Non embedded characters also show up in textarea

Hi - In our custom made fonts, we dont have characters like ®, present. (confirmed it by seeing the font in windows character map). But our text area allows copy pasting such characters into the textarea. We use TLF. Am not sure what font these characters get rendered in, but am pretty confident these are not present in my font.
This is how I generate my font swf.Pls guide me on what wrong am I doing or why are these fonts showing up in TLF? Let me know if you need more details.

Hi - We need to create printed jpeg for the text personalization with indesign and indesign does not render them back as the original font does not have these characters embedded.
Curious to know. it used to work this way correctly with Flash 8/ AS2/ FP8 (i.e allow only embedded characters to be used and does not show non embedded characters) . So how has this changed now with Flex?

My report output has some non english characters. Downloading the output in CSV the non english characters dont show as is, rather appear as *???*
I am using classic Report Template.
How to overcome this?
Should I create a custom Report Template?
If Yes, then how to incorporate the custom template
Thanks,

Hi,
You can create a custom template using BI Publisher + RTF Template.
There you can set the font, graphs, ...
But you need commercial version of Oracle BI.

• Not all chinese characters display correctly with non-embedded text

Hi all,
I've updated to the last beta 2 of Flash Player 10.1 (10,1,51,66) and compiled this simple Flex application to illustrate the fact that not all chinese characters can be displayed correctly with non-embedded text (device font).
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo"
minWidth="1024" minHeight="768"
creationComplete="resourceManager.localeChain = ['zh_CN'];"
layout="{new VerticalLayout()}">
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import spark.layouts.VerticalLayout;
]]>
</fx:Script>
<s:Label text="伜-伞伟传伡伢伣伤伥伦伧伨伩伪伫伬伭-伝">
</s:Label>
<mx:Label text="伜-伞伟传伡伢伣伤伥伦伧伨伩伪伫伬伭-伝"/>
</s:Application>
Notice that characters from the Unicode range 0x4F1E .. 0x4А2D are not displayed within <s:Label> component that uses Flash Text Engine (FTE) by default to display the text, but at the same time those characters display just fine within older <mx:Label> component that relies on flash.text.TextField instance to render the text.

OK, did not know that "Arial Unicode MS" font is only distributed with Microsoft Office, was looking into relying on this font in case if "simsun.ttc" font is not available at the user's system, by using the following:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
minWidth="1024" minHeight="768"
creationComplete="resourceManager.localeChain = ['zh_CN']"
layout="{new VerticalLayout()}">
<fx:Style>
@namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
@namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo";
s|Label {
fontFamily: "Arial Unicode MS, SimSun, Arial";
</fx:Style>
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import spark.layouts.VerticalLayout;
]]>
</fx:Script>
<s:Label id="sparkLabel" text="伜-伞伟传伡伢伣伤伥伦伧伨伩伪伫伬伭-伝"/>
</s:Application>
Tough decision ahead, but accordingly to the survey at codestyle.org (2000 participants from 2007 year and onwards), Arial Unicode MS is present at 62.53%% system surveyed.
ps
My current install of Windows XP already includes the install of Microsoft Office 2007 and I've also enabled/disabled the support of East Asian languages, thus the content of my "fonts" folder differs now significantly from "clean" Windows XP install version.
Nevertheless I found the page with comprehensive lists of standard fonts installed with different releases of Windows that looks viable here: http://www.kayskreations.net/fonts/fonttb.html

I have several pdfs on my iPad in iBooks. My iPhone shows only the categories, none of the documents. How can I get my iPhone to also show the documents that are on my iPad?

You will need to connect your iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over to your computer (that will copy PDFs and epubs that are in the iBooks app, not just actual ibooks), and you can then sync them to your iPhone. Or you might be able to open each PDF in iBooks on your iPad and use the share icon to email them to yourself and then use 'open in' in the Mail app on your iPhone to copy them to its iBooks app (if the PDF is protected then you may not get the email option via the share icon).
The Settings > iBooks > Sync Collections setting doesn't copy items between devices, it just means that it a bookor PDF is on both devices and you move it into a collection on one device then it will be moved into the same collection on the other device

• Formula to show non english characters from clob in crystal report

Hi
I am using the database Oracle 11g with a field clob in one of the table that i want to show in the crystal report
But the problem is when i put the clob field in crystal report it is outputting the results perfectly for English characters but not for the Arabic ones and returning the string like (¿¿¿¿ ¿¿¿¿ ¿¿¿ ¿¿¿¿ ¿¿¿¿ ¿¿¿ ¿ ¿¿¿¿¿ ¿¿¿)
so is there any way to show the arabic (non english) characters perfectly on crystal report with clob field

Hi Azeem,
Make sure the arabic font should install in your system.
Try this:
Create a text field in your Crystal Report (a label).
Place Arabic characters into that field (just by typing them into it on the report definition).
Run the report. If they display correctly then its probably not Crystal, but rather would point to an issue in the data retrieval and supply to Crystal via your dataset (or whatever datasource you are using).
If they don't display - then its definitely Crystal.

