NIC module

Hi,
I'm having trouble figuring out which kernel module (I am using the 2.6.3 kernel) I need to load to get my NIC working. My NIC is made by Aopen and has the model number AON-325. According to the Aopen web page it uses the Realtek 8139 ethernet controller (RTL 8139C).  I noticed there are two modules listed as 8139cp.ko and 8139too.ko, are either of these the proper ones?
Is there a general web resource that lists what kernel modules are need to run different hardware? I imagine I will run into this same problem again when I try and install my printer, digital camera etc...
Finally has anyone written a howto for the HWD - hardware detect for Arch Linux ?
Thanks for the help.

Hi guys,
thxs for the information. I loaded the 8139too module and it seems to work well. I got my adsl connection working finally.
I checked out the /usr/src/linux/Documentation directory and it does not exist.  I think its under /usr/src/linux2.6.3. what are the files I am suppose to look at?
thanks again for the help.

  • [Solved] Default NIC Module?

I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue I'm having with Steam downloads, and I'm thinking it may be my NIC drivers. I have a Intel Gigabit CT, with the latest 3.1.0.2 drivers. I was wondering what drivers or modules Arch was using before I installed the Intel drivers, so I can load them and see if it fixes my issue with Steam downloads.

I'm not in a rush to do so, since the Intel NIC drivers do work, except Steam can't download games. I only need the Intel NIC drivers, so I don't have any reason to use the default kernel ones, unless Steam isn't the problem.

modprobe commands only affect the current running system, they are not persistent across reboots. The drivers provided by the kernel have the same names as the new versions that you installed, so you could have checked the versions with modinfo to determine which ones are "still there".
That's just FYI, no longer relevant because of your drastic actions since. Just reinstall the kernel.
Oh I see, well that explains some things. I took some another drastic step last light, and upgraded my system from ext2 to ext4. Some people were saying that Steam was aggresively writing to the disk, and stressing out fsync, and that using barrier=0 would fix it. Well, it didn't. I upgraded for nothing.
Although with ext4, my system boots up faster, which I guess is a good thing. I heard ext2 is faster then ext4, even with the journal disabled, which is why I chose ext2. My fstab options for ext4 are in my Steam profile, and I still can't download games with Steam. I really don't know what the problem is.

  • Solution - Workaround for latest NIC's not loading

    hey all,
have discovered (with the help of a friend) a workaround for getting new
NIC's working with the ZENworks Imaging boot cd.
have tried posting the solution to coolsolutions but nothing seems to be
happening so thought i would post a message here.
basically a method on manually loading the NIC module and allowing you
to image up or down to a server.
it's not a solution in my mind as you still require manual intervention
but it will at least buy some time while you wait for a newer bootcd.iso
    to come out.
process is a bit big for here, but please email me if you would like a
look and i would be happy to email it through.
and if it works for you, maybe leave a message to let others know if it

  • Kernel upgrade - no module loading

No other way to put it, guys: Arch Linux has just gone completely batshit on me.
I just upgraded to the 2.6.11 kernel, which is now in the Current repo.
However, something seems to have been missed during the update... Because when I boot, my system tells me that finding the module dependencies has failed, hotplug screws up and says that it can't find something (isapnp.map IIRC, or something like that - zoomed by too damn fast and it was too late during boot for dmesg to retrieve), and my modules do not load.
And boy do I mean it when I say I've got no modules... nothing, not even the realtime clock module.
I can't modprobe stuff either. When I do, I get a message saying that the modules dir for kernel 2.6.10 cannot be found.
In other words, it seems that some config file somewhere still says that I'm using kernel 2.6.10, and that's screwing me over completely. So could someone please point me to the config file that gives the kernel modules dir?
As of right now, I'm using a live CD to post here. I'll have to use this until I can get Arch Linux unfucked.
(I ought to post a bug on this... Not registered yet on bugs.archlinux.org though, I'll have to get that done.)
P.S. Don't worry, I'm not angry at the package maintainers... Shit happens, after all.

I had the same problems, new kernel26-scsi, reboot, and a bunch of error messages starting hotplug daemon (line bla error in modules bla file):
    [snipp] ...

