Noise & vibration

Hi
We are collecting the data of a machine which produces noise & vibration. During each trial run we are getting different values can any one help to solve this problem.
Thanks

We are testing the Quality of the gears based on the noise and vibration
produced when the bevel and the pinion gears mesh each other.
We Using SV DAQ NI PCI-447 and connected accelerometer and microphone
for 1st and 4th channel respectively.
We are following signal harmonics method for the testing purpose. First, we
acquire the data signals of both noise and vibration and process them by the
same above method and judge wheatear the gear has some defects or not. (Based
on the threshold values)
The problem is, each time when we run the machine, the noise and vibration
signals which we acquire will be different due to this final results (Harmonic
values) are also changing. We need some filters or any other solution so that we
acquire noise and vibration only for gear mesh.
I uploaded a picture showing how we doing the test process for sound.

  • Noise, Vibration & Order Analysis

    Dear all,
I am currently looking for a program that can perform a noise, vibration and order analysis. I was just made aware that LabVIEW (Developer Suite, if I'm not mistaken) comes with Noise and Vibration and Order toolkits. I've read through the data sheets for both toolkits. Now, I'm wondering whether the two mentioned toolkits can perform the analysis below:
    1. Vold-Kalman Order Tracking Filter
    2. Modal and Structural Analysis
    3. Noise Source Identification
    4. Modal Test Consultant
    5. Acoustic Test Consultant
    6. Real time CPB Analysis
    7. Rigid Balancing and Two-Plane Balancing Consultant
    8. Baseband FFT Analysis
    9. Signal Enhancement
    10. Auxiliary Parameter Logging
    11. Cepstrum Analysis, and
    12. Envelope Analysis
These analysis modules can be performed by Bruel & Kjaer product. I'm trying to influence my superior that National Instrument can also achieve the same objectives. So, maybe the users out there, or NI technical experts can help me with this. If the two toolkits are insufficient to perform such tasks, but NI has other toolkits that can supplement, can you guys please mention it in your reply.
    Many thanks!

The order analysis tools and the sound and vibration tools provide the fundamental signal analysis for most all machinery vibration functions.   However, the application level such as hammer blow test (modal), balancing, and so forth are not complete solutions.
I recommend looking at the following solution, which is based on these tools and comes with a turn-key application solution....

If you are only concerned about peaks within a certain frequency range, you should adjust the Search Range in the settings of the Peak Search Express VI (on the Configuration tab).  That will tell the express VI to only return the peaks in the frequency range that you choose.
To clean up your results, you may want to try some FFT averaging.  This might help if your peaks are jumping around a little bit due to a low peak threshold that might be picking up some noise.
If you really would like to do some filtering, you could use a highpass filter to get rid of any low order (1x/2x/3x, etc) vibration that you might not care about.  From your picture, it looks like you have the Sound & Vibration Measurment Suite and you are comfortable using express VIs.  So, you could use the filter express VI from the palette here:  Sound and Vibration>>S&V Express Measurements>>Processing>>Filter.

  • Weird noises, vibration and battery?

Okay, so I've just recently noticed that when I tilt my Macbook Air OS X, version 10.9.4, (schoolcomputer) doesn't quite work as usually.
First off, my usbports doesn't work - none of them. This happened like a week ago, and i've never used all of them, just one.
And then tonight when I tilted my mac to the sides there was weird noises sounding, like when you shake your keys.
After that my whole mac started vibrating, and it still hasn't stopped.
And my battery was at 4%, but then suddenly changed to 8%
oh yeah and also, it gave me an electric shock earlier yesterday, but it was only one and nothing happened afterwards, so I just shook it off.
Is it broken or what's happening?

You should make an appointment with an Apple Genius, bringing both the computer and power adapter with you, and discuss your options.

