No text boxes in Training Simulation

Hi!
I have been using Captivate 4 since it came out (and C3) before that. I am using a Vista PC to record training simulations for an ERP-system. It worked fine until just before christmas but when I try to record a new project now I get no text boxes, just typing. I have all the settings correct (create text boxes...) but it just wont work. I can get it to work in a Outlook window but not for the ERP-system. There has been no upgrades for the ERP-system so I am using exactly the the same ERP-software as I did when the training simulations did create text boxes.
The only updates on my PC is Adobe Reader. I noticed there was a problem with flash (when trying to view these forums) so I installed the latest flash component.
Any suggestions?

Hi Stefan
Wow, that's a new one on us! Thanks for sharing what you found so that we can keep it in mind for future issues.
Stay tuned for the Mac version of Captivate. It's going to arrive with the next version!

  • Simulation Capture Problem CP4 - last character in text box cut off.

This is somewhat difficult for me to explain, but here is what we are experience. The issue we are having is when capturing a demonstration or simulation of our Windows based form in Captivate 4, occasionally the last character of text in a text box field appears to be cut off unless an extra space is added after the character. However, after advancing to the next field in the capture, the complete text does appear in the previous field. So it is actually capturing the text but for some reason it is not showing on the previous slide capture when that text box is active. We are capturing at a resolution of 1024x768.
Has anyone experienced this behavior? If so what was the solution?
    Thank you.
    Kyle

    Hi Kyle,
Yes, I have seen this one numerous times. Sometimes I find that pressing the Print Screen key after I have finished typing can help ensure that all the  characters are captured correcty. Pressing the PrntScn enables you to capture manually and is something that many Captivate users prefer to do rather than rely on Captivate's automatic capture engine.
To be fair, if you own Adobe Captivate 4, then you might find that the new Capture interim screenshot feature (located in the Preferences dialog) might capture all the text for you automatically. Though I have to say that I still prefer to press PrtScn just to be on the safe side.

  • Highlight boxes on "mistakes" in training simulation

    Hello,
I use CP5 for creating training simulation.
I am looking for a solution that a highlight box only appears when the user does a mistake (sorry, using the german CP version, don't know how the term is called in CP).
So when the user does not click onto the right field, a mistake-message box appears. Additionally I want that a highlight box appears on this event.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Julian

    Hey Lilybiri,
At the clickbox properties, I find the action for on success but not on failure. See the screenshot attached, enjoy the german language
Do I have to activate this action on failure somewhere?
I left the the recording preferences on default, there are no highlight boxes in the training simulation automatically.
    Cheers,
    Julian

  • Text in text boxes getting cutoff after publish

We have an e-learning project with a large number of
application simulations that were built using Captivate 2.0 (build
1177). The published swf files from captivate are loaded via XML
into a flash shell we've built that serves up additional asset
types (text, graphics, video) along with the captivate movies to
make up a module. The captivate movies are the only asset being
served up when used (i.e. they are not sharing the screen with
    other graphics or text).
The problem we are having, is that once a captivate movie is
published, and played via the module shell, some (not all) text
boxes are displayed with the text being cut off on the left. The
left margin settings appear to be ignored, and the text is cut off
by a couple pixels. This appears to be totally random. In the
almost 200 captivate movies we've created, we start out by
recording the application function we are training on, and then
update the captivate with refined text (using HaloYellow text
boxes), and import audio from a narrator.
When the final captivate is published, we can preview using
the _skin.swf and html file, and we cannot replicate the text box
issue, however once we play the swf through our course shell, we
can see the problem text boxes.
One way we have been able to fix this, is to go to the
problem text box in Captivate, select it, cut it out (ctrl-x) and
then paste it back in. Then we check out the newly published
version (in the course shell) and the text box appears as it
should. The problem is, there may now be other text boxes
displaying the problem text being cut off.
In my research on this issue, I did learn about setting text
margins in the .FCM files, but I am finding this is something that
must be planned for before creating the captivate, as it is not
something I can change and then hope to take effect when the movie
    is next published.
If this link works, it should launch a web page with an
example of one of these problem text boxes..
    See
    what we are experiencing..
Has anyone seen this issue? Would publishing these from
    Captivate 3 help?
    Thanks!
    Sean -

