Noise reduction won't display properly in LR 3.4.1 Develop Module

I encountered this issue first time last night - noise reduction will not show in "Fit" view of the Develop module for pictures that have a graduated filter applied as well. Having said this,
- The pictures display correctly in Library Loupe view (Fit and 100%)
- The pictures display correctly in Develop module when zooming in to 100%
- The pictures display correctly in Develop module when clicking in history on Luminance smoothing (first picture). Selecting the next step in the history, Add Graduated Filter, displays the picture without noise reduction (second picture - I tried on a virtual copy the other way round - first have a graduated filter and then apply noise reduction, but doesn't work either. Noise reduction just won't display in Develop module / Fit View once a graduated filter is applied as well.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour or, even better, found a solution? I already tried purging the raw cache, no success. Working on Windows 7 / 64bit.
Thanks,
Andreas

Jeff, I had difficulty understanding this same issue as presented at the link I posted above. With my low-noise Canon DSLR RAW images I simply couldn't see the onscreen rendering issues they were talking about. It even appeared this might be unique to Mac platforms and Windows 32 bit OS, since my Windows 7 64bit system didn't appear to have this issue.
Following suggestions to shoot a picture at -4 F stops and then increase exposure by +4 F stops in LR helped me get a better understanding:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3857767#3857767
Granted this is an extreme shooting situation, but it helps demonstrate what happens when using exposure, fill and HSL sliders to increase exposure significantly (+2 to +4 EV) in specific areas of the image. Now you have noise that will be visible in smaller exported scaled images, perhaps even those sized for posting to the web.
The issue is at lower ISO settings (camera specific), view sizes less than 1:1 have no noise reduction applied (Mac & Windows) or sharpening applied (Mac & Windows 32). There appear to be platform differences in the way sharpening is applied, because on my Windows 7 64bit system sharpening is applied at all ISO and all view sizes including "fit" view, but noise reduction is only applied at higher ISO settings – the same as all others have described. I wanted to point this out since it is one of the reason I had difficulty duplicating what the OP was seeing.
We know sharpness and noise reduction settings interact with each other, so it is important to have both applied in the onscreen image to determine their affect. Using images with additive Exposure, Fill and HSL slider settings approaching +2 to +4 EV, there is simply no way to see accurate rendering without both noise reduction and sharpness applied at all view sizes, including “fit” view. This can occur with low ISO images, not just at some predetermined camera specific high ISO where noise becomes predominant.

  • Photo page won't display properly in safari

    Hi everyone!
I'm completely new to building websites and need some of your expert advice?
For some reason my photo pages won't display properly in Safari but ok in Firefox?
It worked fine a week ago and I can't think what I've done wrong since I republished last night?
    http://www.abeledo.talktalk.net/losavellanos/House.html
    Can anyone help?
    I'll buy you a pint!
    Cheers

    No luck unfortunately.
I changed the background to a solid and made the changes that you suggested roddy, but neither seemed to work. I know I must be doing something wrong? Do the photos appear ok with you roddy? All I see, is half the page i.e nav bar, top image, 'the house & garden etc text and top half of the darker box where the thumbnails should appear. And this happens with all 3 photo pages currently on the site.

I've been clearing my cache in both browsers every time I republish.
I've also tried upgrading to the new 3.0.3 beta Safari? You'd think - out of all the browsers- iWeb would work seamlessly with Safari wouldn't you? - Firefox is fine.
Do you think I should start from scratch?

  • GoDaddy site won't display properly

I have been working with a client's Dreamweaver site; however, when I went to upload it to GoDaddy, the pages and images don't display properly.  How can I fix this?
Will I need to change the links for every missing graphic, so that they come directly from the root?  Is there an easier way?
This particular site has multiple level and sub-folders, etc.
    Please HELP!!!!

Thank you so much!  I hadn't thought about that.  Since it's a one-time fix, I'll go through and change any absolutes to relative.
    Thanks again.
    Sincerely,
    Lynn

  • When I try to add motion to a photo, the image just becomes white and won't display properly--what am I doing wrong?

