NLS Setting of Oracle Client
Can anybody let me know how to find the NLS Settings for an Oracle Client running on Win2K machine?
Thanks in Advance.
I am sorry my question was very brief. Let me write in more detail.
I have two web servers, both accessing the same Oracle Database.
One server is WinNT, which we are planning to decommission.
The second server is Win2K, which is going to replace WinNT.
In the database I have a table, say SSRFANC, whose two columns are of type CHAR.
Column 1: TRAN_PERIOD CHAR (10)
Column 2: PERIOD CHAR(8)
Now when inserting to this table, in the ASP we are setting the parameter type for these two columns as ORATYPE_DATE.
If I want to insert the value 003/2005 into the column PERIOD column, it works properly from WinNT Server but it does not work in Win2K. Through Win2K the value is saved as 05-03-01.
Secondly if I want to insert the value 2005/06/22 in the column TRAN_PERIOD, it is saved as 05-06-22 in Win2K, but in WinNT its saved correctly.
FYI, the ASP pages in both the servers are 100% same.
The Locale setting in Win2K and WinNT are same. Both the machines have Japanese OS.
Hope you can help me in this.

We have a set of oracle clients running on T5220 zones that need some help
Greetings all -
We have a set of oracle clients running on T5220 zones that need some help.
If, for example, I execute the query "select (all) from dba_objects", trace output reports 90% of the elapsed time spent under "SQLNet message from client".
Here are OS details for the clients: Solaris 10 5/08 s10s_u5wos_10 SPARC
Running "uname -a" from the client gives:
(SunOS bmc-ste-app 5.10 Generic_127127-11 sun4v sparc SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise-T5220)
Here are OS details for the dataserver: Enterprise Linux Enterprise Linux Server release 5.2
Running "uname -a" from the dataserver gives:
(2.6.18-92.1.6.0.2.el5 #1 SMP Thu Jun 26 17:44:55 EDT 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)
The RDBMS is 10.2.0.4
Again, please note, there is no application in the picture here. We are just running a simple catalog query (select * from dba_objects) from sqlplus. Why the wait on something like this? The wait also occurs when a different query is used (select (all) from SYS.COL$ where rownum < 50000). And it doesn't matter if I used the full client or the instant client. I still get the same high-wait.
We had thought - maybe this is a network thing - so we put a test client on the same subnet as the dataserver. This helped - but not enough. The wait is still way too high even with firewalls taken out of the equation.
We've also looked at arraysize, SDU, kernel settings. And we've spent time going over tkprof, truss and sqlnet-tracing.
Has anyone ever had to solve this HIGH WAIT ON CLIENT issue? Is there a work around or some tweak I'm missing.
Is anyone configured like we are (linux dataserver, solaris clients)? If so - did you see anything like this?

Edited by: jim1768 on Mar 31, 2010 2:13 PMHello,
We have the exact same issue. Did you ever solve this issue? We have a t5220 and have just upgraded our 11.5.10.2 11i system on it from 9.2.0.8 32-bit sparc to 11.2.0.1 64-bit sparc. Things should be faster but arent, and our consultant has tracked it down to high wait times when the apps tier using forms connects to the database tier on the same box. So even though the t5220 is both server and client, there is something about the client sql connection.through TNS that his having trouble. Thanks for any information. We've also created an S/R with Oracle.
Note: I am well aware of the other issues with the CMT server series but this particular issue seems independent of the regular / known issues and remains a mystery to us. Other known issues with the CMT servers for SPARC:

Oracle Client 11g 32bit on Windows 7 64Bit, does not show Norwgian Chars?
our company develop a program that communicate with Oracle Database though Oracle Client.
to use the program the user needs to install oracle client in as a runtime.
now some of our clients has some problem with the Norwegian chars! it shows as a question mark (?)
all the Norwegian chars (ø,æ and å) in the program that comes from the database replaces by (?)
I did many research but yet no luck! and ideas (I would love to welcome few so I can test them all)
cheers

What is the NLS setting at the client side?
I would recommend a read through the Globalization support guide.

