No Audio Levels During Recording in CS6

Hi,
is there a way to turn on the audio level monitoring before and during audio recording in premiere cs6 ? In the help file it says the levels would show, but when I try, the levels won't show.
Thx,
Frank

is this a bug ?

  • Audio drops during recording

    Hi guys,
I'm working on my MacBook Pro 2.4 with Logic Pro 8.0.2 and M-Audio Ozonic FireWire interface (latest driver installed). During recording (just one voice track) over an empty session I notice random audio drops. I tryed to change latency and buffer without success. Same equipment and software on my Mac Pro 2.66 works great.
Last year I worked all the summer with the same MacBook Pro (maybe some osx and software versions earlier) without any problem.
    Any good ideas ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Piero

Turn Airport off first and close all other applications.
Recording one track onto the system drive should not be a problem at all but nevertheless try recording all your Audio onto a fast external FW drive in the future.

  • Normalize Audio levels on record???

We have built an internal application that uses Flash Media
Server 3 to allow people to create their own internal podcasts. The
app is written in Flex and uses netstream.attachaudio to record the
audio from the client to the FMS right through the browser/computer
mic. The problem is that sometimes the users speaks to low/loud
    etc.
Are there any options for me to 'normalize' the sound levels
either dynamically during the record of the stream or via a post
processing after the stream is done.
    any suggestions out there?

Just in case it helps; This is not a runnable code, but code
can be derived easily from the logic.

  • Audio levels when recording iPad video

how do i contro audio input levelsl when i record video on my iPad?

The best advice is to tell them their work is coming back non-compliant and you can't have that.  Let them figure out why and solve it.  (That's is part of their job, after all.)

  • Normalize audio level (during export to AC3 audio) -- what should it be?

Hi. New to STP (v3) in general.
Someone recommended, when I reported having issues with my burned DVDs stuttering at certain places, consistently, to both use a constant bit rate for video when encoding an MPEG2, as well as making the audio an AC3 file at 256K.
Using soundtrack pro, the 256K part I can figure out. What I'm worried about is this option (that you can't seem to bypass completely) called "dialog normalization". I have no idea what that should be set at. It defaults to -27. Now, I do all the audio work in the original edit, so I don't want this encoding to do any additional normalization. So what's the deal?
If it matters, my file that will be encoded is an uncompressed (in DV terms) AVI that was edited and rendered on a PC. I know this is not optimal for Macs, but I know it can work. So the video will be made MPEG2 with DVD studio, and I want to encode the audio as AC3, at 256K. Just for safety. These are film festival screeners, so the quality doesn't have to be maxed out.
So, where do I want this "dialog normalization" set to? In the original film, most sounds are between -18 and -6 dB, generally, rarely approaching 0. This particular film is a toughie here because there's little dialog period, mostly sound FX and music.

Dialog norm shouldn't be confused with Normalization as it is usually used.
Dialog norm is metadata popularized in AC3 (Dolby Digital) files in an attempt to have the DVD player adjust its volume so that every DVD has the same loudness. If you know the [LEQ(m)|http://www.dolby.com/assets/pdf/techlibrary/34_TV_LoudnessAES.pdf] of your track, then you should set the dialog norm to that level. LEQ(m) is a measurement of "loudness equivalence". It's invented by Dolby, but they and many others are pushing it as a way to equalize the listening experience in the face of louder and louder sounding mixesl The setting of -27 is the default setting. Unfortunately the only way to measure LEQ(m) is with an [expensive box from Dolby|http://www.dolby.com/assets/pdf/techlibrary/123_pa_br_0206Model737.Spec.pdf]. There is [software|http://www.channld.com/audle.html] that will measure [LEQ(a)|http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-us&q=leq(a)&ie=UTF-8& oe=UTF-8], but that may be slightly different than LEQm. It might be good enough for non-broadcast.
I haven't used the STP AC3 tools, but I have used Dolby encoders in other software. If you don't know what you're doing, I would recommend setting it to OFF or -32 (if that is the highest number available). That way the DVD player will play your track at its full volume without any attenuation.
Here is a short excerpt from the [Metadata pdf|http://www.dolby.com/assets/pdf/techlibrary/18Metadata.Guide.pdf] available at dolby Labs.

  • Recording trouble. Audio levels are normal and then quiet?

As you can tell by the title, I have no idea how to properly phrase this issue. Anyways, I have had difficulties recording on this computer...
    Information to keep in mind:
    - The model is Satellite C655D-S5200
    - I have owned this computer for nearly two months
    - This problem has been present since the first day I tried recording with it
    - I record with Audacity
    - This problem occurs in other programs, such as the default webcam program that came installed with this computer model.
Since I can't really seem to put what is going on into words, I thought it would be best to upload a screenshot of the problem. Also, I have included a screenshot of my current recording device. Hopefully the screenshots work. Otherwise, I'll do my best to describe the problem.

