No new emacs?

Having just bought one for school and looking into purchasing some more for the new financial year, I can't find any on the Apple store site. Are Apple no longer making them?
I assume I will be able to still purchase them from other places, but I've never had any problem with any item I've bought online from Apple, be it for home or school! So very sad if this is the case...also sad, as I love my emac!

The best thing to do is to call Apple. Some beleave that they are still avalliable to autherised school puchasing agents. If you go to the hardware page on the Apple web sight and scroll down to "Education" it is still listed however, you can't find it on the educational store sight. That is why I beleave you must be and Autherised puchasing agent.

  • Installing OS 9 on a new eMac

I'd like to install OS 9 on a new eMac 1.42 GHz, in order to run classic. The ReadMe that comes with the X install disks refers to a CD upon which the installer can be found. But tuat disk wasn't included with the machine. The name of the disk is: "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc.
Should it have been included? How do I get a copy? Can a commercial install disk of OS 9 be used? I have commercial install disks available (though not heree just now).
    Thanks in advance ...

    Hi, Roger -
One of these Apple KBase articles may help, as appropriate -
    Article #151871 - Mac OS X 10.3: Installing Classic
Article #301408 - Using Restore discs with computers that ship w/ OSX 10.3.7 or later
Since your machine is not OS 9 bootable, you will not be able to use a stand-alone OS 9 Install CD - the installers on those run only when the machine is booted to OS 9 (usually to the CD).
Unlike OSX, an OS 9 System Folder can be copied via a Finder copy process with no loss of function.
Some users have found that copying the OS 9 System Folder from an OS 9.1 or later OS 9 Install CD will suffice. Note, though, that the System Folder on such a CD has a very limited assortment of control panels and extensions, and many services will not be available when that one is used.
Copying an OS 9 System Folder from another (preferrably OS 9 bootable) machine often works better, since those are usually complete OS's. Be sure such an OS is already at the final OS 9 version you want (for Classic, OS 9.1 or later; OS 8.2.x provides better compatibility as Classic). Since the OS 9 download updaters will not run in OSX or Classic, only when the machine is booted to OS 9, you will not be able to use them on a 1.42GHz eMac.
Once you have the OS 9 System Folder on the machine, restart, then use the Classic pane in OSX's System Preferences to select it. In all likelihood your version of OSX will need to update the Classic-specific files in it before it can be used as Classic.
The best choice, of course, is to use the specific version of Classic that came with your original disks. If you absolutely do not have it installable from your original disks, and feel you are missing a disk, contact Apple's Customer Support to see if you can arrange a replacement -

  • Same setup, some brand new emacs refuse to login

OSX server 10.4.7, OD master, file serving only. I have 11 emacs (10.4.7)to set up for teachers. The teachers already have accounts and home directories, and have been using them successfully for quite some time, logging in from our computer lab (10.3.9) clients. I go through the setup screens, and can successfully see the network, connect to server while logged in locally, and get on internet, but when I add server to ldap in directory access - as I have before on identical machines - all looks correct, but when I try to login as a network user (doesn't matter which one) I get the dreaded 'you cannot login at this time. The home folder for this account is located on an AFP or SMB server" The weird thing is that I have successfully set up 3 identical machines (new emacs) and they login fine. 4 (so far) won't, and I cannot find any differences between the setups. I have tried adding server using FQDN, adding using IP address, removing various cache files, preference files, re-boots, etc. from searces of forums for this problem. Nothing has helped. I cannot track this down to a software update on the server (recently updated to 10.4.7, and security patch) because some work fine, some don't. Another post said to run the command 'hostname' in terminal, and make sure it was the FQDN of the server. IT IS NOT - the command hostname returns the name of the computer - but I don't know what to do to fix it. on the affected emacs, in terminal, 'hostname' returns computer name, eg "mrs-smiths-emac" on good emacs, 'hostname' returns computer name.local, eg "mrs-jones-emac.local"

    Hi
    > And so... can ANYONE tell me why on Earth two proper, fully working nearly-new USB flash drives REFUSE to work in this TV, yet an old, pretty much faulty external USB drive DOES?
As far as I know the TV 40TL963B supports an common USB 2.0 HS interface and the USB memory flash can be formatted in FAT16 or FAT32 files system. So there are no special requirements to the USB flash memory

  • Old G3 Panther upgrade to New eMac + Office

I have a G3 iMac running Panther. I've bought an eMac running Tiger, and would appreciate some tips on how I can transfer my documents and Entourage identity to the new machine.
Also, I'll also be upgrading from Office v.X to Office 2004, so any additional help in transfering identities would be appreciated!
    Thanks a lot!