Oracle Terminal, how can i simulate this setting into all client places
Hi friends,
i did setting at ORacle Terminal for ESC button to exit_form. it is ok working fine. i have his application installed into several client places, so, in all this places do i ahve to install Oracle terminal and change the key mappings or is any common registry setting i can add into the registry key, by copying FMRUSW.res file into my application folder,
i do have all my icons in my aplication folder and i add a registry key UI_ICON = 'myfloder', is there any possibility like this.
Thanks in advanceThat is one of the big problems with client/server forms. You have to install your FMRUSW.res on every machine running your application, or at least on a file server where the runforms software gets the fmx files.
Changing the resource file is not something you want to do on a regular basis. -
How do I set-up on %ORACLE_HOME%\bin for Oracle client on Windows XP
How do I set-up on %ORACLE_HOME%\bin for Oracle client on Windows XP?
The Oracle bin directory is: C:\oracle\ora90\bin
Thank you!If you are asking how to setup the resolution of %ORACLE_HOME%\bin to C:\oracle\ora90\bin, you must create a system environment variable called ORACLE_HOME that is set to a value of C:\oracle\ora90.
Kind regards,

How to set commandtimeout for oracle client
Hi ,
does anybody have an idea how to set the command timeout for ODP or MS managed oracle client for oracle.
This property does not seem to be supported . Although there is property exposed for command time out it does not work for odp and for MS oracleclient it is not present at all. Could anyone provide a workaround for it.
Thanks in advance.

Set up Oracle 8.1.7 Client on Redhat 7.3
First of all, I want to thank the people who gave out the hints of downgrading Redhat from 7.x to 6.x.
The problem I had was run into by many people on this forum: the Oracle Universal Installer window just doesn't pop up.
In my case, I took out most of the packages manually in order to have a slim and healthy Linux platform. The Redhat 7.3 installation I have takes less than 250M. There are a X server, fvwm2 desktop, netscape 4, netscape 6, wu-ftp server, sshd, telnetd, gcc, make, autofs, and so on.
My purpose is to run Apache with Tomcat, using an OCI JDBC driver and an Oracle Client, to talk to an Oracle server at the back end. The Oracle 8.1.7 for Linux was downloaded from the OTN site and untarred to the hard drive. The strange thing I saw was, the 'runInstaller' doesn't get me the OUI window but consumed 99% of the CPU.
After a few hours of struggling and research, this is I believe what makes it work:
1. As oracle user using 'bash' shell. Not 'sh'. Put all the needed enviornment variables into '.bash_profile' file, not the '.profile'. Redhat uses 'bash' as default shell. 'sh' in Redhat doesn't seem to behave as perfectly as in other Unix flavors, like Solaris, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and so on.
2. Make sure (or install manually) these RPMs:
compat-glibc-6.2-2.1.3.2
compat-libs-6.2-3
compat-egcs-6.2-1.1.2.16
compat-libstdc++-6.2-2.9.0.16
I doubt the last one is even not necessary.
3. Put
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5; export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL
in '.bash_profile'. Either make a new xterm or echo to make sure the value of $LD_ASSUME_KERNEL is '2.2.5'
And that's it! That's all it takes to get the Installer show up and work so nicely.
The reasons behind are: at the time the Oracle 8i rolling out, it's based on Linux kernel 2.2.5, not the 2.4.x in the Redhat 7.3 or SuSe 8.0. The 8i just doesn't run on Redhat 7.3 or SuSe 8.0 by nature, unless there is a backward compatibility smoothly working in between.
Oracle 8.1.7 comes with it's own JRE. On the Linux version of 8.1.7, I don't see a choice exist for the user to toggle between the packaged JRE and the JREs on the OS. In aother word, a backward compatibility (kernel downgrading) is needed to get the whole thing moving. There are no other choices. This JRE thing distracts people from looking for the real issue.
By the way, I did forget about Linux uses its own JDKs and JREs. But now I have jdk1.1.8 from ibm, 1.2.2 from blackdown, 1.3.1 from ... and so on. All these different versions of Java tools and environments are basicly for running some fancy features once 8i gets installed. Their lack doesn't stop 8i Installer from running so perfectly.
There is NOT a character mode for this 8.1.7 Installer.
As to now, I configured 'Net8' and was able to use 'sqlplus' to pull over data from a live server at work.
Thanks again to those who share their experiences and knowledge. Also hope this message will save others a couple of hours of hard trying. :-)
Han ZhangHello,
i have a question about your updates: you run a system with glibc 2.2? -> forget it!
i try to install 8.1.7 on RH7 and i get the same error-message, i downgrade to RH6.2 (orginal, without updates) and its work!
Have alook to the topics with RH7 problems or use RH6.2 without updates(glibc)

