NewInstance & constructor of base class

When I instantiate a sub class directly (using new), the code in the constructor method of both base and sub classes run.
When I instantiate using java.lang.reflect.Constructor.newInstance, only the sub class's constructor method is invoked. Is there a way to force running the constructor method of the base class as well?
Thanks & Regards.

when I tried to build a simple code to show the problem, I realised that the problem is somewhere else - Still not solvable by me - Please help.
Irrespective of whether new or Constructor.newInstance -
The constructor method with appropriate signature is invoked from child class.
The constructor method without any arguments is invoked from parent class. - This is the reason for my original problem.
In the attached code, the variable xyz is not getting assigned proper value (from the argument a).
public class Mainer {
   public static void main(String args[]) throws ClassNotFoundException, NoSuchMethodException, InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException, IllegalArgumentException, java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException
       int inArg = 5;
       System.out.println("With new");
       ChldClass chld1 = new ChldClass(inArg);
       chld1.m1();
       System.out.println("With Constructor.newInstance");
       java.lang.reflect.Constructor ArgsConstructor;
       Class[] argsClass = new Class[] {int.class};
       Class chld2Class = Class.forName("ChldClass");
       ArgsConstructor = chld2Class.getConstructor(argsClass);
       Object[] argsObject = new Object[] {5};
       ChldClass chld2 = (ChldClass)ArgsConstructor.newInstance(argsObject);
       chld2.m1();
class PrntClass
    int xyz;
        public PrntClass(int a)
            xyz = a;
            System.out.println("Int Arg Constructor within Parent Class <<<" + xyz + ">>>");
        public PrntClass()
            System.out.println("Default Constructor within Parent Class");
     public void m1()
          System.out.println("M1 of Parent Class");
class ChldClass extends PrntClass
    public ChldClass(int a)
        System.out.println("Int Arg Constructor within Child");
     public void m1()
          System.out.println("Value of xyz "+xyz);
     public void m2()
          System.out.println("M2 of ChldClass");
The result displayed:
With new
Default Constructor within Parent Class
Int Arg Constructor within Child
Value of xyz 0
With Constructor.newInstance
Default Constructor within Parent Class
Int Arg Constructor within Child
Value of xyz 0

  • 12.4 beta: private copy constructor in base class required to be called from temporary reference when -g option used

    Hi,
    We've got an abstract base class (StringBase) which various types of strings inherit from. The copy constructor for this base class is private, since we don't want to allow copying when this class shouldn't be directly instantiated. A number of our methods take specify the base class as a reference, but take a derived class temporary as a default argument (see code appended).
    This worked fine in 12.3, but in 12.4 beta, this now says:
       Error: StringBase::StringBase(const StringBase&) is not accessible from __dflt_argA().
    This works fine in clang and gcc, and indeed, this GNU document says it was a bug which was fixed in gcc 4.3.0:
        Copy constructor access check while initializing a reference
    which references http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/cwg_defects.html#391
    It only appears to error when the "-g" option is used, however, which doesn't seem right, and compiles fine if the "-g" option is removed, which makes me think it's a bug. Presumably the optimizer is eliding the copy when not using -g, but it's left in for debug mode, causing the compile error?
    Many thanks,
    Jonathan.

    Thanks for reporting the problem!
    This looks like a compiler bug, I think an artifact of creating a helper function for the debugger for the default argument.
    I have filed bug 18505648 for you.

    Thanks for your help with this problem. Now I have another problem that I am having a hard time figuring out. My program is using inheritance and polymorphism. I trying to use only one version of methods in the superclass points which extends the shapes class which is the abstract superclass vs. repeating the implementation of the methods (move, show, etc.) in each of the subclasses. The error I am getting is this "declare the class abstract, or implement abstract member 'Point Shapes.move()'. As you see, move is declared abstract and of type point in the Shapes superclass and it's behavior is implemented in the subclass Points extending Shapes. The other subclasses, circle, rectangle and lines will invoke the move method from Points and return a new point object. Why I am I getting the error to declare or implement move when the implementation is in Point?
    Below is code, please help?

  • Set fields of derived class in base class constructor via reflection?