  • How to transfer the songs in iTunes from my old IBM laptop to my new eMac?

Hi, I've recently bought an eMac OSX 10.4.5. My ipod nano is formatted to my old Windows based laptop. How can I transfer my Library to my new computer?

Sorry guys - found a similar question and "iRip" has saved me!

  • New eMac owner, looking to upgrade

Just picked up an eMac last week. It's my first Mac and I'm really enjoying it so far. I am looking to do a few upgrades though.
It has the small 40GB HD which I'd like to replace with either a 250 or 320GB.
    - What do I need to look for? Will a HD like this one work?
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=322702 9&CatId=523
I'd also like to bump up the RAM. Any PC2700/3200 will do correct? Is 2GB a gamble or is it alright to go that big.
Oh and the Superdrive is really noisy, should I be concerned and swap it out or just leave it be?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I suppose you could, but the enclosure will run you only about $30 and not only will it make the transfer much easier since it will save you all that time reinstalling the OS, updates, security patches, etc. etc. but will give you a place to continue to use the internal drive you pulled out of the eMac. Otherwise that internal drive will just go to waste.
I don't know if your new Superdrive will just show up natively under the OS and you will be all set and can boot the computer off the install CDs. Hopefully it will.
But if it doesn't, then you will have to re-open the eMac, put the original Combo drive back in, close it up, boot from the install CDs, install the OS, shut down, open the eMac again, swap the optical drives, close it up for the third time, then boot and install whatever you need to get the new Superdrive working.
Just to give you an idea, I swapped the hard drive in my eMac once using the method of first cloning the old drive to the new drive in an enclosure. Total time to open eMac, swap hard drives (including putting the old one in the enclosure), close eMac and start booting again was about 45 minutes taking my time. If you have to do it three times that's about 2 hours and 15 minutes of opening and closing not counting the time it takes to install the OS on the new drive (say 15-30 minutes not including time to download and install various updates and security patches). So getting close to 3 hours.
Just my opinion of course, but the $30 seems cheap compared to that sort of aggrivation.

  • New eMac.. Hoarraahhh!!!!! BUT........

    Hello
Very excited just bought a new 1.25Mhz eMac off eBay for £300. Super drive 1GB Ram and 80GB Hard drive. Only thing is it was bought in France so has a French keyboard and all documentation is French so wondered if anyone can give me some info on my new machine. I have a few so I will run through them below... any answers are greatly appreciated
    1. I can't work out on the eMac Apple Specs page which category my machine falls into... eMac ATI Graphics or eMac USB 2.0 as neither of these seem to have 1.25MHz processor. I would like to know so I can find the full Spec of the Machine.
    2. I have installed a new version of Tiger 10.4 in English and I now have English keyboard layout in the OS but the keyboard has French configuration keys. Is it possible to take the keys off and rearrange them to English layout without breaking them??
    3. I have a 333mhz iMac with 250GB hard drive init that I want to put in the eMac. At the moment it suffers from the 128GB limit on the hard drive but if I put it in the eMac will it recognise the full capacity or still be limited???
    And thatÕs about it
Again any answers would be greatly appreciated
    Many Thanks
    Andy

    Excellent
I have checked the Apple web page "how to identify your eMac model" and compared the last three digits to the list but can't find my one in there. I sit because it is French???
The last 3 digits are QQH???
    Anyone go any ideas??

  • Oh poop.  Does this mean I have to buy a new eMac?

