No startup disk on boot

Okay, this will be a long story and I hope some people would have the patience of reading everything. I just want to tell everything that may have contributed to my problem. My main problem is, when I start my iMac, it does not find any startup disk (not my Mac OS, and not my bootcamp partition).
It all started when I opened my iMac and got an error message, something about a missing/corrupt ntfs.sys file (I default Windows on startup, and I don't know why this appeared, I didn't convert my HD from FAT to NTFS because I don't even know how to do this). So I looked for it on the internet and most of the suggestions said that I should insert my Windows CD and boot from there, and choose Repair. Unfortunately that didn't work, so I booted from Mac instead (holding down the Option key on startup so that I can choose which partition/OS to start from). I successfully booted on Mac. While I was there, I changed the default disk to boot from to Mac (using Startup Disk). And somewhere in the lower left part of the screen, I saw a lock button that when enabled, it will prevent future changes (on what startup disk to start from I guess), so I locked it.
The next day when I started my Mac, it just showed a blinking folder with a question mark. Again, I searched for it on the internet and followed a thousand suggestions on how this might be fixed. These are the things I tried (not in order), and not one of them worked:
1. Safe Boot/Safe Mode - holding down the Shift key
2. Holding down the Option key - before, it showed my 2 available partitions (Mac and Bootcamp/Windows), but now I just get a blank white screen with my mouse pointer
3. Resetting the PRAM - I can tell that the reset worked because previously, I disabled the gong sound during startup, and after I resetted, the gong sound came back
4. fsck - fail. It fsck'd my Mac OS CD (see step 5)
5. Booting from Mac OS installation CD - although I successfully booted from this one, when I ran Disk Utilities, it only showed the CD and not the startup disks. I even tried reinstalling, but when I got to the part that says select which drive to install in, there were no options at all.
Basically I tried everything that I can find on the Internet, to no avail. I'm worried that this could be a hardware problem, although I still have my warranty. It has only been 7 months since I bought it...
Additional infos: I tried removing my USB keyboard and mouse but that didn't change anything, and I didn't add a memory card on it. I never opened my iMac ever.
HELP!

1. This might happen if it wasn't connected well to begin with, but given that you were already having problems with the drive, almost certainly isn't the case here.
2. Useless except as a paperweight. Any data stored on it and not backed up can only be recovered by a professional service.

    External FW drive connected via standard 400 FW cable, is recognized by System Preferences>Startup Disk, proving that it contains a valid OS X system. But when selected, and clicking Restart, first in the System Preferences>Startup Disk window, then in the modal dialogue, the computer beeps, but does not restart.     there might be a timing problem. At the time when the Mac PRAM asks for the startup disk the firewire disk might not be "present" yet. Can you turn on the external disk manually?
    Does the preference pane "remember" your selection of the startup disk or does it change it back to the internal disk?

    I have two ssd drives, one in optical bay and one in standard hd bay. I have a clone of Yosemite on both drives. When I boot and gold down option key to bring up boot menu I am seeing duplicate entries for one of my startup disks. So instead of two startup disks to boot into, I see three. How would I
    go about removing the duplicate?

    Thanks. I had actually tried that with the boot mode set at UEFI and it didn't work, but I gave it another try set at legacy and it works fine.
    The documentation for this seems confusing to me, though. Isn't this RAID card considered a mezzanine card? The documentation here says to enable the onboard controller to get a mezzanine card to work:

    I recently purchased an old iBook G3 (original clamshell model) to run some old Mac games I had laying around (was in a nostalgic mood I guess). It came with OS 8.6 and I installed an old copy of OS X 10.2 Jaguar onto it. It wouldn't let me run in the "Classic" environment, as it has OS 8.6, not OS 9.x. I found I was able to launch the computer from 8.6 by selecting the 8.6 start up disk, and thought I could try running some of my really old Mac apps. Long story short, once I booted up in 8.6 I've been unable to figure out how to boot back up in 10.2. It's been over 10 years since I last used anything older than Mac OS X, and I don't remember where everything is, and how to change the startup disk back to 10.2.
    If anyone knows, please help. I'd really like to avoid doing a complete system restore if possible.

    Two ways:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.