    Hi Sean
In addition to what jbradley88 offered, there is one other
factor that could be at play here.
Do the captions look okay on some PCs and not on others? If
so, it could point to an issue with the DPI settings for the PC. If
this is the case, you will want to perform the following steps on
the PCs where this is an issue.
    * Display the Windows Desktop (Easily done by pressing the
Windows key and the D key together)
    * Right-click the Windows Desktop and choose Properties from
    the context menu
    * Click the Settings tab
    * Click the Advanced button
    * Click the General tab
See the drop-down labeled DPI setting? If that is set to 120,
try setting to 96 and see if things improve.
This may not be what is at play, but I've seen it have an
    impact on other display issues.
    Cheers all... Rick

  • Changing recording defaults in training simulation mode

    Hi,
Is there a way to make textboxes appear automatically instead
of hint boxes when recording in training simulation mode (or
alternatively to format hint boxes so that they have arrows
pointing to the relevant text or click box)?
    TIA for any advice.
    A Captivate Novice

    Hi there
I replied to this over in the TechShoret forums, but will
reply with same here just for the sake of being complete and in
case someone down the road searches.
Okay, I'm thinking there are a few ways you would accomplish
    it.
    Method number one:
This method isn't very clean. I'm guessing that you really
want the hint caption to have the callout pointer at various
places, depending on where the caption is as related to where the
Click box is. This method would involve choosing a different
caption type where the Callout Pointer is always perhaps pointing
up and to the left. Then you copy this behind the scenes. The end
result is that Captivate thinks it is using the rectangular caption
type (the type with no callout pointer) and instead, the one with
    the pointer is used.
    Method number two:
After recording, you edit one of the hint captions that was
automatically added. Change it to use the callout pointer you want,
then use the "Apply to all" feature to essentially create the same
effect described above. All hint captions would then use the same
    callout pointer.
    Method number three:
Before recording, instead of choosing a specific mode
(Demonstration, Assessment Simulation or Training Simulation) you
choose the mode labeled "Custom". You then edit the Custom mode so
it includes all the features you would want. In this manner, you
may combine the features of Demonstration mode with Simulation
mode. I'm thinking this may be the approach you will want to take.
But only you can decide that after reading what each approach
    offers.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Show Typing in Training Simulation Mode

    Hi -
I recorded some screens using the Training Simulation mode
and I'm wondering if it's possible to allow the end user to control
the flow until they get a screen where they need to type something
in a text field. At this point I would like to just have the end
user see the typing appear on the screen. After the typing appears
the end user could then click on the appropriate button to continue
    with the Training Simulation.
For example: How to Save a Word Document.
The end user would click on File to display the File menu.
Then click on Save As... to display the Save As dialog box. The
name of document file they are saving would automatically type
(show typing) for them then the user clicks on the Save button.
    Is this scenario possible?

    Hi Chris,
My apologies for the misunderstanding. You can't directly do
what you want in the Training Simulation recording mode because by
default the mode settings eliminate capture of typing and replace
it with the text-entry box. Sorry.
There are several ways to handle the situation, though. One
is to record in Demonstration mode. Be sure that "Record
Keystrokes" is checked, on the Options > Recording Options
dialog. The keystrokes will be recorded for you. Of course, then
you will have to add the interactivity (click-boxes, etc.) that
would have been entered for you in the simulation mode.
Another option you might like better is to go to my friend
and fellow community expert Paul Dewhurst's web-site and get a
text-animation called "aimee typing". After downloading it, just
    place it in the folder:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
2\Gallery\TextAnimations (for Captivate version 2), or
    C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Captivate\Gallery\TextAnimations
    (for version 1).
    Paul's web-site is at:
    http://www.raisingaimee.co.uk/
and what you need is located in the "Downloads" section (see
panel on the left for links). There are a bunch (13?) of
text-animations there, and if I were you I'd get them all - be
aware you may have to register and/or pay Paul for them, but they
are worth far more than he asks - if he is charging for them.
With Paul's text animation you can add "live" typing effects
on the fly, controling the font, font size, font color, and typing
speed. It does take a little planning to get things to appear
correctly and at the right time, but is not very difficult.
To answer your last question, "Show Typing" should
never appear when you have recorded in Training Simulation
mode - because typing is never captured in that mode. Good luck and
    have a great day!

