No ping, no browse

I am looking at a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  The network prefs shows a valid IP.  However, my field tech says that the machine wont't ping or browse.  Safari has been reset and the computer  I'm out of tricks.  Where do I look?

From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. How far do you get?

  • Connected to WRT54GsV4 but can't ping or browse

I have a very interesting problem I am working on for a friend. They have 3 computers in the house they are a vaio laptop with Vista, a macbook, and a HP desktop with Vista. The vaio laptop connects and surfs the internet fine, so does the macbook. The desktop which is wireless like the others will connect to the router, show it has local and internet connection but can not browse the internet or ping. I also can not access the router by going to the default gateway shown by IPCONFIG. IPCONFIG also shows it connected to the DNS and has an IP but it still can't get on the internet. I have tried just about everything. We have used a USB wireless adapter and 2 different wireless NICs all to no avail. One thing that I noticed is that on the vaio laptop it shows it connected to Linksys. On the desktop it shows Linksys as the SSID but when it connects it adds _SES_### which I thought was very odd. I have ran through and reset the tcpip and flushed the DNS all to no luck. We ran a system restore back to a week before when it was working, no luck someone please help!!!!!

I did not try to ping 4.2.2.2. I just know I can not ping comcasts dns servers. I have updated the firmware on the router and it did not work. The computer was able to access the internet until about a week ago, I don't understand what could have changed that I would now need a static DNS.

  • I can ping and browse shares on time capsule, but not make backups from other location connected with MPLS?

    Hi
We have just bought an Apple Time Capsule with 3TB of storage, to make backups of our users macbooks. It works fine at the office1 where it is located, but from our other office, time machine backup doesn't work. The offices are connected through a 100Mbit MPLS connection with no firewall - everybody in office1 can see everything at office2, and vice versa. The users at office2 can ping the time capsule, and they can also browse network shares on it.
The only thing that doesn't work, are time machine backups.
The only difrence I can imagine is, that the the machines at office2 are on a different IP subnet, that is being routed through the MPLS connection.
Is there a problem with the AFP perhaps? SMB and ping works fine, my guess is, that AFP doesn't like the fact that the clients are on a different subnet than the time capsule. But what can be done about this?
    Best regards
    Peter Bak

Thanks Linc ......you were right on the money. Your help has been awsome. I spent 3 hours last night doing stuff with out any solutions. May I ask you another question if you have the time and patience please. My orriginal setup was 2 windows laptops with XP on them connected with a timecapsule attached to a router. Hence the time capsule made a wireless signal aswell as being an external hard drive. On one of the laptops i have a printer attached to it which was shared so that the other computer could print documents through the network however the computer attached to the printer has to be on. Do you know what i have to do so these new 2 mac book pros can print to that printer? Thanks again for all your previous help. Nick

Activesynch is working (both on intranet and internet). owa is working both Networks too.
heres some test data (domain and such stuff have been sanitized contoso.com is the excernal name, contoso is the internal name, casserver is the CAS Server etc.
    my autodiscover is on

any http on autodiscovery.* (my 4 domains) will do a 302 redirect to
    https://mail.contoso.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

Found these instructions in another post:
After doing the below changes , Exchange 2010 and 2013 Autodiscovery working without any error .
    Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity e2013ht -AutodiscoverServiceInternalUri https://mail.mydomain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory -Identity “e2013ht\EWS (Default Web Site)” –InternalUrl https://mail.mydomain.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx
Set-OABVirtualDirectory -Identity “e2013ht\OAB (Default Web Site)” -InternalURL https://mail.mydomain.com/OAB
Set-ActiveSyncVirtualDirectory -Identity “e2013ht\Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync (Default Web Site)” -InternalURL https://mail.mydomain.com/Microsoft-Server-Activesync
    For Outlook Anywhere,
Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory –Identity ‘e2013ht\EWS (Default Web Site)’ –ExternalUrl https://mail.mydomain.com/ews/exchange.asmx

After changing and applying these commands to match my server etc:
    Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity CASSERVER -AutodiscoverServiceInternalUri https://mail.contoso.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory -Identity "CASSERVER\EWS (Default Web Site)" –InternalUrl https://mail.contoso.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx
Set-OABVirtualDirectory -Identity "CASSERVER\OAB (Default Web Site)" -InternalURL https://mail.contoso.com/OAB
Set-ActiveSyncVirtualDirectory -Identity "CASSERVER\Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync (Default Web Site)" -InternalURL https://mail.contoso.com/Microsoft-Server-Activesync
Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory –Identity "CASSERVER\EWS (Default Web Site)" –ExternalUrl https://mail.contoso.com/ews/exchange.asmx
The result of Test 1. Test autodiscover configuration: Test-OutlookWebServices -ClientAccessServer CASSERVER changed, its still not working - but there are less errors now.

