No connection on G5 Quad

My Sony TRV 990E connects fine to iMac, Powerbook - but there is no way to make it work with the new G5 Quad (7800GT) Tried everything - all tricks. iSight works fine...
Does anybody know of issues???

Hi Macwilli:
Are you using the 4 to 6-pin firewire on the front port? Try the back port.

  • Strange display resolution on 30" connected to Quad

    My son has just connected a 30" display to his Quad with Nvidia GE Force 6600 card and the Apple System Profiler shows resolution of 1280x800. Of course this is bad and text is BIG etc etc. The resolution for the 30" is 2560x1600.
    Let me backtrack a little here.
    Son's Quad was purchased along with the 30" and it was fully operational.
    I have a 2x 2.5 GHz PM with Nvidia Ultra 6800 connected to a 23" display.
    Now before son started to use his Quad we switched the 30" with my 23" and he used the 23" for some two monts and I used his 30" for same period. The 30" worked without issues on my PM. I did play CoD2 quite a bit with the 30" - very nice too.
    Yesterday we switch the displays back. That is, the 30" is now connected to son's Quad and the 23" is now connected to my PM.
    The 23" on my PM works perfectly.
    The 30" on my son's Quad has max resolution of 1280x800. The ASP utility shows this. The System Pref Displays pane also shows max resolution for display is 1280x800.
    What's going on here ?
    How can my son get things back to be same when the 30" was originally connected to his Quad with a resolution of 2560x1600 ?
    Son has rebooted, powered off display but this hasn't changed things at all.
    He has not updated any software since using his Quad - has not downloaded any new Apple Software Updates either.
    I did upgrade my PM from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 with the 30" display connected a few weeks back.
    It seems that the Quad with the 23" connected has somehow setup something in the graphics card (maybe) that is somehow affecting the proper operation of the 30" display.
    Any help would be most appreciated as son who lives in his own place has lots of video editing an such to do for a living, and I'm helping via phone.
    Thanks.... Barry

    Problem solved - son had the 30" plugged into the 2nd display socket of the 6600 graphics card. Ho hum. ;-))
    Thanks.

  • Quad video output problem @ 640x480

    When I connect my new Quad to a TV with the DVI to Video adapter there are some glitchy looking artifacts at the very top of the display. Some pixels of random colors but most of them are just black. This only affects the top 30 pixels or so and only on the TV (not on my main screen). The problem only exists when displaying at 640x480 and with overscan on. The problem persists whether using s-vid or composite cable. I have the stock graphics card, the nVideo 6600. I'll post a picture of the glitch to this thread when I can get my hands on a digital camera.

    Good morning from Croatia..
    I have same problem: lines going horizontaly from down to up..same video card...maybe flash bios would help but i'm not shure..still have that problem..

