New Western Digital "MyBook Premium Edition II" not mounting on firewire

I've just purchased a new WD external hard drive 1TB with triple interface. I've followed all the instructions to connect it via firewire 800 with no use. Tried firewire 400 also with no use. It only connected through USB 2.0. I tried re-partitioning the disk through the disk utility as it was mentioned in the instructions. Restarted my iMac. Nothing worked.
I made sure my firewire ports are working through connecting my older Maxtor II 300GB through the firewire 400. It was working as usual perfectly.
I tried connecting and disconnecting and restarting. Nothing seems to help. Is there anything wrong with the hard drive or is this an iMac issue?? I can't seem to make it work and everything on the manufacturer's technical support site isn't helping.
I've read a few issues on the forums here about firewire HDs not mounting. Can someone provide me with some guidance here??
Thanks

I read this post from "mucmacian" on the Macrumors site. It solved the firewire problem for me:
"Firewire 400 workaround
Some people may be experiencing issues connecting Firewire 400 devices to their new Aluminum iMacs.
At least for me, I've been messing around with an iBook G4 and my new 24" iMac, beeing unable to get the iBook connected to the iMac in target mode.
After a long lasting call with a very kind person at Apple Support, they contacted some cupertino based third level support guys and came up with a workaround:
As they stated, few users are having problems with Firewire 400 devices, even when connecting several Apple computers (depending on model and revision) in target mode to their new Aluminum iMac.
As far as I understood, the issue is related to low voltage input (diverging from Firewire specification?!?), meaning, the connected device is not able to deliver enough power through Firewire to work properly.
Simply connect the device using a Firewire hub with its own power supply, and things will work fine. At least, they did for me."

  • Western Digital MYBOOK Premium! **Issues**

I am getting bombarded with clients giving me the Western Digital MyBooks... and I am having the same issue on all of them!
At first, I had to format them using Disk Utility as "MAC OS EXTENDED" to avoid a disk error saying that the hard drive was full. After re-formating the drive, the transfer speeds are retardedly slow. (eg - about 28 hour to transfer 74 gigs).
I called Western Digital and they told me the hard-drive was defective. However, this is a familiar problem with the Western Digital brand.
I was wondering if there is a manual way to enhance the transfer speeds. I have it connected via USB 2.0 .

I don't know if this will be of any help for you since you are running the USB version of the mybook. We had a situation where we were using two 2TB Mybooks for secondary backup of a server. the Mybooks would lock up the finder after a few days, and we have had multiple issues with them. We found that the server was reporting a stuck process right off the bat after rebooting. It was a western digital program/driver for the mybook. Try deleting the below file and see how it works. USB will still be a bit slower than firewire however.

I would like to transfer my iTunes and photos etc from my PC to my new iMac via a external hard drive. Would somebody recommend one. I read that the Western Digital Mybook Essential 3.0 is good. Though as Mac has 2.0 is this fast enough? I am a basic user, surfing only.

If you plan on using the WD with the Mac after the iTunes transfer I would strongly recommend against WD. WD external HD's tend to be the most troublesome with Macs. If you intend to use the drive for backup using Time Machine or creating a bootable clone then I'd recommend a higher quality drive than WD. The drives I'd recommend in that case would be:
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    LaCie d2 Quadra series
    G-Tech G-DRIVE series
These are all high quality drives and enclosures with similar features. Personally I use the LaCie's however I would be happy to have OWC and G-Tech on my desk too. FWIW I've been using the LaCie's for 4 years and have 4 of them, all work perfectly and have never given me any trouble.

I am running my first time machine backup onto a Western Digital MyBook Live.  It is taking forever.  Is there antivirus software running in the background or any other settings I need to change to speed it up?  Also I am on a wireless network.

The initial Time Machine backup can certainly take a long time over wireless. Days, possibly. It's impossible for anyone here to be able to predict how long it will take, and wireless environmental conditions can change at any time.
Is there antivirus software running in the background
Only you can determine that. If you're using third party AV software, anything is possible.
NAS devices may not be compatible with Time Machine, regardless of what their manufacturers may claim. Even after the Time Machine backup completes, your backup may be unreliable. You may not discover that until you need to rely upon the backup for some reason, and corruption can occur months or years from now.
Time Machine supports the following backup configurations:
    A locally mounted volume
    Time Capsule
A volume resident on a USB hard disk connected directly to a Time Capsule or current production AirPort Extreme Base Station.
That's it. Any configuration other than the above list places you in an experimental category. If your backup fails, you're on your own.

  • Any advise on Western Digital Mybook (without Firewire)..........