Just to make sure I'm understanding, when you're recording something that's at an approximately non-fluctuating audio level, the recording drops substantially. The audio level of the recording is dropping even though the audio level of the source is not, correct?
You could try reinstalling the audio driver.
    Conexant Audio Driver(v8.54.1.0; 02-23-2011; 42.15M)
I've never heard of this kind of issue before. If that doesn't solve it, I'd suggest contacting technical support at (800) 457-7777.

  • Audio levels on an external monitor vary during playback when using HDMI audio

I've been having issues with movie playback using a large 1080p HDMI TV.   During playback the audio level will come in strong, go faint, then go strong again, but not on any sort of pattern I could discern.   It did this on three seperate movies legally purchased via iTunes.  I get audio and video without trouble, its just the audio goes soft when it shouldn't.
If you remember the VHS days and "MACROVISION" encoding, then you have an idea what it was doing, although it was the audio levels, not the video playback.
Is this a fault of the system, a DRM gremlin, or something else?

I think you may be onto something with the graphics card concept. The problem I am having only exists when I am working on an HD project. When I switched back to DV-NTSC then the monitor is fine during playback.
Yes, I am routing my external monitor through my DV deck, which is not an HD deck - so again, that could be another weak link in the chain.
This is the first HD project that I am editing, so obviously a few kinks still need to be worked out. My internal hard drive has 1.5 gigs of ram but I am not sure what the specs are on the graphics card.

  • Audio levels on my SONY PCM D50 portable recorder

    Hello,
I am unable to get any audio levels on my SONY PCM D50 recorder. I use it very infrequently and i has never failed me otherwise, but suddenly this problem.
I am sure that i have set to MIC (as sooposed to line), I DO NOT have it on the -20db seeting either. The only thing unusual is that when i booted it yesterday, i was trying to connect it to my video camera as an on camera mic with an XLR to mini cable, and i may have inserted the mini into the wrong input first and messed something up.
But now It shows no signal with the internam stereo mics or an external mic, although i see some registration of a signal at -42db wheni have the recording levels cranked up all the way.
    please help!

Hello, it sounds like the cables were connected to the PCM-D50’s external microphone input jack (rather than the recorders line output jack).  Can you please confirm the setup?

  • If I change audio levels in AE CS6 from 0db, it decides to output left channel only.

This is a bug that's been prevalent in every iteration of AE CS6. I'm updated to the most recent version. This is also something I've seen around a lot of forums, but nobody has an answer.
If I change the audio levels on any audio track from the default 0db, the RAM preview only plays back the left channel which completely breaks the way I can properly work.
If I render it out, the audio is fine... it's clearly only on RAM previews. But rendering out things to check audio levels is not a solution.
    Any idea why this happens?

  • Monitoring audio during record session

I'm using Soundbooth (CS4) to digitize LP's on my Mac using an Audio Technica AT-LP120 USB turntable.
I'm able to capture the audio in Soundbooth, but I'd like to be able to hear the audio during the recording session.
I can't seem to figure out how to do that. Can someone give me a little coaching please?

There's a button in the middle of the recording dialog box called "Monitor Input during Recording".

I am trying to record in Garageband. I have a mic plugged in to my Avid Mbox and the Mbox into my Mac. The levels on the microphone keep automatically going down, during recording. This even happens when I set the track volume. What could this be cause of this?
    Thank you

This causes problems for me. When I place a single .mbox file into a new folder and import that folder I get the following dialogue:
When I click 'continue' I get a new import folder, but the formatting is a garbled nightmare of seemingly random subdirectories upon subdirectories:
Each of the subdirectories under "ASV" should have just contained messages, not lots of embedded subdirectories. Am I doing something wrong?

  • CS6 - how do I adjust audio level part way through a clip using audio mixer?

