No copy via Finder, but rsync works.

I have some folders with very large amounts of data in them. When I try to use Finder to move them to a blank DVD, I get the message:
"One or more items have special permissions and cannot be copied. Do you want to skip them?"
Doing an ls -la I don't see anything special about the permissions. I use rsync to move these directires to/from my workstation without error or complaint.
How might I figure out what these "special" permissions are, and how to reset them?
Thank you.

Hi Purchasing Department,
In the direction of permissions, I can think of three things: file flags, Access Control Lists and file locking mechanisms. Flags can be seen in a listing from the "ls" command by using the "-o" option. ACLs will be listed when the -e option is used. Both require that the "-l" option also be used.
The POSIX file locking mechanism is supposed to be voluntary. However, Macintosh has traditionally had some totalitarian locking mechanism like Windoze. You've doubtless noted the Finder balking at ejecting a disk containing an open file. I don't understand it so I won't say any more about it, except to volunteer that you can identify open files with the "lsof" command. Also, a reboot should eliminate the locks so you might try a copy immediately after a boot.
My last observation is to note that the "special permissions" message may not be an accurate error message. Some error messages are catch-alls for failed operations. It's not beyond the pale that you simply asked the Finder to copy more files than it can handle. Try using the Finder to move smaller groups. It might thus be possible to move all of the files and if not, a "divide and conquer" search could produce shrinking groups of files that don't copy, eventually focusing on the problem files. That would entail lots of copy operations but you don't have to keep the results of all of them.
Edit: I just thought of a better way of finding the problem files. If you told the Finder not to copy those then they should show up in a diff of the listings of the source and the target.

    Hello Rattisate,
Sorry to hear you are not able to connect to Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro.  I would be concerned about this too.  You can find information on how to troubleshoot this in the following article:
Troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues in OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
Follow the steps in the section labeled, "Symptom: My Mac does not connect to the Internet."
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • Can't connect via Finder but works with everything else

The Time Capsule is working fine with Time Machine and Airport.  However when I try to connect via Finder, it just says 'Connecting...' and never changes.  When I hit 'Connect As...', nothing happens.  I have rebooted the TC and deleted all passwords from the keychain but that didnt help.  Latest OSX updates and firmware update installed.

I powered down and was relieved to hear the fan jolt and the drive spin so that looks good.
Wireless is currently the only method I've been using to connect to the TC with my macbook because as of right now I dont have a USB->ethernet adapter but I will pick one up later today to see if that changes anything.  The cable modem is connected via ethernet though and that seems to be working fine.
The LED is solid green when the modem is plugged in and flashing orange when it is not.
Here is the log after a power cycle, at first I did not have the cable modem plugged in and attempted to access via Finder with no luck. Then shortly after, I plugged in the cable modem and tried Finder again. Its interesting that attempting to access the drive via Finder does not create any activity in the log.
I will try to cool down overnight and hope I can get at the data.  At this point, my main goal is to retrieve the files.  And then get a new local backup solution asap.  I am currently doing a full online backup to Crashplan but with 500GBs, its going to be weeks before it finishes uploading.

  • Samba via Finder does not work

    Good morning all!
I have a strange problem. When I try and connect to a working samba share (Which works from other macs and windows machines) I get the password box displayed, but this is followed by
Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct
It works fine using the command line (smbclient) and has worked in the past via the finder. It's just stopped today. I'm pretty sure I've made no changes that would have caused this, but can't guarantee it!
Any help on this would be gratefully appreciated!
Dual Xeon Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

IMO, our OS works & works when little bitty things are wrong, but then an applied Update might be totally thrown by that itty bitty thing, and all of a sudden it's a crazy world!
One fellow recently couldn't connect, even after trying many things, so after installing OSX to an External FW HD, booting off that once... and everything worked, then booted off the original "untouched" internal HD... and everthing worked! Go figure !??
We could try deleting some plists, or rolling back smbclient to the 10.4.8 version, or we could try reapplying the latest huge Combo Updater, but before I'd do any of that, I'd get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it, and ensure we have a reasonably good start.

