Nokia 6230i - can it work as a GPRS modem?

I've got a 'Safecom' USB Bluetooth Adaptor (aka the cheapest one on Ebuyer) and a 6230i. The phone happily pairs with my iBook, but that's about as far as it goes. When I try to send a file to the phone, it says 'unable to validate'. When I set up serial ports for the phone, it says 'could not get services'.
What I'd like to know is thus:
1. What device service and port type do I set for this phone?
2. Under sharing, what type do I set?
3. Under Network setup, do I select the port that the phone automatically set up, or do I select the port I manually set up under Sharing? I ask because only the port I manually set up under sharing is identified as being a 'Bluetooth Modem' in Network Prefs.
4. What exactly should happen when I go into Internet Connect and try to connect via bluetooth and my phone? As it stands, the phone sits and does nothing while Internet Connect tries to connect and then says 'there was a modem error'. I'm on the O2 network in the UK, if that makes any difference.
5. What script should I be using off taniwha.org.uk?
Thanks for any help you can give me, I've been fighting this thing all afternoon.

Jon,
Thanks for the advice... I'm so close to getting this to work that it's painful.
I actually phoned O2 yesterday and asked for the CID string, and was told it was this:
+cgdcont=1,`ip',`mobile.o2.co.uk'
...which seems a bit odd. In fact, it almost sounds like what you'd type in if you couldn't get the settings sent to you via SMS.
Instead, I've gone for the 99**1# route (and variations thereof) and what's happening is the first time I click 'connect', it fails to reach the communication device (even though the phone and mac connect to each other). The second time, it almost immediately says the connection has failed, please check your settings and try again.
What's going through my mind now is this:
1. This can't really be due to the USB dongle not being the ONE AND ONLY that OS X likes, can it? Why would everything else work exactly as it should via the dongle?
2. Do I need to use that ridiculous CID string anywhere? My phone connects fine to GPRS on its own, surely that setting is already in and working, and the Mac doesn't need to know it?
3. Do I need to type my APN (mobile.o2.co.uk) in anywhere? That's the only piece of information I haven't had a use for yet.
Thanks again to anyone who has info, I've been using Ross Barkman's site and also this: http://homepage.mac.com/jrc/contrib/tzones/

  • Iphone 4 user changing to Nokia N8 , can it work

    hi
Ive had an iphone 4 for a year now, an iphone 3g a year before that.
every phone i had before that was a nokia.
when the N8 came out i thought it was overpriced, but now prices are more attreactive.
My N8 arrives 3 days ago.
it looks mint, the camera is brill, using the phone is ok.
    then im struggling.
i hope APPLE ( blast them) havent made the iphone so good, so easy to use that my nokia days are over before they have begun.
major things im struggling with the N8
    1) battery life ( whats the point of having a widget facility if it just drains the battery and ruins the experience)
    2) FLASH .  I know the iphone doesnt use this, but youdont realise how many sites you cant access with nokia default or opera browser on the n8.
    3) WIDGETS, as above, whats the point of having a petrol guzzling car that does top speeds if you dont want to spend the money to run the thing.
it just seems idiotic to me, bang in loads of facilities , but it doesnt matter that they are not practical.
    4) universal support for all apps.
years ago when a computer game was released, the same title would be on, zx spec, c 64, amstrad, etc, now it seem as though the s60 is an afterthought and not priority.
    Things im living with.
    1) the camera, no need to say any more
    2) email, messaging, the phone all ok.
    3) ovi store, i find this easier than android market.
    4) 48gb of memory
    5) qwerty keyboard is nice to use
    overall im a bit worried.
i was planning to sell my iphone 4 to generate some much needed cash, but im just not sure.
im not bothered about every bell and whistle.
there  are some standards though in life that are hard to live without now
    e.g
    dyson
    subway
    costa
    tomtom
    google maps
    ebay
i really hopw apple is not on the list over nokia, it would be a shame.

    @SR_N8
There really isnt much that Android or iPhone can do that Nokia cant, but the main difference is the ease of how you do it on Android/iPhone, and the integration of all your services. Plus the number of apps you can choose from to do that thing. That alone (competition among developers) is what makes Android apps so much better than Symbian apps. Competition breeds innovation and development. Seriously, the Symbian versions of some Android/iOS apps just plain suck (see official Facebook app as example).
For example. Tweetdeck doesnt have a Symbian app. Sure I can use Socially app instead (different from Social) to do some of what Tweetdeck does, but Tweetdeck does it better, not to mention the familar interface since I also use it on my laptop. I have almost seamless transition from my primary Android phone (I still use Symbian on my other phone as I maintain two networks) to my PC and vice versa, making it easier for me.
As I said before, its not exactly Symbian that's the problem. Its the absence of interest from developers because its more difficult to create apps for Symbian than Android, and the interface was limited. Not to mention that Android and Apple marketing was way better than Nokia. Some people even think that the iPhone was the first smartphone just due to incredible marketing. Nokia will have to catch up using the WP7 ecosystem, which is probably the last bet they have.

