NFS vs ISCSI for Storage Repositories

Anyone have any good guidance in using NFS vs ISCSI for larger production deployments of OVM 3?
My testing has been pretty positive with NFS but other than the documented "its not as fast as block storage" and the fact that there is no instant clones (no OCFS2), has anyone else contemplated between the two for OVM? If so, what did you choose and why?
Currently we are testing using NFS thats presented from a Solaris HA Cluster servicing a ZFS pool (basically mimicking ZFS 73xx and 74xx appliances) but I don't know how the same setup would perform if the ZFS pool grew to 10TB of running virtual disk images.
Any feedback?
Thanks
Dave

Would you personally recommend against using one giant NFS mount to storage VM disk images?I don't recommend against it, it's just most often the slowest possible storage solution in comparison to other mechanisms. NFS cannot take advantage of any of the OCFS2 reflinking, so guests must be fully copied from the template, which is time consuming. Loop-mounting a disk image on NFS is less efficient than loop-mounting it via iSCSI or directly in the guest. FC-SAN is the usually the most efficient storage, but bonded-10Gbps interfaces for NFS or iSCSI may now be faster. If you have dual-8Gpbs FC HBAs vs dual 1Gbps NICs for NFS/iSCSI, the FC SAN will win.
Essentially, you have to evaluate what your critical success factors are and then make storage decisions based on that. As you have a majority of Windows guests, you need to present the block devices via Oracle VM, so you need to use either virtual disk images (which are the slowest, but easiest to manage) or FC/iSCSI LUNs presented to the guest (which are much faster, but more difficult to manage).

  • NFS and ISCSI using ip hash load balance policy

As i know all these days that the best practice for iscsi is to use single nic and one standby with " route based port id" ButI have seen in a client placethat NFS and iscsi are configured to use"route based ip hash" and multiple nic and it has been working all these days. i can not see that iscsi does multi path there.I was told by the sys admin that it is ok to use that since the both protocol are configured in same storage and it does not make sense to separate it ,his explanation that if we want separate policy then use separate storage that is one for nfs and other for iscsi, i do not buy that, i might be wrong. He pointed his link below saying that you can use ip hash.http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalI....Is it ok to use " route based ip hash for iscsi as on the link?

When you create your uplink port profile you simply use the auto channel command in your config:
    channel-group auto mode on
This will create a static etherchannel when two or more ports are added to the uplink port profile from the same host.  Assuming your upstream switch config is still set to "mode on" for the etherchannel config, there's nothing to change.

  • Use of NFS or iSCSI datastores

    A few queries..
    1. Is it possible to make use of NFS or iSCSI storage as permanent datastores for a EVO:RAIL appliance?
    2. What are the choices for VSAN data protection when creating VMs inside EVO:RAIL?

    >>1. Is it possible to make use of NFS or iSCSI storage as permanent datastores for a EVO:RAIL appliance?
Yes, but they have to be manually configured on each one of the nodes (just like you would have to do on a regular vSphere deployment).
    >>2. What are the choices for VSAN data protection when creating VMs inside EVO:RAIL
Any vSphere solution products (such as VDP) which are supported with vSphere 5.5 and VSAN 1.0 are supported with EVO:RAIL. Same idea applies to 3rd party solution as well as long as they are deemed supported with vSphere 5.5 and VSAN 1.0.

  • Managing files and space in storage repositories

What options are available for moving virtual machine images and resources between storage repositories in OVM 2.2? The documentation does not seem to mention this at all.
As the root repository is nearly full, I have added a second repository. I expect there is little automation here so that I also need to manually move some disk images from the root repo to the new auxiliary repository.
Is there a special procedure I need to be aware of, or can I simply shut down a VM, move the folder and start the VM?
Can multiple disk images belonging to the same VM be distributed across multiple repositories, or must they all reside in the same folder?
    Thanks,
    Roy

    1. Shutdown the VM
    2. Unregister the VM from Oracle VM Manager (but DON'T delete the files)
    3. Manually move the VM directory from one running_pool folder to another.
    4. Discover the VM in Oracle VM Manager
    5. Start the VM
Can multiple disk images belonging to the same VM be distributed across multiple repositories, or must they all reside in the same folder?Oracle VM Manager will only create disk images in the same folder as vm.cfg. Shared disks will be created in the repository that has the most amount of free space available. You can use this to your advantage by creating/discovering shared disks in any repository and attaching them to your guest. Just remember not to attach the same shared disk to multiple guests!

  • Fault Tolerance of NFS and iSCSI

    Hello,
I'm currently designing a new datacenter core environment. In this case there are also nexus 5548 with FEXs involved. On this fex's there are some servers which speak NFS and iSCSI.
While changing the core component there will be a disruption between the servers.
What ks the maximim timeout a NFS or iSCSI protocoll can handle while changing the components. Maybe there will be disruption for a maximimum of 1 sekond.

  • Help on MP for Storage Devices

Hi, I'm starting to use the MP for Storage Devices (Cloud Management Marketplace | Solution Exchange) and it seems really well done. It get lots of information but it seems that the automatic discovery has some problem with object naming.
Just to do an example in my configuration I have mostly ESXi with a NetApp Storage and NFS mounts.
MP for SD seems to discover everything up to the switch ports but it name all my switch as "10" (it's the first octect of the their IP address) and all port 10_Ethernetx/y (the Ethernetx/y is correct but there's not the switch ip/name but the first octect of the ip address).
Does anyone know if there's some way to make it "name" the object in a better way (the full ip address will be a good solution).

No one have tested this and have any suggestion?