  • A little disappointed in quad

    First let me say that I am a photographer and not a computer whiz. I peruse these forums trying to learn as much as I can. I recently switched from an "old" dual 2.0 powermac to a quad. Originally sucked in by Aperture and wanted a machine to run it faster. I have since decided that Aperture in it's present form is unusable to me, but certainly expected much increased performance with my Adobe Bridge / CS2 workflow.
    Previous G5 PM: dual 2.0, 3.5 g ram, ATI Radeon 9600 pro
    Present quad: 6.5 g ram, geoforce 6600 (stock)
    All external hard drives, etc. are the exact same as before. Photoshop configuration (scratch disk, ram usage, etc.) set exactly the same as before. Overall, the quad is definately much "snappier" and much improved for multi-tasking with different applications open, etc. but some commands and actions in PS are actually SLOWER?? Basic things like "save for web" and "file close" (command + w) give a brief spinning beachball now where before they were instantaneous. Actions I use constantly actually take longer now. Filters (sharpening, blur, skin soften, etc.) do run a little faster but the most basic commands take longer????
    I used the firewire apple transfer utility to move all software, etc. to the new quad. I use external drives to store all image files, etc. just the same as before.
    Am I expecting too much difference? Photoshop not able to take advantage of extra processing or ram?? Comments?
    G5 Dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Photoshop configuration (scratch disk, ram usage, etc.) set exactly the same as before
    You shouldn't be needing a scratch disk anymore, Tiger is supposed to override Photoshop CS2's RAM limit and give it all it needs. (only CS2 supposedly)
    4GB is supposed to give 40% more performance than 2GB in a Quad.
    So what I'm guessing is your using up your RAM for other things, widgets, other programs and now your swapping to your scratch disk, which if you need one, really needs to be the fastest thing possible because your replacing a drive I/O speed for RAM.
    A RAID O pair of the fastest drives and the fastest interface you got. This would need to be a pair of 10,000 RPM external SATA drives with a large cache, preferably 16MB, like a pair of 150 GB Western Digital RaptorX's in some sort of external enclosure like a MiniG with a Sonnet PCI SATA card, which for the Quad isn't quite out yet.
    However a pair of empty Firewire 400 external drives each with a direct connection to the Quad and RAID O'ed, might do the job cheaper for less performance.
    The important thing is you need a separate channel to each drive, I don't know how many Firewire 800 ports there are on the Quad, but you would need two to use this interface at maximum speed.
    Of course the problem comes up that your hogging all your ports, you just can't disconnect a RAID O set as a scratch disk at will either and expect PS to be nice to you.
    But it would be just better to get more RAM and get done with it.
    Overall, the quad is definitely much "snappier" and much improved for multi-tasking with different applications open, etc. but some commands and actions in PS are actually SLOWER?? Basic things like "save for web" and "file close" (command + w) give a brief spinning beach-ball now where before they were instantaneous. Actions I use constantly actually take longer now. Filters (sharpening, blur, skin soften, etc.) do run a little faster but the most basic commands take longer????
    This is your scratch, boot or file drive doing this to you.
    Mac OS X performs much better with a very fast, slim boot drive as it caches all the time. Western Digital is coming out with a 10,000 RPM, 16MB cache, 150GB internal SATA which will make a excellent boot/itunes/bare bones "home" drive for performance. With your files in new folders on another internal drive, like the stock or something faster.
    I had to RAID O my two Raptors (74GB each) to get a little more space as I keep them less than 50% filled for maximum performance in Mac OS X. However it can be a bit risky and I clone once a week to a external drive with daily file backups.
    Needless to say I don't see many beach-balls.
    Now another thing is you got the stock video card, supposedly some processing is dumped to that, so that might be affecting performance.
    Also you have to expect that PS CS2 isn't quite fully optimized for a Quad yet, it's are pretty recent hardware addition, and there is a lot of software being recoded at Adobe from Code-warrior (now obsolete) to X-Code for Universal Binaries.
    Adobe might be standardizing their code based on a dual core, because most Mac's and PC's will be having that and it's easier to write once than to write a special version for Quads. Who knows? We will find out later I guess.
    What's important is you got a monster computer at a great price, the software will have to catch up that's all. Just get more RAM so you have PS CS2 use it's 4GB needed and then make sure you get more to cover anything else you like to run at the same time. Run everything in RAM as much as possible without swapping to your boot drive or scratch disk.
    I have some more performance and cloning info at my site, take a peak

  • Dell MD3620i connect to vmware - best practices

    Hello Community,
    I've purchased a Dell MD3620i with 2 x ports 10Gbase-T Ethernet on each controller (2 x controllers).
    My vmware environment consists of 2 x ESXi hosts (each with 2ports x 1Gbase-T) and an HP Lefthand storage( also 1Gbase-T). The switches I have are Cisco3750 that have only 1Gbase-T Ethernets.
    I'm going to replace this HP Storage with a DELL storage.
    As I have never worked with DELL storages, I need your help to answer my questions:
    1. What is teh best practices to connect vmware hosts to the Dell MD3620i ?
    2. what is the process to create a LUNs?
    3. Can I create multiply LUNs on only one disk group? or is the best practice to create one LUN on one disk group?
    4. How to set iSCSI 10GBase-T ports working on 1Gbps switch?
    5. Is the best practice to connect the Dell MD3620i directly to the vmware Hosts without switch?
    6. The old iscsi on HP storage is in a different network, can I do vmotion to move all virtual machines from one iSCSI network to another and then change the iSCSI IP addresses on vmware hosts without virtual machines interruption?
    7. Can I bundle two iSCSI ports to one 2Gbps interface and conenct to the switch? I'm using two switches, so I want connect each controller to each switch by bounding their interfaces to 2Gbps. My Question is, would be controller switched over to another controller if the Ethernet link falls on the switch?(in case one switch is rebooting)
    tahnks in advanse!

