Newbie GPIB & OS questions

I'm about to purchase equipment for my first LabVIEW project.
This will involve gain & I/V testing of photodiode arrays.
I'm planning on using a Keithley 2700 multimeter with a 7703
40-channel multiplexer card to measure several millivolt-level
voltages and a Keithley 248 high voltage power supply for the needed
1KV to 2KV variable bias. Both instruments GPIB controlled.
I'm figuring on purchasing the latest LabVIEW Full Development system
for Windows.
My questions are... should I get Keithley's GPIB card as it will
be talking to all Keithley equipment, or should I get NI's GPIB card
as the software will be theirs - or, does it matter?
And... is there a best version of Windows to use, or one to avoid?
Thanks,

It depends on your plans for future development. Therefore,
Regarding the software,
- If that's all you want to do, you can use XLinx software that comes with Keithley's equipment via RS-232 or GPIB (in this case, buy the card from Keithley too)
- If you want flexibility and power with new and difficult projects ahead, LabVIEW is a good choice.
- A cheaper development solution is TestPoint, especially if you are used to Visual Basic programming style.
Regarding the interface,
- RS 232 is the low cost solution.
- If you choose GPIB, it's better to have the card from NI when using LabVIEW (and the one from Keithley when using TestPoint). So, it's important to assure that the card match the software rather than the instrument.
Regarding the OS,
- don't s
pend extra money on other operating system … use what you have, it should be fine
- probably win 98 is a good choice in order to avoid some win95 (age) and NT/2000 (architecture) related problems
Hope this helps

  • Newbe with a question

First, I would like to say Hello to all of the other forummers, as being a newbe.
And as a newbe, I offcourse have a question....
Will the new AMD 333fsb  series processors run on my KT3 mainboard, after obviously flashing the bios?
    Thanks in advance, David.
Config: MSI kt3 ultra, xp1800, geforce 2ti, 512mb apacer ddr2700, 7200rpm maxtor and chello cable connection.

I heard somewhere that the chipset will support it but I don't know if MSI will work to get this board to support it.

  • OK, Newbie to Mac question.  Do I need to keep files after download/update

Sorry for such a boring newbie question.
(My last Mac was many years ago - the original Macintosh 528k with 2x 3.5" disks. The OS has changed 'a little', and doesn't have to be loaded in every startup!! Wow !!)
I had to go PC for business reasons, but now, I have <control> over my computing needs again. (Photographic business.)
OK. I searched Mac 101 but didn't find an answer.
Apart from Application Icons and/or Folders I have created, I have acquired a bunch of other files on the desktop. Do I need to keep them?
When I download updates, for example, I end up with a .dmg icons showing the HD in the center, with a title such as i1Match3-2.6Pantone.dmg (after updating my calibrator). I know the update is installed (and the app. is in the dock). Same with downloads or updates with Lightzone,, Firefox, etc.
First Question. Can I trash those .dmg icons?
Similarly, I have icons with what looks like an external HD, which I guess is the actual download. For example, RapidWeaver 3.5.1 (no extension), but there is also a .dmg icon. These "HD" icons cannot be dragged into a General Folder on the Desktop.
Second Question. If I can trash the .dmg icond, can I trash the "external HD" look icons once the program is installed. If I can't, where should they be kept ... I don't want them all over the Desktop ??
Third Question. I have some Folders which just materialized over a few days of use.
"Apples Caches" Folder (with arrow=shortcut?) with 10 file icons and 1 folder icon. Another ... "com.apple.kernelcaches" Folder with one 'kernelcache" file icon.
And three empty Folders "Edits", Measurement Data", and "Scan Tiffs". Have no idea why they popped up.
    What to do?
Thank you for reading my questions. I look forward to your proposed solutions.

    Al:
Thanks for the quick reply ! The .dmg's and the "HD" icons are now GONE. I am curious why they are needed after installions, but I will read up on that to satisfy my curiousity.
    Now, the remaining question ...
The two 'Apple caches' folders appeared on my desktop, just below the Macintosh HD icon, probably about a week or so after I got my Mac. I can't recall doing anything 'bad' or having any 'crash' or freeze-up. I seem to recall having to do a 'force quit' at one stage when I was setting up the scanner and Silverfast6Ai because I initially tried to instal non-Intel software. But on that occasion, everything fired right back up OK and the Mac has been absolutely brilliant ever since. What a wonderful change after XP and IE7 and all the daily drama.
The Folder which has the small black arrow (I guess shortcut) has files for:
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.kbdx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.tecx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.tecx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.sbdl
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.sbdl
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.kbdx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache
    com.apple.Components2.SystemCache.QuickTimeComponents
    com.apple.Components2.SystemCache.Components
plus it also contains a Folder:
    com.apple.kernelcaches ... which has
    kernelcache.ED112BB5 as the file.
Does this help you? I don't know if they have to be "put back" somewhere, or they are temporary files which can be trashed.
(As for the other empty folders "Edits" etc, my guess is they somehow arrived during a scan which I cancelled halfway through, or maybe from the Rapidweaver application when I was 'testdriving' the program. I am inclined to trash them anyway. Can't see how that would hurt.)
I reported that the question had been answered, anyway, but I would like MORE of the same !!
    Cheers
    CJ