Although the photo settings display properly and seem to indicate what I want will happen (the sliders work and I can set start and end times, etc.) as soon as I click the check box for "ken burns effect" the image becomes white and stays that way unless I undo my actions.  Very frustrating.  If accepted, it stays white and does not show the original image when the movie is played.  What is going on here?

On the right hand side of the Photoshop window I used the Levels under "Add and adjustment". The tag for the photo in the upper left corner says IMG_3639 copy.psd@25% (Levels 1, Layer Mask/8)

  • Animated GIFs won't display properly in Mail.app

I have a weird problem with animated GIFs received as attachments in Mail.app. On my Mac mini, they're only displayed as the first frame within the Mail message window and the animations don't play. But on my iMac G4, the same messages display the animations properly within Mail.app. Both Macs are currently running Mac OS X 10.4.4, but I've observed this problem since 10.4.3. I have the same software installed on both machines. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

  • Imac 2006 monitor won't display properly

The left half of my monitor is fuzzy and black on my 2006 imac.   I have a cable to connect an external monitor.  How do I get the external monitor to work properly.   Right now when I plug in the external monitor, all I can see is when I move the mouse left to right (and off the imac monitor, it continues onto the external monitor.    I am a beginner with all this.

Open System Preferences, click on Display, click Detect Displays, select your external display, and check the box for Mirror the Internal Display.  That should make the external display what the internal display is supposed to show.
You might have to fiddle with Resolutions to get the external display to appear properly (if at all, because it is probably a bad logic board or graphic processor, which will make external display not work properly, and is a very expensive repair).
    Good luck.

  • Album Cover won't display properly

I just purchased a TV Season of a show, and every episode downloaded properly, but the Album Art cover does not display correctly. I really hope I don't have to delete, and purchase this season again. Has this happened to anyone else? How is there a way to fix it?

I have a 9 GB iPOD touch and this very thing happen to me. I can see the artwork via iTUNES but some of the artwork would not transfer to the iPOD. When looking at the album covers on the iPOD you'd just get a blank area where the album artwork would be.
I was unable to find any place inside of iTUNES or on my iPOD that would allow me to select or deselect artwork artwork as has been stated above.
My solution was to do a restore to factory settings. After I did this and did not use the back up... that may have been messed up too... All my artwork was there and the iPOD seems to be acting much better... it was sluggish after I updated to 2.x
Anyway if anyone is having issues and you have not resolved it try doing the restore as if it was a new iPOD.

  • Some fonts have wrong "internal names," won't display properly in font menu

Several fonts which I have acquired over the years have a peculiar but bothersome problem.
The fonts' "file names" in the Finder are perfectly fine, and the files are named what they're supposed to be named. And when the fonts are "installed," they work perfectly fine in all applications, as they are supposed to. But here's the problem: the fonts are mis-named in each application's "font menu." In my case, most of the font names (which are of the standard English alphabet and have standard English font titles) instead appear listed as a long string of Chinese characters.
As a random example, a font called "Holiday Ranch" made by FontDiner is not listed alphabetically between "Hoefler" and "Impact" in my font menus, where it ought to be, but instead is listed at the end of the font menu list, after "Zapfino," as a long string of Chinese characters. This wouldn't be such a problem if there were only one or two fonts misnamed this way, but when (as I do) you have 25 fonts at the bottom of your font list, all of which are long strings of incomprehensible characters, then it becomes a problem indeed.
The fonts come from a variety of sources, so it can't be a flaw in just one company's coding. I contacted (as per the example above) FontDiner, but so far they have no response. But for other mis-named fonts in my collection, I don't even know who designed them or where they came from, so I can't ask the designer for a solution.
Keep in mind that all of the fonts work perfectly fine, once I've tracked them down in the big morass of hard-to-find misnamed fonts at the bottom of my font menus. They work in all Apple applications like TextEdit, they work in Adobe products like Illustrator, they work in MSWord -- they work everywhere. The only issue is the naming.
Also, the file names are all correct. In the example above, the file name for "Holiday Ranch" is "Holiday Ranch.ttf". And when I inspect the font with Linotype's "FontExplorer X," it is listed properly as "Holiday Ranch." But here's the key: When I open the font file in Apple's "Font Book" (v.2.2.1), the name is indeed listed there as a long string of Chinese characters, and when I install it onto my computer using Font Book, it unfortunately uses that name.
I've tried downloading a wide variety of "font tool" programs, but none have been able to fix this problem.
I also tried (using FontExplorer X) "Cleaning system font caches" and "Cleaning application font caches" and restarting, but that had no effect whatsoever. I don't think it's an error on the part of OSX, I think that the fonts are simply misnamed internally, or that something went awry when the font designer converted the fonts from one format to another, or something like that.
I think the simplest solution would be to just re-name the fonts internally. But how? I can't find a way to do it. Even the optimistically-named freeware program "Font Renamer" did not change the internal names.
Has anyone else ever experienced this problem, and if so, how can it be fixed? Thanks.