    Use Startup Disk Preferences:
    Open Startup Disk prefs from System Preferences.
    Select the volume from which you want to start.
    Click on the Restart button.
    Click on Restart again.

  • Macintosh HD boot drive doesn't show up as Startup Disk (but boots fine)?!?

    Hi,
    My main internal bootable disk (Macintosh HD) does not show up in Systems Preferences > Startup Disk. If I want to boot from it, I have to either hold down the "Option" key at startup (and the disk appears fine, so I select it), or I have to wait for the machine to explore all other boot options before it finally resorts to booting from the internal Macintosh HD.
    I cannot simply select "Macintosh HD" from the Startup Disk preference pane.
    I have already tried repairing permissions, and I did a "Verify" in Disk Utility - everything checks out fine.
    I even replaced the StartupDisk.prefpane file from another disk, but no improvement.
    How can I get my hard drive to show up in the "Startup Disk" preferences?
    (I should mention that this is a new hard drive that I just installed by cloning it from another bootable drive). The other bootable drive shows up fine in the Startup Disk prefs.
    Help would be greatly appreciated!

    You have to re-partition the drive, which means it will erase everything on the drive.
    Boot from the Leopard install DVD (hold "C" while booting), choose you language, then select Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu. Select the drive (at the left, not the volume indented below it), and click the "Partition" tab. Set "Volume Scheme" to "1 Partition", then click the "Options" button. Select "GUID Partition Table", then click "OK". Enter a volume name, set "Format" to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled" and click "Apply".

  • Difference between choosing startup disk at boot, or via System Preferences

    Not a technical problem exactly, just a straighforward question:  when I choose a startup disk in System Preferences or in the Windows Boot Camp Utility, where is this preference stored? 
    I have noticed that using either of these utlities is the only way to make the disk choice persistent; booting while holding down the Alt/Option key only allows you to temporarily select a startup disk.

    Only difference is when you use the Startup disk applet in System Preferences the system will auto boot to that OS. When using the Option key boot system no matter which OS you select the next time you Reboot the system will boot back to the one that was selected from the Startup Disk selection.
    So if you are auto booting into OS X and then reboot and use the Option key to get the Boot selection screen and select Windows (or another version of OS X) the system will boot to that selected OS. But when you do a Shut down or Restart the system will then boot back into OS X. The Option Key boot selection screen is only for that one startup.
    Same thing go for if you are auto rebooting or auto starting up in Windows and use use the option key to boot into OS X. Then next time the system is restarted, Restart or shut down and then turned back on, it will Auto boot into Windows.
    The Startup Disk option tells the EFI firmware which OS to Auto Boot To. The Option key is a ONE Time Boot option.

    I typically use ARD and Set Startup Disk to image and reconfigure our lab computers (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2789) via a network image, namely DeployStudio.  This works well.  Now I want to be able to set it to a local disk to boot into Windows 7 which we have setup with Boot Camp.  I get nothing but Failed responses.  I am hoping it is a matter of what name or format I need to use. 
    I have tried:
    BOOTCAMP
    Windows
    Windows on BOOTCAMP
    None of these work.  HELP!
    These are iMac 21.5's running 10.6.8.  ARD is 3.5.1.  Same for clients.

    have you considered using Send Unix Command to set boot Volume?
    For instance if you have "Macintosh HD" and "Boot Camp". And you wanted to set the boot volume to "Boot Camp". You could try sending the unix command, as root:
    bless -mount /Volumes/Boot\ Camp -setBoot
    After setting this, if you reboot, the computer should boot to the Boot\ Camp volume. But One the computer boots to windows, getting them to boot back to the mac os x is going to be a whole other story.
    FYI if your boot camp volume is labeled "Untitled" then you would send the unix command, as root, bless -mount /Volumes/Untitled -setBoot.

  • Why does Startup Disk-ing to a 10.6.8 partition prevent my new 10.10 partition from booting?