I just bought a Western Digital Mybook, 500GB, for my pics, movies, iMovies, etc. I bought the model that does NOT have the Firewire. I only save data once a week or so and usually on the weekends. I did not buy it for work, just for family vid's, pic's and movies.
Anyone think spending the extra money on the Mybook Pro is worth it for someone like me and why? I can still return it (not opened yet). What is the advantage to having the Firewire? Can I still download my iMovies etc.? Will it just do it slower or not at all? Thanks for any help.

I have to admit... for my notebooks... I have typically used USB for my backups... only because I had the cables all set up and I would just disconnect one and plug in the other when I was doing backups. I knew the actual sustained throughput for Firewire was faster than USB 2.0, but I just thought the difference would be marginal... so I never bothered to try connecting via Firewire with my notebooks. I also have a Maxtor Onetouch with USB/FW 400/FW 800. I wanted to do a backup of my notebook before I went into work with it. Since I typically don't allow myself much extra time in the morning... I figured I'd try the backup with FW instead of USB just to see if it was any faster (thinking that if the backup didn't finish... I would just leave my notebook home that day)... I was very surprised that the backup was complete within about 25 min or so. In the past, my backups with that notebook, with roughly the same amount of data, took about 45 min or so over USB 2.0.

I backed up 6000+ photos from Snow Leopard iMac v.10.6.7 to new Western Digital "My book" successfully, I think! But when I attempted to COPY my photos to it in order to free up space on my HD, I made a mistake. When I dragged the iPhoto (11) Library to My Book and re-named it to "iPhoto Library.old" nothing happened. So I dragged it again, re-named it again (same name--that was the mistake, I guess!) and then it took about an hour+ to do its thing. When finished and I launched iPhoto by holding down the Option key, the dialog window listed two libraries: "iPhoto Library.old" and iPhoto Library.old (default)". So now what? It seems that I still have the originals when I open iPhoto, and do I have two copies, also? Should I delete one of them and if so, which one and how? Or should I eliminate both of them and start over again? And if so, how do I do that? Right now, neither my HD nor the My Book have changed the number of GB available or free since before I began this process. Will the numbers only change after I actually delete my original Library AND empty the Trash? I appreciate any light you can throw on this subject for me. I could lug it all to the local Genius Bar, but now I'm afraid to unplug anything for fear I'll lose everything! Thank you, you wonderful, bright people. (An 83-year-old Grandma, trying to keep up a little, at least)

Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. I didn't think I had the capability of backing up without an external drive, but  maybe I do since I upgraded. Do I?
But I bought this My Book mostly for freeing space because I like to make cards in Photoshop and I'm forever running out of space when I get too many layers (don't really know what I'm doing there, either).
Is there some way that I can rectify my mistakes and start all over?
Thank you so much for  beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message  that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!
So your kindness is very much appreciated.

  • Maxtor OneTouch III does not mount with Firewire

My Maxtor OneTouch III does not mount with Firewire.
I changed both cables, and ports on the drive to try with my 400 port on the MacBook Pro.
The drive will start up, the light will flash, remain steady, flash again. And then just as the Mac finishes booting, the light turns off and it does not mount.
It works just fine with a USB cable. But I bought it so it could be used as a firewire drive.
    Other firewire drives work.

    Hi Judy,
Has this external HDD ever worked while connected with FireWire? (In other words, did the drive just stop working via FireWire, or is this the first time you've tried to hook it up via FireWire?) Does it work over FireWire on another Mac?
If the answer to those questions is no, it's likely that the firewire ports on the external HDD are bad.

  • Western Digital Mybook HD does not mount with firewire

I bought a Mybook HD 500 GB from Western Digital with 3 interfaces FW400, FW800 and USB 2.
USB works but not firewire, somebody has a solution?
Impossible to mount the volume with firewire and there nothing on WD website.

No idea. My WD HD Pro is the same and I am quite disappointed. It usually mounts but not always. The 'button manager' is useless - this claim about the light showing me how full it is has never worked and the drive always takes ages to spin up when it is accessed slowing down all the drive access operations while the computer waits. Plus its noisy...

  • Western Digital My Book (white light) not connecting...need advice

Hi...I have been scouring forums for the past hours trying to trouble shoot this issue.
At one point (it may have been with Leopard) I was able to back up all my pictures and music onto my WD MyBook. It showed up in Finder. In fact, when in Finder I GO>>CONNECT TO SERVER....My Book is listed as one of the recent servers. However, when I try to connect it cannot find it.
I tried the Safari Bonjour...MyBook is not there either.
    I have reboot my computer.
    I have reboot the MyBook.
I unplugged the MyBook and the router (Airport) for 30 seconds, then plugged it all back in reconnecting.
I pressed the little reset button the MyBook.
No connection. Both the top and bottom bright white lights are illuminated and not blinking or anything on the MyBook.
Help....this was the 1TB external hard drive and I really don't want to just give up and spend another 200+ on a new external drive. Luckily my mac has behaved and I don't necessarily need my backup files...but I want to have a reliable backup in case something does happen. I am a photographer so backing up my many many files is necessary.
Any suggestions? If there is no way to fix (which is what I gathered from some of the forums I already visited)...then what other system besides western digital can you recommend? Apple is super expensive....Iomega seems decent, and also LaCie...but then again, I thought Western Digital was good too. Help....