  • HD vibration difference 5400 vs. 7200

I'll be purchasing my first laptop next week. My purchase strategy is hung up on the size and speed of hard drives offered in the 17" MacBook Pro line. My intention for the computer will be for internet work mostly, administering a couple of web sites. It will include light Photoshop work, Dreamweaver, some Illustrator, and financial stuff. To me that's not heavy work compared to gigabyte sized PS files on my Mac Pro or 3D rendering etc.
I'm torn between a larger hard drive, the standard 5400/250GB, vs a faster hard drive, the 7200/200GB. I wondered if anyone has experience with the faster. Is there an increase in vibration? Is there likely to be a longer HD life span going with the slower 250?
Thanks for any thoughts on this issue.

i'll just throw in my 2 cents. it's not empirical, just what i've read throughout the web. most people from what i read see very little noise/vibration and resonance issues. they also see very little heat issues as well. there have even been studies that show heat really has little effect on HD life up to fairly high threshold.
i just bought a 7200 rpm in my 15" MBP and can't wait. though many will disagree. i believe the advantage of the 7200 rpm drive will be noticeable esp coupled with the increase in L2 cache and 4gb ram... it's all about reducing latency! go for it, you won't be disappointed... plus its warrantied for a year or 3 with applecare. no worries.

  • IPhone 4 - Charging issues including "This accessory may not be supported."

So for the past couple of weeks, on and off, my iPhone 4 (2 years old) has been having intermittent charging issues. I have gone through four charging cords, all from Apple, and two charging blocks, both from Apple - none of these change/resolve the issue.
I had an online chat through Apple with someone a week ago, and she suggested resetting my settings only (resetting the entire phone was my husband's idea) - resetting the phone entirely did not resolve the issue, and resetting the settings (and only the settings) works for maybe 1-2 days maximum. Any of the following things happen when plugging in the phone to charge:
    1) The phone charges normally (very rare anymore, happens more often if I reset the settings on the phone first then put everything back the way I want it)
    2) The phone charges for maybe two seconds, then a message pops up that says "This accessory may not be supported." (8/10 times this happens, can usually get it to charge normally if I unplug and replug a bunch of times)
    3) The phone makes the noise/vibrates like it is charging, but the battery percentage will go down over time. (rare, but does happen)
An Apple store visit is not exactly...possible? I live an hour and a half away from my closest one, and the location is not easy to get to (cross a bridge, pay $13 toll, $13 to get back over to go home, and that's just the way there and back...forget finding the place). I have cleaned out the phone at the charging port more times than I can count. My husband seems to think it is a battery issue...thoughts?

iOS 7 will give errors on non Apple certified peripherals.  So make sure you only use Apple certified products. Did you backup the phone and then RESTORE AS NEW (not reset)? Try doing that by plugging the phone to iTunes on a computer. See if that helps. If it solves the problem, there could have been corrupted software on you phone. If not, it could be a hardware issue (including the battery), in which case you would need to go to a Apple Store or authorized service provider.

  • MBP Late 2008 Hard Drive Questions

    Hi,
I have used PC most of my life and have used Mac OS when related to graphics and video, i find both to have their own benefits. I finally bought my first mac, it got delivered yesterday, the macbook pro late 2008, i got it on a good sale which however limited me to get the 320GB 5400rpm model, and i actually was aiming to get 320GB 7200rpm model. Now that i have this laptop, i wanted to install a new 320GB 7200 rpm hard drive since this laptop model allows you to do that yourself without voiding the warranty. In order to do so, i got this and plan to use my current 5400 rpm drive as a USB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/DIY0A57547F8/
first of all, as someone new to mac, and even though i have been super impressed by the quality of this product, my first disappointment is the fact that apple offers you to easily replace the hard disk in the mbp but does not sell the hard disk at the apple store or on phone, or allow you to bring the laptop in for HD replacement, and expects you to fill this nice beautiful laptop with third party products, (i wanted a hard disk with the an apple sticker on it just like my current one has - i know its a Hitachi... but apple has the thick black apple sticker on it!! ), i was on phone with apple for 30 mins and they eventually couldn't sell it to me after being confused about it, all they could offer me was a replacement laptop with a 10% restocking fee charge (approx $250). i contacted a mac authorized service center and they quoted me "$332" for that hard disk from apple (Hitachi 7k320), its at $95 (and a -$20 rebate) at buy.com - without the apple sticker, same model.
now that disappointment aside, i am still optimistic with my choice and have the following questions, please correct me if any of my understanding anywhere in this post is incorrect:
    1. when i install my new hard disk, what type of disk formatting should i use? - i want to be able to boot from windows xp x64 professional, i will be using it almost as much as i will use mac osx (for graphics n video), since i want to be able to run some particular PC applications on full speed that i constantly use and also play some PC games (i know many people here may argue that i dont need windows at all, however i assure you i have some good necessity for it ). Will the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting allow me to boot from xp later? any tips related to this area?
    2. There are 2 ways to install my new hard disk.
    Route 1: http://eshop.macsales.com/techcenter/techtips/sparedrive.cfm
Route 2 (considering since my mbp is new and fresh out of the box 1 day ago): http://eshop.macsales.com/techcenter/index.cfm?page=/manuals/mac/clondata.html
    which one would you recommend?
    3. Once i have the hitachi 7k320 installed, and the 5400rpm that came with the product removed, should i expect any different or limited service/warranty from apple care? if anything ever goes wrong in the mbp (except the hard disk), i can send it to apple with the replaced hard disk in it and it will all be acceptable and OK, right?
    4. Has anyone here installed a Hitachi 7k320 drive in a MBP Late 2008? if yes, were there any sort of noise/vibration issues after installation?
    5. What brand would you prefer for an internal drive for the MBP Late 2008? it originally comes with a Hitachi.