  • Where can I find Games for my Nokia 6230i

I have a Nokia 6230i, I would like to find some additional games to download for it.
I have even worked out how to install games onto it from .jar files (this seems to be a problem to some on this board)
The only games I can find to install are freeware .jar games on sites other than Nokia, these seem riddled with adverts and delay screens ... not what I want.
Where can I download games that I can then install ... happy to pay for them ... just cant find any on the Nokia websites.
    Many Thanks for any help,
(I dont have internet connectivity with my provider so I cant download direct to my phone.)

The best place for quality games for that old model is www.gameloft.co.uk .  Not sure if they need a data connection or give you the files.
Other than that sifting through the junk that you find on google is your only option.
I would be surprised if nokia offered games for it through it's ovi store due to the age of it, again a data connection would be needed. http://store.ovi.com

  • GPRS Connection problem with Nokia 6230i

    Hi All,
I am using the GPRS activated Vodafone sim for Nokia 6230i.
I am not able to access the GPRS connection from my J2me application, it’s always shows me that "Subscribe GPRS first" but its already activated.
When i change the sim & checked with nokia N-72, my application started working fine & able to make the proper http communication.
    What could be the problem?
Do i need to do some extra settings for Nokia 6230i?
Is Nokia 6230i having some problem while accessing HttpCommunication ?
    Please suggest me.

Getting a gprs connection on series 40 phones is very difficult. You first need to create your own access point based on the gprs settings for the network you are using. You do this in settings -> Configuration -> Personal configuration settings -> add new
    I use the settings from
    http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html
When you have entered in the data, press back and select preferred access point and select the one you created.
I think then you should be able to use gprs in your application
    I test with google maps

I have iphone5 and now been given Nokia lumia 520 for work. How can I ensure that my calendars all sync in real time between each phone? Many thanks for any advice

Well if you got the Phone Pggray43 at a Local Corporate store in your Area)  you should be able to return it as long as you have all the contents.!  Phone, Charger and any other accessories that came with it the Box of Course.. As long as you have not went past the 14 Day return.. the store can go over what you used as in Air Time and Data..
Now if you've went past the 14 Day return you be Liable to pay a E.T.F =  Early Termination Fee the fee for this is around $300 so hopefully you have not went past the 14 Day return window the Manager if Available is the one I would talk to tell them your on Social Security and you just can't afford a phone as this I'm sure they'll work with you to get something solved..
Hope ya have Good Luck.! b33

  • Nokia 6230i and Mercedes Car. Working.. Just a cou...

    Hi I've got a Mercedes C220 '55' reg.
    Nokia 6230i and Nokia B6 787 5846
The phone works well in the car, but I have a couple of questions:
How do I program speed dials for use in the car ? If I press and hold '2' in the car, I get a error similar to 'no entry'..
If I have a contact on the phone who has multiple numbers assigned to them, the car only seems to show there name if they ring from their main number.. Anyway around this ?
Also is there any way to dial on of the entries other numbers, not just the main number ? Thanks

anyone have any ideas on this ??

  • Nokia 6230i Ford Car kit cradle

I have a Ford factory fitted car kit that is part of my dvd touch screen sat nav system. I have a Nokia 6230i and it was recently stolen from my car along with the cradle. I bought a new 6230i and a new cradle from Ford but when I install it in the cradle it says enhancement not supported. The Ford dealer that supplied the cradle have tried several different cradles and have now told me that the one I have is for a 6230 and that Ford do not make one for the 6230i. But my original one worked so they must do! Does anyone have one that works? And if so can they tell me the part number?

Sorry Dannyboy, but that won't work.
You have the correct cradle for the 6230i and it will work even with the newest software released some days ago.(v3.89)
"Enhancement not supported" is an indication for a problem with the ACI-Chip in the car's phone module (Accessory Control Interface-Chip).
So there is a problem in the Nokia handsfree module.
Unfortunately, there is no other possibility than going to your local Ford dealer and letting the "BT/VC" module replace.
This error is known at all Ford hotlines and it should be no problem for your dealer to clarify this.
    Best Regards

  • Pictures from Nokia 6230i

I have only owned this phone for a few days but am delighted with it apart from the fact that I cannot download any photos. I had no trouble with a previous Nokia but with this one I either get an Error message or a refer to Microsoft message.
Can anyone help please? I think I have follwed the istructions correctly, but must have done something wrong somewhere.