    TCP/IP basics: A computer cannot connect to 2 different (isolated) networks (e.g. 2 directly-attached cables between the server and a SAN's iSCSI port) that share the same subnet.
    Data corruption is highly unlikely if you were to share the same vlan for iSCSI, however, performance and overall reliability would be impacted.
    With a MD3620i, here are a few setup scenarios using the factory default subnets (and for direct-attached setups I had to add 4 additional subnets):
    Single switch (not recommended as the switch becomes your single point of failure):
    Controller 0:
    iSCSI port 0: 192.168.130.101
    iSCSI port 1: 192.168.131.101
    iSCSI port 2: 192.168.132.101
    iSCSI port 4: 192.168.133.101
    Controller 1:
    iSCSI port 0: 192.168.130.102
    iSCSI port 1: 192.168.131.102
    iSCSI port 2: 192.168.132.102
    iSCSI port 4: 192.168.133.102
    Server 1:
    iSCSI NIC 0: 192.168.130.110
    iSCSI NIC 1: 192.168.131.110
    iSCSI NIC 2: 192.168.132.110
    iSCSI NIC 3: 192.168.133.110
    Server 2: <end in 120>
    All ports plug into that 1 switch (obviously).
    If you only want to use 2 NICs for iSCSI, have server 1 use the 130 and 131 subnet, and server 2 use 132 and 133, server 3 then uses 130 and 131 again. This spreads the IO load between the iSCSI ports on the SAN.
    Dual switches (one VLAN for all the iSCSI ports on that switch though):
    NOTE: Do NOT link the switches together. This helps prevent issues that occur on one switch from affecting the other switch.
    Controller 0:
    iSCSI port 0: 192.168.130.101 -> To Switch 1
    iSCSI port 1: 192.168.131.101 -> To Switch 2
    iSCSI port 2: 192.168.132.101 -> To Switch 1
    iSCSI port 4: 192.168.133.101 -> To Switch 2
    Controller 1:
    iSCSI port 0: 192.168.130.102 -> To Switch 1
    iSCSI port 1: 192.168.131.102 -> To Switch 2
    iSCSI port 2: 192.168.132.102 -> To Switch 1
    iSCSI port 4: 192.168.133.102 -> To Switch 2
    Server 1:
    iSCSI NIC 0: 192.168.130.110 -> To Switch 1
    iSCSI NIC 1: 192.168.131.110 -> To Switch 2
    iSCSI NIC 2: 192.168.132.110 -> To Switch 1
    iSCSI NIC 3: 192.168.133.110 -> To Switch 2
    Server 2: <end in 120>
    Same note about using just 2 NICs per server for iSCSI. In this setup each server will still use both switches so that a switch failure should not take any of your servers' iSCSI connectivity down.
    Quad switches (or 2 VLANs on each of the 2 switches above):
    iSCSI port 0: 192.168.130.101 -> To Switch 1
    iSCSI port 1: 192.168.131.101 -> To Switch 2
    iSCSI port 2: 192.168.132.101 -> To Switch 3
    iSCSI port 4: 192.168.133.101 -> To Switch 4
    Controller 1:
    iSCSI port 0: 192.168.130.102 -> To Switch 1
    iSCSI port 1: 192.168.131.102 -> To Switch 2
    iSCSI port 2: 192.168.132.102 -> To Switch 3
    iSCSI port 4: 192.168.133.102 -> To Switch 4
    Server 1:
    iSCSI NIC 0: 192.168.130.110 -> To Switch 1
    iSCSI NIC 1: 192.168.131.110 -> To Switch 2
    iSCSI NIC 2: 192.168.132.110 -> To Switch 3
    iSCSI NIC 3: 192.168.133.110 -> To Switch 4
    Server 2: <end in 120>
    In this case using 2 NICs per server means the first server uses the first 2 switches and the second server uses the second set of switches.
    Direct attach:
    iSCSI port 0: 192.168.130.101 -> To server iSCSI NIC 1 (on an example IP of 192.168.130.110)
    iSCSI port 1: 192.168.131.101 -> To server iSCSI NIC 2 (on an example IP of 192.168.131.110)
    iSCSI port 2: 192.168.132.101 -> To server iSCSI NIC 3 (on an example IP of 192.168.132.110)
    iSCSI port 4: 192.168.133.101 -> To server iSCSI NIC 4 (on an example IP of 192.168.133.110)
    Controller 1:
    iSCSI port 0: 192.168.134.102 -> To server iSCSI NIC 5 (on an example IP of 192.168.134.110)
    iSCSI port 1: 192.168.135.102 -> To server iSCSI NIC 6 (on an example IP of 192.168.135.110)
    iSCSI port 2: 192.168.136.102 -> To server iSCSI NIC 7 (on an example IP of 192.168.136.110)
    iSCSI port 4: 192.168.137.102 -> To server iSCSI NIC 8 (on an example IP of 192.168.137.110)
    I left controller 1 on the "102" IPs for easier future changing back to just 4 subnets.