  • Saving DNG as copy via Bridge-doesn't work!

Hi, i just started using Bridge CS3 to download and backup (to an external HD). I download them onto my desktop, converting them to DNG in the process (all is well with that); however, when i ask it to save copies to an external HD, hence creating two sets of files, the copies are RAW not DNG. I don't understand that as the point of making the backup copies is to have an original DNG set of files. I thought perhaps i was doing something wrong but all my playing around does not get me DNG files as copies - is that on purpose? Am i doing something wrong? Or don't i understand the purpose of "save copies to:"?
    All instructions greatly encouraged, please.

    Hi Taiyo,
It sounds like you are using Adobe Photo Downloader via Bridge's "Get Photos From Camera..." menu command.
The "save copies" feature will save copies of the original RAW files during the download process; you are seeing the feature work as designed. Some photographers want to keep both DNG files as well as the original original RAW format files, and others choose to keep only the converted DNG files.
These original RAW can be used as part of a backup workflow, but the "save copies" option alone does not provide the kind of backup workflow I think most photographers want to use. For example if the photographer's intent is to keep the original RAW files as well as the DNGs (I understand that in your case, you just want to backup DNGs), then a robust backup would probably put backup copies of *both* the DNGs and the RAW files on an external hard drive (or more than one external hard drive).
One way you can use Bridge to save backup copies of your DNGs after they've been downloaded is to select the new DNGs in Bridge and use the "Copy To" command in the Thumbnail contextual menu to make copies of the DNGs on your external drive. Right/Control Click on one of the selected thumbnails to bring up the menu. Recently browsed folders and folders you are browsing in other Bridge windows will appear in the "Copy To" list. A "Choose Folder..." command also lets you make copies to folders you have not yet browsed with Bridge.

  • Why can't I connect to my Mac Mini via Finder (but I CAN via screen sharing)?

My problem concerns a quad-core 2.0 GHz Mac Mini Server (mid 2011, I think) with SSD and 3 external hard drives. It's (a) my desktop workstation (b) our Time Machine backup repository (c) iTunes server and (d) Printopia server for our iDevices. That's it. The only thing I use the server app for, really, is Time Machine.
So recently we lost power a couple of times. As always, I ran Disk Utility, repaired permissions and verified the main disk. All appeared well.
But all is assuredly not well. Now, none of my other Macs can (a) find the Time Machine backup volume or (b) connect to the server at all. Whenever I try either thing, I receive the message below:
The network is in flawless shape otherwise. My router is the latest generation Airport Extreme Base Station. The server has a static IP, and I CAN connect to it from my other Macs by clicking Finder, then Go, then entering the IP address -- but ONLY if I use an smb:// prefix!
Moreover, even when I'm connected in this way, I STILL get the message whenever I try to connect by merely clicking the name on the finder sidebar -- or whenever I try to access the machine using Time Machine preferences. Weirder still, I CANNOT connect to the ip address via afp.
Final piece of weirdness: I can also connect to this machine from any other Mac via screen sharing. So please....
WHAT'S MY PROBLEM AND HOW CAN I FIX IT? I've wracked my brains, combed through forums and can find nobody else with this problem, let alone a solution. The problem persists when I shut down the server app.
I'm assuming that either something is corrupted or some setting is afoul, but can't figure out what it might me,
I'm just about at the point of reformatting my main drive and reinstalling Mountain Lion, but am hoping someone can spare me that pain.
    THANK YOU so much!
    Arthur P. Johnson
P.S. I have no problem at all with outbound connections from this bewitched Mini. Just inbound.
P.P.S I will, of course, be happy to provide shots of any other settings you may desire,

  • Personal hotspot working via BlueTooth but NOT working via wi-fi

    Hi,
Would appreciate some help with this! Using an iPhone 4, just upgraded to iOS 4.3, and trying to get personal hotspot working.
Basically, see subject ^ .. I can't get it working. Devices (I've tried iMac, iPad) can see the wireless network created by the iPhone, begins to connect (and appearing connected, from the iPhone) but isn't actually online. Though, I was able to pair my computer and phone and create a network connection via personal hotspot that way. But I want to use wifi, and let others use it...
I'm on Bell Mobility in Canada. Any help greatly appreciated!
    Chris

    Hi lofive,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re running into an issue with devices not being able to connect to a Personal Hotspot created by your iPhone. Try the suggestions in the article linked below, it provides a lot of great troubleshooting tips that will resolve most issues like the one you’ve described.