  • Newbie color management question

    hi folks
using cs4. just finished a cmyk job on a new press. colors on the final print job were pretty faithful to what i saw on my monitor when doing the design, with a few exceptions that i'd like to tweak if possible. i'm new to color management, so looking for some pointers.
according to my research, the right thing to do is to request a colorsync or icm or icc profile from my press. i did...but my press was slightly confused and sent me a bunch of .icc files and i don't know which one to load. the press people are great people and it's a good press, but i got the feeling that they weren't asked this question a lot. so i ended up using u.s. web coated (swop) v2 as a profile, which is what they ultimately recommended.
so if i can't get an icc profile from my press, the other approach according to my research is to wing it and adjust the color profile on my own so that what i see on my monitor matches the printed output. in other words, i take the printed output and hold it up to my screen and manually adjust the color profile settings. i believe this is done in photoshop under edit-->assign profile and/or edit-->color settings, and then sync the color management for all applications using the bridge. or maybe this can be done in indesign? i'm asking the question on this forum because of the great responses i've gotten here.
i don't want to screw things up and i'm a newbie with this, so... any advice out there? my basic situation is that the colors were reasonably faithful but there was a very curious thing where a c=0,m=0,y=35,k=15 color looked very green on the printed page even though it was a mellow looking yellow on my monitor. i want to try to adjust that.
    thanks.........

Do you have a colorimeter and monitor profiling software? That's the place to start any color managed workflow. You also need a reasonably good monitor that CAN be calibrated. If the monitor isn't accurately showing you the colors, then nothing you do is going to matter.
Matching the monitor to the print is an old technique that works only when you have a closed loop where all work is output on the same press under the same conditions. The purpose of using device independent editing spaces, such as Adobe RGB, is that in theory any properly calibrated monitor will display the image the same, and you can convert to any known output space at the time of output.
Terms like mellow looking yellow are pretty subjective, so I don't know what you were expecting, but I wouldn't expect 35y, 15k to be very bright, nor very yellow. While I wouldn't describe the color as green on my monitor, it certainly doesn't resemble a banana, and next to a brighter yellow one might call it greenish by comparison. It's really a light yellowish gray,I think.
I'm putting up a comparison here to see what it looks like, but colors won't be accurate in a browser.

  • (newbie alert) - simple question?

My Dell is four years old and dying. I am considering an iMac G5. One of the main things I would want to be able to do with it, right out of the box, is as follows. I asked someone at the Apple store if this was easy to do, and his response seemed very complicated. Would a new iMac G5 using just the pre-loaded iLife stuff be able to the following:
I have burned many old home family movies from VHS to DVD using a DVD recorder hooked up to the VCR. The DVD recorder is a cheap model, so it doesn't allow me to edit much at all; I more or less get just a straight transfer of whatever is on the VHS tape, over to the DVD.
I'd like to be able to pop in one of those DVDs I've generated from those VHS tapes, and then be able to really aggressively work with that "footage" to create montage clips into a new "movie", so maybe out of 60 minutes of raw footage of a family picnic from 1985, I want to be able generate a watchable 5-minute DVD clip that just shows the interesting stuff. I'd like to be able to lay music from iTunes over top of this, add titles and credits and whatnot, and then burn to DVD to share with family members, or upload to a web location (.Mac?) for family members to access and view.
It would be nice if I could also incorporate digital still photos from my digital camera, and/or short MPEG movies my "still" camera can take (each just 15 seconds long).
Is this all within the easy grasp of the iLife suite?
    Thanks!

    Thanks.
Last night, I took a close look at the inputs and outputs on my little JVC mini-DV video camera, which is about four years old. It's pretty clear it has no analog-in ports, so I don't think I can use it as the go-between unit from the VHS for a transfer of the VHS content onto the iMac. Reason being, the only "in" port on the mini-DV camera is a little "DV in /out" port, and I certainly don't believe the VCR has any type of corresponding "DV" output line. So, as for getting the old home movies from the VHS tapes into the iMac for editing and DVD buring, I believe -- based on the responses I've received in this forum -- it does boil down to using something like the Canopus ADVC-100 to allow me to make that transfer.
The related question for the overall project then becomes, am I confident I'll be able to get content into mu iMac from my other main source: a small library of home movies on mini-DV cassette tapes. The JVC mini-DV camcorder has an S-video out port (plus a "headphone" audio out jack that splits to RCA audio lines), so where can I run that to get it into the iMac? Would the Canopus ADVC-100 take that in? The only other "out" line on the camcorder is that "DV in/out" line I mentioned above. Nothing anywhere says anything about firewire... is that "DV" line a standard thing? Can the iMac take it in directly? Could it run through the Canopus unit?
    Thanks a million.