    1. Prep the new drive as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one (1.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete your OS X installation. You can restore other pre-bundled software using the Install Pre-bundled Software installer that is on the OS X Installer Disc One.
In order to install Windows you will need to use Boot Camp Assistant in the Utilities folder to create the Windows partition on your hard drive and assist with the installation. You can install the 32-bit version of XP w/SP2 or SP3 or Vista 32-bit or 64-bit. Windows drivers are included on your OS X Installer Disc One and should be installed after you boot into Windows.
If you must use the 64-bit version of XP you cannot use Boot Camp, but you could use VM software such as Parallels or VM Fusion. See the following:
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak 2 or Vista. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not yet fully developed for the Mac - some features are not yet implemented - but it does work otherwise.
    6. Last is Q. Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs. It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.
See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion.
Boot Camp is only available with Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard to get it.
As for warranty if you read yours you will find the caveat that if you perform a DIY replacement your warranty is not affected unless you cause consequential damage in which case the warranty will not cover that damage.
I have installed several Hitachi drives in my laptops, but not the current model. I've no complaints.

  • Cannot boot from 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Black

I just installed a new 750GB 7200rpm Western Digital Scorpio Black in my early 2008 15" MacBook Pro (last pre-unibody). I can boot the computer from the Scorpio Black when it's in an external enclosure, I can boot another computer, a MacBook, from the Scorpio Black via firewire while that's installed in my MacBook Pro, but what I cannot do is get the MacBook Pro to boot off the Scorpio Black as the internal drive. It will recognize it and show the main and recovery partititions, but it won't boot the OS (10.7.1.).
Here's a rundown of the installation and troubleshooting steps I've taken:
1.) Installed the drive in an external USB enclosure, formatted GUID partition table (GPT), file system HFS+ extended journaled.
1.b) Downloaded and installed Lion (10.7.1) from the App Store, used migration assistant to transfer accounts from my (now former) internal drive, and then booted from the Scorpio Black in the external enclosure to ensure everything worked fine.
2.) Installed the drive via iFixit instructions. Everything fit properly and I double checked the SATA connector was seated correctly.
3.) Booted computer for the first time with the Scorpio Black. It stuck at a spinning wheel on a grey screen.
4.) Held down option key at startup -- the computer showed the main partition and the recovery partition on the Scorpio Black as the startup drive options.
5.) Tried the recovery partition -- spinning wheel on a grey screen.
6.) Tried safe verbose boot (command - shift - v) -- it interleaves "still waiting for root device" with "SATA WARNING: Enable Drive PHY PM failed" and "SATA WARNING: auto-activate failed".
7.) Reset PRAM & NVRAM -- no joy.
8.) Connected the MacBook Pro via firewire to a Core 2 Duo white MacBook also running 10.7.1. The MacBook recognized the drive and in Disk Utility, I could see all the partitions on it.
9.) Ran repair volume (for the drive) and repair partition (for my main partition) from disk utility on the MacBook -- it said everything's fine with both.
10.) In system preferences, set the Scorpio Black as the startup drive for the MacBook.
11.) Astonishingly, the MacBook booted up just fine off the Scorpio Black in the MacBook Pro. I logged in, opened a few photos and played a video. Everything worked just peachy.
12.) Booted the MacBook Pro off my old internal hard drive, now in an external enclosure.
13.) Disk utility sees the internal Scorpio Black, and reports everything is fine with the volume and the partition.
14.) System profiler says everything is fine when I check under SATA. SMART status is verified.
Which brings me to step 15: admit defeat and ask for help. Any suggestions? The exact model number of the drive is WD7500BKPT. I purchased it from Other World Computing.
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers.

