Newbie question - SWF file download size

If I have say 20 different screens to display in a flex application, after I compile the size of the swf file would be quite big (5+Mbs apprx) for the browser to download.  Hence, the users will have a waiting state unless the SWF file is completely downloaded to the browser cache.  And if there are any update to the file the complete file will be again downloaded to the client.
I want to reduce this download time and ensure that users do not get tired of waiting for download to happen.  Preferably I would like to load the components/screens as and when required (like it is done in java web start).  Is something like this possible in flex?  If yes how?
One of the approaches is to have multiple SWF files say for every module.  Even in such cases the size of SWF file will be large enough for the user to wait.  It will also display a blank screen on the browser when switching from one SWF file to another (considering it will be done through HTML).
This is a practical problem and must be faced by a number of applications.  That makes me believe Flash must have something that provides dynamic loading of components as and when clicked.

  • IronPort S170 WSA - Max file download size

    Hello,
we're using an IronPort S170 WSA. Downloading big .iso (maybe other files, too) files fails. As far as I can find out, files of 2300MB or less can be downloaded, files of 3300MB or bigger fail to download (I haven't been able to try files with sizes between 2300MB - 3300MB). Using the same client without using the IronPort as a proxy, the download of the big files succeed.
The web page error message indicates:
    Blocked by [companyname] Web Proxy
    Category = Allowed%20URL%208080
    WBRS Value = -
    DVS Verdict = -
    DVS Threat = -
So, I assume there is a setting in the IronPort that prevents the download of files exceeding a size limit. But I cannot find any config item that controls this. Does anyone know where this setting can be found?

Do you get an instant block for large files?  Or does it try to download for a while, and then fails?
If it is an instant block, it should be under Web Security Manager > Access Policies.  Look in the object types section.
If you are downloading for about an hour and the downloads stop, it may be authentication related.

  • .swf files downloading and opening in RealPlayer, not Safari

Every time I click on a link to an .swf file, instead of the file opening in Safari and playing, Safari downloads the file and attempts to open it in RealPlayer, which doesn't work. I'd prefer to simply be able to open the .swf directly in Safari (I can do this by dragging the downloaded file into a Safari window showing about:blank, but I'm lazy and would like to skip this seemingly unnecessary step). Any hints?

Check that in your Quicktime preferences, under MIME settings that SWF files are associated with that, or realplayer, then Safari should open them using the plugin - or make sure you have got the shockwave/flash plugin installed.

  • Flash newbie question (swf open warning)

I'm just learning Flash CS4 Pro, and I'm a little mystified by something.
I created a swf file after going through some of the Adobe.TV tutorials.
When I drop it in my Firefox browser window, it opens and plays, but it gives me the following warning:
I can't understand why it would be trying to contact the Internet, I only have a few shapes, a swf animation, and a button.
    Please advise.
    Thanks

The problem is NOT your .swf, or .fla file. Flash Player security for local content restricts network communication for certain kinds of content that is stored on your local computer, unless you give permission.
You will need to change your security settings for flash.
... if you want to test .swf's locally that have links to the internet... buttons usually do...

  • Newbie Question: F4V file size is huge compared to .mov

Hi, I have a 28 MB .mov that I want to embed into a web page using Flash / Media Encoder. In Media Encoder settings it says the estimated file size will be 2486MB. Am I missing something? It is a long video of a ppt presentation (about 1 hour). I'm not concerned about quality, just file size.
    Thanks!!!

The simplest and most overlooked is to change the background
image quality from "High" to "Standard" - this effectively does
just what you mentioned, decreasing color depth. This can be done
by selecting the slide(s) and using the "Slide > Video Quality"
menu for the change. The highest quality isn't always the default,
but check it on your slides to see. If the project is a converted
Power Point, for instance, the "High" quality setting is the
    default...
If you notice "bleeding" of background colors, you may have
to increase the color depth (slide "video quality") on the affected
    slide, to cure the problem.
Regarding your reference to "best practice", I recommend a
DevCenter article written by Dave Mozealous who was at that time a
staffer for the Macromedia Captivate team.
    The
    link is right here
Hope this helps get you sorted!
    Some final personal thoughts:
First, since you appear to be a Flashie, keep in mind that
images in Captivate are stored, edited, and displayed as bitmaps,
which are much larger files then the vector-graphics you have
    worked with in Flash.
    Second,
any image of 1024 X 744 is going to be real -
real - big; and you are setting that as the size for every
background in your Captivate project. Sometimes that cannot be
avoided, but often people create large Captivate projects simply
because they haven't used the product long enough to realize what
problems that can cause. So if you can work with a smaller pixel
size for your projects, by all means, do so.