  • Convert Interactive Training Simulations into Demostration

I need help PLEASE I am using Captivate 2. I need to find out
how to convert an interactive Training Simulation into a
Demonstration (that will not require the user interaction like
inputing text in the required boxes elc...).
Please email me with the solution to [email protected]
    Thanks

    HI Guys,
Regards Rick's comment - so did I. Use the "Apply to All",
that is. And as I said (as Rick said), it doesn't work - or at
least not reliably enough to say this is the "fix" you are looking
    for.
Regards this entire thread, I have a problem with all of your
varying suggestions (naturally). You are all correct, and you are
all incorrect. There is no single way to handle the problem
presented by " sazzam", because he or she (it?) didn't give us
enough information to establish one-single-correct-way to handle
    this.
BTW, sazzam, we don't do personal email - sorry, but that
would defeat the entire purpose of these forums ... the sharing of
problems, solutions, and ideas. So you will have to reconcile
yourself to coming back for the answers. Also, sazzam, it is
considered bad policy (security-wise) to insert your email address
in the body of your post - the spiders are already forwarding it to
    their malware masters.
Here's why everyone is wrong: What needs to be done depends
largely on factors that were not made available to us. For
instance, if, as some folks do when inserting click-boxes or
buttons, the object and slide times are set to very very short
periods (a trick so the developer can use the "Continue" action
without the user waiting until Sunday for movement to the next
slide) ... then simply changing attributes on the buttons or
click-boxes won't work - the movie would progress so rapidly
without the "pause" enabled that it would become functionally
useless. There are other things we would need to know to offer a
single "right" (or a "fastest") solution - but that should give you
an idea of what's wrong with offering a cookie-cutter solution, as
you all have. Yeah, I know, once again I've made everyone mad - but
at least if you are mad at me, you are not upset with each other.
Thanks - and have a great day folks!!

  • Dynamic step-by-step instructions for training simulation

I'm looking for some guidance with an idea for having a dynamic step-by-step list for a training simulation created in Captivate 7.
The default behavior when creating a guided training simulation is for the steps to appear in a text box nearby the click box. Instead, I'd like to stack the step-by-step instructions in a panel on the left side of the screen that would sit next to the simulated interface on the right side of the screen. All of the high level steps would be visible throughout the simulation and each step in the panel list would be highlighted as appropriate.
I began with Lilybiri's Knockout blog post ("Create and Use a 'Knockout' Master Slide"), which seems like a possible solution, but I haven't yet gotten to the point of adding my dynamic instruction panel.
In essence, the dynamic panel will function as follows:
Step 1 in instruction panel is highlighted at start of simulation.
Learner clicks associated step 1 click box in simulation interface (as instructed in instruction panel).
On click of step 1 click box, step 2 in instruction panel is highlighted and step 1 highlight disappears.
Learner clicks associated step 2 click box in simulation interface (as instructed in instruction panel).
And so on through all steps listed in the instruction panel.
I'm working on mocking something up using variables and advanced actions to achieve the dynamic instruction panel and want to overlay it on the left side of the screen. I'm thinking it would sit on top of the left panel in the Knockout.
In various posts, I've seen that it's not advisable to insert a Captivate SWF into another project file, so it seems that Lieve's Knockout approach is the way to go. I am happy to tackle the technical aspects of this on my own, but first want to confirm that it is even possible with Captivate or if it would make more sense to use Flash. Has anyone done something similar or does anyone see any issues with this approach?
Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!
    Nancy

    Hi Lieve,
Thanks for replying. I'm using Captivate 7.
I'm hoping to work through it myself and then possibly post something to help others who may see value in something like this, so having you confirm that you believe it's possible is helpful - thank you.
I've worked out the basic technical approach and now need to integrate my instruction panel with your Knockout approach. If I can get it working, I will definitely share.

  • Cap 3 Training Simulation

Using the Training Simulation mode, when text entry is done
during recording, the text that is typed in shows as a click box
rather than a text entry box. Is there a setting I'm
    missing?

