Node/NodeList problem [XML/DOM]

Problem: IJava code is not printing out the 2nd node but rather printing the 1st one twice from the XML file.
                        Node firstChildren = doc.getFirstChild();
               String nodeName1 = firstChildren.getNodeName();
               System.out.println(nodeName1);
               Node nextNode = firstChildren.getNextSibling();
               String nodeName = nextNode.getNodeName();
               System.out.println(nodeName);the XML looks like this:
<Office>
             <Employee Employeename="Ryan">
                        <Position>Claims</Position>
             </Employee>
</Office>The Java code prints out:
Office
Office
Also is there a way/method to get the values of an element without making the element values into attributes? getNodeValues returns null for elements.

Not sure your question, You should only have one node at the root of the tree, so you shouldn't be getting two different nodes. walking the roots 'siblings'
An element doesn't have a 'value'. What we perceive a an elements value is just child nodes (Text, Elements, etc) that you need to walk with getFirstChild, getNextSibling, etc.

    OK, using DOM, for example :

  • Unmarshalling a DOM node to an XML file with JAXB

    I'm trying to unmarshall a DOM node to an XML file using JAXB. However I keep receiving a NullPointerException. This only seems to occur when I create the DOM Node from scratch. The stack trace looks like the following:

  • Jbuilder compiler problem with xml DOM - please help.

    my problem is that I am using jbuilder 4 professional to compile/run my code.
    However I want to use the XML DOM but jbuilder does not appear to support the necessary packages for use with XML.
    How can I get round this.
    Can I compile instead from the command line - I am using JDK1.4 which supports the java xml packages necessary. Or is there a way of adding the necessary files to my project?
    thanks, B

    Add the required jar files to your project properties->classpath in JBuilder
    The only problem is that. I have been using JBuilder without any problems.

  • Nullpointer exception while multiple users reading from XML DOM object

    We are getting a null pointer exception when we are trying to read from a Static XML DOM object . We are getting the exception in weblogic 7.1 very rarely but started getting the exception in weblogic 9.2 more frequently. When multiple users are trying to access the Static variable we are getting null pointer exception. I think it is a memory related issue. Making the whole method synchronized is resolving the issue. But that is not the right thing to do. Can any one know what might be the issue here?

  • Question about XML DOM de-bugging.

    I have programmed the following class as an excercise in using the DOM and in recursion.
    I'm having trouble,however, in debugging my iterate() method.
    Sometimes it fails to print certain outer tags.
    I'm faily confident there aren't any problems in using entirely static methods in the class.
    I simply want it to iterate over all Nodes in the xml document,
    and print them to the file in correct order.
    Is there anyone out there who could debug my iterate() method?
    import org.w3c.dom.*;

    I edited your code slightly and I was able to get the correct output.
    I changed the following line:

    for (int j=0; j < len; j++)I have included the complete source below:

  • Xml in JTree: how to not collpase JTree node, when renaming XML Node.

    Hi.
    I'm writing some kind of XML editor. I want to view my XML document in JTree and make user able to edit contents of XML. I made my own TreeModel for JTree, which straight accesses XML DOM, produced by Xerces. Using DOM Events, I made good-looking JTree updates without collapsing JTree on inserting or removing XML nodes.
    But there is a problem. I need to produce to user some method of renaming nodes. As I know, there is no way to rename node in w3c DOM. So I create new one with new name and copy all children and attributes to it. But in this way I got a new object of XML Node instead of renamed one. And I need to initiate rebuilding (treeStructureChanged event) of JTree structure. Renamed node collapses. If I use treeNodesChanged event (no rebuilding, just changes string view of JTree node), then when I try to operate with renamed node again, exception will be throwed.
    Is there some way to rename nodes in my program without collpasing JTree?
    I'am new to Java. Maybe there is a method in Xerces DOM implementation to rename nodes without recreating?
    Thanks in advance.

    I assume that "rename" means to change the element name? Anyway your question seems to be "When I add a node to a JTree, how do I make sure it is expanded?" This is completely concerned with Swing, so it might have been better to post it in the Swing forum, but if it were me I would do this:
    1. Copy the XML document into a JTree.
    2. Allow the user to edit the document. Don't attempt to keep an XML document or DOM synchronized with the contents of the JTree.
    3. On request of the user, copy the JTree back to a new XML document.
    This way you can "rename" things to the user's heart's content without having the problem you described.