Pondini will probably have my head, but I'll go ahead with my suggestion anyway:
    1. Because WD drives (enclosures) are not the most "trouble free", I'd seriously consider getting another external drive such as a LaCie or one from OWC (madsales.com).
    2. I personally have chosen not to use Time Machine; I don't like it because I can't boot with it and I don't feel it is very reliable either, so I'd suggest downloading either SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner (I use both). Install it in your Applications folder. Open Disk Utility and - either with your WD or the new drive attached - format the drive (click on the partition tab):
Choose how many partitions you want  (one or ?) and name each one.
Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Under Options, choose GUID partition scheme (necessary to make it bootable).
    Click Apply.
NOTE: this will erase all contents, so if you have anything on it you need, temporarily copy if elsewhere via drag 'n drop.
After it's finished, open CCC or SuperDuper.
Choose your internal as the source.
Choose the external (partition) as the destination.
    Click on copy.
When finished (my 80 GB takes about 40+ minutes), test it by going to Startup Pane in System Preferences, choose the external clone and click on Restart. If it does, all is well, and you can go back to restart with your internal. Once back on the internal, you can eject the external and unplug it/turn it off.
You now have a fully bootable clone of your entire system.
I update mine about once a week (that is all I need) - you can do it more or less often.
Now, I maintain two bootable clones because hard drives can (and will) fail at any time. So, you could do a Time machine backup on the other one if you want.

  • Replaced failed HDD Sat. L455-5000 with new Western Digital 320 SATA drive-problems with recovery

Original HDD died.  Replaced it with new WD 320 SATA from Best Buy-nice drive-good reviews.  Used Recovery Center DVD's I had burned earlier.  Three with Toshiba Recovery  2 with Windows Recovery Envrinoment and DRivers/Apps.
Toshiba REcovery only asked for first 3.  Computer restart after Recovery Install(First Three Disks) gives error message:
    File: \windows\system32\DRIVERS\LPCFilter.sys
    Status:  0xc0000428
WIndows Cannot Verify Digital Driver Signature.
Windows Boot Manager "screen" always comes up and Windows fails to start.
1.Asking for a windows installation disk-thought this was given in Toshiba Recovery DVD's I burned.
    2. Chosse language settings-click next
    3. CLick " repair your computer."
I thought the Toshiba Recovery Disks were supposed to install everything for me.  I don't have a sparate windows system disk.  Never burned one
    Any help woud be great.
    Thanks,
    Charles

    Time for some good news.
I received and installed an OEM WD 250 (Toshiba) replacement drive.  After loading the recovery disks this morning-it worked perfectly-just like "out of the box."
It was the HDD failure after all.  No software gliches at all.  Windows update of course is attempting to re-load about 500 updates. LOL.  I also learned to spread them out in groups of 10-20 long ago as well.  This will take some time; but the laptop is running fine.
So I learned some great lessons.  1)-stick with OEM replacement hardware-computers are "locked in time" to a definite hardware configuration that works well at that time in history.  2) If I had not used my own "decision" tree to problem solve-I'd still have a dead computer.  3) I was correct to order an external drive enclosure to test the bad drive after I was unable to do so with the laptop.  4)I made the right choices to contact the Western Digital Drive support to find out the new drive really might also be the problem.  5) It was also great to be able to get such amazing help on this forum too-what a great resource for Toshiba owners. 6)Finally-I was able to "chat" with the Toshiba Rep. online to confirm the OEM part number of the WD drive they had used-and ordered -cheaper- from Amazon.com.
    7) After 2 weeks of my own time(and great online resources) and $80.00-I fixed my laptop myself.  Never had to mail it anywhere.
    8) I also ended up with a great external backup drive-that I was always too lazy-and cheap-to order for myself  before.  LOL.
    9) Now what about the Toshiba OEM Graphics card that the "Windows Experience Survey' always says I need to replace?  Nope -not going there -yet.
    Thanks for all the help-
    Sincerely,
    Charles

  • Western Digital Mybook

Okay I wasn't sure where to put this question but most western digital questions seem to be within the OS discussions so here goes.
I have a 500gb external hd. it worked flawlessly for a year. now when i connect it, it powers on, the circular light starts spinning and then it all lights up as if its connected, but it won't show up on my computer at all.
i checked disk utility and sure enough it does show up.. but it can't be mounted to my desktop for whatever reason. i ran the verify/repair disk thing on it and this is the error i keep getting:
    "Verifying volume “My Book”
    ** /dev/disk1s1
    ** Phase 1 - Read FAT
Unable to read FAT (Input/output error)
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
Disk Utility stopped verifying “My Book” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 non HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
i have some very very important files on there, what can i do?

