Newbie to Compiling - Kernel Source folder

Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to Arch Linux and I'm absolutely loving it, it feels like the perfect distro to me.
I have a quick question which I feel is easy to answer yet no matter how I search, I can never see a definitive answer - so basically I compiled my own custom kernel today in Arch which I'm running on right now.
Everything is running great, though the only real reason I did it was for the learning experience. My question is, I compiled the kernel in my home directory, and what is left over now is the source folder itself which is around 600mb and I'm running a little short on space at the moment and I'm wondering, can I safely just delete this folder? Or, even after installing the kernel is it still somehow depending on this folder?
I thought maybe like some program compiles I have done previously I could get rid of the source/build directory after completion but I'm sure I saw the Catalyst build module utilizing my kernel folder during it's build, so I'm not so sure now lol.
Thanks in advance, I know I'm probably missing something completely. I'm happy to learn in any case.

Hi, I think you're absolutely right, in fact I was planning too but I guess in the end as I am actually using this system I thought I'd try do it this way for the pacman integration, but certainly sometime I should do it the manual way (though it doesn't seem much harder).
Also on a side note, I installed v86d for the framebuffer support with Splashy, but when I update my mkinitcpio for my new kernel it says 'v86d' module not found during the rebuild process, but if I do it for my original kernel there is no issue. I guess I assumed any new modules I installed would automatically point to my current running kernel (the new one). But doesn't seem so.
Any ideas?

  • Compiler warning: Source folder "server" does not exist and will be ignored

    Hi,
    i am using NWDS 7.0 SP16. I have a development component type "J2EE Sever Library", which uses a java component. Everything works fine, except during the build i get a warning "Warning: Source folder "server" does not exist and will be ignored.".
    Then i created the folder named "server" manually, but the build finished again with warning, now saying:
    "Warning: Source folder "server" exists but is empty and will be ignored."
    I created a dummy-file in the directory "server" and now the compilation is fine, no warnings.
    I like to get my build free of any warnings, so what's wrong here? I found no documentation to create the folder/file manually.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Regards,
    Thomas

    Hi Raman,
    I am also getting the same error . i moved my srm transports from DEV to QA and replicated the datasources into BI . and then i moved the BW transports from dev to QA.
    when i check the datasource it is pointing to D60 instead of Q60 . when i check the transformations getting the same error :
    source system dosen't exist.
    can you please let me know how you resolved this issue. your reply will be  highly appreciated.

  • Reasonable to have compile kernel + source package?

    Most modules require the kernel sources in order to compile, and I thought it would be nice to have the kernel sources used for the stock kernels available as a package. I know it's possible to use the abs or to download the kernel from kernel.org, but then you must go through the hassle of compiling the same kernel.
    This isn't a big deal, just a nice kernel thing to have.
    Any thoughts?

    bardo wrote:Well, I don't use the provided PKGBUILD. The latest stable kernel is 2.6.11.11, our latest build is 2.6.11.10, at least in current. The last number increases as trivial fixes are inserted in the kernel tree, so they're not prone to vulnerabilities as other packages are. IMHO these shouldn't be treated as new releases, but as fixes, which is exactly what they are. Just like when someone releases a new build of a package. That's why the lesser minor was created, and why I think it should arrive faster than other packages in the stable repo.
    This way I could get and compile my own source without discrepancies from the headers package, often needed by other packages. Otherwise, I should have a "stable" headers package and the latest full kernel sources providing kernel26. The source is not unstable by itself. It is what I do of it that makes it a risk. But this happens with many softwares, doesn't it?
    What does that have to do with anything under discussion? We're talking about the kernel binary + kernel headers.  If you compile your own kernel of a different version, then OF COURSE your headers will be different, unless you install the headers with your new kernel as the PKGBUILD does - if you compile a new kernel because you feel the release speed isn't fast enough, do you really thing a new kernel-headers package is going to release any faster?
    using the default arch package, the kernel binary and headers are provided.  If you want to compile your own kernel, fine, do that - just provide your own headers in that case - it's not hard.
    bardo wrote:Another reason because I don't use that PKGBUILD is because abs doesn't work on my machine, but that's totally OT here
    abs is a bash script... there's no possible way it could fail unless:
    a) you don't have cvsup installed (abs will spit out a big fat error saying "install cvsup" if you don't)
    b) you don't have a network connection
    c) user error
    hell, you don't need to use abs to build a package - "man makepkg"

  • Compiling a driver, need assistance on kernel source configuration

    Hello BBS.
    I am compiling a module for the Asus PCE N53 wireless pci-e card. I have obtained the driver source, and followed the instructions, and have gotten to the point where I need assistance. The instructions requires the kernel source, i have successfully obtained and configured it using the Command line prompt, except for one feature. I need to enable the intel IPW2200 driver code in the kernel source for this driver. What procedure do I follow to enable it?