  • NEW QUAD G5 WON'T RUN

    Hi all!
    I've just received my new Quad G5.
    I was transfering my old session from 2x2G5 to new Quad by Firewire targeting.
    In the middle of the process, the Quad worked down (black screen with I/O picture). I've pressed 5 seconds the button and now, my Quad won't run.
    Nothing to screen, nothing to keyboard and mouse (no red light under).
    Fans are working very fast. that's all... Keyboard is not responding. I can't boot on CD because I cannot open the trap...
    I've tried to reset mother board (little button behind fans), pulling-up and replacing micro-cell to reset PRAM but nothing, always nothing....
    Could anyone help me ? Thanks a lot for your responses.

    1: Reboot the computer by holding the power button and then the mouse button down (wired mouse connected to the Quad itself) the drive tray will open.
    2: Stick Tiger install cd #1 and close the tray by gently pushing. Hold the power button to reboot the Quad and hold down the option key. A list of bootable selections will appear.
    3: Select AHT and run the extended tests, note any hardware problems. If any call Apple. (note: AHT on the disks expire after so many OS updates as Apple changes things in firmware occasionally)
    4: If AHT is clear then reboot holding C key. The computer will boot from the cd.
    5: Under the installer menu will be Disk Utility, run the repair disk and repair permissions. Note any problems. If the disk has hardware problems call Apple.
    6: Quit the installer/reboot the computer, you shouldn't need to hit the power button. See if the computer boots from the internal drive.
    7: If not go back to #4 and from Disk utility select Erase w/zero option the internal drive (this will erase all data!) and quit and reinstall Tiger fresh.
    8: Don't run Migration assistant, it copies things blindly, won't copy copy protected programs and hacks correctly. Instead use your same login name, password, etc. as the Dual, leaving the hard drive name the only difference between the two, update your OS to the latest version, then install apps from fresh sources.
    9: Now Firewire target disk mode the Dual and copy your iTunes folder, Safari bookmarks and Mail boxes to exactly the same location on the Quad (import the mail boxes). Don't open iTunes yet. Take the Dual off and rename the Quad hard drive exactly as the Dual, now start iTunes and your playlist pathnames should be correct. Now you can rename the Quad hard drive.
    10: Visit Carbon Copy Cloner 's forums and learn how to clone your new perfect boot config to a external drive as a alternate boot method. It will save your bacon.

  • SATA2 drive into a Quad G5 - any gotchas?

    Hi,
    I'm very new to Macs and a film editor. I'd like to install a SATA2 drive inside my Quad in the available slot. Should I encounter any problems or issues with installing and running this?
    Thanks

    If you find that to be disappointing, you might look forward to an expansion card that gets you where you're going:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae4i.html
    There's an external SATA II PCI Express version also on the site. None of them are shipping, but February is their anticipated date, so keep looking.
    There are a lot of RAID's on the market that would make one of these useful...
    If you're just capturing DV (as I am) then the internal bus is more than enough. Each SATA connection on the Quad is independant (doesn't share the bus) so you maximize your performance...but you only get one spare without an expansion card.

  • HELP: Can't Get G5 Quad to Share Internet of Dual Gigabit Interface

    I just got (yesterday) a G5 Quad with the dual Gigabit ethernet connections and I am trying to share my network connection through the Quad (no more ports available on my switch).
    - I am connecting the Quad (en0) directly to a Gigabit Switch and get ip 192.168.2.191
    - I connect a G4 Dual 500 to the Quad (en1).
    In Network utility, the Quad on en1 and the G4 show ip 192.168.2.1 (which is the IP of my router)
    When I try to connect to the internet via the G4, Safari just sits there. No error page, just the spinning lollypop.
    When I connect the G4 directly to the switch, instant access.
    My settings on the Quad are as follows:
    Sharing/Services:
    Personal File Sharing, Personal Web Sharing checked, all others not checked.
    Sharing/Internet:
    Share your computer connection from: Built-in Ethernet 1
    To computes using: Built-in Ethernet 1 not checked, Built-in Ethernet 2 checked;
    Unfortunately, I have no available spots on the switch, and was hoping I could use the secondary port on the Quad to File/web share one more Mac.
    Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • EXTERNAL MONITOR  - FCP 5 - G5 QUAD