    An iMac of mine supports 10.10.  So, on a 3 terabyte drive partitioned into three partitions of 1 terabyte each (10.9.5, 10.6.8, Blank) I install 10.10 into the Blank partition.  This 10.10 boots, and I use its Migration Assistant to "pull forward" stuff from my 10.6.8 partition (quite a lot actually, about 400 GB; this takes many hours).  I then use 10.10's Startup Disk to boot back into 10.6.8.  From this point forward, the 10.10 partition will not boot 10.10.  The 10.10 files are there, but only 10.6.8 and 10.9.5 will boot from that volume.
    I've tried this without the Migration and it's the same:  it appears that rebooting from 10.10 to 10.6.8 "spoils" the bootability of the 10.10 partition.  Is it because they are on the same volume?  No:  I've even tried it across multiple terabyte drives (each partitioned into 1 terabyte).
    Huh?  This is a show-stopper for Yosemite (10.10) as if its bootability is this fragile given an older OS X version simply booting, I won't use it until this is fixed.

    I am having the same problem. As a quick fix I've been using a bootable 10.8 thumb drive to boot to from 10.6.8 and then from there I boot off of my internal 10.10.2. It's absolutely ridiculous so I started searching for a more permanent fix and stumbled on your post. I'm still looking and hopefully there is some minor update soon which will allow 10.6.8 to see the 10.10 volume as bootable. Until then... the thumb drive stays with my computer.

  • B&W G3 having trouble finding startup disk

    Hi. Ever since the DVD drive of my B&W G3 died, it's taken an extra minute to find the startup disk. I get the blinking Mac folder plus the question mark that we all know and, well, don't love.
    I've replaced the DVD drive, and currently there is no operating system on the computer. However, I had this problem even with OS 9 installed. I also get the blinking icon when starting up from a CD.
    Does anybody know how I can remedy this problem, so the computer can find the operating system right away? I have two IDE (or ATA, whatever) internal drives. I think the master/slave configuration is correct.
    Any ideas?

    If the system eventually finds the startup disk and boots from it, the problem can be solved by setting a Startup disk.
    If not, the parameters (which hold some essential values that make starting up your Mac simple and painless) have been corrupted. This can be caused by "just because", but it is more often caused by interruption of the main power when the backup battery is in a very weak state.
    The first level of fix on a Blue & White G3 is to open the side door and press and hold the CUDA Reset button (nearest the 1/2 AA-size battery) for a quarter minute. Avoid momentary presses which can be damaging to battery health.
    The second level of fix is to replace the battery and repeat the reset procedure.

  • Trying to change startup disk HELP!

    Using alsoft diskwarrior. Changed the startup disk in the preferences to the CD. Now, can't change it back! The computer automatically reverts to the diskwarrior software to boot from...ideas?

    Restart the computer and hold the mouse button down to force ejection of the CD. The computer will then start normally. Then open the Startup Drive preference and set the startup drive to the internal drive and click on the Restart button.
    In the future you don't need to change the startup disk to boot from a CD/DVD. Simply insert the disc in the optical drive, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the gray startup screen appears. Release the key when the spinning gear appears.

  • Lost Startup Disk in Mac OS X Leopard

    Hi. I've been using leopard with windows vista for a long time now. I recently installed a software by paragon that would allow my mac to write to the ntfs partition. I noticed that after doing this (it might not have been directly caused by the software though), that the windows vista partition no longer showed up as an option under startup disk in leopard. I am however still able to boot to vista using the alt key when the mac starts up. I removed the paragon software and it didn't fix the problem.. I tired correcting the hard drive permissions and repairing the disk, but neither of them fixed the issue. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get the vista partition back under Startup Disk?

    I don't think it was cause and effect or related. Could be but I don't recall seeing Vista in startup disk since Leopard.
    I have Paragon, but it seems to be buggy and slows down Finder. It also may have led to data corruption on Vista. The MacFuse etc NTFS is probably better method right now.
    Some users can't see Vista from OPTION/ALT on their systems but DO see Vista in the control panel Startup Disk.
    Booting from my Tiger 10.4.6 and Leopard DVD weren't able to see Vista partition as available in Utilities: Startup Disk so that pretty much rules out Paragon.
    I'm still looking for how. Luckily I can just pull my OS X drive or boot OS X from external drives anyway and leave Vista along with NTFS data drive and 3rd for page, cache, and other odds and ends.

  • I am having problems trying to boot from my Windows XP startup disk.

