NFS install of Solaris via Linux?

Hi all!
I know it can be easy done from one Sun comp to another... Can anyone guide me where to go and where to look for such info? Has anyone done before?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.
Max G.

It is easy to do from most Unix implementations. In theory, you could
even do it from other OSes.
The services usually needed are:
reverse-ARP (rarpd) -- resolves IP address given a MAC address
tftpboot -- downloads boot loader
bootparams or DHCP -- gives various info on who the server(s) are
NFS -- network file service
The details are described starting with the boot(1m) man
page. Also, DHCP may not be possible on older versions of SPARC
hardware due to the age of the boot firmware which may not implement
it.
Some description is in the Solaris installation docs on http://docs.sun.com
and there is a good discussion on the entire boot process in the
Sun BluePrints book on JumpStart http://www.sun.com/blueprints

  • Installing Solaris via network

    A few days ago I have got an old Sun server (Netra 1125).
    I am fairly new to Sun hardware and I wonder if there is a way to install Solaris via serial cable and a TCP/IP network (I don't have a cdrom and I don't have vga or floppies).
    I have a Linux machine nearby. Can I use BOOTP or something like that?
    Can anybody point me to some documentation?

    solaris' network install is called "jumpstart"
    searching for "solaris jumpstart linux" on google provides some pages, in particular is this one that is pretty old (references sunos4) but should work... http://www.unixpeople.com/HOWTO/jumpstart_on_linux.html

  • How can i install oracle 10g on linux cluster

    Dear all:
    please advice How can i install oracle 10g on linux cluster service ..
    thanks ,,

    Without RAC, you can only have one instance manage the database. One instance = one set of processes communicating via IPC.
    Unless you know of a way to have processes use memory-based IPC across nodes, you need to pick a node and install & run the database software on that node.

  • Error while installing developer 10g on linux suse 10.0

    Hi All,
    This error appears while installing developer 10g on linux suse 10.0
    http://img179.imageshack.us/my.php?image=errorso9.png

    Try locate (using find command for example) the libjvm.so file (I assume that is located somewhere under $ORACLE_HOME (probably jdk or jre directory)). If you locate the path where this library resides, try to add that path to $LD_LIBRARY_PATH enviroment variable.
    Use copy&paste method (for error message) rather than link to image.
    It is much quicker operation and it may help to other people because they be able to find this thread via search engine.

  • HP CM1312MPF drivers don't work via Windows 7 but works fine via Linux dual booting

    HP CM1312MPF drivers don't seem work using Windows 7 (64-bit) .  Original HP drivers CD now lost. Current drivers were downloaded from HP's website. (This webpage has a number of drivers and most 64-bit ones have been tried. Prior to my Windows re-install, the machine printed and scanned satifactoralily in Windows 7. One day this O/S refused to boot and had to be fully re-installed. The reinstall has been tried on both a SSD and on a HDD. (I have 3 x HDDs and 1 x SSD in this Desktop system. and I dual boot Windows7 and Linux Mint with data on its own HDD.) No attempt has yet been made to scan after this Windows re-install, as I have a separate photo scanner.  I mainly wish on the to print on CM1312MPF, however it did scan perfectly well prior to the reinstall of Windows. THE CM1312MPF PRINTS FINE VIA THE SAME USB OUTPUT LEAD (AND POWERED HUB) AS VIA LINUX MINT 17 (PETRA)  when I dual boot and without any PHYSICAL CHANGES between changing O/Ss. It must be a driver problem, surely, mustn't it? I look forward to your help. John_of_Penrith

    You can also disable that windows wireless "Critter" from device manager and it shouldn't ever again show-up in your adapter list. Thanks for the lesson. I too have wondered about the windows virtual adapter and what it's for. I never had it show-up in my adapters though in the network and sharing center. That was strange that it happened to you. I also occasionally just go to device manager and reload the adapter that came with laptop-not the windows one. It
    seems to keep it running fairly well since there have been no new drivers for it. I think it was an experiment or something called the DW1501 Wireless half-mini n that came with my Dell Inspiron N7010 laptop. I don't particularly like it as compared to the other wireless adapters in my home, this thing is slow on downloads, but I don't want to bother to get a new adapter.
    Anyhow thanks for the interesting lesson.