    > I know in face value, that my request may seem odd. I just need to use the source of the kernel, not a new kernel... I have found that what I am requesting... will fix the problem, based on a Gentoo solution: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-93 … art-0.html. Needing to know how to configure the kernel source to enable the intel driver still stands. The source I am using is the latest arch kernel source.

  • A PKGBUILD that helps you compile kernel from local source tree

    I don't know if someone did this beofore. Hours ago I wrote a PKGBUILD file for compiling kernel,
    it is different than the one from abs. It allows you
    compile a kernel from a exiting kernel source tree and leave it clean.
    honor the Archway, this means you have a clean filesystem
    It is acutally because I'm currently playing with The Eudyptula Challenge.
    and I'm tied our compress/decompress a kernel tree all the time. If you are kernel developer, you
    may also find it useful.
    The PKGBUILD file worked on my machine, I will add headers and docs later.
    Oh, almost forgot: here is my PKGBUILD:
    #So we will have a clean src tree
    pkgbase=linux-test
    _kernel_bin=kernel_build
    #the variable you have to provide
    _builddir=kernel_build
    kernel_src_dir='/home/developer/Courses/kernel-base'
    _srcname=kernel_tree
    #end the variable you have to provide
    pkgver=3.8.1
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="The Linux kernel and modules"
    depends=('coreutils' 'linux-firmware' 'kmod' 'mkinitcpio>=0.7')
    makedepends=('xmlto' 'docbook-xsl' 'kmod' 'inetutils' 'bc')
    optdepends=('crda: to set the correct wireless channels of your country')
    provides=("kernel26${_kernelname}=${pkgver}")
    conflicts=("kernel26${_kernelname}")
    replaces=("kernel26${_kernelname}")
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    url="http://www.kernel.org/"
    license=('GPL2')
    source=(#if we provide this, means kernel compile progress is already done

  • Update modules with compiling kernel from soure issue.

    Compiling kernel from abs or aur take me much time, so i decide compile kernel from source, compilation and installation successfully but make initial RAM disk doesn't update full modules (crypto,lvm...). I specified -c option to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf but the result is the sam, non-autodectec doesn't help too. When i look into /lib/modules directory, 3.6.6-1-ARCH folder contain "kernel" folder which has a lot of things (arch, crypto, net..) and i think this is my extra modules were declared in HOOK array's mkinitcpio.conf. The another one only contain net folder so i can't boot into this kernel without having loaded others.
    any suggestion for this problem? tks for reply.

    am sorry, i re-tried with HOOK array without autodectect and it can load modules but there are two error:
    ==> ERROR: module not found: `dm-crypt`
    ==> ERROR: modules not found: `dm-snapshot`
    ok i will try to load these modules by manually.
    EDIT: i tried to load dm-mod, dm-crypt, dm-snapshot but it isn't helpful. Errors still remain. any suggestion?

  • Oracle kernel sources

    Hi everybody,
    I've installed a Oracle 10.1.0.3 RAC on 2 RHEL 3 Update2 machines (folowing the guidlines on otn).
    I've replaced the original kernel with 2.4.21-27.0.2ELorafw1smp provided by oracle.I had to compile a sk98lin module for the second network adapters that I've added to those machines.
    I also have some problems with the ASM modules install..now it's up and runing..
    However ,even at boot time,finding modules dependencies yields OK,there are some unresolved symbols for sk98lin when running a depmod command.
    Randomly,one server freezes,and ,when rebooting,the other one also freezes.I have to shutdown both,start,manualy run commands from /etc/init.d/init.crs script in order to have the RAC daemons back online.
    The provider of the NIC-s also delivers a CD which will compile a sk98lin module,but it requires the kernel sources for that...downloaded the file kernel-2.4.21-27.0.2.ELorafw1.src.rpm and tried to install it ...however,no kernel source is installed...no folder for the sources is created in /usr/src...Did anyone installed those kernel sources?
    If not,any other ideea about where can I get a kernel for firewire concurent connections which also had sources?
    Thanks,
    Sandu