    Hi everybody,
    I am having problems with the external monitor using FCP 5.0.4.
    I get no video signal at all in it. The screen mantains the usual desktop piucture .
    I just moved to the Quad from a G4 where I used to edit with my external Monitor without problem.
    My External Monitor is SONY DVI - and the Quad is plugged to it via one of the two DVI back connections of the Quad (as I used to work on my G4, meaning no fw).
    On the VIEW> VIDEO PLAYBACK menu appears
    CINEMA DESKTOP PREVIEW - MAIN as the only choice wich when selected turns my main monitor ( not the external) into the video output.
    Of course I´d like to operate FCP via the Main monitor, and receive External Video in the External Monitor.
    Thanks in advance for any help.

    Monitor thru your camera or deck...
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
    A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
    Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
    Then go View > External video > all frames
    Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
    Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
    Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
    If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
    If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Help ! SBLive5.1 and QUAD CD-P - how to swith digital output to PC

    For the moment, my QUAD CD-P seem to be getting the signal but doesn't recognize it. I thought that maybe like a DVD, the digital output had to be switched to ''PCM'' instead of ''bitstream'' but I'm not even sure if the SBLi've 5. has that possibility or if I am mistaken altogether. I would greatly appreciate any hints regarding how this could be possible and with what kind of connections (cables)I would need.

    The Quad CD-P is a CD player wich acts as a pre-amp for the QUAD 99 series. This device only has digital and optical inputs No right or left inputs. No video inputs/outputs whatsoever.
    For the moment, it is now connected to a Quad 99 - Stereo Power Amp with the usual connectors (like the one for composite video, big RCA connectors, also called 'Digital inputs')
    I experienced some problems listening to the sound of my DVD until I found on the internet that I had to switch in my DVD menu the output from Bitstream to PCM. Afterwards, I had no problem listening to my DVD on the QUAD. Of course, with this configuration, out DTS but no problem with regular DolbyDigital. Quad being such a good (and expensi've) system, It doesn't matter that much. But the SBLi've seems to be a problem. As for my DVD, the QUAD pre-amp seems to be receiving the info from my PC but does not 'render' it. No sound is coming from my QUAD from the MP3s that are playing on my PC altough I tried to connecti it with a mini stereo-jack to digital (red and white) that fit on my sound card. Having had a similar problem with my DVD (quite basic actually), I thought that could be the same thing here. I tried several configuration playing with the 'sound and audio device' options from Windows XP's control panel but to no avail.
    I'm not even sure if it is possible to listen to music coming from my computer on this system. That is why I thought I would ask here 'cause I'm getting confused with something I know so little.
    Thanks.

  • Seven Drives with Red Lights; Admin won't Connect

    We are setting up an XServe RAID tonight for the first time. Connected to G5 Quad, using the smaller Fiber Channel connector cable. Using 500 gig drives. New drives, but used Xserve, from SmallDog.
    1. When we open RAID ADMIN, we get no choices for IP Address.
    2. If it's worth anything, we have a Quadro 4500 video card in there. Takes up two slots. (Possible concern about power consumption).
    3. We have the Apple Fiber Card in the topmost slot in the G5, Slot #4. That slot is labeled 4x.
    4. We have seven drives installed in the left side of the xServe RAID. All seven drives show the red failure light. The Security switch is set to unlock.
    5. We do not know what version of the firmware we're running, because when we do ADD SYSTEM, we can't add the System at all. We get "Connection Failure".
    Any thoughts? Thank you.

    first time. Connected to G5 Quad, using the smaller
    Fiber Channel connector cable. Using 500 gig drives.
    New drives, but used Xserve, from SmallDog.
    In this case, Xserve would not affect the status or function of the Xserve RAID.
    1. When we open RAID ADMIN, we get no choices for IP
    Address.
    I assume what you mean is you did an 'add' in RAID ADMIN and cannot find any Xserve RAID listed so you cannot select an Xserve RAID to be included. Out of the box, Xserve RAID should be set to provide a default address through Bonjour or if there is an DHCP server on the network, it will receive a DHCP address.
    You may setup a direct ethernet connection between your mac and the Xserve RAID network port and see if it's a network switch issue (bonjour only works within the same network)
    The next step is you may need to reset the raid controller (on Xserve RAID). If the array is preconfigured with a static ip address (normally this should NOT be the case), then you may need to reset the controller.