  • Can´t install cd recorder in linux... help please, newbie

    hi,
    is there any problem with via chipsets and cd recorders in linux??
    I´ve been trying to install a linux distro in my pc ( see end of post for specs), but i haven´t succeded in installing my cd recorder. I´ve tryed RedHat 8.0 and Mandrake 9.0. In both of them i can´t boot if i have the cd recorder connected... it crashes when detecting the drive. I know the recorder works, i've got friends who use it ok with linux.
    Currently i have installed Mandrake 9.0 with the cd recorder disconnected. I noticed my all my friends with linux have intel machines, and they don´t have to do anything, it boots correctly and install without any problem. So i started thinking it might be a chipset support problem. I got to the viaarena page where i found a "manual" for installing cd recorder in linux. I tried to do that but i keep getting into problems... i'm new to linux and i don´t know much so that might be the real problem here :o
    i'll try to explain my doubts, what i did and what problems i run into.... if someone would be nice to explain me how to solve them, in a detailed way
    I followed the "readme" instructions for installing a recorder after the Mandrake 8.2 is installed ( it didn´t have any for 9.0 ). I edited the modules.conf and lilo.conf files as i should. But i did run into some doubts: the modules.conf file didn´t have any ide section like the readme said  ( it had no sections at all) so i added the two lines at the bottom of the files. In lilo.conf i had to delete the append that already existed to add the hdd=ide-scsi line.
    I shutdown the pc, connect the recorder and start it again. The os detects all drives but crashes again after doing checking the modules dependencies...
    Did i do something wrong when editing the files?
    And i didn´t quite understand  all the "readme", in order to install the recorder do i also have to the "ide-scsi" to my cdrom and dvd drives, or only to my recorder??
    In linux does the recorder have to be in a specific ide ( master/slave ) position in order to be installed?
    and please tell me that it has nothing to do with my board and that it is just me doing something wrong..
    thanks for any help, and sorry for the long post but i thought i´d better explain all
    my pc specs:
    AMD XP1800+

    You will need to add that line back in if you want it to work as a recorder once you get it to boot. CD burners in linux use scsi emulation. You may also need to add a similar line from your CD reader too as most burning software for linux uses scsi emulation for that as well.
    I shutdown the pc, connect the recorder and start it again. The os detects all drives but crashes again after doing checking the modules dependencies...
    I didn't have to add anything in modules.conf to get mine working. Normally if it is crashing during modules.conf it means it can't find the module. Do you know which module it is looking for? What did you add to modules.conf?
    Did i do something wrong when editing the files? Maybe. What did you change in them?

    In linux does the recorder have to be in a specific ide ( master/slave ) position in order to be installed?No. But it may help if the CDROM and burner were on the same port. Sometimes can have a conflict with DVDs.

    It has nothing to do with your board. If it works in windows it should work fine (or better) in linux.

  • 10.7 solaris-11i linux

    Where can i find some information of upgrading
    from 10.7 solaris-11i linux
    - steps involved it
    q:
    - Do i build 10.7 in linux and then do a upgrade
    or
    - build upgrade in unix and then import/export to linux
    any points will be helpful
    srini

    I will first give a very high level answer and if you need more detail - just ask away.
    First Need to lay down upgrade environment with rapid install - this would include new $APPL_TOP, $806_ORACLE_HOME,$8174_ORACLE_HOME,$IAS_ORACLE_HOME and $COMMON_TOP. This would be in the linux side. Remember rapid install itself has patches and there is a metalink note on the pre-upgrade patches for the apptlop during the upgrade note 112659.1.
    Search metalink new patch search for rapid install and find those patches - very important for linux - so of the rapid install versions have issues, the last patch set fixed our problems.
    Once this is prepared (upgrade not started) then I used imp/exp to migrate the database and I reorg'd the database at the same time for this - Metalink document 204015.1 was a good source for this. Verses the sysadmin documentation. Then once the database is imported, then begin the upgrade process - we also created a 10.7 on solaris pre-upgrade clone, that is we cloned production to a temporary 10.7 environment, did the pre-upgrade steps up until the database migration, then did the imp/exp , then did the upgrade -
    Hope that makes sense, there could be other ways and even different twists with the steps we did. I hope it makes sense, I am not that good in emails and notes, The reason we did the pre-upgrade steps on a clone was so that the current production could serve as a back up in case of any un-anticipated problems happened during the upgrade and as well for the testing process that you go through.