    Hello,
    Just wondering if you've found a solution to your problem. I have a 2 node RAC with Dell Power Edge 2850's and Maxtor 250g shared Firewire with VIA Tech 1394 PCI's on exactly the same configuration: 10g 10.1.0.3 and 2.4.21-27.0.2ELorafw1smp . The entire platform is erratic. It hangs on boot at mounting OCFS. If everything mounts OK it will work for a while between 5 minutes and an hour and then anyone of the nodes will freeze. I have installed CRS and haven't got 10g RDBMS installed yet cauz I can't get the system stable long enough to finish the installation.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Moe.

  • Make dep never works in kernel source

    OK So.. i'm building the latest drm code from git to get Dave Airlie's source code for the R300 since he just dropped 5,000 line of source code out of the R300 tree using the Linus kernel git tree (i love unstable code) and in the DRI building guide, it says to run make dep against the kernel.
    So I go into the root of the kernel source in /usr/src (i know you should build kernels in the home directory) and as root I type in make dep and it says its uncessary at this time. Well... when would be a good time to run make dep? (lol!!)
    http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Buildin … 5ae2efe516
    ^ Unless make dep is actually unecessary. If it is uncessary, i'll contact TimoJyrinki and tell him about it.
    Thank you for all your help.
    P.S. Please don't drop i686 support for 2 or 3 months because I'm getting an AMD64 processor really soon! ahaha.

    I run make && make modules_install (w/ clean when recompiling) as thats how I did it back when i used gentoo.
    I have my kernel compiled and installed and everything. so thats not an issue at all. (And only 1.1 MB)
    So if make dep is depreciated, whats the new command for make dep? I just want DRM working with airlied's new code for the r300 with the new kernel.
    Here is where I am right now:
    Mesa from git (r300) with heavy optimization flags (including -march=athlon=xp -fomit-frame-pointer- -s -O3)
    Custom kernel with GZIP compression of 1.1 MB installed, up and running
    To do:
    DRM via git running on custom kernel
    I recommend not testing what I am trying to do on a production environment.
    Thanks.
    P.S. I edited the CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS for the drm code as well and made it very optimized for my system.

  • Compile multiple source files

    sorry, this is maybe a newbie question.
    but iI have a problem compiling an application that use multiple sources files
    for exemple
    the class A is in the file 1
    the class B is in the file 2
    class A uses an instance of the class B
    class B uses an instance of the class A
    so i'm unable to compile these files coz each one tells me he doesn't know about the other
    Is there a way to define prototypes of class or fonctions before their use like in C/C++?
    Or is there another way i didn"t pay attention
    thanks all

    This is a minimal explanation of packages. For a full explanation of packages and how to compile and run Java programs, see this page:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/tooldocs/tools.html
    and read the Setting the Classpath and the How Classes are Found topics.
    Assume that your programs are part of a package named myapp, which is specified by this first line in each source file:
    package myapp;
    Also assume that directory (C:\java\work\) is listed in the CLASSPATH list of directories.
    Also assume that all your source files reside in this directory structure: C:\java\work\myapp\
    Then a statement to compile your source file named aProgram.java is:
    C:\java\work\>javac myapp\aProgram.java
    And a statement to run the program is:
    java myapp.aProgram
    (This can be issued from any directory, as Java will search for the program, starting the search from the classpath directories.)
    Explanation:
    Compiling
    A class is in a package if there is a package statement at the top of the class.
    The source file needs to be in a subdirectory structure. The subdirectory structure must match the package statement. The top subdirectory must be in the classpath directory.
    So, you generate a directory structure C:\java\work\myapp\ which is the [classpath directory + the package subdirectory structure], and place aProgram.java in it.
    Then from the classpath directory (C:\java\work\) use the command: javac myapp\aProgram.java
    Running
    Compiling creates a file, aProgram.class in the myapp directory.
    (The following is where people tend to get lost.)
    The correct name now, as far as java is concerned, is the combination of package name and class name: myapp.aProgram (note I omit the .class) If you don't use this name, java will complain that it can't find the class.
    To run a class that's NOT part of a package, you use the command: java SomeFile (assuming that SomeFile.class is in a directory that's listed in the classpath)
    To run a class that IS part of a package, you use the command java myapp.aProgram (Note that this is analogous to the command for a class not in a package, you just use the fully qualified name)

  • Preferred way to compile kernel?