  • Can't connect via cable, but wireless works.

iMac, Leopard, iTunes, all current. AppleTV only shows up when I disconnect my ethernet cable. At that point my Airport base station (older version) makes the connection. If I turn Airport off in the OS, still no go. I've tried multiple cables too. I've also tried my Macbook pro.
I obviously want the wired connection for greater speed and since the ATV is in the room right next to the computer it's no big deal to run a cable. I swear I had this all running correctly under Tiger, but now I'm starting to wonder if it had been wireless all along and I never realized it.
    Help!

    Hi,
I had the same problem and this worked for me -
Go to System Preferences/Sharing and enable "Internet Sharing" where it says "Share your connection from" choose Airport and where it says "To computers using" select the ethernet port that you've connected the cable from the ATV to on your computer.
Go to System Preferences/Security/Firewall and if you've selected the last option "Set access for specific services and applications" add iTunes to the list by clicking the + and navigating to it.

  • No internet with Safari via ethernet, but it works via wifi

Both Safari and Software update cannot connect to internet via ehternet, although both Firefox and Terminal have connection. However, both of them work via wifi.

Have you verified your built-in ethernet settings? Most of the time all you need to do is select "Configure using DHCP" unless there are any special settings used in your location.

  • Can't connect to internet via laptop, but desktop works fine via Airport

I am having a very strange problem. I have an iMac and Macbook Air. Both on an Airport Express network, connected to Verizon DSL. My iMac never has a problem connecting to the internet. However, my Macbook Air almost never can connect. I am able to get onto my network with both computers without a problem. The only thing is my laptop doesn't seem to see an internet connection. Sometime it works, but mostly not. One thing to note is that Verizon had me recently switch my modem to Bridge Mode so that I could properly use the Back to My Mac service. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Is the Airport Express the router, or is it also in Bridge Mode?
Someone has to be the router and do the necessary Version DSL login (assuming you are on one of the Verizon DSL lines that requires PPPoE logins).
If your iMac is doing the PPPoE login, then it is the only system that will be allowed to use the DSL connection (1 PPPoE login per DSL line). Again this is assuming your Verizon DSL line requires a PPPoE login.
If your Airport Express is in Router mode and is doing any necessary logins to Verzion, then ignore what I have just said.
The next question is what versions of Mac OS X are on each system? Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4), Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5)?
Do you know if you are getting an IP address assigned to the MacBook Air? Assuming the Airport Express is the router assigning DHCP IP addresses, I would expect it to have a 10.0.1.* address.
If the MacBook Air has a good IP address, does it have good DNS servers? You could experiment by assigning your own DNS servers, such as 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 from OpenDNS.org. You would set these in System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> DNS (assuming Leopard on the MacBook Air).

  • When I try to copy files from my computer (just pics) to my iPhone's media folder via Finder under 10.7, I get this error...

I'm using MacFuse to connect via Finder. It worked before, even on 10.7. But since I cannected th eiPhone to my Windows 7 dual boot partition, now it won't work! Maybe it was just a coincidence, not sure. Just returns this error:
"The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)."
I get this one when I try to copy files OFF of the iPhone:
"The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8072)."
Sounds like a permissions error to me. So I fixed permissions on my Mac with disc utility, but same problem. Then chmod with terminal the media folder. Did nothing. So I can't change permissions, and they're not broken. What could've happened? I'm like, locked out of my device!

    Repair Apple Application Support.
START/CONTROL PANEL/PROGRAMS N FEATURES/highlight APPLE APPLICATION SUPPORT, then click the REPAIR button