No modules where found, only the ones I had in my modules section of rc.conf. Errm. So I loaded my nic module by hand, started network deamon, and did pacman -Sf kernel26-scsi hotplug. Minutes later, I rebooted, and all things where fine - until I fired up gnome, and found out, I could not start it anymore. But gnome 2.1o is another story.

  • True url rewritting

    Hi,
We are migrating for Apache to iPlanet 6.0. Apache has a really nice module called mod_rewrite that enables you to rewrite URL request.. it uses regular expressions to really let you modify and setup complex rewrite sets based on regx conditions. Is there anything in iPlanet 6.0 that is similar to this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Try making a servlet mapped to the /welcome url and use pathInfo to get the path and extract the params from it.

  • Network interface stats

    Hello,
I'm currently in the process of porting some code to solaris, I'm looking for a way to get interface stats from user space.
I have found the structure ifnet in "/usr/include/net/if.h", but what call returns a ifnet struct? I've STFW but I cannot find something that works in userspace.

if you want stats like input pkts drops etc, then you could use the kstat interface
    man -s3KSTAT kstat
you can see the fields available using the kstat command thus
    netstat -c net
you'll get lots of tcp and ip stats but you should also get a segment for your nic

  • Wierd Ethernet Problem!!!!!!!!! [Resolved]

Ok, if someone can figure this one out, I'd be eternally grateful. I can do a clean FTP install (no errors, no problems). The install CD can load my NIC module, get a DHCP lease, and download apps with no problems. However, as soon as I boot into my install (base packages only), the network daemon fails to load. The only error I get in any of my log files is in daemon.log and it says something to the effect of
daemon.log wrote:DHCPCD failed to load because eth0 is not 802.11 or Ethernet compliant
I thought it was a module issue, but I copied the kernel config from the install cd that works
    zcat /proc/config.gz > /mnt/usr/src/kernel-2.6.10/.config
and still get the same results!
    Here's some more info:
    · This error happens when I set rc.conf to:
    rc.conf wrote:eth0="dhcp"
    · If I set a static IP, the daemon loads fine but I cannot ping my router on the same subnet.
    · When set to static IP, I can ping the loopback and my own IP

Are you sure the right module is loaded? Did you background hotplug? If so I'd highly recommend *NOT* doing that as the module may not be loaded at the time the network daemon is called
When using static ip, I did remove the "!" in the ROUTES section (I also modified to fit my subnet - 192.168.1.1): same results.
I did NOT background hotplug, I let the hotplug daemon load the module. I know the 8139too is the correct module becase
    · I've used the same module in other distro's
    · It's the module that the intsall CD uses
Also, an lsmod shows that 8139too is loaded as soon as the boot process finishes.

  • Unable to collect NIC data for reporting with MIB-II module

    Hi all,
Here we have SunMC 3.6.1 set up with almost all the available modules, including the complete "MIB-II Instrumentation" one. We also have the "Performance Reporting Manager" feature, and want to use it to generate a hole bunch of performance reports for our Sun servers.
The problem I am facing is that I try to collect data through the "MIB-II Instrumentation module". I browse into "Interfaces Group", and there I can see all the NICs I have on the system. I would like to record the "If In Octets" and the "If Out Octets" fields. I right-click on these fields, I select the "Attribute Editor", then I click on the "History" Tab, and I choose to save the history on the disk, at each 300 seconds, and the file type is "circular".
Even after waiting for 24 hours, I don't have access to data that should be recorded. If the Performance Report Manager application, when I list the "data availability" for the server where I activated the collect, all I see is the "Kernel Reader" module collects I already activated: I don't see any "MIB-II Instrumentation" module there...
On the "Server details" window, when I go the the "Module management" tab, if I choose "MIB-II Instrumentation" module, it is charged and activated. However, when I click on the "Rules" button, the only ones appearing are the following:
    IF Oper Status (1)   rCompare   -   -   -
    IF Oper Status (2)   rCompare   -   -   -
    IF Oper Status (3)   rCompare   -   -   -
IF Oper Status (4)   rCompare   -   -   -and I find it to be exactly the same for the "MIB-II (Simple)" module... Could it be the reason why I cannot collect the "IF In Octets" and "IF Out Octets" fields?
Is there a way I can collect more relevant statistics about network usage with SunMC, using the "MIB-II Instrumentation" module, or something else within SunMC?
    Thanks in advance!!
    Ben

