No Terminal Cursor

Hello,
Firstly, I would like to thank you for your time.
So, my problem is that I don't have a cursor in terminal. By that I mean the terminal that first visible before any desktop environments are loaded. (xfce4, gnome, kde, etc.) This can be annoying when I type out commands and I need to go back through the command to change one or two letters. I have however found something interesting. If I use nano, the cursor magically appears afterward. If anyone can help me solve this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Is it a framebuffer console? If so, there might be some options to the "fbset" command that can change whether or not the cursor appears.

Mplayer Makes Terminal Cursor Idle

Hi,
A weird problem just came up recently. I would start mplayer from the a terminal (eg. xterm), and after I close mplayer the cursor in the terminal stays idle when I type anything. I could still issue commands and new lines still work, but whatever I type won't appear. It's kind of like typing password in command line. This happens with many terminal emulators (xterm, mrxvt, gnome-terminal, etc.) Any idea what's wrong?

I've noticed that too, but I don't know what's wrong. My workaround is to stop it from the terminal (Ctrl+C) instead of closing the mplayer window.

Cursor / window disappears with rxvt-unicode + xcompmgr + Xft font

The issue described in this thread is still outstanding for a number of users.
It seems to boil down to this: when using rxvt-unicode with xcompmgr and an Xft font (Liberation Mono, DejaVu Sans Mono, and Terminus were among those tested), the terminal cursor will disappear. Typing some text and pressing backspace will cause it to reappear.
Furthermore, the entire window sometimes disappears when switching workspaces in Openbox. Repeated workspace switches or minimizing / restoring the window (via a panel, such as tint2) can make it reappear.
A workaround is to set URxvt*cursorUnderline in ~/.Xdefaults, but some users prefer a block cursor.

The suggestion of installing libxft-lcd was made. I did so, commented-out the URxvt*cursorUnderline line in ~/.Xdefaults, logged out of X, and restarted slim from tty1.
% ldd /usr/bin/urxvt | grep Xft
libXft.so.2 => /usr/lib/libXft.so.2 (0x00007fd35f179000)
% pacman -Qo /usr/lib/libXft.so.2
/usr/lib/libXft.so.2 is owned by libxft-lcd 2.2.0-1
After restarting slim, the problem persists. After rebooting, the problem still persists.
xterm does not exhibit this problem, nor does emacs. I use both programs with libxft and blinking block cursors, and they both work as expected. This seems to be an issue with running rxvt-unicode in combination with xcompmgr. From my POV, it doesn't seem that intel drivers are to blame, but I suppose I wouldn't rule them out.

[SOLVED] Xorg & Firefox lock Gnome desktop, causing massive CPU usage

Hi there,
since I have installed ArchLinux x64 on this laptop (Core 2 Duo, 9600M GT with Nvidia's binary driver 195.36.15-2, Gnome 2.30) Xorg spins out of control every so often - more often repeatedly in an hour, sometimes not for a prolonged time.
This appears to occur (so far only) when Firefox is running (with any site, independent of Flash, but looks as if its main window has to be open) with which it then consumes an entire CPU core, making the mouse pointer and any terminal cursor blink rapidly, as well as windows being selectable, but not e. g. resizable or closable. Any keyboard input to a terminal has to be hammered in repeatedly to be accepted.
It also seems as if it is especially prone to happen if another program (say, gThumb) is ordered to switch to full-screen by F11 with FF's window open in the background, which frequently for whatever reason then also wants to change into full-screen, causing "conflict".
Switching to a console and killing Firefox or starting it via terminal and canceling it there ends each occurrence of the issue. Xorg.0.log does not report any errors.
An upgrade to Xorg 1.8 does not appear to have affected it.
I know this bug (or ones like it) has also occurred to others for years now, but I have so far been unable to find any solutions in reports concerning it.
Any help, please?

edit: I cannot say exactly what apparently ended this issue, however (of the changes I explicitly remember) after the following it does no longer occur:
1. Had to delete the extensions.* (cache, ini, rdf) files as they became corrupted.
2. Removed the Fox Splitter (aka Split Browser) extension.

Well yes, I though about this too, but that certainly wouldn't solve the problem (esp. were it to appear with other apps); besides, there are just way too many features (extensions, scripts etc.) that Chrome a) does not have or b) would be a royal pain to properly add.