I actually first replaced the stock hard drive with a Western Digital 500 GB Scorpio Blue (i.e., a 5400 rpm drive). Here's what I can tell you about all three.
First, I didn't notice any difference in noise, vibration or power consumption between any of the drives. The computer felt stock with both of the Western Digital drives.
In terms of speed, my understanding is, all other things being equal, a larger drive is always faster than a lower capacity drive (I believe that's because more of the data is on the faster rotating outer areas). That being said, the step up to the 750GB 7200 rpm Scorpio Black was a bigger one than to the 500 GB 5400 rpm Scorpio Blue -- it gave a noticeable bump in performance. Opening my Aperture library and browsing photos went from sluggish and borderline unusuable to acceptable, or even good.
Bottom line, it's not a solid state drive, so don't expect MacBook Air levels of responsiveness, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the Scorpio Black.

  • Using TC as wireless Hard Drive?

The 120GB HD on my MacBook Pro is pretty much full to the brim now and I was considering a new internal hard drive but first I tried an external Maxtor hard drive plugged into my wifi router to store itunes and iphoto content, which was a failure to say the least.
My MBP crawled along struggling to read the data at any decent speed, despite the extra space on it's hard drive.
The final alternative to replacing my nice, quiet hard drive with a noise vibrating lump is to use a Time Capsule to store my content, but before I take the plunge I want to be sure that i'm not going to have the same issue as I did when I plugged the Maxtor drive into my router.
So in short, can I use iTunes / iPhoto / iMovie etc if all the content is stored on a Time Capsule?
    Thanks in advance
    Richard

It is highly likely you will have the same issues.
A USB connected hdd to a router has huge limitations, but even bigger limitation is wireless. Were you connecting via wired ie ethernet or wireless??
If you connect via wireless to the TC expect exactly the same issue.. the rate determining step is not the hdd speed but your slow (relative to hdd or ethernet) wireless is the problem. I am assuming your current router is N wireless.. if it isn't and you are only using G then TC can be 4x or 5x faster using 5ghz if you are close by.
Really if you cannot store your info on a 120GB drive even after off loading what you don't currently need, go and get a 500GB drive installed. They are cheap now. Although getting the drive into the MBP can be a pain depending on the model. If you want fast access to a network drive use ethernet. And a TC is slow cf a proper NAS. So if you do want to store files and access them make sure you use gigabit connection and switch and NAS.
Also realise that you have no backup, unless you also use another drive plugged in somewhere.. via usb direct or something.. never allow you library of photos, movies, music to exist on only one drive.. one day it will stop working. And you will lose everything. The cost of recovery is huge. At least with a proper NAS you can have a mirrored drive.. there is no mirror in the TC. And you can plug in a usb, or better esata drive and make a backup directly from the NAS. Store at least 3 places.. one offsite if you really care.

  • Daq and sensors question

Hi, I am working on a semester long project:
build a data acquisition system, with the following sensors:
    RPM
    Torque
    Strain of material
    Temperature
    Noise
    Vibration
I am starting from scratch. I have experience in digital design, some embedded system stuff, and the usual - C/C++.
I don't have much experience in DAQs and have no idea whats out there
and how to start on it. I have a limited budget of lets say 250$. The
system needs to be portable as well, as it will be put on a moving
object. I do have access to Labview through school.
What I am looking for is some pointers and help on getting started,
info about sensors, about DAQs, and all that. So any info is much
appreciated. I'm not even sure if I'm posting in the right forum.
    thank you
    -Mike T,

Can you tell us what the unit under test is?  The RPM sensor may be a once per revolution pulse.
PCB, www.pcb.com, has some nice vibration sensors
Thermocouples are inexpensive, and strain sensors may be a bit more expensive.
For portable, you may be interested in USB DAQ devices.  We have several that will work with LabVIEW
Which University are you at?  There are some advance signal processing libraries that might be available to you for analyzing and displaying the data.
Is there a traditional instrument that has been used in the past?

  • DVD-R drive compatabillity list?

I want to add a DVD-R drive to my G4. The only ones I see people talking about here are the Pioneers. I would like one with Lightscribe, which the Pioneers do not have. Can I use any IDE/ATA DVD-R? I'm assuming that some DVD-Rs won;t work with the iMovie, etc. Is there a Compatabillity list? I'm looking, but haven't found anything.