    After the discussion here:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=4057&start=30
    I'm wondering which way most people use for compiling their kernel. I've used /usr/src because its simpler and makes me feel more in control.  Having an Arch package for the custom kernel has no real value, according to apeiro.  Plus, using /usr/src has the kernel headers in place automatically, useful for programs that need it. (This offset by the fact that the kernel package copies the necessary files into place anyway). However, using ABS has the advantage of automating a lot of the task using Arch systems, rather than, for example, a custom shell script. (I'm trying an ABS version right now, for comparison).
    Both methods are described in the wiki. I'm going to be cleaning up and expanding both shortly.
    I'm asking this question in order to semi-standardize the process. Some people might say that the Arch philosophy is "There is more than one way to do everything", but I believe we could also append "but there is a best way to do it and Arch suggests that way". Now I want to find out which way is best in this case.
    I'd be most interested in "I use xyz method because... [valid reason]" statements, rather than just "I use xyz".
    Dusty

    The 'abs' way was basically my idea - or at least the first wiki entry about it, I don't know if anyone tried it that way before. I thougt it could be a nice automatism, to have a proper kernel configuration once, tweak the PGKBUILD file, and after all is set up, all I had to change was the version number of the package/kernel source or change the config, and run makepkg then. I once made it switching from kernel24 to 26, using my own config. It worked fine. So, I thought it could be helpfull writing it to the wiki.
    But this idea has some disadvantages, too. F.e., if you compile a minor upgrade, you may construct a modules mess, as a lot of files are already existing. Therefore, all cases must be thoroughly considered and configurated. Kernel addicts would prefer to patch the kernel instead of fully refetch the source.
    After playing around with the idea for a while, I decided the work of configurating all possible eventuallities in compiling kernels by using abs was to difficult. Using the standard procedures seemed straight and easy to me.
    So I removed my 'arch way' section in the kernel compiling wiki. Nevertheless, another user started an abs kernel wiki, redevelopping and enhancing my idea.
    The idea is still attractive.

  • Compiling and Installing Compiled Kernel

    Hi everyone, today i followed the "Kernel Compilation From Source" (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … rom_Source) ArchWiki to compile a kernel downloaded from kernel.org. And i use the second method to compile and install with makepkg.
    When the compilation is done, it can't be installed because the name of the file.
    I know i must specify a new name for the new linux image and the System.map to have two or more kernels installed. But "where" in the PKGBUILD i must change the name of the files???
    I'm using the PKGBUILD from the wiki:
    pkgname=kernel26-my
    basekernel=2.6.32.8
    pkgver=2.6.32.8
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="The Linux Kernel and modules"
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    license=('GPL')
    url="http://www.kernel.org"
    depends=('module-init-tools' 'mkinitcpio')
    provides=(kernel26)
    install=kernel26.install
    build() {
    LOCAL_VERSION="$(grep "CONFIG_LOCALVERSION=" $startdir/.config | sed 's/.*"\(.*\)"/\1/')"
    cd ..
    make || return 1
    mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/{lib/modules,boot}
    make INSTALL_MOD_PATH=$startdir/pkg modules_install || return 1
    # There's no separation of firmware depending on kernel version -
    # comment this line if you intend on using the built kernel exclusively,
    # otherwise there'll be file conflicts with the existing kernel
    rm -rf $startdir/pkg/lib/firmware
    install -Dm644 "System.map" "$startdir/pkg/boot/System.map26$LOCAL_VERSION"
    install -Dm644 "arch/x86/boot/bzImage" "$startdir/pkg/boot/vmlinuz26$LOCAL_VERSION"
    # Change the version strings in kernel26.install
    sed -i \
    -e "s/KERNEL_VERSION=.*/KERNEL_VERSION=\"$basekernel\"/" \
    -e "s/LOCAL_VERSION=.*/LOCAL_VERSION=\"$LOCAL_VERSION\"/" \
    $startdir/kernel26.install
    And also the kernel26.install
    KERNEL_VERSION="2.6.32.8"
    LOCAL_VERSION="-MINE"
    post_install () {
    echo ">>> Updating module dependencies..."
    /sbin/depmod -A -v ${KERNEL_VERSION}${LOCAL_VERSION}
    echo ">>> Creating initial ramdisk..."
    mkinitcpio -k "${KERNEL_VERSION}${LOCAL_VERSION}" -g "/boot/kernel26${LOCAL_VERSION}.img"
    post_upgrade() {
    echo ">>> Updating module dependencies..."
    /sbin/depmod -A -v ${KERNEL_VERSION}${LOCAL_VERSION}
    echo ">>> Creating initial ramdisk..."
    mkinitcpio -k "${KERNEL_VERSION}${LOCAL_VERSION}" -g "/boot/kernel26${LOCAL_VERSION}.img"
    Thanks in advance.