  • Pen Tool newbie has some questions

I put off learning how to control the Pen Tool far too long, but recently, I dug in & spent about 4 hours getting the hang of it. After about an hour, I had the basics, so I decided to practice on a complex outline. I spent several hours outlining a very intricate object with great precision. The tool was set on Path. What I did not realize is the Path I was creating was not being saved when I saved my work. It completely disappeared when I closed the file, much to my dismay. So obviously, I missed something in the instructions. Here are my questions:
    1. How should I have saved my Path?
    2. My goal was to complete a complex outline & use it for a mask or selection to remove the background - to extricate a complex object from a complex background. Was Path the best setting for this goal? What if I had used Shape, or Pixel Fill?
I really loved the control the tool gave me, like a digital Exacto knife, but would appreciate some suggestions to help further my exploration of the Pen Tool.

"I dug in & spent about 4 hours getting the hang of it."
That should be enough, for one day that is. Keep with it. Use it often over the next few years. Take on jobs that need paths. You will find the pen tool to be one of Photoshop's most valuable tools.

    Ken

  • Apple newbie with dummy question

I have a question about my 3 day old Core Duo. I'm connecting just fine and love my machine, but before I go paying bills/banking/etc online, I want to make sure my connection is secure. I'm connecting wirelessly via a Lynksis WRT54G router. The very first time I turned this bad-boy on, it asked for a password to the network, but hasn't since. I'm afraid I may have "keychained" the password or opened the network to everyone or something. Is there a way to check? I chatted with an agent, and they said since it was a third party thing (Lynksis), they couldn't answer. All I want to make sure of, is that my connection is secure with either WPA/WEP. I don't even know what that means, I just know it makes it secure! Again - first time Apple user (unless you count my Dad's IIC when I was 8) - so please assume I'm a dummy when you reply!
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hello Matt
Goto your router's config at http://192.168.1.1 the default user is admin and the password is admin
goto the wireless tab then wireless security. Make sure your using WPA-PSK and NOT WEP.
WEP is easily cracked WPA is a lot more secure.
The first time you connect to a wireless network you do have the option to add the password to the keychain, this is normal and does not have any security problems.
To check to see if you had added your wirless network password to your keychain open up the keychain Access found in /Applications/Utilities
You can then see a list of all the keychain entries you may see your wireless network listed in there.

  • Newbie with LOM Questions

I recently setup our new Intel xServe, mainly for file and print services. I have no problems using or connecting to the LOM processors with the Server Monitor App. But my question is which LOM port should I be using to connect with Server Monitor? I can connect to both at the same time, and both give the same info. Is there a better one to use?
Also, in Server Monitor it list the LOM processors IP in both the IP address and Name columns. I would like to be able to change so that it would list the servers name in the name column. Any ideas?
Thanks for any reply's in advance.

I can't answer No.1 but here are my views on 2 and 3.
    2. That is true at the moment, there are no Mac viruses or other malware out in the wild. This may change in the future, but for now you are quite safe. If you intend to install Bootcamp and Windows, then you will in the windows environment be exposed to all the windows viruses, etc.
    3. I very rarely shutdown my iMac, usually only if I go on holiday or need to reboot after a software install. I always use sleep even for longer than 8 hours.

  • Complete Newbie with Organizing Question

Please understand that I'm a complete Neophyte at Mac, and iPhoto. Please respond accordingly.
I'm a Windows guy who has succumbed to the intrigue and mystery of the Mac. I've got the Intel Dual Core iMac with 250GB HDD and 1 GB RAM. I just got it less than a month ago, and I've managed to fill up the internal hard drive to the top. My largest HDD space is taken up by my photos. Before reading any documentation (Windows guys rarely read documentation) I "moved" my iPhoto Library from the "me" user directory/folder over to a "shared" directory/folder.
Long story short, I now have multiple copies of photos, and the calendars and books we were beginning to work on have lost their pointers to the appropriate pictures.
Here's the jist of my question. Can I just delete the entire iPhoto Library, and all the photos and then sort of start over from scratch? I still have all my originals on my PCs that are all home networked together.
My apologies for my ignorance, and also if this is covered somewhere else in the discussion forum. I'm just a bit frustrated, as well as a bit inpatient to get it all fixed. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Mike Macygin

    Mike,
    Delete your old library
    Under your account, open iPhoto
A new library will be created
    Import your photos
    Close iPhoto
Do a "get info" on the external drive to make sure it is formated for a Mac.
If not, use Disk Utility, found in your Utilities folder to erase it and format it for a Mac. You can also partition the drive at this time. One partition you can use for your iPhoto Library folder and the other partition you can use for backups.
Here is an Apple kb on moving the library to an external