Blue or grey screen on boot

Mac Pro 1,1; 10.6.4
On attempting to start up recently I got a screen in alternating shades of blue.
Trying to boot to a bootable CD gives me a 'you need to restart' grey screen.
Booting to the diagnostic works and finds no problems.
Booting in firewire target mode allows access to the HD and repaired some errors with diskutility but did not change symptoms. Subsequent checks show no errors.
Booting to an ubuntu livecd worked fine with generic graphics drivers (up to date drivers available but require a reboot).
Booting into safe mode has the blue screens alternating with a black screen with a white rectangle in the top left (about the size of an old terminal cursor).
Zapping PRAM doesnt seem to change anything.
Recent upgrades include +4GB RAM which I have removed and errors remain with the original 1GB RAM (2x512)
I have also replaced the graphics card recently, GT 8800 stopped working and I replaced it with another GT 8800.
The help pages on blue and grey screens seem to be mutually exclusive but both discuss removing peripherals and non Apple hardware.
Per above, I have tried the diagnostic/safe/boot CD options mentioned in both and the only option I cant try is removing the graphics card (unless there is a way to test a successful boot without a screen?)
I suspect it is either a graphics fault which ubuntu doesnt mind but OSX does, or a more complex disk corruption.
The next option appears to be erasing the disk with firewire/diskutil and attempting a fresh install (not sure why this would remedy the kernel panic on booting from CD).
Some logs have been populated in Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports, I can post fragments as required but am unable to interpret atm.
Any suggestion appreciated.

How can i make 'hide toolbar' the default in finder

Want to get rid of the Finder toolbar aka "Hide Toolbar" as the norm. If it is a matter of turning the feature off completely and never seeing the side bar stuff and all the buttons, so be it.
In short instead of this:
I would like this
for every window I open without having to manually turn the tool bars off each and every time a new (vs old) window is opened.
Incidentally "FooCmd" is a project I am going to build that does this in some way. I should not have to write code... it should be something simple to make the windows in the finder more streamlined (isn't that the new way of Jony Appleseed?)

Found a brute force way of this which walks a tight rope.
First,close all of your Finder windows. Then delete all the hidden files named ".DS_Store" on every hard disk (volume) you have. Then open a finder window on each disk, hide the toolbar with Command-Shift-T, then close the Finder window. After this, your default view for that disk becomes that last view you saw. You have to do this for each disk which is kind of a pain but better than the "open folder, press command-shift-T" for every bloody folder.
To do this via Terminal...
1) Close all Finder windows (hold option key, close one of them)
2) use SpotLight to find "Terminal" and launch Terminal
3) type
cd
and a space in the terminal window after the ">" prompt appears
4) drag and drop a hard disk into the Terminal window after the "cd ". This puts the "path" name in there...
5) press return. This sets the default folder location for Terminal (default directory) to the hard disk
6) run this command (copy and paste it into terminal, press return after pasting)
sudo find . -name '*.DS_Store' -type f -delete
7) when prompted, enter your administrator account password (yes, you need to be admin, sorry)
This will take a long time if you have a big disk, lots of folders, etc. The square 1970's terminal cursor will sit there and blink under the "P" in the word "Password" for quite a while. (shades of the original "Tron" movie). There may be a couple of errors spit out by this command line tool, don't worry it continues on riding it's little light cycle through your hard disk wacking only the ".DS_Store" files as it goes. The program named "find" will be eating quite a bit of processor if you are into checking on that sort of thing with Activity Monitor or another Terminal window with "top".
At the end you will have your display looking something like this (without all the red ink):
You need to repeat for each disk you have. Be aware that if you set the view to the "show toolbar" and then open a new folder below, that button junk-loaded window view default starts to take root again and spreads. (technically it's not a virus but it sure acts like one).

Firefox does not start

i am using Duke 64 bit. 50% of the times firefox just does not start. i had the same problem in 2.0.0.3 and now it is 2.0.0.4 but problem is not solved. when i use command "firefox" in X Terminal, cursor just goes to the next line without doing anything and when i do "ps -x" i can see firefox was *already* running but i do not see any windows of firefox. STRANGE.......this is from my terminal:

i have to use "kill -9 PID" to kill all those 3 firefox-processes. this happens with me everyday when i try to access firefox. any solution ?

Make sure firefox is actually stopped (check "ps axww" output for it). Kill it if it's still running somewhere.
Check your firefox profile area for files named "lock" and ".parentlock". Delete them if you find any.

[Solution] xfce 4.8:Lost titlebar.No mouse pointer.

Thought I'd post this because it just happened to me and couldn't find reference to it in the forums under "lost titlebar".
After the recent upgrade to xfce 4.8, I had the following 5 issues on my Dell D600 Latitude laptop:
1) First thing, I couldn't see my mouse pointer upon booting but if I moved it around on the desktop, I could see the icons lighting up when I supposedly went over them. Once I double-clicked on "File System", a window would open and I could see the old X terminal cursor.
2) I noticed there was no titlebar to what windows did open.
4) Another symptom was the "Window Manager" icon in "Settings" wouldn't open, which points to the problem -- the window manager isn't working.
5) Finally, I could open a terminal window but couldn't get the cursor to take a command. It just sat there.
The answer to all of this is the window manager isn't working which was kind of indicated by #4.
The solution is to open a terminal window, if you can, and type "xfwm4".
If your terminal isn't responding, as was my case, navigate to "/usr/bin" in your filemanger and double-click "xfwm4".