    PLEASE HELP ASAP! I upgraded my MacBook Pro 17inch laptop for a larger hard drive. I had my MAC and Windows XP partitions re-installed but I am not able to boot from Windows XP partition. I can see both operation systems in the system preferences of the STARTUP DISK section but when I shutdown my computer and hold down the OPTION key there is no WINDOWS XP icon. I keep getting the error message: NO BOOTABLE DEVICE. INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY.
    I have a very important project to complete this Friday and all of my files are on my PC partition. Could someone please help me to figure out how to get my PC drive to start rebooting? I would sincerely appreciate it. Thanks!

    Feel like wasting several hours? Try installing Windows XP with Boot Camp 2.0 (the version released as part of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard) using NTFS, the file system required for partitions larger than 32 GB. Then watch as it fails miserably, again and again.
    Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
    Please re-install a copy of the above file.
    Sound familiar? You didn’t do anything wrong—this is actually Apple’s fault. Hal.dll, the “hardware abstraction layer”, doesn’t have any particular significance; it just happens to be the first file that Windows looks for as it’s loading. Attempting to replace this file with the copy on disk won’t work, and your boot.ini is probably fine.
    So how do you fix it, then? The solution is a bit involved, but not too bad all things considered. Here are the steps:
    If you haven’t already removed the bad installation, you’ll need to do so. In OS X, open Boot Camp, click Continue, select “Create or remove a Windows partition”, click Continue, and then click Restore.
    Create a new partition as you did before, and start the installation.
    After the computer has rebooted and it’s booted from the CD, type “R” to go to the console. You should be dumped to the C:\ prompt.
    We’re going to reformat the drive as NTFS ourselves instead of letting the Windows installer do it. Type the following and hit Return:
    format c: /q /fs:ntfs
    Then type this to reboot the computer:
    exit
    Hold Option after it restarts, then boot to the Windows installation CD again (I believe it boots to the CD by default at this point, but this is just to be sure).
    Install to C: (be careful not to select your OS X volume!), but—and this is important—choose NOT to reformat. Leave the file system as is.
    Continue the installation process as you would normally.
    That’s it! If things went well, the lovely 256-color Windows logo should load and you’ll be looking at Napa Valley in no time.

  • Boot Camp partition not showing in startup disk or when holding alt key

    I've read countless discussions about similar questions to this one, however, I still haven't been able to find any solution.
    I have an old 2006 MacBook that has just been fully updated and reformatted. I'm running OSX 10.7.5 and Boot Camp 4.
    I went through the Boot Camp installation from an Windows ISO image in my usb drive, where it succesfully downloaded all files needed, and prompted me to make the partition, after which it restarted and was supposed to take me to the installation manager in the Windows partition. I first got the "No bootable driver" error, to which I read I was supposed to restart the computer, hold the alt key, and choose the boot camp partition. However, it does not show up. I only get Mac and Recover drivers.
    I went into the Mac's startup disk, and only the Mac driver is showing, no Boot Camp driver, however, when I go into Disk Utilities, I can see that the BootCamp driver there.
    I read somewhere that I should zap pram and reset SMC, which I did with their instructions. It didn't change anything, I still only get the Mac driver and Recovery when hitting the alt key.
    Does it have something to do with my MacBook being older? That's the only reason I can think that would not allow me to do this.
    Let me know what other info I can give you so that you can please help me!! Thanks in advance!

    In last resort I solved my missing BOOTCAMP partition problem using a program called: iPartition from coriolis systems located in the United Kingdom http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php it took me a coupleof days to figure out the credit card system they have Hint: use your 9 digit zip code to find your credit card address and call your bank if you have an overseas hold on the card!!!! The program found my missing BOOTCAMP partition and restored it. It did take a couple of e-mails to learn to use their program. Let me know how you turn out!

    My Macbook Air running OS X no longer boots when the ethernet cable (via USB adapter) is plugged in - it gets stuck at the grey screen. It starts booting as soon as I unplug it.
    I have already reset the startup disk, but to no success...
    Internet works fine when I plug it in after starting up.
    Does anyone have another idea?

    Yes, it seems that it's a BIOS bug at least on T520, T420s and W520 laptops. Even in "Legacy" mode first stage bootloader doesn't execute if partition type is 0xEE (GPT).
    Hope Lenovo developers will fix it. They fixed something on BIOS 1.31
