No sound in KDE [Solved]

Hello.
The sound doesn't work after installing KDE, and I don't know what's the problem.
When I log in, a message appears. It says something about HDA Intel (ALC1200 Analog).
I wrote these commands in a terminal:

Things to check -
check alsa settings as regular user
$ alsamixer
unmute any with "m" and adjust sound up on things like master, speaker, pcm
if you make changes then, as root
# alsactl store
in KDE
Settings>System Settings>Multimedia
Check Phonon>device preferences. Ensure that your sound card is at the top of the list. Use the test button here if you wish.
Check that you have a backend for Phonon. I use phonon-vlc. Install with pacman if you need it.
Post back and let us know:)

  • [SOLVED] gnome update killed sound on kde 4.9.2 system

the recent gnome-updates in testing seem to have broken my sound on kde 4.9.2. My sound system relied on pulseaudio, phonon-gstreeamer and gstreamer0.10. Since the update there ist only a 'dummy' entry in my soundmixer and no sound anymore. Did anybody experience the same?
Edit: Just downgraded with pacman -Syuu with all testing repos disabled. Sound is there again. This IS an update problem.

I deleted pacman.log after a lot of testing, removing and up- and downgrading because it was quite unreadable at that time.
But if I enable the testing repos again, pacman -Syu wants to upgrade these packages:

  • No sound at KDE Startup

Until yesterday my sound worked fine, both at KDE startup and in KDE. After Syu'ing yesterday no sound at KDE startup. However, sound works to extent that aplay plays .wav files. Suspecting that the upgrade altered a config file, I checked the alsa config files and nothing had changed. I don't know where to look in KDE itself other than the sound section, which was also unchanged.
No big deal, upgrading is always a digital experiment. Just curious.
Any intel would be most appreciated.

Correct, arts is running and sound is working. After a bit more research, I realize that I have not stated my question precisely. It is a Systems Notifications issue. None of the System Notifications using sound work, not just the startup sound.
    Many thanks for your efforts.
he he .. ups, i was thinking that arts do not work and you have no sounds in kde --- can be my bad english or not so exact reading :-)
    Control>Sounds & Multimedia>System Notifications>KDE System Notifications
is the only thing to set notifications in kde, but it is a tricky one (the UI is not well made):
    - check if the volume is set ok: in the "Configure - System Notifiactions" check under the button "Player Settings..." if your volume is not muted (you do not need other player)
    - if you select a notification that has sound set ... if you click on the button to test sound, does it work? ... check if the files exist
else i dont know what to try to check why it is not working right ... arts works, so it's not a backend problem ... but a kde-one :-(

  • Sound stuck. Alsa, atiixp and KDE [solved]

    Here`s my story:
I was watching some DVDs, relaxing and all, however when I inserted one DVD and tried to mount it, system froze.
After reboot I tried doing the same thing. Unfortunately, few moments after mount /mnt/cd system froze again.
,,Well what the heck, must be corrupt DVD" - I thought and decided to spend evening listening to the music.
But oh no, amaroK was acting strange.
Music seemed to be stuck on few first accords, it was playing them again, and again, and again.... Well you get the picture.
Since I am using amaroK 1.4 beta2 (it`s great!) I thought it may be a bug.
However my attempts to get some music flowin` with XMMS were unsuccessful too.
After a cruise to kcontrol > sound system > test sound I made sure that it wasn`t amaroK or XMMS that were buggy.
Tried changing to OSS, got some sound, however it was reaaaaally choppy and this time it stuck somewhere in the middle of the track (test sound ,,track`` that is).
Logs (/var/log/everything.log) look strange too, they were full of this:
    Mar 30 23:58:28 localhost [fglrx:firegl_rmmap] *ERROR* map 0xdd325b10 still in use (map_count=1)
Mar 30 23:58:28 localhost [fglrx:firegl_free_buffer_queue] *ERROR* buffer qeue 0xdd325b00 still mapped

EDIT: Just noticed that lshwd does not recognize modules.
I guess it has something to do with my issue.
If hwd -u will help, I`m going to feel real stupid
    EDIT2: Nope, didn`t help.
Tried issuing cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp without X running, went fine.
Tried aplay somefile.wav, sound stuck again.