    Hi SueCJ
Sounds weird!! If you look in your time bar on those slides
where you would expect a text box, do you see a click box or a text
box?? If it is a text box, then select it in the Time bar and the
various components associate with a text box should appear (minimum
= text entry and click box or "submit" button). No insult intended
if you already know the following, but each text box defaults to
the 2 items mentioned and the user is "expected" to type the entry
into the text box itself while the "submit" button is there to tell
Captivate that said user has finished entering data. I tend to make
this button transparent in the button properties and place it on
the next logical place to click. Further, the slide navigation is
based on the text box properties, so check the contine/next slide
    etc. options there.
If all of the above is kosher and you can and want to, then
please mail me the .cp file by clicking
    HERE

  • Bullets and Transparent text boxes

    hello,
I've checked out the postings already for this issue and
appreciate Ricks tip on fixing the font blur issue. However, I have
another bug with bullets in transparent text boxes.
Upon preview or publish of a project, I see a ghost color (a
little lighter) of my background color which is light blue . So,
basically the text box is no longer transparent and looks really
    bad.
    Any ideas,
    Lisa

    Hi Rick,
Let me describe what is happening a little more clearly. Here
is the basics so maybe you can reproduce it. I belive I did come up
    with a fix for myself.
    1) Add a background image to the slide that is merged not an
    overlay image
    - My image is a png file imported into the library and added
to every slide. It has a solid light blue background with a dark
blue strip on top and a brand from the client at the top left (very
    basic)
    2) Add a transparent text box caption
    3) Add text that includes bullet points
Result: When you put a text caption with bullets over a slide
background that is an image(even solid color) you get a ghost that
oulines the text caption dimensions. If the text caption doesn't
have bullets, the ghost outline doesn't appear, but the text is
blurry. Obviously the text can be fixed by highlighting on
    character in #C0C0C0.
My temporary fix: Because the ghost ouline seems to appear
when a text caption with bullets is on top of a background image, I
modifed my background image so that the light blue part (this is
the area when all the content will be) is actually transparent and
no longer a color. I then set color for all slides backgrounds to
be the light blue that was origninally in my image. This seems to
work, but there are some color fading issues that I need to explore
    and work out more.
Thanks much and look forward to pushing the boundaries of
Captivate once I my head around it more.
P.S If I have a background image on each screen (branding and
consistent purposes), when I set up a simulation, do I have to
merge each screen shot into the background or can the screen shots
created by Captivate just overlay my background image.

  • Acrobat 9: Control over font in text box

Versions: OS X 10.8.5 with Acrobat Pro 9, latest patch.
I am experimentally preparing a four day training course by adding my instructor information to a PDF of the slide show.  There are only 850 slides, so it makes sense to experiment with this small document.
All is going well.  I have created some custom stamps.  Acrobat has only crashed twice, losing not more than two hours work as a result.  I am optimistic I will be good to go in 10 more days.
I have just copied some test into a text box and it copied as black and blue text with a larger font than the standard red font that I have been seeing until now.
It occurs to me that this implies there may be some control over the text.  I realize that Acrobat is not meant to be a document preparation tool, so I hunted around somewhat for a way to change the text box text to not-red, gave up and I have been putting up with it until now.
However, there are implications (but no clearly stated solutions) that there is a way to change the font, size and colour of text in text boxes.
Do you know how?  I cannot work it out, nor can I find a solutoin.  I can see that the Commenting preference pane offers Small Medium and Large text.  There does not seem to be any other control other than the style (italic, bold, superscript, subscript) that is offered in the context menu.
    Hints?  Thoughts?

    Pryanja.
Thanks again.  If offers a dropdown for Colour, a box for style (plain, bold italic etc) and a button marked more, but they seem to do nothing at all.  They don't change what I type, and they don't affect selected text.  Looks to me tha they just take up some toolbar space.
Is it possible that it does not work on Mac?

  • Coding - returning the number of characters in a text box.