Setting up oracle thin client for 9i?
Does anyone have experience stting up data pools using oracle's 9i thin client that ships with BEA WLS 6.1? I am on a Sun Solaris box running Solaris 8 and oracle client 9i. I have followed all of the instrcutions (that I can find anyway) and it does not seem to work. Can someone please tell me exactly what to put in each field on the console for the Data Pool and in the classpath?
Thanks in advance!!
AdamHi Adam,
Configuration of a connection pool for oracle 9 is the same
as for oracle 8.
The only thing you should do is downloading a new
classes12.zip that supports oracle 9, and putting it in to
weblogic class path.
You can download classes12.zip from otn.oracle.com.
To put it to the weblogic classpath you need to modify
weblogic startup script.

What is the different with the NLS setting in installation
I mean,
1.when I install the Oracle, set the native LANG to one(call it A), and client access it with the NLS set to another(call it B), what the different between if I install it with B directly? the client can get same result, isn't it?
2.For I upgrade a Oracle7 to oracle8i, the NLS keep unchanged(ASCII), both the server and the Client(developed with developer2000) runs OK. But I need exchange data with another Oracle8, whose NLS is different(ZHKGB2312,I forget it). when I upgraded the server(change to the same one,zhkgb2312), the original table size changed from 6 to 12, so the client can not run correctly.
Did anybody meet the same thing? and any advice for me to solve this problem?>>when I install the Oracle, set the native LANG to one(call it A),
You mean your database was created using character set A ?
>>and client access it with the NLS set to another(call it B)
You mean your client NLS_LANG character set is B ?
what the different between if I install it with B directly? the client can get same result, isn't it?
From reading your 2nd question, I am guessing that you have Chinese data in both of your USA7ASCII and ZHKGB2312 database, and you want to exchange data between them. I am sure that this is working for all your English ASCII data, but not for the Chinese 2 byte data. This is because Oracle handles the character set conversions between the databases (character set conversion occurs only when the 2 character sets are different),the real problem is that you are using the wrong database character set to store your chinese data; US7ASCII can not process Chinese data correctly, they got into your database because you set the client character set to be the same as the database character set, hence you are fooling Oracle that you are feeding in US7ASCII data.
When you try to exchange data between databases, Oracle does not know how to receive or send these Chinese character from inside an US7ASCII database, it does not know what character set these 8 bit characters are encoded in, US7ASCII should contain 128 characters only.
Please refer to the Globalization Support FAQ - on the Globalization Support website http://technet.oracle.com/tech/globalization/content.html
for more information on Database character set and NLS_LANG client character set. -
Error in installing Oracle client 11g on Windows 2008 R2 (64bit) XenApp 6
I am trying to install "win64_11gR2_client.zip" Oracle 11g Client 64bit on Windows 2008 R2 that has been clamped and restricted by our security department. Details of the clamp:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885409
The Windows 2008 R2 server is running on CITRIX XenApp 6.
When we try to install the client on a normal version of Windows 2008 R2 without the Clamp, the installation follows through and successfully. However, when we try to install the 11g Client on the Clamped Windows 2008 R2, we get the error below:
[INS-08802] Unable to instantiate the View class referred by View ID 'SummaryUI'
This indicates the primary issue is with the clamp. My issue now is knowing what exactly is causing the error. what restrictions should I enable from the clamp in order to get the installation working?
Here is the error log:

Oracle Client 11gR2 installation issue on RHEL v5.4 64-bit
Hi,
I am trying to install Oracle Client software 11gR2 on RHEL v5.4 64-bit. I have resolved all the libraries dependency as well as Kernel changes as suggested by the installer. The error in the log file is as attached. At present I have "skipped" this error and proceeded with installation.
While installing the client, the installer fails while configuring the Net CA with error:

Also when I invoke the SQL Client; sqlplus user@db and enter the password, the sqlplus exits without any error and returns to the terminal console. Please note earlier I has getting a SELinux violation and have changed it to "permissive" mode
Please let me know how to resolve NetCA installation and the sqplus issue.
Thanks & regards,
VinayHi,
Thet NetCA error occurs during installation and I believe the installer should take care of the ORACLE_HOME variable setting.
But before invoking sqlplus I have set the ORACLE_HOME and LD_LIBRARY_PATH setting in the .bash_profile as mentioned in the installation guide. The snippet of the profile file is:
export ORACLE_HOME=~/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1
export JAVA_HOME=$ORACLE_HOME/jdk
export PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH;
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export TNS_ADMIN=$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
export TWO_TASK=mmcoedb
I am able to tnsping to the server/service name too but when I try to login using the user/password using sqlplus, it simply exits without any error.
Please let me know how to resolve the error.
Best regards,
Vinay -
Connect to Oracle without Oracle Client in Windows?
Hi All,
Is there anyway to connect to Oracle DB without any installation of Oracle Product in Client?
I am using MS ODBC Driver Oracle but It need the "Data Source Name"
It seems that client machine do need to Setup the NET 8 Configure / Tnsname.ora
I can try to set any thing in Oracle Server, But want to minimize the effort doing on the client (Because there are many!).
I am using Visual Basic, WIN XP as client Platform. WIN 2K as Oracle DB Server.
Can anybody give me a hand. Thank you very much!
Eric YuenYou'll need to install Oracle Client in the client machine. ODBC (or other) connections need OCI and Oracle Net layers.
The Oracle ODBC has a lot of dependencies, probably a thousand files. Unfortunately Client is pretty heavy... managewize also. So that's why you should develop "internet apps". :) -
Multiple Oracle Clients on Same Machine for different apps
I was not able to find info that answered this so sorry if I missed something that explains this.
At our site we have many applications some I know lots about some I'm not even aware of because we have mulitple sites. The application I develop uses an Oracle 8.1.7 database. In the next year we are going to be upgrading to a 9i database. The app I program for is written in VB and uses 0040 with the 7.3.4 version. We want to upgrade our client to the latest version to use all the features of the 9i database when that times comes. Can we have our 9i client on the same machine that may have other apps that require the 8i client or even the 7.3.4 client without breaking them? The other apps may or may not use 0040. Some of these apps are Oracle Forms applications and some can be anything under the sun.
I still need to do testing to see what breaks but thought someone may already have the answers some of my ?'s Any tips or info you can provide would be great.
ThanksTwo possible answers
1) Oracle added multi-home support to the Oracle client in 8i (may have been 8.0, I'm really not sure). This allows you to set up multiple 8i and above clients on a single machine in different Oracle Homes and should solve the majority of your problems. Having a 7.3.4 client installed wouldn't be supported, but 8i clients should have no difficulty connecting to a 7.3.4 database.
When Oracle added multi-home support, not all the Oracle client products were made multi-home compatible. The ODBC driver, for example, wasn't multi-home compatible until significantly later patchsets. I belive that OO4O has been multi-home compatible since the client has been, though.
2) From a technical standpoint, you should be able to have a 7.3.4 client alongside 8i and above clients. In my experience, this works, but isn't something that Oracle supports.