    Hi Ben,
Is there a way I can collect more relevant statistics
about network usage with SunMC, using the "MIB-II
Instrumentation" module, or something else within
SunMC?It sounds like a general problem with PRM: though if the Data Availability tab shows it's pulling Kernel Reader data every hour, then it should show your MIB-II info as well.
Even then octet counts aren't terribly useful: they're just big numbers that get bigger: you really need to see rates over time to get an idea of what your network is doing.
You could try the SystemMonitor module that's part of PlusPack:
    http://www.halcyoninc.com/products/PlusPack/help/SystemMonitor/HALSolarisSystemAlert-network-h.html
It shows MB/minute rates for each interface. If that's the type of info you need then you can enable those numbers for PRM or Reporter instead.

  • Minor_init failed for module... & unable to configure nics

    Hello,
following the instructions of: "Sun Two-Node Cluster How to Guide"
I successfully installed the "Sun Cluster 3.1U4" on my sun ultra 5 workstations (on the two nodes and on the administrative console), which are all running solaris 10 1/06.
During the installation process I choose the option "configure later" as suggested by the guide.
Before configuring the nodes and proceeding with the steps, I wanted to check the correct installation of the nics. I have three nics plugged in the two nodes and two in the administrative console. One per computer is integrated, the others are three pci 10/100 Ark and two Intel nics.
The fact is that the output of dladm show-link is just hme0 for all the computers, none of the other nics seems to be recognized.
in the output of prtconf I see
pci instance 1 ethernet (drive not attached) ethernet (driver not attached)
    instead with prtconf -D
pci instance 1 ethernet ethernet (driver simba)
this is the output of one of my nodes that has two Ark nics.
I tried with devfsadm -v (as I read in a post) and the output is
    minor_init failed for module /usr/lib/devfsadm/linkmod/SUNW_scmd_link.so
this string also appears at every boot (also when I boot -r)
This last thing I found treated as a problem in "sun java enterprise administration guide":
this is like my situation, but of course I am not running solaris on an x86 system, and I also do not receive "NOTICE NO PCI PROB"
x86 machines running Solaris 10 fail to come up in cluster mode due to changes made for the Solaris boot architecture project. The following error messages are displayed when the machine boots up:
    NOTICE: Cant open /etc/cluster/nodeid
NOTICE: BOOTING IN NON CLUSTER MODE
    NOTICE: NO PCI PROP
    NOTICE: NO PCI PROP

    Cannot open /etc/cluster/ccr/did_instances.
Note: path_to_inst might not be updated. Please boot -r as needed to update.
    Solution Perform these steps:
    1. Add etc/cluster/nodeid to /boot/solaris/filelist.ramdisk.
    2. Enter these commands:
    # bootadm update-archive
    # reboot -- -r
I did not perform the steps indicated as the "solution" for this.
I wait because maybe the scinstall configuration can fix this, doesn't it?
I just want to end my two node cluster config happily and begin to work with it.
    Thanks in advantage,
    Francesco

The primary problem you seem to have is that your network adapters are not recognized. So this is not a Cluster problem. You talk about "three pco 10/100 Ark and two intel nics". The question is, if those cards have a corresponding solaris driver. Since you seem to indicate that prtdiag does report that there is no driver attached, you may be out of luck for the drivers coming with Soalris 10 01/06 you use. Maybe the vendor of those cards offers drivers that need to get installed?
Otherwise I guess you are out of luck using them, without finding a usabel kernel driver.
    For the message
    minor_init failed for module /usr/lib/devfsadm/linkmod/SUNW_scmd_link.so
you see, this is harmless and not your problem. You can ignore it.
This error happens when the scmd_link devfsadm link module is attempted to be
loaded before clustering has started. It is a harmless situation.