I am currently looking at a Pioneer EXTERNAL USB 2.0+PIONEER DVR111D 16X DVD±RW DUAL Layer and having a hard time trying to see if this will work on my Mac , any ideas?
    Overviews:
Pioneer launches its new 11th Generation dual format DVD writer the DVR-111D. This new model supports 8x Dual/Double Layer and 16x write speeds on both DVD-R/+R media. This extends Pioneer's track record of establishing key performance benchmarks when introducing new DVD writers. With the facility to write 4.7GB of data to write-once media or store up to 8.5GB on Double Layer media. The successor of the popular DVR-110 series, the DVR-111 / DVR-111D DVD burners from Pioneer are expected to be released in Europe soon after mid-March. The device writes a full DVD disc in less than six minutes.
In short, there are two main differences between the DVR-111/111D and its former version the DVR-110/110D. In the first place, the upper chassis has been redesigned in order to further reduce noise vibration from the drive.
The DVR-111D adopts 5X reading for DVD-RAM, whereas the DVR-110D would only read DVD-RAM at 2X speed.
Finally, the DVR-111 still remains at a 5X speed for read / write with DVD-RAM which is the same as the DVR-110.
Pioneer also plans to launch a retail version of the DVR-111 series, dubbed the DVR-A11XL (XLA = beige, XLB = black, XLC = silver). It is likely that Pioneer USA, China, Australia and Japan will be introducing the DVR-A11XL (retail version) possibly at the same time, although Pioneer Europe had decided to stop its retail drive business since the DVR-A08XL. Both the DVR-111 and DVR-111D drives will be OEM/bulk versions, which means that they will come as bare drives only with no retail box and software

  • Is my hard drive dying ?

My hard drive began to make more and more louder buzzing noise/vibration two weeks ago. I don't know why. Now, it makes a lot of strange buzzing/high pitch noises each time i wake it up. However, it still continues to operate normally.
I'm not in my home country for 3 months and my 1 year warranty expired in two months... And applecare is too expensive (320€) ! Is there a possibility to contact apple services by mail ?
I backup my data each day, but i need my laptop to work here in Finland... Why me ?!?

Random hard drive failures happen. Certainly there are extremely high-reliability hard drives out there for "mission critical" applications, but few consumers care for the high cost, lower capacity, and relatively lower performance. It had little to do with Apple, as they simply use ordinary 2.5" notebook drives.
Have you checked the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive in Disk Utility? Have you checked the manufacturer of the drive? Some manufacturers have warranties longer than 1 year and might pay for a replacement, although probably not the installation labor and data copying costs.

  • DVD Drawer Buzzes Very Loudly When Disk is Being Played...

New T Sat L755-S5170...when a DVD or CD or program disk is inserted into drive drawer, and 'played', the drive drawer buzzes and vibrates very loudly. There is noticeable vibration on drawer edge, when I lightly hold the drawer, which slightly reduces the vibration and noise, but noise & vibration are still present...Not pleased. Any ideas or tips, short of returning this new laptop? Thank you, motordavid

Thanks, but I am quite familiar with how DVD drawers/drives sound, over the past 30 yrs of laptops and desktops... this one was remarkably noisy: almost like any given CD or DVD or program disk was spinning eccentrically. I took it back in to where I had bought it; the 'genius tech guys' at Staples told me it was 'normal', lol! I brought it back home, and took the disk drawer out completely and reinstalled it carefully: no more loud noise, though it still plays disks more nosily than any I have ever had. The replacement option is fine, if one wants to turn in their new/not yet a year old computer, which of course is loaded with one's own personal photos, docs, etc. Not fun, even if fully backed up to a device or, the cloud. They are making these things flimsier and crummier by the day, imo, regardless of brand. GL, mD

I am getting a signal from my load cell which is great, but I was wondering how you can adjust the signal output to have minimal interference from noise, vibrations, etc. and how to program the load cell that it can be calibrated to zero (0) before any data is aquired?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Yatsco

    Hello Yatsco,
Thank you for using NI forums.  One thing you will probably want to look into is using the filtering VI's in LabVIEW.  A low-pass filter can help to eliminate any high frequency noise from your measurement.  Also, take a look at the Field Wiring and Noise Considerations article for some more information on eliminating noise.  Lastly, this community example shows how you could calculate the DC offset and compensate for it before measuring your signal.  Please let me know if you have any additional questions concerning this application.
    Regards,