Good point about the problem stemming from X getting killed without saving session. That might have been what happened to me. This only happened on my laptop (my desktop runs same version of Arch and Xfce) which doesn't shut down properly when the battery runs out.
So that might have been what happened to me and I may see this again. (Edit: Yes. It happens everytime the laptop doesn't shut down properly. I now have a link to xfwm4 on my desktop to get everything working quickly until I find a solution.)
I'll keep digging.

Terminal window blinking cursor will not accept keyboard entry

Have SunBlade100 w/ Solaris8.
This is probably a dumb beginner question...
When I enter certain commands at the terminal window - in this particular case
# cat /dev/cua/a
and I hit <return> the cursor skips to the next line, and
continues blinking , and will not accept any keyboard entries.
1. What is the significance of this? Is the cursor waiting further action, and if so, what?
2. How do I get back to the prompt?
3. Under this condition, is it safe to exit the terminal window by closing from the Window menu? (I can't type "exit" because the cursor won't accept keyboard entries, and Help for "closing the terminal" warns against closing from the Window menu because any background processes will not be terminated (and this may cause problems).

Thanks again for the info. <control>+C was exactly what I was looking for. It's coming back to me now-- the last time I had contact w/ UNIX was back in '85 at UC Berkeley (no GUI's back then!).
I'm assuming that <control>+C is a graceful (i.e. relatively harmless way to exit the command.

Cursor in terminal runs ahead of text (KDE4) [solved]

Hi,
I have a very annoying problem with my terminal since my system upgrade to KDE4.
The cursor in terminal window in both Yakuake and Konsole runs ahead of text while I am typing.
In fact as much I write the cursor draws away leaving a growing space between the text and the cursor.
That space remains if I go back with the arrow key, splitting the line in two parts!
The same happens when I am trying to mark a text with my mouse.
The problem improved a bit when I replace the default .bashrc with the one is in archwiky (the space between the text and the cursor was decreased) but the problem (the space) remains. :@
Any ideas?

I can see your problem.
I was hoping you'd post some screenshots, and I'm glad you did. Upon sight of them I immediately noticed something wrong, but it didn't hit me in the head for a few seconds.
You're not using a monospaced font.
Take a look at this:

And now this:

See how in the 2nd example the 'x's line up, although "w" and "i" aren't the same width? This is because the font used for code blocks in most forums (and most terminals! ) is monospaced - each character is equally spaced apart.
Now, I have no idea how on earth your terminal is letting you get away with using a proportionally spaced font (the opposite of monospaced), but at any rate, you'll need to use a monospaced font to get around the issue - "Monospace" is a good, obvious start, and there are many more available, like Terminus (package terminus-font)

Key and Cursor issue in Terminal.app

I am having a problem with Terminal. It is triggered when I do something that involves the Command key, Cmd-C, Cmd-V etc. It causes my keyboard actions to not be recognized until I click somewhere with the cursor (within the terminal window). And at the same time it treats the cursor as if I am holding down the shift key. (it highlighs everything between my last 2 clicks). At first I thought it was just going haywire, but I've found this to be very reproducable. The problem usually persists untill I close all the terminal windows and open a new one.
I have a fresh install of Mountain Lion as of 5 days ago (new ssd), that is when the problem began. This ONLY happens in terminal.
Any ideas what the deal is or how to fix it?

It could be that the defaults are different in your servers.

Locate cursor on the terminal

Is it possible to move the cursor position on the command line so I can print/println to specific coords on the text screen?
I want to be able to make text based apps in Java that can update difference places/fields on the screen rather than in a log type fashion.
Any ideas are appreciated. The only trick I know is to print( "\r" ); to stay on the same line and overwrite it.

If that is the case, you create an iTerm2 profile and specify that ssh command in the iTerm2 profile for that specify connection

New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

I installed Arch on my desktop last week with no issues, so I wanted to install it on an old THinkpad R31. Everything with the installation went smooth, but when I try to 'startx' all I get is a blank screen with a mouse cursor that I can move around. I've installed xorg-xinit, xorg-twm, xorg-xclock, and xterm.
I'm not getting any significant errors in the logs, or even the terminal I issue 'startx' in.
I'm not sure what the problem could be...

I do indeed.
I went ahead and installed LXDE anyways, just to see what would happen. Exact same thing, it looks like everything is about to load but only the mouse cursor shows up. My Xorg.0.log is the same, so I won't post it again.
I do get an error in the console about the openbox menu.xml file missing but I doubt that's related.