    2. If it's worth anything, we have a Quadro 4500
    video card in there. Takes up two slots. (Possible
    concern about power consumption).
    This should be fine.
    3. We have the Apple Fiber Card in the topmost slot
    in the G5, Slot #4. That slot is labeled 4x.
    This should be fine.
    4. We have seven drives installed in the left side of
    the xServe RAID. All seven drives show the red
    failure light. The Security switch is set to unlock.
    This is very strange.
    Have you tried to power off the array, pull out each drives and make sure the connector is in good condition gently insert each drive back. If possible, reseat the controller module at the back of the array.
    5. We do not know what version of the firmware we're
    running, because when we do ADD SYSTEM, we can't add
    the System at all. We get "Connection Failure".
    Correct but the array should not give you red light even if the firmware is not up to date. (well, anything can happen but I have not seen it yet.)
    Any thoughts? Thank you.

  • New Macbook video import problem.

    Hi all,
    I have just gone and bought myself a new Macbook Pro and I am very pleased with it. From a video standpoint I plan to use it to import and edit HD video from my Canon HV20. The new Macbook only has a Firewire 800 port and so the cable that I would normally use to connect computer and camcorder will not work as it is 'mini' Firewire to Firewire 400. I am assuming that there is/will be a 'mini' to FW800 cable available, but in the interim I am using a Firewire hub that is connected to the Macbook by a 400-800 cable. And herein lies my problem ! Although iMovie8 detects my HV20, it will not display or play or import any footage from the tape ! It just remains on the blue import screen and although the camcorder is merrily 'playing', no footage is actually making it across to the computer. I think the issue is the Firewire hub part of the connection but I thought it best to garner an opinion from users of this forum. Help !!
    Many thanks in advance, kroguk
    PS
    I will also post this on the Macbook forum, so apologies if you see this post twice

    Well, I can't find my Belkin FW800-to-4-pin (9-pin-to-4-pin) cable right now ..I'm doing some "tidying up" ..which is always hopeless for finding things afterwards!.. but I DID buy the other day - in the German Mac specialists, erm, can't remember the name - a Sonnet Fast-something (..which I've just put down, and now can't find..) teeny 9-pin-to-6-pin adapter (..so small that I can't find it!..) and I've just tested that with a Sony HC1 HDV camcorder.
    Using the Sonnet adaptor..
    ..which is mentioned on their website at top-left here: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/adapters/index.html ..on a normal 6-pin-to-4-pin FireWire cable.. I just connected my camcorder and successfully imported HDV from the Sony.
    I tested it twice with iMovie HD 6, in the most adverse conditions: 1; connecting to the 9-pin FW800 socket on a G4 17" laptop (..which is generally too slow to import HDV in real-time..) and 2; looped ("daisy-chained") through the 9-pin FW800 sockets (..one socket from the drive to my Mac, the other socket from the drive to the camcorder..) of an external iOmega FireWire drive connected to my Quad G5 Mac, also with iMovie HD 6. Both imports worked perfectly.
    I'm also trying it as I write this - I just found the adapter again! - to import into iMovie '08 on the G5, daisy-chained through the external disc (..the G4 is too old or underpowered to run iMovie '08..) and that works as well ..though I did have to "kick" the program into starting a new Event; at first the camera transport ran, but no video imported, so I just Stopped and re-imported.
    I bought this adaptor "on spec", as no previous device or adapter had worked properly for me (..converting between 4-pin on a camcorder and 9-pin on a Mac..) and this is the first to have worked, for me. But I have great faith in Sonnet, as they make the extra S-ATA driver card and other bits and bobs which I put in my floorstander G5, and that all "just works".
    Ah; the shop where I bought it is ..hold on a moment.. the "m store" in Munich. (Karsten may know them: when Gravis moved from Lindwurmstrasse to Im Tal, the m store opened up right next door to where Gravis had been before) and they're at Lindwurmstrasse 5a, their phone number - they speak English, too - is 0049 89 24 22 35 24 and their website is ..aaaarggh; they don't seem to have one.
    Anyway; the Sonnet SimplyFast FireWire 400-to-800 Adapter works perfectly - for me - on the end of a normal 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire 400 cable, and importing works flawlessly every way I've tried it ..even daisy-chained through an external drive.
    I can heartily recommend it.
    But - as always - "your mileage may vary" ..meaning that it might not work so smoothly for you.