  • More text options in Print Module

It's frustrating to be able to do just about everything in LR - but not quite.  I'd like more text options for the printing module.  For example, when I'm printing a limited edition print, I put the edition number in the bottom left corner, under the image, within the border of the print.  The title goes in the middle, slighty larger font, and then possibly a watermark.
I can use the Identity Plate to create a nice looking title, but the Photo Info will only print in the middle with no options for positioning it anywhere else, or no options for other fonts.

I would second this proposal..... with a serious passion.  I think it is unbelievable that Adobe will not provide us with the option to print the metadata with our images.
The current metadata print options are in the dark ages, a joke and an insult to anyone trying to put a proper caption on a printed image.  For example, one cannot currently control the postion or font of a basic caption, never mind a considered template which might incorporate copyright, date, author, etc..   I also make folios (ala Lenswork).  Unfortunately, a detour to PS also means that this must be done manually, rather than using a template.  Adobe have all the tools to make this work, many of them are in the Slideshow module, so already the code is inside Lightroom.   It is so sad that a company like Blurb can provide these tools free of charge in free software, but Adobe seem incapable of providing these basic features.  I was disappointed they were not in version 1, frustrated when missing from version 2 and  apoplectic when not in version 3. I might excuse the omission if I could build a template in PS which allowed me to place text from the metadata into a formattted page layout, but this is not possible either. So despite the fact I have purchased both Lightroom and Photoshop, and paid for upgrade after upgrade of both products, this basic facility is still missing.
I can only deduce that people in Adobe print images in two modes.
    1) a lonely image in approx middle of the page with no text formatting or
    2) an image in draft mode with a caption and a name plate and uncontolled other text in ad hoc placements (totally unsuitable for presenting to a client).
I would put this requirement ahead of so many other popular requests (even ahead of requests such as networked storage, soft proofing, etc).  I can mention other software products who do a really good job of printing meta data with images, do serious work on sharpening, etc. for a fraction of the cost of the Lightroom / Photoshop combination. Becasue I am on an Adobe site I will not mention the names of these non Adobe products. If these small companies can solve this problem, surely Adobe can do so as well.
I also find that I cannot trust the page setup templates that I do create. It seems to me that many of the properties (ie page size, orientation, matt / gloss options) disappear without warning.  I suspect this happens when I have problems printing to networked Epson printers (maybe others, but I only use Epson ...with Windows 7.)  This is very frustrating when my template changes from Matt in to Gloss, with subsequent wasted of ink and frustration and lost time in correcting and re-updating the template.
Adobe, please finish the Print Module.  I do not want any more glitzy updates to publishing to the most recent social media exchange medium. Can we not get basic printing working first.
(..... thanks for listening.....end of rant).

  • Better captioning and text handling in print module

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I would like to see a bit more sophisticated text handling for captioning in the Print module.  It sure would be nice to be able to choose a font, position the text, choose a color, add a drop shadow, etc.  Nothing too crazy, but photo captions are a pretty important part of some photographers' workflow, and as of now I have to move between PS and LR to get any kind of nice text on the page, which interrupts the LR workflow.  I'd love to do almost all my work in LR and only use PS for the real heavy pixel lifting.
    Thanks for a great product!

  • More versatile print module

I'd like to have a more versatile print module to realise composition with one or many pictures. It could also be nice to include more border options like in the mogrify plug in.

The ability to export ICC profiles directly from LR without having to use Photoshop, Mogrify, or some other printing program would help those of us who use commercial printers. The concept of using Lightroom only with in-house printers is not consistent with the cost of good photo printers today, $600 and up, not to mention the expense of ink for large prints.

  • Develop module sudden lag at start...