    Does the Java Language Specification explicitly allow setting of fields of a derived class from within the base class' constructor via reflection? The following test case runs green, but I would really like to know if this Java code is compatible among different VM implementations.
    Many thanks for your feedback!
    Norman
    public class DerivedClassReflectionWorksInBaseClassConstructorTest extends TestCase {
    abstract static class A {
        A() {
            try {
                getClass().getDeclaredField("x").setInt(this, 42);
            } catch (Exception e) {
                throw new RuntimeException(e);
    static class B extends A {
        int x;
        B() {
        B(int x) {
            this.x = x;
    public void testThatItWorks() {
        assertEquals(42, new B().x);
        assertEquals(99, new B(99).x);

    why not just put a method in the superclass that the subclasses can call to initialize the subclass member variable?In derived classes (which are plug-ins), clients can use a field annotation which provides some parameter metadata such as validators and the default value. The framework must set the default value of fields, before the class' initializer or constructors are called. If the framework would do this after derived class' initializer or constructors are called, they would be overwritten:
    Framework:
    public abstract class Operator {
        public abstract void initialize();
    }Plug-In:
    public class SomeOperator extends Operator {
        @Parameter(defaultValue="42", interval="[0,100)")
        double threshold;
        @Parameter(defaultValue="C", valueSet="A,B,C")
        String mode;
        public void setThreshold(double threshold) {this.threshold = threshold;}
        public void setMode(String mode) {this.mode = mode;}
        // called by the framework after default values have been set
        public void initialize() {
    }On the other hand, the default values and other metadata are also used to create GUIs and XML I/O for the derived operator class, without having it instantiated. So we cannot use the initial instance field values for that, because we don't have an instance.

    tim

    First off, unlike regular classes, inner classes can be declared public, private, protected, and default.
    Secondly, why are you using the JTextArea to display an image, why not use a JLabel, which takes an Image object as its constructor.
    Thirdly, when you drew your image you did not give it a width and height
    g.drawImage(img, 0,0, img.getWidth(null), img.getHeight(null), null);
    otherwise it will make your image 1 X 1 pixels. not big enough to see.

  • Base class

    Hi ,
    What will happen if I have a derived class default constructor which does not call the base class constructor as below?
    Will this cause any issues?
    Thanks,
    public class Base{
    private String st = null;
    public Base (){}
    public Base(String str){
    st = str;
    public class Derived extends Base{
    public Derived(){}
    }

    What will happen if I have a derived class
    default constructor which does not call the
    base class constructor as below?Another hint: who says the derived class constructor does not call a base class constructor? One very good way to learn about what is happening is to output messages in your constructors. Add the following line to your base class default constructor:
    System.out.println("Base default constructor");
    Then create an object of your derived class and see what happens.
    Will this cause any issues? Why even bother thinking about it? If you always call a base class constructor from your derived class constructors, then you don't have to worry.

  • JUnit test fixture where constructor of base object throws exception

    I'm trying to construct a test case which requires an object whose constructor currently throws and exception (it tries to make a connection which isn't currently available).
    Now normally the trick would be to construct a test fixture class which extends the base class and returns the stuff I want. The trouble is I can't cope with an exception in in super constructor. Is there any way out of this, short of refactoring the offending base class?

    Just use the no-arg constructor of RootRenderingContext, and all should be defaulted appropriately.

  • Accessing private field of Derived object in Base class

    Hi,
    I have this piece of code I wrote a while ago to test something. The issue is accessing a private field of Base class in Base but of a Derived object.
    Here is the code:
    class Base
         private int x;
         public int getX()
              return x;
         public int getX(Derived d)
              // return d.x;
              return ((Base) d).x;
    }The commented code does not work but casting d to Base does.
    Can someone please explain the reasoning for this.
    Forgot to mention that the compilation error is that x has private access in Base.
    Thank you.

    As I understand the explanation says that you can access any private member within the code of the class that encloses the private member. So in this case x is the private member and the line of code (return d.x) is in Base which encloses the private member. Does it have to do with the fact that the Derived class does not in fact inherit the private members of Base?
    >
    It has to do with the entire quote from the spec
    >
    A private class member or constructor is accessible only within the body of the top level class (§7.6) that encloses the declaration of the member or constructor. It is not inherited by subclasses
    >
    Your code is
    public int getX(Derived d)
              // return d.x;
              return ((Base) d).x;
         }The 'Derived' class is NOT 'the top level class that encloses the declaration of the member'. It does NOT inherit 'x' which is a private member of 'Base'. As far as the 'Derived' class is concerned 'x' does not exist.
    >
    If outside Base code I have Derived d = new Derived() and I call d.getX() then isn't that like calling d.x in myX()?
    >
    How is that the same? 'Base' owns 'x' and can do whatever it wants with it. 'Derived' has no knowledge of 'x' and CAN NOT access it.

  • SW6U2 (C++) wrong code with empty base class

    Consider this program:
    #include <assert.h>
    #include <new>
    struct Base1
    int i;
    struct Base2
    Base2()
    struct Derived : public Base1, public Base2
    int main( int, char** )
    int buf[2] = { 0x7F7F7F7F, 0x7F7F7F7F };
    assert( sizeof( Derived ) == 4 );
    new (buf) Derived;
    assert( buf[1] == 0x7F7F7F7F ); // <- failure
    The second assert fails, because the second (empty) base class Base2 is placed at offset 4 of Derived. But when the custom Base2 constructor runs it makes implicit something like
    memset( this, 0, sizeof( Base2) );
    sizeof( empty class ) is 1 and the offset of Base2 is 4. Effect is that the constructor writes to memory that is not owned by the whole object.
    This can produce some subtile memory errors.

    p.s. What is the right way to submit and view bugs for this C++ compiler?