  • Performance issues with Forms 10G 10.1.2.3.0

    Hi,
    we are on the way to change our application server back to a smaller machine. At the moment we run the AS on a XEON Quadcore machine running at ~2 GHz with 4 GB memory, let's say AS-Quad. This is the case because we needed an intermediate platform.
    Now we want to go to the originally planned harware which is a single Core but Hyperthreaded XEON running between ~2.8 and 3.6 GHz with 12 GB memory, let's say AS-Single.
    OS is Windows Server 2003 SP2 64bit on both machines.
    Hard Disk is on a SAN for both machines.
    Both AS are not loaded right now because were still at the beginning of migrating from Client-Server.
    After installing the AS-Single, and copying/moving/changing the configuration files (formsweb.cfg, default.env, ...) from AS-Quad we think we have now 2 Application Servers which are nearly the same.
    But we see a big difference which hopefully can be solved :
    If we connect to AS-Quad the menu(Tree) and the first Form is displayed in approx 2 seconds, after that a reaction on keystrokes is immediately.
    If we connect to AS-Single the menu(Tree) and the first Form is displayed in approx 4 seconds, after that a reaction on keystrokes is very slow for a couple of time.
    If we start a form which just displays some records from a table, scrolling through the data on AS-Quad is working fine when we keep KEY-DOWN pressed, the rows flow though the screen quite continually. Only very rarely the scroll stops for a few milliseconds which is acceptable.
    On AS-Single doing the same thing, (holding down the Cursor-Down Key) the Rows flow as well, but after some Rows (5 or 10 or maybe 50-100) the screen stops for half a second up to 2 seconds until it continue.
    I know, this is not a benchmark which has to be much more complicate and detailed, but it gives a feeling, that the AS-Single might be not performing quite well and thinking about ~ 400 Sessions on 2 of those Servers when running productive we want to eliminate any problems or changes before getting productive.
    If anybody has ideas, your welcome.
    We also have another question regarding a specific Form comparing Client-Server with Web-Based.
    Running that Form on Client-Server doing an execute query and junping to the last record takes ~ 5-10 Minutes. This is due to the fact that it is a complicated form doing a couple of Master-Detail and also Post-Query on some of those data-blocks.
    the point is that running on CS the CPU-Load (seen in Windows Task-Manager) is nearly 0. Running the migrated Form on the Application-Server and doing the same, Execute and jump to the last Record, the CPU-Load is ~30-40%. Doing the sam on 4 sessions the Load goes up to 100%.
    Is there an explanation for it or do we have to find a reason for it. And if we have to do, where can we start searching for the reason of the CPU-Load.
    Thanks again for your ideas.

  • 2nd gen shuffle disk format FAT32 on a mac?

    Guys,
    my incredibly stable quad g5 has gone "nuts" since I've had my 2nd gen shuffle. It hangs, won't mount external USB drives if the 2nd gen shuffle is docked during startup, lots of other really weird things.
    The shuffle was delivered to my work, so the shuttle was 1st connected to a Windows box, but just to charge it fully.
    when the shuffle is connected to the quad, it only actually shows in iTunes about 25% of the time... whether or not it shows up in iTunes, I can see an "iPod" on the USB bus. I've got lots of USB 2.0 powered ports... changing ports doesn't make a difference at all.
    according to iTunes, the software version is 1.01, which was updated from the shipping 1.00 while connected to the Windows machine. (this might have been a bad thing to do)
    when the shuffle is connected to iTunes, despite the fact that the checkbox allow disk access, most of the time I still see the shuttle mounted as a drive volume. When it doesn't show up, I can still see the drive briefly mount and unmount if I toggle settings or do anything with the shuttle.
    obviously, I've tried restore(s) from the quad, which resets the contents of the shuttle but doesn't change the disk format.
    the shuttle itself operates as expected, it's only while it's docked to the quad that all heck breaks loose...
    Any ideas???
    Thanks