  • Problem with DNS resolution

    Hi All,
I am facing a strange problem with the name resolution in mac os x. I have a Lan with a cisco switch and a cisco router that serves as DHCP and DNS server.
In the router I have setup some static host names with the relevant IPs in the local Lan. When ever I try to ping or browse, from within OS X, using the names, I get "unknown host" error. The problem is only with the static hosts I have setup.  The strange part is that nslookup and dig give back the correct IP as it is assigned in the Cisco router.  When I use my iPhone or iPad everything works fine.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Barsam, did you solve this issue?
I have something similar happening to me, I can ping, traceroute, nslookup even use entourage to send and receive emails, but can browse the web with any browser (safari, firefox and chrome)
Last night farefox was working, today I upgrade to the latest firefox version and now firefox stop working saying that can resolve the name, the same error as safari and chrome
I flush the cache, reboot, manually enter DNS, change DNS servers to public ones, but still can't surf the web

  • How to set up different virtual LANs (using the E3200)?

    Hi.
I would like to set up different virtual LANs (using the E3200) so that I can have two different networks that can't access each other.
The E3200 is connected to a modem for internet access.
I would like both networks to have access to the internet.
Does the E3200 alone support creating virtual LANs?
If not, is there another way I can meet the requirement using the E3200 alone (using something other than virtual LANs)?
I'm ultimately thinking that I would need at least one other router.
    So for example,
Router A (E3200) is connected to the modem and setup for DHCP using a LAN IP range 192.168.1.1/24.
Router B is connected to Router A and setup for DHCP using a LAN IP range 192.168.2.1/24.
In this way devices connected to Router A should not have access to devices connected to Router B and visa-versa, correct?  For example, Device X connected to Router A cannot ping or browse files on Device Y connected to Router B and visa-versa, correct?
Would I need to setup anything else on Router B?  For example, do I need to setup DNS settings so that devices connected to Router B can connect to the internet without issue?  Would I need to specify that these virtual LANs are not bridged, and on which router, or both?
I already know how to set up a static IP, DHCP, LAN IP ranges, and static DNS settings on a router, etc.
In regards to wireless devices, I am thinking they would follow the same pattern; so wireless devices connected to Router A (E3200) have access to other wired and wireless devices connected to Router A but not to wired or wireless devices connected to Router B and visa-versa.  However, if wireless devices currently don't have access to wired devices also connected to Router A, then that is fine for now.
    Thank you very much!
    -Rami
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The E3200 has no VLAN support according to the manual. There's no way to configure two separate networks with this router alone.
You will need to add network electronics.
    Ex:
    Managed Switch with VLAN
    Another wireless router with VLAN
If your modem supplies multiple public or private IP addresses then you could put a switch after the modem and two wireless routers attached to the switch.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • CUCM IM & Presence 9.1 and Window Active Directory 2012 R2

    Currently envinronment is
    1.CUCM 9.1
    2.IM & Presence 9.1
    3 AD 2012 R2
i have configured for Jabber for iPhone 9.6.1 and Window 9.7 and use UDS as service profile.
Everything working properly unless i can't use AD user for authentication it appear screen as can't locate server.
Local user in CUCM can login normally and confirm that all AD configuration in CUCM are configured (LDAP directory, authentication and even in service profile)and i can use AD user to login via CUCM and IMAP user option page which mean LDAP integration should be working fine. but i can't log in via Jabber for iPhone or Window.
When i look through CUCM IMAP 9.1 document in LDAP integration support list. it not show AD version 2012 so i am not sure it won't work because it not include in support list or not
This is Problem report from Jabber for iPhone with login user "test". It look like there is network connectivity problem but this client can ping and browse into IMAP correctly

    This issue has been solved!
The root cause was compatibility problem between CUCM 9.1 and AD 2012. We need to upgrade CUCM and IM and Presence to version 10.5 to solve this issue.
Many thanks TAC engineer name Tapan Dutt for solved this issue