• Non-alphanumeric characters in textarea causing 404 errors

I'm only just becoming acquainted with Coldfusion, as I've been asked to fix a problem in an existing system. The system consists of a simple html form containing a text area, among other input fields. The form is submitted to a cfm script, which displays a confirmation page and sends a couple of emails. The problem is that whenever the user enters any (as far as I can tell) non-alphanumeric characters, e.g. quotes, commas or brackets, in the textarea field, they get a 404 response from the server.
I tried a number of things to identify the problem, including escaping the text in javascript before submission, but didn't get anywhere. The last thing I tried was installing a local version of the CF on my workstation, hoping to reproduce the problem and thus debug it more easily. However, on my local CF setup the problem does not occur.
Can anyone help me debug this please? Thanks,
Marcin

Thanks for your response. The form method is "post". The only thing that the CFM handler does with this field (gametestexperience) is include it at the bottom of an email message:

• Non-english characters in file names show as question marks

It's probably iocharset=utf8 question, but it's not only cd-rom - native partitions with "defaults" options behave no better. What is the correct solution? Current locale is en_US.UTF-8, which should be OK.

native partitions with "defaults" options behave no better
What filesystems?
For ntfs read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL
Policies
NOTE: this is deprecated from hal => 0.5.10
and
mount.ntfs linking
As of hal => 0.5.10 the above policy may not work. This is a workaround forcing hal to use the ntfs-3g driver instead of the standard ntfs driver. Please note that this method will use the ntfs-3g driver for all NTFS drives on your system! As root create a symbolic link from mount.ntfs to mount.ntfs-3g.
# ln -s /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g /sbin/mount.ntfs
Possible issues using this method:
if mount is called with "-i" option it doesn't work
possible issues with the kernels ntfs module
Locale issues
If you use KDE, you may have problem with filenames containing non-latin characters. This happens because kde's mounthelper is not parsing correctly the policies and locale option. There is a workaround for this:
1) Remove the "/sbin/mount.ntfs-3g" which is a symlink. code: rm /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g
2) Replace it with a new bash script containing:
#!/bin/bash
/bin/ntfs-3g $1 $2 -o locale=en_US.UTF-8 #put your own locale here
3) Make it executable: chmod +x /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g
There is only a problem with partition labels containing spaces, so if you have such a label, replace the space with an underscore, otherwise when you try to mount it you will get an error.
4) Add NoUpgrade=sbin/sbin/mount.ntfs-3g to pacman.conf.

• I have non English characters showing up.

This morning I wanted to make a change in my Security & Privacy settings and when prompted to authenticate the dialogue box contained non-English characters. Even the OK button appeared to be in Chinese are the like.
Any ideas welcome. OS X 10.8.1

I'ts not all of the text though. It's just the authentication popup that asks you for your password when you want to unlock the padlock to make changes. It comes up with "System Preferences" then two lines of non-english characters followed by "Type your password to allow this". Then of course you have the Name and Password text fields. The Cancel button is normal and the what would normally be the OK button, is in non-english text.
Everything else system-wide is fine.

• Support issue for non-English characters (in html forms)

Hi group!
I just want to post an issue here and see if anyone else has the same problem. First off, Im running Windows XP MCE but the French version (not the english version). This may help find out where the problem really is.
Second, I know a bit of html and such, and I'm referring to HTML Character entities for this thread, there's a quite complete list here for reference: http://www.faqs.org/docs/htmltut/characterentitiesfamsupp69.html
I noticed that some, not all, non-English characters written in a textarea (which is, basically, a multi-lined input box) doesnt pass well or at all to the server when sending the form from Safari. Most of the time, the content of the text area is reduced to the beginning and ends where the first accentued character is met.
The most used French accents (é, à) are usually well interpreted (but may, once in a while, produce that bug too) by safari, but ô and î doesnt do that well.
Oddly, this bug doesnt happen all the time and doesnt "crash" in the same manner everytime.
So I started a thread just to see if there's anyone else having issues with any non-english characters mostly in forms. Probably flash/shockwave does work, but I'm not sure- I have not tested yet.
Acer Aspire 5044 Windows XP Turion 1.8GHz, 1Gb SDRam, ATI 200M xpress