I'd add this to the gigantic "LR is slow" topic, but it's a different oddity........
Windows 7, i920 at 3.8GHz, 12GB of memory, running LR 4.3 RC.  It was working better.  Yes, it's still not blinding fast or even as adequately fast as 3.6, but it was BETTER........
And it's been better for a couple weeks.  I've been able to start LR, look at images in the Library, go into Develop and have it display the preview fairly speedily, and so on...  Sliders and stuff weren't appallingly slow.
TWO DAYS AGO, for no reason that I can find, it suddenly reverted to behavior I used to see.  Still starts fine, still shows thumbnails fine, etc.  BUT, when I go into Develop, it puts up the preview, appears to finish and display the loupe text, THEN it starts the spinning wheel and just hangs there for 20 - 30 seconds saying "Loading".  It doesn't appear to be doing anything new, it's not generating (as far as I know) a 1:1 preview or opening another module, or doing ANYTHING IT DIDN'T DO LAST WEEK.  But, it definitely, consistently hangs for an extended period.  FWIW, when it does this, the background behind the loupe text goes from transparent to black, and it just sits there until it's done "Loading".
These are Nikon D300, dng files, so nothing large or interesting.  I haven't installed any new software or updates or anything else I know of in the last week.  I checked my cache partition and it's got 58 GB free.  I optimized my catalog yesterday.  I even deleted everything from the cache partition to see if that would matter.  It didn't.  I even rebooted the box just in case there was something else going on.  No difference.
OH, BTW, once it's done doing this, I can move from image to image in Develop and it NEVER DOES IT AGAIN...  It's only on initial entry.
I presume there's SOME setting, somewhere in LR that I changed or clobbered or did something to, but I have no idea what it is...  Hopefully the black background on the text will be a clue for someone.
Anybody have any ideas why I'd get this sudden change in behavior?

OK, whatever's going on, it's even more bizarre than I thought.......
I got rid of the agprefs this morning.  Started LR and it didn't make any difference.  BUT, I can repeat the problem easily, so I did some timing........
Start LR in library - 6 - 8 seconds - library's up, all folders filled in, everything's happy
Hit "Develop" with a standard D300 .dng file - 5 - 6 seconds for Develop to come up and the "Loading" to disappear
    DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING............
20 - 22 seconds LATER the text background turns black as does the "not the current process version" exclamation point at the lower right.
Now everything just sits and spins for 18-20 seconds.  Once done, it's all happy and I can just process normally........
BTW:  I've REMOVED every lens profile I can find on the box EXCEPT those specifically for my cameras....  At present, I'm only loading (as far as I know) 41 total profiles as opposed to the hundreds that were originally there.......
To make it even MORE interesting - if DURING that 20 - 22 seconds after "Loading" ends and before it locks up I jump to a different image in Develop it NEVER LOCKS UP while in develop.  I can jump around normally and display any of the images.  BUT, if I do that, as soon as I hit the "Library" button, it locks up, the text background turns black as does the "not the current process version" exclamation point at the lower right and everything just sits and spins for 18-20 seconds.  Once done, it jumps back to the Library module.
Using the Task Manager, I can see that when I start LR in Library, memory jumps from a total of 2.88 GB to 3.1 GB, so it's not using a lot of memory.
When I hit Develop it jumps from there to 3.43 GB, so again not a lot of memory.
Watching the resource monitor, I can see a lot of disk activity at startup, but once the catalog is open it all appears to be in the temp folder...  As near as I can tell, the majority of the reading/writing appears to be in files that start with "etilqs" followed by a bunch of giberish and no file extension.
When I jump to Develop, I see a surge in disk activity, again mostly in temp, then it settles down and there's essentially nothing happening.
THEN, about 20 seconds later, when things hang, the resource monitor shows that the Lightroom image is NOT RESPONDING.  I don't see any disk activity in the resource monitor, but since it's "not responding" I'm not sure activity would be displayed.  BUT, I also don't get an activity light on the disk.  So, if there IS disk activity, it's so short the LED isn't lighting long enough for me to see...
I've emptied every "Temp" folder on the C partition just in case...  Once I shut down Lightroom, I have TWO files in the temp folder.  I'm not sure EITHER has anything to do with Lightroom, and even if they do, I'm not sure what they indicate.  One is "cr_sdk_71165937.tmp" which is "0" bytes.  The other is "FXSAPIDebugLogFile.txt", ALSO with a size of "0" bytes.
And AGAIN, I've had 4.3RC on for about 3 weeks and the system DID NOT DO THIS PRIOR TO LAST SUNDAY...  My workaround at present is to stay out of Develop until I'm ready to go in with a bunch of images to edit, so it's annoying but not a productivity killer.  But, it'd be really nice to find out what I did that's causing this behavior.