Hi there - I'm using the trial version of CS6 and will almost certainly buy it. I've watched lots of the video tutorials but am stumped on this simple issue!
    1. Let's say I have a clip and I want to increase the audio level part way through a clip.
    2. In Example A below I have added a keyframe at the point I want to change the volume.
    3. I then went to the audio mixer and increased the volume level using the slider. But nothing changed on the clip.
    4. The only way I could get it to work was to add more key frames after the first one (see Example B) and increase the volume on the timeline.
    5. This is very fiddly and I'd prefer to be able to do this using the audio mixer. Is this possible?
    Example A                                                                                                              Example B

With the proper Send settings (Write, Touch, etc., as Craig mentions), you can easily ride the Volume in real-time. I like to add a Numbered Marker to where I want the adjustment to begin, hold, and then end, so that I have several visual clues, besides the aural ones.
I also have found that the default setting for Audio>Minimal Time Thinning Interval places too many Keyframes on the Track, so I have bumped that up in Preferences.
Also remember, the Keyframes added with Audio Mixer are Track Keyframes, and not Clip Keyframes. If you were to remove all Clips, those Keyframes would still be there, and would affect any Clips that you added back.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Multicam audio levels/meters??? - Premiere CS6

Is there a way to see the audio meters while in the multicam window?
The audio plays fine but is there really no way to monitor the audio to see if its peaking or not, or what level its at, unless I stop the multicam and play it in the timeline?
All the source clips, all the timeline clips, all the project window clips all enable the audio levels/meters.
Why not the multicam? Seems odd.

Audio is the other half of what editors deal with so I kinda do need to worry about it.
Agreed.  Just not from the MC window, but from the sequence where you can actually make changes and adjust things.
Then why do the audio meters work when playing clips in the project window? Yes, the sequence is where changes are made but being able to monitor what a clip looks like or sounds like outside of the timeline is essential to any good NLE. It's not editing, it's monitoring. Just an oversight on Premiere Pro's design that I hope they fix asap.

I'm starting to learn that you are the king of "that's not what I care about so it must not be important".
It's actually more often a "how can I get this job done with the tools and features that are available to me right now" kind of attitude.
While that's a practical approach and certainly one that will cut down on stress, that's also the mindset that allowed for companies like RIM (Blackberry) to fall behind their competitors. I prefer a more "work with what you've got but if something's missing or broken, speak up" approach.  My hope is that the PPro design team actually listens to their users to make it better. We all have things we wish would improve or be fixed and if we all just said "eh, it is what it is" then nothing would ever improve. I'm more of a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it...but if it is, then stop making excuses and fix it". I know the absence of something as simple as audio meters doesn't mean mulitcam is broken, but its an example of an oversight on the part of Premiere's design team that I hope they fix. It's a very simple feature. Every other NLE I've worked with has it. It helps the workflow especially with long multicam sequences. There's no reason it shouldn't work like it does if you play a clip anywhere else. Now its just a matter of if they care enough to fix it.
Truthfully, I was hoping it was just a glitch with my computer and someone was going to chime in and say "it works for me" and I'd have to re-install or something and then it would work. But I guess not. We all work with the tools and features that are available to us right now, but if adding a functionality that should have been there from the beginning can speed up my workflow then I'll gladly be the squeeky wheel.

  • Audio levels in exported video [Premiere Pro CS6]

The audio level is just what I want in the actual track. However, when I export the video the exported audio is too loud. So I went back and lowered the clip by 3dB...the volume level of exported video still didn't change--it sounds like people are shouting.
This is a new problem...is there a setting in the export dialog box I have accidentally changed?
    Thanks in advance.

I have found this to be a problem in CC at one of the places I work.
Export at 16bit perfect levels with a tone ident...bring it back it into the project and now -3db.
I tried exporting 32bit float and it comes out 3db higher!
Only method I have found is to export audio separately to a 32bit file then in a new final video sequence, replace the audio timeline with this file and adjust levels. The new export seems to come out at the right levels
May have something to do with a bug in the pan law but you can't adjust settings like in Audition.
Many bugs in this program causing me nightmares....
....Can't save track preset effects and have to copy complicated track EQ and compression settings by hand
....Track effect settings adjustments that revert as soon as you click away or hit play
....Very slow with crashes and freezes in sequences with nested sequences.
Leave plenty of time for your final exports...you will need it

  • Proper Audio Levels

I have a project that has 3 different songs playing in the background. All 3 play at different levels/volumes. How can I adjust them to all play at equal levels?

Sure there is - take your pick -
    1. adjust in audio tab in viewer
-with level line over wave form
    -numerically in level field
    -using level slider
    2. use ctrl-bracket keys to adjust selected clips in 3dB increments during playback
    3. drag pink line with clip overlays on in timeline
    4. option-apple-L to type in a numeric level adjustment on selected clip(s)
    5. adjust levels in the audio mixer for that track/clip
In the audio mixer, you can click the "record audio keyframes" button at the top right - this will add keyframes to the audio level as you drag the faders up and down during playback. The audio mixer also allows smooth uninterrupted audio while making adjustments during playback - my favorite.
    Oh, and you can also
    6. copy a clip with correct levels and paste attributes onto other clips.
If any of these eight methods of adjusting audio levels don't suit you, perhpas you can submit a feature request.
    Hope this helps -