No joy I'm afraid. All I can think of is give you a description of what I do and what happens.
    1. Connect phone. "Use as storqge device?" "no" (as in the manual). "Data enhancement connected " appears.
2 Just over task bar "Nokia 6230i connected by USB"
    3. Go to Settings/Connectivity/"use USB"
    4. Click on File manager. Error message "The operation could not be completed". Click OK and screen shows desktop folders with two Nokia browser icons, one for new contacts and the other asking for a Microsoft report.
    6. Try Store Images. Correct phone shown as is connection by DKU-2. Screen shows "Getting info about images and videos" - and there it stops for as long as I care to leave it.
So there we are. I have a new phone, the latest Nokia software and the correct cable, but it doesn't work.
The only thought that comes to my mind is that the software download may have been corrupted by one of my anti-malware programmes - ZoneAlarm, AVG, PestPatrol and Ewido are the main ones. Would switching any or all off and then reinstalling be of any help?
I am grateful for your patience and hope for a solution soon!

  • PC Suite fails to sync my Nokia 6230i with Outlook

    Hi,
Does anyone have suggestions as to how I can make my Nokia 6230i sync with Outlook?
I am using PC Suite which connects to my phone perfectly (using bluetooth). All functionality seems to work, except for the Sync function! The 'error' is that it reports 'synchronisation completed' but 0 entries have been updated.
I have followed most of the solution directions on the web, but have not succeeded in making it work.
    My config:
    PC Suite 7.1.51.0
    PC Connectivity Solution:  Version 10.24.0.0
Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver: Version 7.1.29.0
    Operating system:
Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit Edition, Service Pack 1
    Language: English
    Language for non-Unicode programs: English
    Detected Internet browsers:
    - Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0
    Detected Bluetooth stacks:
    - Microsoft (Version: 6.0.6000, Build: 16386)
Thanks very much for any suggestions!

    Hi Marina,
    Connect the phone via USB
    Open Nokia Suite
Click the blue and white lifebuoy icon furthest to the right
Click Installed Programs and wait for the list to load
Click the Start page icon furthest to the left
    Click Synchronize all
    * Sync is slower than usual and fails with errors 80100023 and 80043c93
    Workaround:
    Close Nokia Suite
Disconnect the phone from the computer
    Connect the phone via USB
    Open Nokia Suite
    Click Synchronize all
    Now works as usual
    Windows 7 64-bit / Nokia N8-00 Belle Danish / Nokia Suite 3.3.89
The small Qt stability update for Belle is installed on the N8.
    Best regards,
    Hans

  • Nokia 6230i Bluetooth problem connecting HELP!!!

Hi, I have spent the best part of the day trying to establish whether my new nokia 6230i mobile phone that I received for xmas is faulty or is it something I am doing wrong. I just cannot seem to connect to my computer via the Bluetooth or infrared. I have been reading other peoples problems with the same thing on various websites and I thought rather than try and struggle anymore somebody here may be able to help!!! I downloaded to PC suite that came with the phone, and even downloaded a higher version (apparantly a newer one). But my phone just wont connect. I then managed to download - 1.6.1 from http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=607&kind=8
which seems to be working fine but as soon as i tried to connect it just will not find my connection on my phone. Do i need to buy any other accessories before I can connect?? I might also add that we also tried on my partners laptop and nothing is happening at all.Am i doing something wrong. somebody please tell me if I need to buy extra USB ports before using this feature. Although being Bluetooth I thought this was wireless?? Also any recommendations on how to use the infrared would be great to. Sorry to drag this on - i am not new to phones as i have had many but this has got me stumped. Thanks in advance for any help. Dawnie33

If your Bluetooth solution is Bluesoleil, I would firstly update your Nokia PC Suite to latest version, 6.70.22 from www.nokia.com/pcsuite ( I don't recall by heart what was the level of BlueSoleil support in PC Suite 6.5, but it can be that your problem is partly related to BlueSoleil not being officially supported with that old version of PC Suite (6.5).
Then the next thing is to look around for intructions how you make sure that if you have Windows Xp SP 2 (which has microsoft own Bluetooth sw solution that easily "fights" with any other Bluetooth sw), how you make the Bluesoleil work in your PC flawlessly.
Google is good help for that, search for links like: "BlueSoleil sw problem in XP SP2" or similar and look for instruction how you make sure you only have BlueSoleil sw in active use.

  • Nokia Observation Camera not able to remember GPRS...

    Hello!
I have an old nokia observation camera (Type: PT-2, model: Nokia Observation Camera) that works fine except it cannot remember changes made to one setting, namely the GPRS contact name. I am guessing that the flash memory of the device has gone bad but have no way of verifying this.
Is there anything I can do about this? Can I change the 8MB flash and then reinstall or won't I be able to use the device with a empty memory?
Is it possible to change the default setting in the firmware?
This product has been out of production for at least 10 years, would it be possible to get sources and other resources for this device?
    Thanks!

Unfortunately all support material appertaining to PT-2 has long since been archived with loss of software updater and such like.
Happy to have helped forum in a small way with a Support Ratio = 37.0