  • File download size limit - 2 GB?

I have CE560 content engines running ACNS 5.3.1. Users trying to download files over 2GB via a browser get only about 2GB of the download. There are no errors. Is there some limit? Setting I can change?

If you do the writing of files yourself, e.g. using the Write File node,
then you can go to www.openg.org and checkout the OpenG Toolkit. There
    should be a link from
    http://www.openg.org/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=OpenG+Toolkit to the
sourceforge page where you can download the entire Toolkit or portions
thereof. You are interested in the Large File IO libarary which access
the Win32 API to handle files bigger than 2GB.

  • Newbie question on file tags / keywords

Over the last few years I have taken a few thousand pictures and have them organized with tags using Vista Photo Gallery.  This application worked great, but I how have purchased Photoshop SC5 and would like to start working with Bridge.  I can see the tags that I set in Photo Gallery, but not sure how I can utilize them in Bridge to sort/locate files. Does anyone have any suggestions, since I don’t what to have to manually create a keyword for every tag. Is there any way for me to select all my images and import the data into the Bridge database structure?

keyword/tags in most cases are written to
the image.  When you open the image in Bridge and you see the keyword
it should show up in the keyword panel.
If it is italicized it means it is temporary, and will be gone when you shut down bridge.  It you want the keyword to be permanent right click on it and select "make persistent" from the fly out menu..

  • Newbie Question - Corrupt Files

    Hello all-
I'm just learning the ins and outs of using and maintaining my MacBook. Honestly, before I owned a Mac I never cared about running maintenance scripts, backing up, etc. Anyway, I like to peruse the forums just to gain knowledge and see what everyone else is talking about, and I noticed a topic that appears fairly frequently: corrupt files. Why do files suddenly become corrupt, and is there something I can do to prevent this?
    Thanks.

    rj80:
    You are very welcome.
In terms of preventive measures, Unix Maintenance (CRON cleaning) is one of the very important procedures. See Gulliver's article for details and links to software to assist with this task.
Running Disk Repair from Disk Utility or starting up in Safe Mode from time to time keeps you on top of what is going on with your directories.
One of the commonest problems many users run into is letting their HDDs get too full. The rule of thumb is to have 15-20% free space on your drive. Not only does this enable you computer to perform better, but it also helps prevent directory issues, which can lead to data loss and eventually a Hard Disk crash.
I appreciate your thoughtfulness in awarding stars. Thank you.
    Good luck.

  • Flash Media Playback configurator swf file size

    Hello,
I just start using the Flash Media Playback configurator : http://www.osmf.org/configurator/fmp/ and I am very surprised that the size of the swf file is less than 2KB. The swf file used is http://fpdownload.adobe.com/strobe/FlashMediaPlayback.swf
How did you compile it to make it so small ? It is based on OSMF ?
Usually the swf file's size of a flash video player based on OSMF seems to be greater. For example the swf file used on page http://www.osmf.org/ (http://www.osmf.org/strobe1_0/StrobeMediaPlayback.swf) is about 193KB or on page http://osmf.org/dev/1.6gm/setup.html (http://osmf.org/dev/1.6gm/StrobeMediaPlayback.swf) is about 422KB.
    Thanks in advance.
    Thomas

    Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply Gelu. I emptied the cache of my web browser and had a look at all http requests (with Charles proxy and Firebug) sent when loading the page http://www.osmf.org/configurator/fmp/. The only .swf loaded I can see is http://fpdownload.adobe.com/strobe/FlashMediaPlayback.swf.
Is there another cache involved ?
    Thanks,
    Thomas

I tried with 'GUI_DOWNLOAD', but it is not working. It means the file is downlaoded to presentation server but when i opened it 'Page can't be displayed' message is comming.

    Hello,
For processing XMLs always try to make use of the class CL_XML_DOCUMENT.
You can download the XML stream to a local file using the method of EXPORT_TO_FILE class CL_XML_DOCUMENT.