    Here's the problem.
All my other computers are getting internet connection except my eMac. My router isn't even showing that I have the cables connected to the eMac. While I was gone on vacation last week, we had a lightning storm. The only logical conclusion is that my Ethernet Port got fried.
I've been round and round with Time Warner trying to get the problem fixed, and they've told me the same thing. Fried port. Do I have to buy another eMac!? Or how much would it cost to get it repaired (it's out of warranty)?

    > Uhh - which is cheaper? Buying/installing an airport card on the eMac or just getting a new Ethernet port?
Considering we are talking about an eMac then an airport card is definitely going to be cheaper. To get the eMac repaired to replace the Ethernet port is going to entail a lot of disassembly, time and expense. And that is even if you can get it repaired.
    > And my router is a Netgear WGR614 model. It ways it's a wireless cable modem gateway... but on all the PCs we have that are wireless, you have to use these little USB-key looking things (WG111) that you have to have in the USB slot of your PC to use.
Since your router is wireless, then the easiest thing to do is go wireless with the eMac. An airport card is straight forward and hidden in the eMac so you don't need the USB thingy. Or if you wanted you could go with the USB type thingy. They are pretty cheap and if you go with a 802.11B one rather than the higher speed "g" ones they are even cheaper. For internet you won't notice a different in speed. Only when transferring LARGE files between computers over the wireless link might you notice it.
Another option is if your PCs are using the USB things already, you might look for a wireless card for the PCs. These would install inside the computer with an antenna coming off the back of the card and the back of the computer. Those are fairly cheap. Then once you have freed up one of the USB thingies, assuming they are eMac compatible, you can then move it over to the eMac. I often see the PC cards cheap or free after rebate.
    > How would I go about setting my Mac up to tap into my wireless router feed? Is that even possible?
Of course. Likely when you get the Mac setup with the wireless device, unless your wireless network is hidden, it will likely find it for you and you can log right in. If it is hidden, then you only need to tell the eMac the name of the network to find it.

  • Brand New eMac starts but no video

I have a eMac in a classroom that was bought in the summer and imaged and working fine 3 weeks before school. School time comes around and everything starts up but the video... You can hear the HD loading everything and the startup light comes on as well as the chime. But never any video.
I tried resetting the PRAM, booting from a cd, tried the external to see if it would work... and nothing. I just need a way of narrowing down to what it is, so I can replace it.

Just to clarify, when you were trying to boot from a CD, was this the first OS X Tiger Install CD from the Tiger DVD media exchange (which requires the eMac in question to have a CD-ROM or CD-RW drive only, not the standard combo or super drive) or from the OS X Install DVD? If the boot CD was a troubleshooting / utilities homebrew burned disc, have you checked that the disc will boot other late-model eMacs?
Since you're getting the power light and hard drive noise, the main power management has to be working. There have been problems with Macs failing to wake properly from sleep, but booting from the OS X Install disc should bypass that problem. It would most likely be soemthing blown in the CRT/analog assembly hardware. That's not a user-servicable assembly (the voltage on the CRT yoke is dangerous) and a school Mac purchased this past summer will still be under the one-year hardware warrenty. You could contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or more typically in a school setting, contact the school's vendor.
If there's student or teacher data that needs to be recovered, you can use another Firew0re/OS X equipped Mac as the host to retrieve the files off the damaged Mac as the client using FireWire target disk mode.

  • I am a new Mac user, and I love everything about it!!!