  • A newbie pre-sales question

I have hours of music on DAT tapes. Track numbers are already correct. Is it possible to record into Logic Express (or any program?) and have the tracks recognized? (My CD Recorder does that)
Also, is it possible to record into Logic Ex from the direct digital input of the Mac without an audio interface box in between?
    Thank you

Not sure about the 1st question but YES to the 2nd one - I record my electric guitar directly into LE using a standard guitar cable and a 1/4" -> 1/8" adapter - I use Amplitube and Guitar Rig plugins - sounds great. I also bought an M-Audio Audio Buddy (small 2 channel pre-amp) as it also has gain controls, etc and it seem to give me a fatter sound - it was only $59 at the Guitar Center - guitar plugs into it and the cable and adapter from it into my Imac...

  • AS3 newbe target my_mc question

Good day to all of you. I have a basic question.
    I have movC_mc inside movB_mc inside movA_mc
AS2 to access movC_mc from the my Actions layer in frame 1 in the root would be
         movA_mc.movB_mc.movC_mc
My question is how can I target the movA_mc from the root of my .fla
This is what I got so far
    movA_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, a_player);
    function a_player(e:MouseEvent):void{
        Object(this).movA_mc.movB_mc.movC_mc.x = 250
I am sure this is very simple, but just can't get my head to transition from AS2 to AS3.
    Thanks again

if all 3 movieclips were created in the authoring environment use:
    movA_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER,  a_player);
    function  a_player(e:MouseEvent):void{
        movA_mc.movB_mc.movC_mc.x = 250
if any were created with code, referencing mov_mc may be different.

  • IWeb Newbie: Blog HTML Question

Hi, I'm relatively new to IWeb and have a question relating to blogs created in Iweb. When I create a new entry for my blog, and try to add a video for youtube (as a link) in place of the default picture, the video does not appear on my main page. I have used the html snippet and see the video on my blog entry page, however it does not appear on my main page. How do I go about including video's in a new blog entry page so I can view them directly from my main (intro) page? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I am using the Modern Frame template for my web site. When I add the blog template, a pre-set template shows up. Is there any way to edit or change it?
no and yes... no, you can't do much of anything while working inside iweb; yes, you can change it by changing the template xml file. Suzanne Boben at 11Mystics.com have done it for years.
For example, I would like to change the hyperlink color from red to blue. It won't let me do that. I go to the hyperlink inspector and I can't choose anything.
outside of changing template xml, this can be done in two ways (beside the above method):
    1) post edit the blog CSS file (search my post for blog CSS), this requires post edit and perhaps after every publishing.
    2) build your own widget to change the blog CSS and you only need to add the widget once. see my example here: http://www.cyclosaurus.com/Home/CyclosaurusBlog/CyclosaurusBlog.html
the example is done with my widget.
Also, when I view the web site on my computer, it looks fine, however when I view it on my iphone 3GS it shows an old font that I was using, why?

  • Newbie java - rpc question

we have the following situation: old server written in C++ running on a defined set of platforms, using rpc to expose its services. modifications of the server should be avoided. what would be the best way to access rpc from java? as I see it (and considering a defined and small set of platforms) implementing rpc calls in C-functions and calling them from java would be a good solution. are there any better ways?
    thanks in advance
    milan

    thanks.
I have one more question regarding this configuration:
lets say, i have already developed rpc-enabled-classes. now, if i would like to use these classes in a servlet/jsp-based layer running on a different machine (with a possible firewall between them) then I would implement an RMI server executing rpc-classes and access those classes from servlet/jsp over RMI, right?
my first idea was to use EJB with rpc-classes, but EJB do not support native methods.
are there any alternatives to this?

  • Newbie Database Access Question

I am familiar with SQL and database access from web programming, but have never done these things from within a Java application. My google searching has been fruitless thus far, so I'd appreciate any references to beginner's guides about how to query databases from a Java app and manipulate the resulting recordsets. Anything on Access db's would be ideal.
    TIA,
    John

Thanks for the reference. I have a question about this section of the tutorial:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/jdbc/basics/connecting.html
Under the section "Loading the Drivers" is the following paragraph:
Loading the driver or drivers you want to use is very simple and involves just one line of code. If, for example, you want to use the JDBC-ODBC Bridge driver, the following code will load it:
    Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
Your driver documentation will give you the class name to use. For instance, if the class name is jdbc.DriverXYZ , you would load the driver with the following line of code:
Class.forName("jdbc.DriverXYZ");My question is: How do I decide which driver I need for connecting to an Access db on a Win XP machine? Is there perhaps another reference which answers these kinds of questions?
    Thanks again,
    John