As for free downloads to play with: unfortunately, the FontDiner ones are all commercial and thus not free...
They do have some free fonts. At the bottom of the first page (after the lead in page), click the "Free Silverware" link at the bottom. The fonts that come up on that page are all free.
I downloaded four of those fonts at random. All work as expected. That doesn't prove though that the Holiday Ranch font doesn't have something wrong with it.
Kurt, as I noted above, I already did empty all font cache files and restart. Unfortunately, that did not fix the problem.
    Oops! Sorry, missed that.
So I think the problem is not that there's anything wrong with my OS, but rather that the person who made the font simply goofed when giving it a name!
It seems to point that way, but you're seeing the issue across fonts from different vendors. I would believe it's either the OS, or Font Book itself.
Your tagline shows you're running 10.6.4. Download and reinstall the 10.6.4 Combo updater. It's surprising how many problems go away when applying the combos.

    I can solve the issue?
    Many Thanks

No harm here. Apple does not frequent this site, but only maintains it for user to user communication, so even a left handed comment directed at Apple gets misconstrued as directed at users. I too would like to see things like simple rotation imbedded within the Photo app, but will not hold my breath waiting for it.
There are certainly more things right with iPad than wrong, so get busy enjoying, and check updates every now and then

  • CNN page won't display properly

I am running OSX 10.8.5 and Safari version 6.1. Suddenly the CNN page displays in a way that chops off part of the page.( See screen grab). I haven't noticed this on any other website. If I want CNN I have to use a different browser. The only thing I've done recently is reset Safari. I tried doing that again and the problem persists. Any ideas of what is happening? Thanks for any input.
    i.

Try troubleshooting Safari extensions and third party plugins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

  • Layered image with blending mode won't display properly in Indesign CS3

    Hello,
I'm having trouble placing a layered psd and/or tiff with blending modes into my indesign cs3 document. Basically I have a flattened image with a shadow on a white background. I've had to doctor the image a bit in photoshop and I've used the multiply blending mode to remove the white background. (I'm trying to get around having to clip the image and having to recreate the shadow). Anyone know how I can drop my layered image into indesign and have it keep the blending modes I've applied in photoshop?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'll try and do my best to describe what it is I'm doing.
I've started out with a “flat” image of a product on a white background with a shadow on it. I need to make the background transparent and so that all I’m left with is the product with the shadow on a transparent background.I want to be able to place this image over another image in indesign and have the background remain transparent.
On the first layer I have a clipped out version of the product with no background (All by itself with no background or shadow). On the second layer I have the original “flat” image with the shadow and white background. On this layer I’ve used the multiply blending mode to remove the white background.
Now that I have the product on one layer by itself and the product and shadow on layer two with the multiply blending mode I have an image of the product with a shadow with no background. When I place this into indesign, my image shows up with the white background as if the multiply blending mode isn’t applied.
I’ve tried this on other images. It doesn’t appear that it lets you bring an image over with that blending mode. It's like I'd have to bring over a clipped image and then place that on top of my original image with a blending mode placed on it "in" Indesign.
    Hope that make sense?