    The forum posting software eats some C++ code. To get all the code displayed, you must use "code" brackets, and leave a space after each "<" and before each ">".
    I assume your two include statements are these:#include < assert.h >
    #include < new > and that the rest of the code displayed correctly.
    Under those assumptions, I cannot duplicate the bug using the initial release of C++ 5.3, nor with the latest patch. Please be sure the code you post actually shows the problem, and use the "preview" button to see that the code displays correctly.
    If you still see the bug with the code you posted, please run this command
    CC -V -c foobar.cc
    and tell me what output you get. The file foobar.cc does not need to exist.

  • Getting Private Constructor of a Class

    Hello all,
    Is there any way to get the private constructor as we get the public constructors using Class.getConstructors() ?
    getConstructors() method is not returning the private constructors, but I need the info about the private constructors also....so if it is possible, please let me know...
    Thanks

    I know, however it's also impossible to invoke private methods but, using reflection, You can.That's a complete different thing. If the private method is not static, it is invoked on the current instance.
    Is it also possible to use private constructors in the same way.
    The problem I'm facing is to create a new instance of a class which extends another class and I need to use a private constructor of the superclass (I've no sources of that superclass).First, the Constructor of a class has to invoke a Constructor of a superclass as the first operation (either implicitely invoking an empty constructor or explicitely). There is no way to do any other operation before that. Second, a reflectively fetched Constructor instance always only can create instances of the class it is defined at (using newInstance()). So, yes, you could get access to a private Constructor. With that, you may be able to create a new instance of the class it is defined for. But that's about it.

  • How to extends base class???

    Hi here I want to extend GoogleApiKeyStore. I am sure that this class is availabe, because when I  writing to import this class flash showing this classname in hint dialogue box. but when i make object of mykey in my document class then it shows error: The definition of base class GoogleApiKeyStore was not found.
    package code {
              import be.boulevart.google.apicore.GoogleApiKeyStore
              public class mykey extends GoogleApiKeyStore{
                        public static const API_KEY : String = "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"

    download and save the class to make it local.

  • Base Class vs Class in the linkage panel

    I have 2 dozen movie clips in the libarary that are all the same structure, but with different content, and I wanted to write a single class that would work for all of them. Popping this in as the base class worked great until I wanted to pass in some arguments to the constructor. Suddenly, it seems I have to write a "shell" class for each asset that contains nothing but super(arg1,arg2) in its constructor (all 24 of them - ugh!). This ends up being really clunky. Is there any way around it?
    Also - in discussing this with a colleague, an issue came up about the exact relationship between the items in the Class and Base Class fields in the linakge panel for a library asset. What exactly is therelationship? Does the class always extend the base class, or is there something else going on?

    undo whatever you did that caused that problem.  you probably assigned a class name that matched one of your base classes.

    If you have no constructor you cant instanciate (I know i just murdered that spelling) the object.
    Malflche thisHereThingie = new Malflche()assuming that you want to run that class by itself you will need a main method that has the preceeding code in it. If you are running it from another class you need to instanciate it... but anyway at the very least for a constructor you need.
    public Malflche(){

  • Initialize/set a base class from a another base class instance

    Hi,
    How can I initialize/set a base class from a another base class instance? I do not want to do a copy of it.
    It would look something like:
    class A {...}
    class B extends A
        B(A a)
            // super = a;
        setA(A a)
            // super = a;
    }Thank you.

    Thanks Winton. It is what I did first but A has lots of methods and if methods are later added to A, I will have to edit B again. For those two reasons, I wanted to use inheritance. The part I was not sure with was the way to initialize B's base (A).You pays your money and you takes your choice. One way (this way) you have to provide forwarders; the other way (inheritance) you have to provide constructors (and if A has a lot of em, you may be writing quite a few).
    Ask yourself this question: is every B also an A? No exceptions. Ever.
    If the answer is 'yes', then inheritance is probably the best way to go.
    However, if there is even the remotest chance that an instance of B should not exhibit 100% of the behaviour of A, now or in the future, then the wrapper style is probably what you want.
    Another great advantage of the wrapper style is that methods can be added to A without affecting the API for B (unless you want to).

    PS: If your Class A has a constructor or constructors that take a pile of parameters, you might also want to look at the Builder pattern. However, that's not really what we're talking about here, and it should probably be implemented on A anyway.