Thank you so much for your reply.
I have connected it to a Windows computer and the disc mounts, but I cannot access it, when I try to open it or right click on it, Windows Explorer says "Not Responding"
I will try what you are saying and post back on how it went. Based off the message it is giving me, does anyone know what the problem may be?

  • Western Digital MyBook Studio no longer works after Yosemite update

A little while ago (Jan 30) I updated Yosemite, and now my Western Digital My Book Studio (using firewire) shows up but no longer works - no Time Machine, or Super Duper back-ups. Does anyone know why this has happened, and what can be done to fix it?

I should add that the drive works fine with another MBP running OSX 10.6.8. Again, with 10.10.2 it either doesn't work or is incredibly slow.

  • External Drive does not mount with Firewire but is ok with USB !

Since 10.4.4 my external drive is no more recognized using firewire, but it mounts perfectly with USB
Using FW request me to reinitialize the disk, but then, the apple disk utility it is unable to reformat!
then I unplug FW , sets USB and everything is ok!
I connected the drive to my old IMac G4 700 and evrything is fine, FW and USB, using the same drive, using the same cable. I did repeat the test many times it is always ok with the old mac and it never mounts with FW on my newer Ibook.
I did reset the openfirmware but that was not successfull!
Then I brought both iBook and the faulty Drive to a friend (he owns a powerbook and also an external drive)
we verified that my drive does not mount on his powerbook G4 12" using FW and is ok with USB.
Then he tried his external drive and was very surprised to find the same fault with his drive and his PB using FW. (as for me everything is ok with USB!)
We are both very puzzled, our drives did work well before, (before 10.4.4 , and 10.4.5 did not improve!)
and now, with firewire, disks never mounts..
In addition I tried with the same cable to alternatively start, using the target mode, the ibook and the imac. For each test they were both recognized as external drives as they should..
So to try to sum up
    - Disk mount ok with USB (1 or 2)
    - Disk is no more recoknized with FW (but it was before with the exact same hadrware)
    - FW Cable seems to be ok as targuet mode works properly
    has anybody any idee?
It would be very munch appreciated..
thanks a lot for having read this long post..

Hi Andre, I can't remember except to say that it was mounting fine with tiger and I was able to copy files to it for backup purposes.
I just hooked it up to a PC and windows tells me the drive is not formatted. That's not a good sign, and this was stupid: I think I had the drive hooked up to my Mac Pro during the upgrade.
Idiotic, granted. But this was an upgrade, not a full install and I maybe was trusting in Apple's ability not to do extraneous stuff during an install like windows does. Oh well...
I appreciate any further ideas. Many Thanks, Frank.

  • External hard Drive will not mount via firewire tpo my Powerbook G4

I have a Powerbook G4 1.5, 2 Gb Ram and an 80 Gb Hard Drive. Well my problem is, I went and purchased a Western Digital External Hard Drive. The box states that this hard drive is compatible for both Windows and Mac. But for some reason I can't get the external hard drive to mount via the firewire. However it will mount by using the USB.
So can someone please provide some troubleshooting tips on how I can get this external hard drive to mount?
    Thanks

    hi there,
in your case, your drive is probably bad because the copy was interrupted. your hard drive may be finished, but more likely, just the file structure is damaged and/or you have bad sectors.
    you have a few options:
*if you don't need the data back:*
    • see if the drive appears in disk utility and try to erase/reformat (make sure to zero out data to avoid bad sectors)
    • if it doesn't appear, try a pc. it won't recognize it, but it may allow you to reformat/initialize it. then, connect back into mac (which will recognize a pc formatted drive) and reformat as mac os x extended (journaled).
*if you need the data back:*
    • try a program like data rescue II, file salvage, or boomerang data recovery first to recover the data
    • see if the drive appears in disk utility and try to repair disk
    • if that doesn't work, try disk warrior and/or drive genius
    • if you aren't successful, you may want to try a professional data recovery service (or me first, to ensure that you actually need someone as high tech as drive savers)
    • if you are successful and are able to recover the data, then erase the drive (zero out data) and then move the data back, to ensure you're working off a well formatted drive.
fyi, if your computer freezes in the future, be sure to try appleoptionesc first and force quitting the problem application. if that doesn't work, try controloption+appleeject (shutdown) and/or optionappleeject (restart). if those doesn't work, in this situation, the next best move would probably have been turning off the power on the hard drive. if that doesn't unfreeze the system in a few minutes, then hold the power button.
    hope this helps,