    Hi,
There are 2 steps you need to do - move DPM server and move data.
For move DPM server, you need to backup DPM database and restore in new server. Please see steps in following article:
Move the DPM server to a different computer

The article also provided steps to migrate data but the link is broken. Please refer to following 2 articles instead:

  • How can I use iCloud for storage without duplication problems?

I recently set up iCloud to use on my Mac and PC.  With the exception of a single data file that I have stored in the cloud (as a working data file) that I use both on my Mac and PC....I want to use the rest of my 20 gigs of space on iCloud for storage/backup purposes only.  However, I have very little experience with iCloud; and it doesn't seem entirely intuitive to use iCloud.
For example, if I store all of my music and pictures on iCloud, how do I stop Itunes and iphoto from duplicating the results of each music and picture file in those programs?  I ask this question because I have seen iTunes act up way too many times (in other circumstances) when it creates duplicate music files.
Just to be clear, I want everything to remain on my local hard drive.  I only want to use iCloud for storage/backup only.  So, again, how do I stop iTunes and iPhoto from reading music and photo files once I successfully get them on iCloud?  (I am thinking I have to hide the archived files once I get them in iCloud, but unsure about how I go about doing that).  And here's my second question.  To upload my personal music and picture files to iCloud, can I simply drag and drop them into the iCloud drive on my computer and assume they will be successfully uploaded?
My second question seems kind of basic too.  But, once again, iCloud does not seem entirely intuitive to use for a beginner.  For example, I recently purchased some music from the Itunes store.  And while I have it downloaded on my harddrive (like I wanted it)......I don't see it on the iCloud drive (on my computer)....nor do I see it when I log into icloud.com on the web site.  Thanks for any replies.

If you have a Mac signed into your account running iPhoto, you might want to check iPhoto>Preferences>iCloud to make sure Automatic Upload isn't checked.  If it is checked, all new photos added to iPhoto are automatically added to your photo stream.

  • Can i use the time capsule for storage or just backup?

I asked my husband to go and buy a separate harddrive so that we could use to store all of our photos on separately as opposed to the computer (as its full and we cant download any more photos!). He came back with the Time Capsule.
from what i can understand it can only be used for backups and not for direct stoarge - is this correct? Im hoping that i can use it for storage and somehow copy all my photos from my Mac onto the Time Capsule and then we can access them from the network which i just created with the Time Capsule
Or do i need to buy something else?
    appreciate anyones help
    Thanks

It is far from ideal. But it does depend on what you are doing. Are you going to store you iphoto library on the TC then it is not recommended.
    Store files on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

My Windows 7 Professional desktop system hard disk got corrupted and I took the opportunity to install an SSD for a new system disk and reinstall Windows.  The system is up and running on the SSD, with my old system disk now used for storage as it is still readable.  The only Adobe product I have reinstalled so far is Reader XI but I would like to reinstall Elements 8 and Acrobat 9 without taking up more licences as both are also installed on my laptop.  Can you point me to the best way to do this?  - Thanks

If you have the two allotted activations already and one was lost on the hard drive that failed then you need to contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations.

  • [Athlon64] CPU cant see my other HD I want to use for storage

Ok so I have the msi k8n-neo v with 3000+ athlon 64, Im running win xp 32, I had too much problems with win xp 64 ( wasnt running my games well ) ANYHOO... I have a 120 gig sata WD HD, now I have this other HD WD 40gig but its not SATA.  It has windows installed on it already, I just want to use it for extra space maybe a new partition for storage, and I hook it up and my CPU doesnt even see it.  Most cases I cant even boot it up. It goes to my logo screen and stays there.  IF i hit tab I can go to this other menu, but cant make any choices and it scans my hardware.  I even tried running my win XP setup disc but I think its asking for my driver boot disc.  Im just afraid to use it cause I dont want my main HD to lose any data or become corrupt where i have to re-install windows AGAIN for the 6th time in the last two months LMAO.  Anyway I THINK (prolly wrong) that I have the little slave/master doohicky in the wrong spot.  I have tried it in every single spot but I still cant get past my logo screen.  the 40 gigger is hooked up to the MOBO from one IDE cable its not a slave on that cable just one cable from the HD to the MOBO in slot two.  Slot one is occupied by my dvd rom and my cd rom.  Can anyone help me out on this one?  Im still kinda new to all this but learned a hell of a lot in the last year!!!!!!!!

...put the SATA drive in and start it up to make sure it's still working...if it's OK, shut it down...
...remove the jumper from the Western Digital 40GB drive...connect it to the far end of an IDE cable...connect the other end to your motherboard...start your machine...
...after Windows boots click Start > right-click My Computer > Manage > highlight Disk Management in the left pane > see if the 40GB is there > it should be > click the drive in the right pane > Action > All Tasks > Format...after Fomat you may have to go back to Action > All Tasks > Mark Partition As Active...

  • Time Machine no longer recognizes my WD portable drive for storage

The portable drive use to work fine for storage for my time machine. Now the drive does not show in desktop when plugged in. Time machine is directing me to set up but does not recognize any device. Thank you for any help.
    J.

Same exact thing happened to me... Time Machine ceased to recognize external drive - stopped backing up (obviously) then drive would no longer appear on desktop. After multiple reboots, plug/unplug, and cable jiggling - the drive returned to the desktop... Time Machine STILL does not see it. Using Disk Utilities to verify - hopefully repair. Many errors appearing in log! Isn't it a little odd that so many external drives of different models are all failing while using the same program... ?

Are u using material code for assets or its a text based purchase, if material code is there (although non valuated / qty managed) it will still require sloc as system needs to store the qty in stock