I am in the process of creating a cell phone simulation/animation in Edge Animate CC for use in a Captivate course. Basically, when a user clicks on number buttons on the virtual keypad, it displays the numbers in a text box , just like an actual cell phone would display the phone number on the screen as a caller is dialing. So, the user would click seven buttons and a seven-digit phone number appears on the virtual phone screen.  This part of my animation works great and all seven digits appear, but I would like to modify the code so that a hyphen appears after the third button clicked. This way, the output better resembles an actual phone number instead of just a string of seven digits.
Here is an example of the code I currently have assigned to the #2 button on the virtual keypad:
    var text = sym.$("PhoneNum").html();
    text = text + 2;
    sym.$("PhoneNum").html(text);
PhoneNum is the name of my text box on the stage where the digits appear as each keypad button is clicked.
In order to incorporate the hyphen after the third button clicked, I need to somehow return the current number of characters in the PhoneNum text box, then create an if/else scenario that applies the hyphen after the third button clicked.
Does anyone know how I can use either JavaScript or jQuery to return the number of characters currently in the PhoneNum text box?

    No problem!
Basically the thing to remember is that unless you are needing to pass html to the object, you can use text() instead. text() also gives you the raw text without any html formatting (so you can assume what .html() would return)

  • Multiple Text Boxes on 1 Slide...

There have been a lot of threads about this, but I've been unable to find an answer to the specific situation a colleague is facing.
We are simulating a mainframe system where the user enters multiple values, then presses enter.  The client wants the simulation to replicate the system as closely as possible, and therefore we would like the user to Tab between the fields.  After the last field is complete, the user should press Enter to move forward.
I can't get the text boxes to validate upon exit/lose focus...
In the screen shot below, the text boxes are highlighted for the sake of this thread.  The yellow boxes have shortcuts of "Tab". The last text box (highlighted in purple)  has a shortcut of "Enter".    My hope was that, if a yellow box was not correct, when the user pressed  tab, they'd receive the failure caption, but this has proved wholly  unreliable.  Sometimes it won't appear at all, sometimes the failure caption for a different yellow-shaded text box appears.
The text boxes don't seem to validate in any discernable order (not by the order they are in the timeline, not by reverse order in the timeline, not by the order they focus when the user presses tab).  I've tried putting an advanced action on the last text box which should check each text box variable against its correct entry and only move forward if each are correct.  This didn't work at all, it would still allow the user to move forward.  I've tried setting it up so that each text box appears after the pause of the previous text box...  I've tried setting the "on complete -> show -> next text box" (maybe I'm missing some key component of this method, 'cause I couldn't get the target to display on this at all)...
Thanks in advance- I could use any clues you have!

    Hello,
I thought you wanted one Advanced action in which you will check the entries in all the TEB's (stored in user variables)? Do you think the 'focus lost' event is a good idea to trigger that since you are not sure that it will happen? And if you use the Submit from the 'last' TEB (that can be doubled as a shortcut), this means that you are imposing the sequence, not, you will have to be sure that this one will be the last TEB to be entered? Or do you want an advanced action that will be triggered by all 'focus lost' events and by all the Submit's?
What do you mean exactly by multiple custom scripts? Perhaps my lack of knowledge of English is puzzling me? You can trigger only one advanced action with an event, but this action can have a multitude of condtional actions, an unlimited sequence of standard actions and even combinations of standard and conditional actions (as I have been describing in the articles I did mention). If you are thinking about something else, please try to explain by giving more details.

  • Pressing enter to tab to next text box in a tabular form

    Hi all.
Does anyone know how to configure an Apex tabular report so when a user hits enter, it will tab to the next text box?
    Thanks

I've been looking at this for a long time. My conclusion: because the BROWSER defines what actions the keys take, you either have to re-map the keys (a scary proposition) or just train your users to get used to that feature of web applications. A normal application has the capability to re-map the keys; web apps aren't quite as flexible in this regard.

  • How can I compare data to a series of values in a text box?

I want to paste a series of asset numbers into a text area and use it to query the asset numbers column in a report to return only those assets whose asset number is in the text area any on know how to do that?

If your text box contains the values concatenated by a string (: or ; or , or some other) you can use it in a query by replacing ':' with your concatenation string, similar to this example:

      FROM emp
    WHERE INSTR (':' || :p138_empno_textbox || ':', ':' || empno || ':') > 0Denes Kubicek