  • How to typecast string to xml DOM element in java

    hai
          i need a string to be converted to xml DOM element in java, can any help me
          i have done in this way
         NodeList children = lParentRule.getElementsByTagName("parentruledetails").item(0).getChildNodes();
    for
    (int i = 0; i < children.getLength(); i++) {Node nod = children.item(i);
    if
    (nod.getNodeName().contains("parentcustomdetails")){Element parentcustom = (Element)nod.getNodeName();   // i get typecast error at this line}
    i need to convert the string to element
    can any one help me
    Thanks in Advance

    Hello. You can't cast a string to an element, you need to create that element.
    Maybe this can help up: http://www.genedavis.com/library/xml/java_dom_xml_creation.jsp

    A valid XML file always has a defined encoding. If nothing is defined in the XML header then it's UTF-8. If your XML file doesn't define anything else and still contains non-UTF-8 encoded data, then it's invalid.

  • Using XPath with the XML DOM

    I have just started to use the XML DOM API. One thing I cannot see yet is an easy way to use XPath to get the value of an element.
    What I would like to do is pass an XPath expression like this:
    \EDIFACT\ORDERS\NAD[2]\NAD01\NAD0102
    into a method, and get the value of the element returned to me.
    Does anybody know if there is a method of one of the DOM interfaces that would provide that kind of functionality, or am I going to have to traverse the nodes of the DOM tree manually to do this?
    BR,
    Tony.

    Hi Tony,
    I read your posted question - I have the same problem.
    I think that the method find_from_path_ns (or find_from_path) is the only "xpath"-like way to get a value.
    BUT the syntax is very limited so you cannot use all good features of xpath
    To traverse the nodes manually is (in my problem) unpractible - the xml-structures are different and it's horrible to traverse the tree.
    I need xpaths like ' //x/y[3]/z[a='MS']' . I know, the performance is not very good but for small XML-messages fast enough
    Do you have any solutions?

  • Moving a node unformates the XML File

    Hi,
    when I move a node in the XMl tree, I got some text format problems. I move the node like this:
    if(children.item(j).getNodeName().equals("UML:Flow")) {
      target = children.item(j).getParentNode().getParentNode();
      target.appendChild(children.item(j));
    }                    in the XML is an empty line for each moved node and the moved nodes are all in one line without linebreak like this:
    befor moving:
    <UML:ActivityGraph>
       <UML:Namespace.ownedElement>
            <UML:Flow xmi.id = 'G.0'/>
            <UML:Flow xmi.id = 'G.1'/>
            <UML:Flow xmi.id = 'G.3'/>
       </UML:Namespace.ownedElement>
      </UML:ActivityGraph>after moving:
    <UML:ActivityGraph>
       <UML:Namespace.ownedElement>
       </UML:Namespace.ownedElement>
       <UML:Flow xmi.id = 'G.0'/><UML:Flow xmi.id = 'G.1'/><UML:Flow xmi.id = 'G.3'/></UML:ActivityGraph>I want to have something like this:
    <UML:ActivityGraph>
       <UML:Namespace.ownedElement>
       </UML:Namespace.ownedElement>
       <UML:Flow xmi.id = 'G.0'/>
       <UML:Flow xmi.id = 'G.1'/>
       <UML:Flow xmi.id = 'G.3'/>
    </UML:ActivityGraph>i'am thankfull for any ideas how to do this

    DrClap gave an excellent advice here. Still, I'm not quite sure how to do it. My approach that goes like this
         private void eliminateWhitespace(Node history) {
              NodeList nodeList = history.getChildNodes();
              for ( int i = 0; i < nodeList.getLength(); i++ ){
                   Node node = nodeList.item( i );
                   if (node instanceof TextNode)
                        history.removeChild(node);
         throws an EJSs.setUncheckedException from the EJSWrapper of the bean that calls the method. I assume that's due to TextNode residing in the org.apache package and so having nothing to with the text nodes DrClap is talking about?
    Anyway. Could you suggest a more promising approach to disburden my XML-file of the whitespaces the op mentioned?
    Thanks a lot in advance,