Yes, it is a known issue. I also noticed that it sometimes works, but most of the time it does not. It will hopefully be solved in the future. According to http://www.apple.com/safari/download/ changes that will come include:
# Support for International users
# International text input methods
# Advanced text (contextual forms, international scripts)

• Non-Latin characters in Sylpheed's subject when in gnome/kde

So, this is curious and i'm not expecting an answer, but anyway i post it:
Sylpheed 0.9.5 [simple, not claws], works ok when opened in fluxbox or window maker; but when opened in gnome or kde, following curious behaviour shows: in the "Subject" field, when I switch over to greek keyboard layout, it doesn't show greek characters but some not identified encoding, probably iso8859-2 or so. This is mirrored everywhere where "Subject" field shows [ie in the headers on top of the message]. But then, if i type some greek characters in "Subject" field (which show weird there) and then copy-paste them in the message body (when composing a message), then they show allright as the greek characters i intended to type. In the message body everything shows as it should be, ie greek, there's no problem there or when composing a message, only the subject (and only in kde & gnome). Needless to say that this "subject" encoding behaviour also shows in message list, so most messages of mine cannot be identified via message list in sylpheed.
Every locale setting in Arch is correct, so please don't focus there. This doesn't happen in slackware 9.0 or 9.1 or in debian sid, so it's probably either a gnome/kde problem or a sylpheed problem.
I'm interested to know if there's someone else facing the same problem with sylpheed in arch [and probably with gtk+1.2 apps]. By this i don't neccessarily mean with greek but say with cyrillic or some other character set and encoding.
So, this is it. Any clues?

The funny thing is that bold font [when message unread in message list] shows OK, ie in greek, but when i click on unread message, it is assumed to have been read, so it changes over to medium [non bold] and the encoding changes as well into the one that is not greek and thus unreadable. In ~/.sylpheed/sylpheedrc the fonts are:
widget_font=
message_font=-microsoft-sylfaenarm-medium-r-normal-*-*-160-*-*-p-*-iso8859-7
normal_font=-monotype-arial-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
bold_font=-monotype-arial-bold-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
small_font=-monotype-arial-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
In /etc/gtk, for gtk1.2 apps the file refering to greek encoding [el] seems to be fine [exactly the same as in slackware 9.1].

• My Firefox cannot display non-English characters, even though I have tried every language encoding I have!

I am a big fan of Japanese songs and websites, so I was very disappointed when I saw that Firefox could not handle any non-English characters. I have tried every encoding I can, but none work and I just see boxes with numbers and letters inside. I have only just got this older laptop for my birthday - my old laptop which ran Windows Vista and had Firefox 4 had no trouble at all. Please help me!

hello muoshui, please enter '''about:config''' into the firefox location bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named '''network.http.accept-encoding''' - right-click and reset that entry to the default value.
if this does not resolve the issue already, please also go through the steps offered at [[Websites look wrong or appear differently than they should]].

We have a function module that we've written to replace non-permitted characters with a space in transfer rules. We see a lot of invisible hexidecimal characters coming in free form text fields. This work great for English. However, we have a Unicode system with other languages installed. We are also getting the hex characters in other character sets.

Hello aLaN,
how r u ?
Hey we have faced the problem with Hexadecimal characters, but not the same issue. In our case the problem was in the Source System. In the DB Tables we had some unwanted characters, that was showing some errors while data loading, particularly ERROR 18.
So we resolved it by changing the Source System data.
I have already posted for the hexadecimal issue.... the replies was
I think this is related to Invalid character issues.. or SPaces setting in RSKC..
may be you want to look at eh following post..
Re: invalid characters
/people/siegfried.szameitat/blog/2005/07/18/text-infoobjects-part-1
Example:
let us say..
1. Check in RSKC for allowed characters..
2. Add a code in the update rule to restrict the texts contains..
!"%&''()*+,-./:;<=>?_0123456789ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ' are allowed characters in RSKC transaction then other than the above character is 'Invalid' including the smaller case letters and will throw the hex.. error.
since this is from database system even 'NULL' datatype from there is not visble to the eyes and can cause the failure.
Hope this helps