  • Leopard won't accept WPA password where Tiger accepted

I've been doing all sorts of diagnostic experiments trying to figure out why I can't wirelessly connect under Leopard using WPA encryption while I was able to do so successfully under Tiger... With Leopard, encryption turned off or WEP encryption works just fine but NOT WPA and that's the encryption I want to use.. I've finally done what I believe to be a consistent and well controlled experiment which is telling me that Leopard will not accept a WPA password that is perfectly acceptable under Tiger... They changed some of the wireless interface gui's between Tiger and Leopard but there is one that appears to be identical between the two and that is the Network Setup Assistant.app that is found (under either Tiger or Leopard) at /System/Library/CoreServices... And I also have a cloned version of my two week old Tiger (10.4.9) system with all my files contained on an external firewire drive. If I boot off that Tiger system and walk through the above mentioned Assistant, when I get to the place where it asks me to enter the WPA password, it accepts that password and moves forward to the next step 100% of the time. I've tried it many times... If I then reboot under Leopard, walk through precisely the same assistant and enter precisely the same password (I've typed it many times, used copy and paste many other times to ensure no typos), instead of connecting I get (100% of the time) a message that says "Sorry, The Password you entered is invalid".... I also notice that it takes a while (maybe 10 seconds) for it to come back with that error for whatever that might be worth... The reason the "100% of the time" above is important is because when I just go to Network in system preferences and walk through that wizard while trying to set up this WPA network, I usually get simply "connection failed" but if I just keep trying eventually it always says it connected (though in reality it never does)... And it never tells me that the password is invalid but this other wizard tells me that 100 % of the time... So when it tells me it connected, I will then go try to connect to a web page and it never works... So why it sometimes tells me it connects I can't say but reality, it never does and now I'm slowly becoming convinced it is because it never accepts my WPA password, never....
So does anyone out there know whether there is some particular format for WPA passwords??? My router is a NetGear WGU624... I've contacted NetGear about this and they are worthless... I might try them again now that I've learned that the password is NEVER being accepted but I don't hold much hope that they can help...
Any ideas about what might be going wrong with passwords under WPA in Leopard???
    thanks... bob...

I've been pursuing the same issue for a few days and just found a resolution (but not the root cause). (Same symptoms seen by Jason Guinn's over on http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195706) I upgraded my PowerBook and MBP just fine but my iMac had the problems you and Jason describe.
    Dig it. This WPA2 password:
    3R3HFVNGxe845xrk
Works for the PowerBook and MBP. But for some reason when I use that password from the iMac, I get the (broken) behavior described. Took my setup to the Genius and he reset my Airport Extreme base station and set the password to:
    testtest
And the problematic behavior resolved. I got full bars and was able to ping and browse everything. I have since changed my password to something more secure. My advice is start with testtest and see if the problem resolves. Then experiment with some stronger WPA2 passwords that work for all your systems.
Incidentally, I had similar issues with the wireless on my TiVO when I set it up about six months ago. For some reason their system wouldn't accept the (long) WPA2 password I was using that the time. At that time I configured the shorter one (3R3HFVNGxe845xrk) for the sake of the TiVO. It's so odd that two vendors have had bugs exercised by particular key material. So wierd.

  • Creating "A" record in Cisco 1841

    Hello All,
We are using Cisco 1841 router. Our requirement is to configure "A" record in the router i.e. we wanted this router to act as a Primary DNS server.
I can bit explain the scenario.
We have connected Internet Lease line ILL to this router with a static ip assigned to it. We  have a domain name registered say e.g. www.xyz.com at www.namecheap.com. We wanted to host the web server inside our office network for our website. We did the necessary changes at www.namecheap.com to the domain www.xyz.com pointing it to our static ip. But we are not able to ping or browse the domain www.xyz.com and we contacted www.namecheap.com technical support and they informed us that we need to create a "A" record where ever the web server is hosted.
I tried to search the internet and i couldn't able to find the necessary online resources for creating "A" record in the router for the domain name. But i could find the below link for creating soa record http://blog.ipspace.net/2006/09/use-your-cisco-router-as-primary-dns.html and created a namesever entries like ns1.xyz.com
But this doesn't create "A" record
Any assistance would be really helpful.
    Thanks
    Sundar