    Chris

    Hi,
    I'm currently working with Analytics on UNIX
    (Solaris) and perform actions similar to yourself:
    1. Develop RPD in Windows (Analytics Admin Tool)
    2. Post to server (here I use an S/FTP-emulation tool such as WinSCP/Core
    FTP), this handles any conversion of the file needed, i.e. to UNIX version.
    3. Start Analytics services.
    In your case :- Open Solaris server via ftp and copy your Solaris rpd in window system then again try to login linux via ftp paste the related folder. FTP software like (Winscp software am using)
    There is no much complex in this migration.
    Hope this help's

  • Installing gcc solaris 8 sparc

    Please help - I'm going nuts! I've installed the software via pkgadd, verified it's all where it should be. Altered the path manually on the command line (I'm unsure how/where to permanently change the path), however I'm still getting the errors:
    checking for gcc... no
    checking for cc... no
    configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH
    Please help as I'm going insane! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
    Newbie Sys Admin (chucked in the deep end!)

    Instead of a pkgadd for gcc, you may want to try compiling it for the version and platform of Solaris you need to use it for.
    Obtain the *.gz version of gcc and unzip it. (If you obtained the application that has "local" somewhere in the name, this is the pkgadd version). Next you will need to untar it (should have *.tar on the end). After its been untar'd, there should be a "configure" script... run it. After that, you will need to run "make", and then follow with "make install".
    I experiences problems using pkg'd versions of certain types of software. Compiling them has worked out better!
    I haven't compiled gcc in a long time, however, I believe my instructions are correct. To find out what you need to do, check the "README" file in the directory after you un-tar the *.tar file.

  • NFS Errors on Solaris 2.6 and 7 Systems running as a clear case client

    I read in a Rational Document that When Sun fixed defect #4271267 they introduced a problem that causes EAGAIN to be returned to fsync() andclose() system calls. The EAGAIN defect is being tracked by Sun as defect #4349744 and it is a problem for NFS clients running Solaris2.6, 7, and 8.
    Sun has released a patch for this on Solaris 8(108727-06 or later). Does anyone know, What are the Patches(Patch ID Numbers)to be installed on Solaris 2.6 and Solaris 7 Systems for the Problem when ClearCase Views or Vobs are on NetAPP with Solaris servers.
    I am getting NFS errors and I am not able to view the files, when I try accessing the Vobs from Solaris 2.6,7 systems. The Clear Case Server is on Solaris 8 and the VOBs are stored in Netapp Filer.

    Hi,
    The following program is giving results diferently
    when I am executing using g++ compiler in Solaris
    and Linux.
    Why it is so.
    here is the code:
    #include <stdio.h>
    #include <string.h>
    #include <malloc.h>
    #include <stdlib.h>
    int main( void )
    size_t size;
    char *buf;
    if ( ( buf = (char *)malloc(10 *sizeof(char))) == NULL)
    exit (1);
    size = sizeof( buf );The size you get here is the size of buf, which is the size of a pointer, not the size of what buf points to. sizeof(*buf) would give you size of a char, the type (not the object) that buf points to.
    There is no portable way to find out the number of bytes allocated on the heap if you are give only a pointer to the memory. You have to remember the size some other way..
    strcpy(buf, "HelloWorld");A literal string consists of the characters in the string plus a terminating null, all of which are copied by strcpy. You allocated 10 chars for buf, but are writing 11 chars into it. At this point, the program has undefined behavior. Literally anything at all could happen, because you can't predict the effect of writing outside the bounds of allocated memory.
    printf("\n Address is : %u String is : %s size :
    e : %d ", buf, buf,size);
    if (( buf = (char *) realloc(buf, sizeof(20))) == NULL)The "sizeof" operator in this case is returning the size of the type of a literal 20, which is an int. If you want to allocate 20 bytes, you write 20, not sizeof(20).
    exit ( 1);
    *(buf+10) = 'A'; *(buf+11) = 'B'; *(buf+12) == '\0';SInce you can't count on buf having more than 4 bytes at this time, you are writing into unallocated memory, with undefined results.
    printf("\n Address is : %u String is : %s\n", buf, buf);
    free( buf);
    exit( 0 );
    Instead of asking why you get different results on different platforms, you should be asking why the program doesn't crash on all platforms. :-)
    You can avoid these problems with keeping track of allocating memory by using the C++ standard library instead of trying to manage low-level details yourself as in C code.
    The standard string class, for example, extends itself as needed, and ensures that heap memory is freed when the string object is deleted or goes out of scope. You don't need pointers, malloc, free, or sizeof to use C++ strings.