Hi to all fellow Mac users,
That's it, I've finally had enough of Bill Gates and his crappy software. I tell you all now, if I ever saw him on the street, I couldn't guarantee I would say anything nice to him, quite the opposite.
I met a friend from a drama club I go to, and after several playful arguments and games deciding what was better; Apple Mac or Microsoft Windows, I think the Apple Mac seemed to take over everything that Windows can do. Ok, an example, I do subtitled videos for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community... after several months of using Windows Movie Maker (apologies for the foul language) I decided to take my friend up on his offer. After 5 minutes of using Final Cut Pro... I was amazed. 5 simple words sum up my experience of subtitling on a Mac... easy, simple, FUN!, smooth, quick. It was fun to do, a challenge after suffering with another Bill Gates failed program, quicker and easier than I EVER thought it would be, and just to remind you all, that I have been a windows user for 9 years. I loved windows, I thought my Windows PC was my life, the music sounded great, I was happy with virus threats, and pop-ups from everywhere...
I told my kind hearted friend that I have always wanted a laptop, so I could listen to music on the train, whenever I go to visit my folks, I could watch DVD's, videos etc... and he very kindly gave me his old Dell Latitude laptop.. (200MHz, 256MB RAM) It looked like it needed a facelift, and a new battery (the battery charge only lasted 3 minutes on a good day), so it constantly needed to be plugged in. Installed on this laptop was a new piece of Operating System I had never used before. Linux, Ubuntu. My friend told me that it used the UNIX system, and was fairly similar to a Mac. Over the moon, I disappeared never to be seen again, while I figured out how to use this machine. Easy - not bad, fun - ok, however I soon got bored of it. I wanted the Mac... I wanted a mac, REALLY BADLY.
I came into a little bit of money, and now I have bought a second hand iBook G4. I have stopped sleeping with it now... after some strange looks from my girlfriend. (I'm not joking) However, I may have kicked it out of bed, but god I love this thing. No spy-ware... no ad-ware, no pop-ups, no viruses, no 'DLL ****' no goddamned Bill Gates ****-up of a Registry either. I seem to spend more time looking at this, because normally I would be clearing all the goodies that come with Windows... as mentioned above. The mac doesn't have it, it's smooth... even the cat has taken a fancy to it... (keeps sniffing it, it wont be long until he tried to bonk my ethernet port!) Even my grandma could probably use this... and she's 65 something. She doesn't even know how to turn on a computer!
iTunes... iPhoto... iChat... *nods in satisfaction* Open source software, not bad stuff really. The only thing that I have to groan about the Mac is the price of their products... a little on the pricey side, but the one solution to that? Get a better job!
But, what can I say... If you have the same problems with Windows as I have drivelled on about, get a mac... no, get a mac! I will not accept anybody using Windows. Get a mac. I wont repeat myself again, get a mac. Oops.
    Many thanks for reading,
    Kieran
    iBook G4 1.07GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Kieran,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the world of Mac!
My 'rebirth' happened about 3 years ago after staying up all one night trying to clear the latest virus from my Windoze lappy. I've forgotten what it was called, there were so many. I do remember, though, that it was a juggling act trying to download the patch from M$ before the virus stopped me. Apparently that particular one was designed to do just that. (It blocked the download site, or was designed to overload it or something…?)
I'd vaguely heard/read that Macs were supposed to be immune to such attacks so decided to explore…
At the time PC World (dreadful place!) had a special offer on, what was then the new, eMacs. We went and had a look but 'er indoors hated the look of them, as I did. They had one poor, lonely iMac left, a 17", ( the model now known affectionately as the iLamp, ET or iGloo - see avatar ) which had been returned for, supposedly, one dead pixel. They had it sadly stowed away underneath the main display still in its box with a tatty handwritten 'Manager's Special' ticket on it with successive reductions marked. Cut a long story short, we got it for a stupidly low price, about 40% off list, & we gave it a home.
I had great fun playing with it and after only 10 minutes felt totally at home with its GUI. After another couple of hours of 'playing' I thought it was time to do some serious stuff and try and get some of our files off the Windows 'thing' onto the iMac. I was a total tyro at networking and didn't even know how to begin so everything got burned to CDs on the lappy and put onto the iMac that way, where compatible. (I've still never ventured into the dark arts of Win/Mac networking, I've never had to.) What shook me though was, even after only two hours on the iMac, how 'kiddy' the XP interface seemed, like it was a FisherPrice toy computer compared to the Mac (Jaguar) interface.
The iMac soon had company when my iBook joined the family. ('Er indoors quickly appropriated the iLamp for her eBay business) Now I prefer the iBook, the iMac keyboard seems so clunky after the iBook's. My only regret is that I didn't go for a larger HD when I ordered it. 30GB doesn't go anywhere these days. Yet my first, very own XP machine only had 3.2GB!
From those early days we've never looked back. I've gone out of my way to learn more about Macs mainly through this forum and other online resources, but there's no way I'd consider myself any kind of expert. I shy away from most things 'Terminal' sticking to sudo periodics and the like. Occasionally I have to 'face' a Windows machine, and hate it. Everything just seems so difficult and non-intuitive, but maybe that's because I am out of practice. To be honest, I don't really care. Windows is not something that I have the slightest inclination to re-familiarise myself with.
Would I change back? I think I've answered that!
Enjoy your Mac and visit frequently. 'Here' is an invaluable, free resource that can answer most of your questions via the search box or just browsing. And if you're still stuck anytime someone will always go out of their way to help.
    Take care,
    Adrian
ps The iMac's still going strong and I never did find that that 'dead pixel'. His loss, my gain!
pps Watch that cat, they love the warmth of laptop keyboards which, of course, increases the longer the cat lies on it until....poof! Overheated iBook and singed cat. Sometime during the last week or so, someone posted about their cat who, when asleep on the keyboard, could mysteriously activate the password to wake it up! I kid you not, have a scroll back.
ppps I used to live very close to Derby; Ilkeston then later, Heanor