    ah... well, I've already restored one of the times that it was connected to a proper 2.0 powered USB port.
    the first time, it wouldn't come back from the reflashed state, ie it didn't reconnect to iTunes...
    I disconnected, it had no songs on it, but it seemed to work... after a number of attempts to dock, it finally did, and I pumped a bunch of song over to it and it worked...
    I then retried that sequence and the update worked fine.
    it's still a strange beast. for example... although no disk access is allowed, it still mounts a shuffle icon onto the desktop, just no folders are visible... strange...
    I've chosen to downsample to 128kbit AAC, and I'm not having iTunes autofill the shuffle. I unselected the downsample option and clicked apply. one would think that the data on the shuffle would stay as is. Nope, it wiped the shuffle and tried to put the songs that were there back on the shuffle at the original bitrates, which of course don't fit. Reselect the downsample option, click apply, and it repeats the wipe of the shuffle, and is now (again) downsampling and sending to the shuffle. Since it's on the keyboard USB port right now, this is taking quite a while.
    I'll def try on other machines, and indeed without the USB drives mounted, ah, sorry, can't really do that on the quad... the iTunes library is on one of the external USB drives...
    anyway, I get what you want me to try... it might be tomorrow before I can repeat the sequence enough times to say something conclusive. This has been going on for a few days already... I've restarted the quad more times since Thursday than I have in the last year!
    I'm not panicking yet, but am extremely curious what is causing this problem.
    Once again, thanks... I try some more tests and post back

  • Capturing with Gl2

    Hey All,
    I am capturing from a GL2 (DV) via my Quad's firewire 400 to a remote drive connected via firewire 800. When I plug in the camera, FCP 5.1 freezes on me. When I disconnect the camera the program runs great. This is a Quad with an Apple screen that is connected to the Quad via fire wire and USB. When I disconnect the screen's firewire connection, things seem to run fair but not well enough. What am I doing wrong?
    This is my first project using FCP. Previously, I captured through Avid's Mojo into Avid Xpress Pro. That was smooth. Is it possible I can get a cheap capture card or break out box that will be more consistent?
    Thanks

    Not all Canon cameras have connection issues, but hanging around this site I've come to recognize their ability to connect in FCP is the most problematic of all the camera brands. If you have a Canon camcorder, and can not get it to connect up with FCP, the following is a way to sort through the issues and get it to work. Some are elegant - some are ugly.
    Before we go any farther
    -you should be using 'Firewire Basic' as the control protocol. If you aren't, go change it and try again.
    -Also, verify that you have a solid installation of Quicktime. You may want to reinstall it using the 'delete receipts' method. Do a quick search here on the site - it is mentioned daily if not hourly.
    With some confidence that the software installation and camera settings are correct ... the most direct solution is to purchase another, non-Canon device to use as your capturing machine. The Sony DSR-11 is highly recommended for DV work. A deck will save wear and tear on the camera's lightweight drive mechanism and will allow you to permanently connect a NTSC/PAL monitor for proper viewing. If you are working with HDV, you may have other issues ...
    Beyond that, the path you take depends on the model of computer you own.
    1. If you have a G5 tower or a MacPro, capture to a second internal drive with only the camera attached. If you need to move material to firewire drive, disconnect the camera. A second internal drive is quite inexpensive these days if you do not already have one.
    2. If you have a G5 tower (PCI) MacPro (PCI), G4 powerbook (PCMCIA) or MacBookPro (Expresscard 43) with an available slot, purchase the appropriate firewire card for the slot. Connect your camera to the card and you should be good to go. The new card creates a unique bus and will avoid collisions with the external drives.
    3. If you do not have a slot or a second internal drive and you are stuck with the camera, welcome to the camera/drive shuffle.
    - shut down and remove the external hard drive(s) from the system
    - connect the camera directly to the firewire port of the computer
    - start the camera then the computer
    - capture to your internal (system) hard drive
    - shut down the camera and computer
    - disconnect the camera and reconnect the external hard drive(s)
    - start hard drive(s) and computer
    - move captured files to external hard drive(s)
    - edit
    If you output back to tape or wish to view your work on an external Video (NTSC or PAL) monitor, you need to set up the camera to use the firewire out as the A/DV converter or VTR - which means reversing the steps:
    - copy the file back to the internal drive
    - shut everything down
    - disconnect the external drive(s)
    - connect the camera to the firewire port (and the TV to the camera if needed)
    - start the camera then the computer
    - play the file.
    One caveat here - You may have difficulty getting the file back to tape without dropping frames. Playing files off of the system drive is very demanding and they may have a hard time keeping up.
    All in all, if you do not have the option for second bus (i.e. iMacs, eMacs, iBooks, MacBooks) you may want to think about a computer with expandable options next time.
    There is the option of capturing using iMovie, but that brings on it's own set of problems and is not recommended.
    Good luck.