    Dear Daniele,
    Thanks for your reply.
You solution worked great for me.
We are able to ping the domain name.
Now we are facing another problem in reaching our web server. I will explain it below.
    1. When i type the domain name in the browser we are getting a authentication popup asking for username & password, the popup says "a username and password are being requested by says level_15_access ..."
    2. I provided the router username & password it redirect to the following link http://www.sitename.com/archive/flash:home/html/home_aux.shtml. and load the SDM (Cisco router and security device manager) page.
NOTE: we have installed Cisco SDM.
What i wanted is, the site should reach our website hosted in our IIS server inside the network. The IIS server has an local IP address 192.168.1.x and the router gateway has a IP address 192.168.1.y
Any assistance would be really helpful.
    Thanks

  • Unable to connect, server not responding

    Hello,
We've resurrected a machine running 10.4.x from the dead back into use but it isn't happy with our network. It is configured correctly as far as I can tell. It responds to pings, can browse websites, and can mount other drives; however, when I try to mount the 10.4.x machine's drive from another machine I get the following:
"Unable to connect - server not responding." Which I know is completely untrue after testing ping.
I only entered the ip address in the Go > Connect to Server dialog. When attempting to connect from another machine I see a little more output:
"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "afp://10.0.1.7" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)"
I am lost here, any help or observations are highly appreciated.

Hi kssi89, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Well, in pure Apple File System talk... -36 ioErr I/O error (bummers)
Not very helpful, but generally means a Drive quit being Readable or Writable since starting the operation...
    http://fuzzy.wordpress.com/2006/12/10/ioerror-36/
But, in this instance I think it's not even starting to.
Assuming Personal File Sharing is on on that machine & Internet Sharing is OFF, I might try trashing these, reboot and set it up again...

  • FTTH connection proper MTU Size and Jumbo frames

I've recently moved to a ISP that provides a 4mbps connection through FTTH(Single OFC). There is a EPON ONU in my premise from which a RJ-45 lan cable is connected to my Intel DH67CL1 board based PC. manual says, the NIC is a gigabit ethernet card. I tried setting MTU of 8996 and I can ping and browse fine. But, I'm totally in dark whether this value is optimum and works flawlessly browsing sites. How to find and set the proper MTU for a fibre network like this? Is the value correct?
I tried like this decreasing mtu value:
    ifconfig eth0 mtu 8997
    SIOCSIFMTU: Invalid argument
    then,
    ifconfig eth0 mtu 8996
^^^ No error message and it seems accepting.
BTW, from arch wiki, I saw that the driver module(e1000e which is used here) used by NIC  have some bug report filed wr.to Jumbo frame. Am I doing things correctly? Earlier MTU was at default 1500. Please guide. thank you
Some drivers will prevent lower C-states
Some kernel drivers, like e1000e will prevent the CPU from entering C-states under C3 with non-standard MTU sizes by design. See bugzilla #77361 for comments by the developers.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ju … mbo_frames

yeah, i actually talked to support and they told me the same thing. just another example of misleading information from Linksys as here is what the manual and the help page say:
    MTU
MTU is the Maximum Transmission Unit. It specifics the largest packet size permitted for Internet transmission. Select Manual if you want to manually enter the largest packet size that will be transmitted. The recommended size, entered in the Size field, is 1500. You should leave this value in the 1200 to 1500 range. To have the Router select the best MTU for your Internet connection, keep the default setting, Auto.
no where in that description does it say that 1500 is the maxmium.
because this is also a gigabit switch, one would expect that jumbo frame support is not out of the realm of possibility. as a point of reference any other $50 (or less) gigabit switch supports this, but that's what i get for expecting too much from Linksys.
    thanks for the info.

  • Odd DNS problems with wireless using WPA security.