  • How do I install OS9 system folder on an eMac?

I have a brand new eMac. It has OS 10.4.4 installed. I need to install an OS9 system folder in order to run Classic. I have an OS9 CD, but the eMac can't boot to it or run anything from the cd from OSX. The eMac didnt come with a CD that says anything like additional software or Classic Support. I tried booting to the OSX install CD's and doing a customized install. Classic support or OS9 was not an option.
    Any ideas?

No new Macs can boot in OS 9, which is half the reason Classic was invented to emulate 9 while your Mac is booted in X.
The disk set that came with your eMac does contain installers that will give you a System Folder for use with Classic over X, but not on the main disks…
It's probably on one labelled Additional Software and Mac OS 9 but sorry, these things change from time to time and I haven't seen a recent eMac…

  • Moving to a new (shared) Mac without losing my songs

Been reading the support pages & I think I have this straight but I want to ask here just to be sure before I do it. Here's my story:
I'm going to be ditching my old iMac and start sharing my soon-to-be wife's eMac. Her eMac already has an iPod associated with it. I'm not worried so much about the music on my iMac (don't even plan on moving it to the new eMac) but I want to be sure I don't lose the music already on my iPod.
Now here's my plan: I intend to set up my own user account on her eMac. I'll authorize iTunes under that account my with my old Apple Store ID (and deauthorize my iMac). Then I'll set the prefs in iTunes to manually update my iPod. Now, here's the question: will my iPod get wiped when I plug it in to the eMac? Or will it recognize that copy of iTunes as being authorized under my login & leave my iPod untouched?
I hope I've explained the situation well enough. I'll clarify any rough points if it will help me be certain before I do this. And thanks in advance for your collective brain power!

In my experience you are doing the right thing by setting up a new user and having your ipod set to manual update... makes life easier!.. but even without that if you have your ipod set to automatic update I believe you can still link up to another computer without loosing your tunes as long as you check the right boxes when connecting...
If your set to manual update then you should have no problems. I've just linked my ipod (set to manual) to another machine without any problems no boxes to check no fear of loosing my songs!
If it's set to automatic syncing then you'll get asked a question like do you want to join the existing libarary or something.... basically check the appropraite option (double check before clicking!).
Basically all you are doing will be fine!