  • Differences between the 2 ways to play local swf files in flash player

There are 2 ways to allow the flash player to play local swf files:
Add the directory/file of the swf to the Global Flash Player Trust directory. http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ActionScript/3.0_ProgrammingAS3/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d118a9 b90204-7c95.html
Add the directory/file of the swf to the Trusted Location Settings in the Local Settings Manager.http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlayer/LSM/WS6aa5ec234ff3f285139dc56112e3786b68c-7ff0.htm l#WS6aa5ec234ff3f285139dc56112e3786b68c-7fea
Adobe doesn't mentioned in the document what's the differences between these 2 methods, and they look has the same effect. But when I'm doing it on OS X, Safari 6.1, the first method doesn't work (It was working when I was using Safari 6.0). And then I tried method 2, it works…
So I'd like to ask what are the differences between these 2 methods to play local swf files?

For playing local SWF files, Download the Macintosh Flash Player 11.9 Projector
It's a standalone app. Just copy it to your Applications folder. Launch it, and drag the SWF to the Dock icon. It'll play.

  • Newbie question: integrating SWF, movie files

    Hi all!
Thanks in advance for your help--I'm trying to use Flash to
integrate several files into a slick screencast. Basically, I need
to use Flash to play a movie file, then play a SWF file, then
another movie file and be done. I was hoping to also put in some
text and animation (PowerPoint-like, not too intense) in between
those things, but can jettison that if that's difficult.
I know the import command does wonders with one video, but
I'm trying to use multiple types of files including SWFs, which is
throwing me off a bit. I realize I'm being incompetent here, but if
anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. And this goes
without saying, but I don't mind coding at all.

I strongly recommend you to use Compressor. It is easy to use and there a lot  of presets.

  • Beginner Question re: SWF files and FLA files

    Hi,
Im new to flash. I have some templates (in FLA format with all supporting files...xml; html; and the swf file). When using html templates, I can modify the content easily by simply adding or changing the text <p>original text</p> to <p>steve custom text</p> and so on.
My issue is Im trying to modify the content of the fla files into a new swf file but do not know how to access the text, background or images the tempalte is currently producing. The timeline at the bottom doesnt show objects and their timelines like the basic tutorials show me.
Is there a way to access the content of of an fla file or perhaps the content of an swf file? I think the swf file is like a jpeg coverted from RAW, meaning its the end product and the source file is where the modify is done.
Am I swimming in the deep with sharks?
    Thanks!

hmm..so if the template ive downloaded depicts a green ball bouncing across an orange  background(swf file). The objects (green ball) and the background (simply overlay colored orange) is embedded into the FLA AS3 code?
not necessarily.  they could be created with code, they could be created with the tools in the fla and they could be loaded bitmaps.
To be clear these objects (in my example: ball and background) are not external jpegs (or similar file type like png) which I can open, edit, then allow the code to access and utilize the new object. For example, change the ball into a square and changes it color to purple and then change the background to pink via PS or illstr.
In short, Im having trouble trying to find the objects which are being manipulated by the code. My current perspective with templates is to modify the image or text by accessing the files delivered with the template. If the .html commands to place image221.jpeg in certain div, I would just open the images files, find image221.jpeg, modifiy the image and then save it as image221.jpeg. Of course I can create a new image save it as steve123.jpeg, save it to the images folder and then modify the code to access the new file by using its new name.
This is what Im trying to accomplish with my flash template but cant find the source objects .
Im getting the impression this cant be done.
    that's almost certainly incorrect.
My final question is then, where are source images or text or movie files stored?
noone can say without direct inspection.
Is it possible they are on third party servers on the web?
    no
Are they imbedded in the code?
    maybe yes, maybe no.
I can only assume if they are stored on my drives (in an external format) that I would be able to access them.
correct.  more specifically, they would have to be in the directory with your embedding html and swf or a subdirectory.
If however, they are on a a third part web site or embedded into the code, then I may be in way over my head.
you can assume this is not the case.
so, open the fla in flash.  click control/test.  click view and make sure bandwidth profiler and streaming graph are checked.  you should then be able to see the main timeline as the swf plays.  note the main timeline frame where you see the object(s) you want to edit.
close the test environment and go to that main timeline frame and start sleuthing to see if the objects were created in flash.  you can also click on the first object in the library and arrow down looking for the object(s) you want to edit to see if they were created without code.  if you find them, note their library name and possibly linkage id or class.  use movie explorer to search for those names.
but, to be sure, it can be very difficult to edit templates.  i've not seen one yet that was made by a competent developer and i've worked on dozens of them.
