying whether the files are now locked properly.
    The AFP and SMB protocols are the two most common protocols that Macs can use to connect to a Microsoft file server.
    Now, the third possible cause: often people don't realize there are possibly multiple ways to connect to an MS server, and so people go browsing the network from their Macs and 'grab' whatever entry they see first.
    So what often happens is that user 'A' is actually connecting using SMB, and user 'B' is connecting using 'AFP' and in theory that should all work, but in practice sometimes things go wrong.
    My recommendation is to make sure that all users in the Mac workgroup connect in the exact same way - so there's no mix of SMB and AFP protocols being used.
    To verify which protocol is used, right-click or control-click on the volume name after it has been mounted on the Mac, and use the Get Info... menu item - the info dialog should tell you which protocol is being used. The easiest to see the mounted volumes is to go into the Finder Preferences, and under 'General' make sure it shows mounted volumes on your desktop. Then you can simply right-click the volume on the desktop to do Get Info...
    Hope that helps!
    Cheers,
    Kris