I use latest archck, I always keep synced with testing.
I have blacklisted modem driver long time ago.
And I`m pretty happy with fglrx.
Even worse, today I`ve tried plugging my USB mouse, everything`s fine, few seconds after ,,startx`` I was able to use it (while no desktop was loaded), however KDE stuck on ,,Initializing Peripherals`` for few seconds and I was unable to continue using USB mouse.
    Touchpad worked fine tho.
Tried reinstalling alsa, hwd, archck, no results.

    Using speaker-test -c 2 -D hw:1,7 does give me sound.

Plain ALSA at the moment. Just wanted to get that working before introducing other layers, like Pulseaudio.
Multimedia settings only has "Default" as a selection.
I've actually configured it as the default device just after posting the OP. However, no difference.

  • [SOLVED] [no actual solution inside] No sound in KDE 4.1 beta

Installed KDE 4.1 beta as found here
There is no sound and device list in KDE control center shows ESD
I installed pulseaudio and added it and esd in the deamons in rc.conf and added the user in the groups and added the auth file in home
Now the module shows both ESD and the hardware device and still there is no sound
    Any clue ?

No miracle with the speakers being plugged in the microphone port

I tried to reinstall OpenOffice but that didn't help.
Any ideas whats going wrong? OpenOffice worked fine with Gnome before I did a clean install.
    -A-

this problem is caused as some files on the install or somewhere else got assigned root permissions so that is the problem. i deleted the folder and everything recreated ok.
I have the same problem, but deleting ~/.openoffice.org2 haven't solved the problem, so I looked up this forum for other solutions and nothing helped.
From other topic: That's not a java problem, I think.
    Any ideas?

  • No sound in Gnome [SOLVED]

Need help with sound. I setup Gnome and when I want check sound it says:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Internal GStreamer error: state change failed.
Please file a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GStreamer.
Maybe something needs to be put in rc.conf?
What I must to do for the fixing this? Any advices would be apreciated
    HOW IT WAS SOLVED:
    pacman -S alsa-plugins (additionally to alsa-utils alsa-oss)
    afterwards: alsaconf
    and sound appeared!

Just tryed playing a wav with aplay and it didn't give me any errors, but I didn't hear anything if that helps anymore. Running a amixer set MASTER 70% unmute also gives me the unable to find simple control 'MASTER',0 error too, though I can change the volume fine with alsamixer so I'm not sure why that is. The correct module is loaded (snd-hda-intel). Otherwise I'm at a complete loss.
edit: amixer set MASTER 70% gives me the same error on an ubuntu livecd where sound does work so that seems normal. I don't know what changed, but I can now open the volume control so the gstreamer error goes away, however I still can't get any sound, be it with aplay or something else. I'm starting to think the solution may be to pass on arch and move to something better.

  • How must be configured the sound in KDE?

    Hello
I have installed alsa and pulseaudio and configure . In gnome 3 the sound work perfect. But in KDE not,  have installed phonon-gstreamer and somedays work fine other not, and i have to select in VLC to use the alsa output, I don't have individual sound control  for apps, some days yes.
And always get a message about "Falling back to default" on start. That troubles i have since the 2012 or even 2009

This is related to randomly switching "places" of detected sound devices. If you want to have sound on the same device, after reboot, after suspend, in KDE, you have to create sound config file, place it in /etc/modprobe.d/
    See this:
    cat alsa-base.conf
    options snd slots=snd_hda_intel,snd_SB-XFI
    options snd_hda_intel index=0
    options snd_SB_XFi index=1
    #options snd_SB_XFI index=2
    #options snd_ctxfi index=2
If i had not created it, than on every reboot, every suspend and wake it up, my cards would switches places and i would not have sound. In this config, my primary card is intel sound card (as a matter of fact this is only the driver for it, the sound card in fact is VIA integrated chipset operating on intel drive) and XFI that has "1' passed to config. What it means? Use as a secod device.
    BTW -
    options snd slots=
is new order of setting devices here, old one is this:
    options snd_hda_intel index=xxxx

is xorg working properly, what graphics driver are you using? also, is the hal daemon running?