  • Firefox and Thunderbird open but won't display properly after update

I know that I'm supposed to check all the updates carefully, and do it frequently, but the other day I realized that I'd forgotten and there were about 150 new packages and I let them install without looking much. Not that I can find anything about anyone else having this problem.
    What happens:
Both programs open without any errors. The title bars look normal, and the rough shape of the toolbars is there, but instead of recognizable words or shapes, there are black and white and sometimes grey, blue, or orange dots and bars. I'll try to get a screenshot soon.
    Information about my computer:
ThinkPad T42, about six years old, can provide more info if needed
    window manager is Openbox
    Things which I have tried:
    updating system again
    restarting
removing firefox and installing it again
looking on archlinux.org for a package which is required by both firefox and thunderbird and was recently updated, finding glib2, downgrading it (didn't work and pacman said it broke some other updated things so I put it back)
edit in case anyone finds this in search
An update fixed it. I don't know how or why.

Archive & Install should preserve all your user data... APPs, Music, Documents, etc.
The only/best way to retrieve data from a dead from a bad HD, other than DiskWarrior being able to likely fix things nothing else can, is one of these...

  • Google Chrome won't open properly in Lion

I have just  upgraded to Lion and I am having a number of difficulties, my BTYahooo home page won't display properly in Google Chrome browser, even though it will in Safari.  I also used to be able to get Dock Art working with itunes but it has now stopped working, apparently I have to down grade to 32 bit, however I do that?  can this be right, I have to downgrade the whole of itunes to get it to use this feature?

Not sure what you are seeing, but Yahoo Home page looks like this here in Chrome:
Pretty darn interesting, that shark encounter.
On any addons to iTunes or other Apple apps, you will have to wait until the 3rd party supplier updates the app to work correctly. Should not be too long, as most developers want to eat at the end of the month.

  • IGoogle doesn't display properly

    Hello all,
Yesterday, all was fine. Today, my iGoogle page won't display properly (running Safari - OSX 10.3.9 Panther). Get a notice that: 'Home tab has been sent. Sending failed.' Brother Mac running Panther has same problem. Page displays properly running Firefox, and also running Safari - OSX 10.4.11 Tiger.
Has anyone else this problem? Is this just another sign that Panther is getting old? (Google Mapping quit working about a month ago.)
Sniff..... The obits are already working overtime this month ..... Jon

    Hello Surfcat and all,
Thanx for all the updates. Whenever the Mac goes on the fritz, the first thing I try to do is find out if it's happening to everybody or just to me. It would seem that I'm not alone, so I guess I feel better.
It's nice to know your iGoogle started working again, even if it subsequently quit. Mine has remained "hors de combat", without so much as a brief reprieve.
FWIW, one of my 'extra' Macs (they get lonesome, you know) - running Safari 3.1.1 in OSX 10.4.11 - displays properly (mostly), with just one or two small anomalies.
iGoogle and Firefox continue to work properly on both.
It's easy to get frustrated and angry, and ask, "Don't they care?". I would guess they do care, but gremlins have a habit of being easier to discover than to oust, and I'm just hoping somebody will gain some insight into what the problem is and let the rest of us know about it.
This has not been my week: first, iGoogle; then the spam filter on my eMail (Eudora)(does anybody else still use that?) quits working and I am getting litterally hundreds of ads for Viagra; and then the battery on my FIOS decides to expire and starts beeping - finally find the service number for that, get somebody on the phone, find out the battery can only be ordered by phone, only from the one company, only with a credit card, finally get two batteries in one box for twice the quoted price, spend hours on the phone trying to get that straightened out, get a sweet voice (Columbian) from somewhere in Georgia who tells me everything is all right, the credit will be issued immediately as well as the address label to return the extra battery.... needless to say, nothing has happened.
I swear I'm going back to writing letters, and remembering when A T & T telephone service was quick, courteous, efficient, and the envy of the civilised world.
    Bah! Humbug! ..... Jon