    When installing the kernel there is some problem when the "mkinitcpio" is running: sd_mod error.
    I can install and boot the kernel afterwards but when i get to kdm, the keyboard and the touchpad/mouse doesn't work.
    I double checked the .config file and i have enabled the keyboard and the mouse options.
    What can i do?
    Thanks...

  • [Solved] Apps compiled from source never work and a security question

    Gentlemen,
    I'm a Linux noob but in spite of that I managed to install Archlinux thanks to a fine How To Wiki.
    1. I have a question regarding compiling from source in Arch - does it differ from other linuxdistros?
    With other distros I normally install in /usr/local and that has worked flawless.
    Take Pacman for instance: although I can see there is this Opera app available in the repo (via arch's home page -> search package), the 'pacman -S opera' tells me the app doesn't exist.
    I've tried to download and install it from source following Opera's own 'how to' but the app fails to start, after a successful installation.
    Same goes with other apps such as f-prot antivirus.
    Did I miss something important here?
    2. I installed Arch over FTP. How safe is it, considering I'm not behind a router and the iptables/firestarter was only installed after xfce4 was installed. What about open ports and such? I know there aren't many services enabled/listening but I noticed couple of daemons such as portmap being active during the installation process.
    Thanks

    kumico wrote:
    you can add /usr/local to the path in /etc/profile to make it global or in your ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile to make it available to your user session.
    a pkgbuild is pretty simple once you get used to it,
    you may be put off by packaging standards, you can ignore them, they are only for people intending to share
    with other via the AUR for example.
    you can copy one of the existign ones, either the prototypes or jsut anyone from the aur,
    then change stuff you fidn necessary, like pkgname, pkgver, etc.
    and add the same build commands you'd use otherwise to the build()
    and usualy for a make install, just add DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg etc.,... just practice you'll get the hang of it very quickly
    Hi Kumico, thanks for the tip.
    Or I could try using Arch's default paths as long as the applications don't mind. But it's nice to have an alternative solution should any trouble arise.
    Regarding pkgbuild, I'll probably start to use it when I feel more comfy with the Arch environment itself.
    Using the terminal to perform...well, just about everything, rather than having a nice gui isn't actually bad, but there sure is a transition for a newbie to adapt to.

  • Kernel sources

    hey people,
    Is it possible that I can get the kernel source tree which has been used to build the kernel26-scsi kernel? I have to install a small program which requires this... (cisco vpn client)
    see: http://www.ic.uva.nl/uvavpn/object.cfm/ … nload=true
    page 23 last paragraph it says: You must use the same copy of the kernel source that was used to build the kernel you are running.
    Now I don.t have this, and compilation of the vpn client fails because of this.
    Anyways, possible solution is to compile my own kernel. I have been compiling kernels for a long time on slackware, but the kernel26-scsi is far superior to the ones I.ve built, haha... so is it possible to see what options have been "Y" and "N" and "M" on the kernel26-scsi version that is shipped? that would help me build a better kernel!
    thanks
    rogier

    my problem was more serious than I thought... had to patch the Cisco code, and then edit it by hand again... it was not the kernels fault
    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … perpage=15
    thanks anyways...