My partner and I have two Macbooks, hers is the white 1.83Ghz and mine is the white 2.0Ghz. The 1.83 with the latest updates (10.4.8) connects just fine and browses fine, no issues what-so-ever. My 2.0Ghz (also on latest update 10.4.8) does connect through WPA as well, but fails to browse with what appears to be DNS failures.
The console spews out messages like "mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en1 (192.168.2.102); delaying packets by 5 seconds"
Repeated refreshes of the browsers (Safari and Firefox) have mixed responses but mostly just timeout trying to connect to anything.
I have tried all the tricks that I have heard about, including reinstalling OS X from scratch (wiping out the disk), removing the preferred connections, removing keychains, deleting the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internet... files etc. All with no appearant change.
The machine connects just fine and browses fine with no security or WEP set on the router. Just seems to be related to WPA. The router does not support WPA2 so I cant test that. I have tried 'nslookup' and 'host' in the terminal and get mixed responses. Sometimes it looks up quickly and fine, all the while the browser is timing out in the background on the same host name. Other times those commands also timeout with messages like:
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
The /etc/resolv.conf shows the nameserver to be 192.168.2.1 (my router) which is correct as it is the same on the other macbook and windows machines. I did, however, try setting the DNS servers manually to my ISPs servers in the Network Preferences but this made no difference. It is bazaar that two macbooks with what I believe to be identical OS and updates (10.4.8) can have such different results. It is definitely related to WPA, but how it is broken and why I don't know - but it appears to me to be DNS related because pinging and browsing to IP addresses presents no problems.
Any tips on things I can try next would be most helpful. Thanks, Chad.
    Macbook 2.0Ghz C2D (white)
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, same problem here since the Airport update.
Used to have trouble reconnecting after sleep but I solved that problem by deleting then reseting my "Preferred Network" setting.
But since the update the MacBook just loses the connection to the internet. It seems to stay connected to the router (Linksys) and can see my iMac on Bonjour but not Internet connectivity.
On your clue, I disabled WPA and it hooked right up and seems to be working fine.
Now I just have to wait and see if it loses the connection spontaneously over the next few hours.
I don't know why one of your MacBooks is working and the other isn't. Were they both updated last week with the Airport update?

  • SAP Web AS connection Error

    Hello Guru's,
we have a problem to connect our ERP (saperp) with EP (sapep).
Following is show by the coneectiontest:
    SAP Web AS Connection
    Test Details:
The test consists of the following steps:
    1. Checks the validity of system ID in the system object.
    2. Checks if the system can be retrieved from the PCD.
    3. Check whether a SAP system is defined in the system object
    4. Validate the following parameters: WAS protocol; WAS host name
    5. Checks if the host name of the server can be resolved.
    6. Pings the server to see if it is alive.
    7. Pings the WAS ping service; works only if the service is activated on the ABAP WAS.
    8. Checks HTTP/S connectivity to the defined back-end application
    Results
    1. The system ID is valid
    2. The system was retrieved.
    3. The system object represents an SAP system
    4. The following parameters are valid: Web AS Protocol (http) Web AS Host Name (saperp.domain.com:8000)
    5. The host name saperp.domaint.com was resolved successfully.
    6. The server saperp.domain.com was pinged successfully.
    7. The Web AS ping service http://saperp.domain.com:8000/sap/bc/ping was pinged successfully.
    8. An HTTP/S connection to http://saperp.domain.com:8000sap/bc/bsp/sap was not obtained successfully; this might be due to a closed port on the Firewall.
Test Connection with Connector works fine.
    Checks:
-Connectiontest to saperp port 8000 with telnet works fine.
-Service test of "http://saperp.domain.com:8000/sap/bc/ping" with browser works fine. ("Server reached successfully")
    -SSO works fine
-All services for BSP are activated.
-No Firewall are present between the Systems
    -ICMP are possible
    -Can't find some entry's in J2ee Log's
-Sec. Audit prot. are no entry's
i have no more ideas, can someone help?!
    regards
    Chris

    Hi,
Don't worry : these test results are meaningless. You should test a real BSP application and see if it works.

  • WRVS4400N causes my DNS server to time out

    Folks,
I have a Fedora 11 box running behind a WRVS4400N router. From the box, standard network functionality such as ping, telnet, browsing, etc. works just fine. The problem is using the DNS server (Bind9) on the box. When this DNS server makes a request to external root servers, the connection just times out.
As you may know, when a DNS request is made by Bind, the destination port is 53 and the source port could be anything from 1024 to 60000.
I used tcpdump to trace the network packets. A UDP packet to port 53 of external root server is sent but the reply never comes back.
I replace the Linksys router with another DLink router, things start to work fine. When I trace the network packets, I see that the reply is coming through. This leads me to believe that there is something wrong with my Linksys router.
I am running the latest firmware on the router. I also did a factory reset to make sure that it is in a clean state.
Has anyone else seen such a problem? How did you fix it?
Thank  you in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Peter

did you try port forwarding? you may forward the port that will work for your DNS servers.