    You should use the following function instead:

  • Payload XML DOM Object Update using Java Embedding

    Hi,
    I have a Java Embedding activity which updates the payload after making
    a call to a local EJB. The EJB sends back updated information. In my Java
    Embedding activity i try to update the payload nodes with the new information.
    It get's really cumbersome to do this sort of thing in BPEL. Basically i am trying
    to remove an existing node in the payload and replace it with a new node.
    I did so may things that i really don't remember what are they. Finally i managed to
    update the payload with the following code.
    org.w3c.dom.Element payload = (org.w3c.dom.Element)getVariableData("inputVariable","payload","/MSG");
    org.w3c.dom.Element oldNode = (org.w3c.dom.Element)getVariableData("inputVariable","payload","/MSG/TSLData");
    org.collaxa.thirdparty.dom4j.Element tslElem = com.collaxa.cube.xml.dom.DOMFactory.convertToCollaxaElement(oldNode);
    oldNode = (org.w3c.dom.Element)getVariableData("inputVariable","payload","/MSG/REC");
    payload.removeChild(oldNode);
    msgElem = com.collaxa.cube.xml.dom.DOMFactory.convertToCollaxaElement(payload);
    msgElem.add(recElem);
    I feel that there no proper interface to update the data in the payload values with
    nodes, string etc. It would be nice if we don't have to work with
    com.collaxa.cube.xml.dom.DOMFactory
    org.collaxa.thirdparty.dom4j.Element
    the collaxa classes.
    We need to have more than setVariableData, bascally good payload manipulation API's.
    Let me know if there are any alternatives to do this.
    Thanks,
    Senthil L

    I have been having the same difficulties. Were you able to find any documentation or javadocs for the Collaxa libraries? If so, I would greatly appreciate locating them.

  • Node refnum comparison (XML parser)

    Hello,
    I am trying to parse an XML document (actually an Open Office doc) with the LabVIEW 2009 built-in XML Parser. My problem is to identify if two Nodes are actually refering to the same point in the XML or not. For example:
    I do a search for specific table cells. The result is an array of Nodes. I want to know if they are on the same table row. So I go up to the first "table row" parent, of which I get the reference. Now I would like to compare two of these parent "row" references, to check if they refer to the same table row. Use of the "equal" LabVIEW function seems not to work (always pretends the reference is different, even if pointing to the same table row actually).
    Any idea ?
    Vincent

    Hello,
    Thank you for your interest for the topic. Here is a small example, which is described here:
    Assume you have an XML with following content:
    <XML>
    <Parent>
         <Child name="A1">
              <Feature />
         </Child>
         <Child name="A2">
              <NoFeature />
         </Child>
    </Parent>
    <Parent>
         <Child name="B1">
              <Feature />
         </Child>
         <Child name="B2">
              <NoFeature />
         </Child>
    </Parent>
    </XML>
    Let's say I need to find all the <Feature> nodes and check whether or not they belong to the same <Parent>. If I look for all the <Feature> nodes by sequentially parsing the whole XML (with a combination of "Next Sibling" and "Next Child" navigation), I will certainly know when I switch from one <Parent> instance to the other one, but this is very inefficient for large XML. I have chosen to use the following method instead:
    - with the "Get Elements by Tag Name Array" method for the XML document (DUXGetElementsByTagName), I get an array of all the <Feature> nodes in the document. These are node references to <Child name="A1"/> and <Child name="B2"/> in the above example.
    - from both of these nodes I go up to successive parents until I find the <Parent> node reference.
    - now I have two different references to <Parent> nodes. I am almost over, I just need to check whether these are the same <Parent> node, or if they are different instances of a <Parent> node (as it is the case in the above example).
    How can I do this last step ? Comparing the node references directly with the general "Equal?" built-in LabVIEW function does not work (result is always FALSE, even if both node references point to the same node instance). What is missing here is a sort of "IsSameNode" method, with two node references as inputs, and a boolean as output, that would just return TRUE if both references are pointing to the same node in the XML...
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Vincent