  • Alsa does not select correct sound card. SOLVED

I have onboard sound and do not have any additional sound cards installed. Alsa detects two soundcards, but for some reason seems to prefer the one that doesn't work. I am honestly not sure what the other audio device is; I do not have a second sound card installed, nor a modem or a PC speaker or any other audio device that I know of. It has always been that way, and I didn't look into it any deeper than that. I have been using Arch Linux for a about four years and the audio has worked flawlessly until I re-installed a few days ago.
For reference, the HDA NVidia sound card is the one I want to output sound. The non-working one is Conexant CX8801.
    My symptoms are as follows:
    $ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    # cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [CX8801 ]: CX88x - Conexant CX8801
    Conexant CX8801 at 0xf9000000
    1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfe024000 irq 23
As you can see, the Conexant CX8801 (the wrong card) takes the index 0 position.
My usual alsa setup routine is to run the alsaconf script. The alsaconf script edits /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf for me, where it should explicitly identify the HDA NVidia card as index 0. In the sound.conf below, alsaconf generated the first two lines. I wrote the third line as a course of troubleshooting, but it still does not work.
    $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
#THESE LINES WERE GENERATED BY ALSACONF SCRIPT
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
#THIS LINE WAS GENERATED BY ME
    option snd-hda-intel index=0
    $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
    # /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
    # NOTICE THERE ARE NO CONFIGURATIONS IN THIS FILE. EMPTY.
I am by no means an alsa guru, so that's why I've enlisted the help of the forums. Tell me, what am I forgetting? What don't I know?

    Install asoundconf http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=23382
    do
    asoundconf list
to find out the correct name, then do
    asoundconf set-default-card bla
    to set the default card.
asoundconf creates a ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf and sets an include for that fil in ~/.asoundrc

  • Can't get sound to work [SOLVED]

Hi, I'm new to arch/linux in general. Built a computer, and can't get sound to work. I ran Ubuntu for a short period of time, and sound worked there, so I'm assuming there's no hardware issue here.
I'm a little bit stuck as to what I should be doing. Help?

Start with the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … chitecture
If you still can't figure it out and you want help, at least post some info, instead of 'can't get it to work' (this implies that you tried something, but what?).

  • Restoring wine menu in KDE [SOLVED]

Hi, i'm using KDE 4.4.1 and wine. Before i decided to clean up mess in KDE menu, all wine installed menu items were under "lost and found"
    As http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Win … Fix.5B1.5D states, i have edited /etc/xdg/menus/kde-applications.menu
Now i had Wine menu, but i didn't need all items, so i ran kde menu editor, and some items were removed. After relogin, wine menu didn't have "Programs" submenu at all :s. I deleted wine menu from KDE menu
    Now, hot to restore that?
I figure out that all desktop files created by wine are in /home/bagheera/.local/share/applications/
In /home/bagheera/.config/menus/ i have several files:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 bagheera users 15647 03-15 12:22 applications-kmenuedit.menu
    -rw-r--r-- 1 bagheera 1000 3527 03-15 13:11 applications.menu

Do i need "undo" file, can they be safely removed?
    Witch file contains "wine menu"?

Please don't do that. Please read the Forum Etiquette, in particular the section on bumping:
Posting a single word or useless message (bumping) to attract attention to your thread is not allowed. Do your own research, continue to troubleshoot, post the results, and be patient with the community. If people are reading your thread without answering or offering help, you may try supplying more details, or ask to be pointed in the right direction. Often, the reason for posts remaining unanswered is due in large part to the sparse details in the original post itself, or, the obvious availability of solutions in the wiki, on the forum or on the web, and the community's unwillingness to point out the obvious.

  • Application hotkeys and keyboard layouts in KDE[SOLVED]

    Hi,
For as long as I use Linux, I've been annoyed by this particular trouble: change layout from en to ru, for instance, and get your hotkeys (like Ctrl-S) unresponsive. Granted, that the trouble sometimes goes - to come back later on . I tried Google, but no luck. Which is kinda funny, because any bilingual user must be all too familiar with the issue. I can't even be sure whether it's some systemwide setting or an application responsibility.
Now I've run into a something like a perfect testcase :
    OpenOffice 3.0.1 and Firefox 3.0.8:
    (1) In Arch the hotkeys like Ctrl-S and Ctrl-T work in both apps regardless of the keyboard layout. (KDE3 and KDE4)
    (2) In Pardus the hotkeys in both apps work in en layout but do not in ru layout. (KDE3)
    What is it?

Control Center(KDE)->Keyboard Layout->Layout->Include latin layout checkbox needs to be checked. After that Command lines for the respective layouts look like
    setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us
setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout ru,us -variant ,winkeys
    The trouble's gone.