  • EMac Monitor Problem

Alright, I have an eMac G4, I think its 2nd or 3rd gen.  Recently it has been having some trouble with its screen.
It boots up fine, but after no more than 20 minutes, the screen goes off.  The light doesn't start pulsating and I can't turn it on again without turning off and on again, where I can have another 20 minutes TOPS.  This only works for about three to five cycles before it has to sit without power for about a day before I can see anything.  Booting in the normal OS (10.4.11) and its resore DVD(10.3.3) bolth have this problem.  However, the Hardware Test extended test will find no problem, and the screen will stay on for hours if it is booted from the Hardware Test partition on the restore DVD.  It has had this problem for a long time, but repairing permissions on the harddrive and removing/ replacing the backup battery seemed to work temporarily, until now.
When the screen goes off, I can still eject CDs, adjust volume, and it will play the error sound effect if I punch random keys.
I also have another eMac (first gen 700mhz) that works well except for its CD-RW drive.  If I can't get the newer eMac working, I would like to salvage as much as possible and upgrade the older one.  What all can be transfered? The whole logic board, RAM, HD, Superdrive?  Any Combination?  I am in need of a little more computing power, and been needing a new CD drive for years...
    Thanks!

The best gadget for stubborn dust deposits is a pastry brush. Make sure you get one with a wodden handle and natural bristles to avoid static isses. I have close to a dozen in various sizes and shapes in my computer kit.
Be sure you know the exact version of the eMac you have before looking up take-down instructions. There are two variants: those with USB 1.1 logic boards and 700Mhz, 800Mhz, and 1Ghz processors; and those with a USB 2.0 logic board. The latter are mostl y1.25 and 1.42G processors but there are some uncataloged "edu-only" eMacs with the USB2 board but only a 1Ghz processor. That;s the version that leads be to this caution.
The case take-apart is slightly different between the original 4,4 eMacs and the later 6,4 versions. Some people have broken the power switch while trying to use the older instructions to take about a newer eMac.
The 4,4 and 6,4 codes come from System Profiler (Apple menu > About this Mac and then click the "More Info..." button). It the second line of the opening Profiler screen. A code of 4,4 on your computer means it's USB 1.1 and a code of 6,4 means it;s the later USB 2.0 version.

  • Emac to emac file transfer

hi - the screen on my old emac is gone (just a vertical line in the center of the screen). i got a new emac (used). i want to transfer the files from the old one to the new one. have tried using the migration assistant with firewire but it stalls at "waiting for discs to appear". my old emac is user password protected so that before i get a disc image i would have to log in. i'm assuming that is why the migration assistant stalls out. is there any way for me to proceed with this or will i have to take it to a technician and have him pull the hard drive and the files ? - thanks, beaner

Odd; Patrick's suggestion should work to put the
    Mac
with the bad display into Firewire Target Disk
    mode;
even in Migration/Setup Assitant stalls, it should
still be possible to get at the hard drive
    contents.
even if start up is user id log in protected ? -
    thanks, beaner
actually, i just looked at the migration assistant procedures again and it says to hold down the t key until the firewire symbol appears on the old machine. unless the migration assistant overides user id log in protection, i would not be able to see the firewire symbol until i have logged in to an administrator user account even if the screen was working which it is not. unfortunately, the easiest/cheapest way to do this (Mini VGA to Video Adapter) does not work on my emac so i will have to use a mini vga adapter combined with a db15/vga adapter and hope that one of the older monitors i have laying around will accomplish the mirroring and allow me access to the old computer so that i can enable file sharing and make a connection between the two computers. that is unless someone reading this can correct any misconceptions mentioned here or has an easier way of making this happen. - thanks beaner

  • EMac Display issue

This is a brand new eMac that has been working for 1 week, now the screen shakes and then goes back to normal, it is not one of the models in the eMac extended coverage program or what ever the name is I have already checked this. I am just wondering if it is motherboard or the display. It does this in every mode no matter what I do.

When does the screen shake? If after starting up or waking from system sleep, that's the built-in degaussing and is normal. Otherwise, can you tie the shaking down to any particular actions? If the bottom of the screen shakes when the hard drive is in heavy use, the metal cage that's supposed to shield the CRT may be loose. If the shaking can be associated with sound playing at moderate to high volume through the internal speakers, try switching to a set of shielded external spreakers (you can get external speakers for anywhere from US$10 to 200+ depending on how much quality you want to buy).
Try temporarily moving the eMac to a different location. If the shaking stops, look around the original location for anything that could be a source of EMI --- refrigerators, a furnace on the other side of a common wall, microwave oven, even a UPS placed on the desktop rather than on the floor.
