Non-static and static errors
Hi,
I've created a couple classes, say, Input and Output both with a number of different methods.
Output holds an integer value that Input needs access to.
I created a method in Output to return the value, such as
//doneItemCount is declared up here somewhere, etc
public int items()
int returnvalue = doneItemCount;
return returnvalue;
My Input class has a method from which it tries to get that value
public void blah()
int test = Output.items();
but no matter what i try i get
non-static method items() cannot be referenced from a static context
int test = Output.items();
If i make the methods static, then i get the same error for doneItemCount not being static or whatnot.
Any tips on how to overcome this?
Thanks
Hi!!
This error means that you are mixing up static and non-static methods. If you keep items() as you wrote it, then it's not a static method, and you'll have to create or use an Output variable in the blah() method. If I'm not clear:
In Output, you put:
public int items()
return doneItemCount;
And in Input, you put either:
public void blah()
int test = new Output().items();//not very useful
or, if you declared and instanciated an Output variable(say blabla) somewhere else in the Input class, you put:
public void blah()
int test = blabla.items();
Anyway, you should keep items() non-static, since it needs to access to an attribute(doneItemCount).
Hope this'll help. When I first met this error, I thought it was quite a weird solution, but you get used to it. And the compiler leaves you alone :).

How do I identify which is static and which is non static method?
I have a question which is how can i justify which is static and which is non static method in a program? I need to explain why ? I think it the version 2 which is static. I can only said that it using using a reference. But am I correct or ?? Please advise....
if I have the following :
class Square
private double side;
public Square(double side)
{ this.side = side;
public double findAreaVersion1()
{ return side * side;
public double findAreaVersion2(Square sq)
{ return sq.side * sq.side;
public void setSide(double s)
{ side = s;
public double getSide()
{ return side;
} //class Square

Static and non-static variables and methods
Hi all,
There's an excellent thread that outlines very clearly the differences between static and non-static:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=54&thread=374018
But I have to admit, that it still hasn't helped me solve my problem. There's obviously something I haven't yet grasped and if anyone could make it clear to me I would be most grateful.
Bascially, I've got a servlet that instatiates a message system (ie starts it running), or, according to the action passed to it from the form, stops the message system, queries its status (ie finds out if its actually running or not) and, from time to time, writes the message system's progress to the browser.
My skeleton code then looks like this:
public class IMS extends HttpServlet
public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException
doPost(request, response);
public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException
//get the various parameters...
if (user.equalsIgnoreCase(username) && pass.equalsIgnoreCase(password))
if(action.equalsIgnoreCase("start"))
try
IMSRequest imsRequest = new IMSRequest();
imsRequest.startIMS(response);
catch(IOException ex)
catch(ClassNotFoundException ex)
else if(action.equalsIgnoreCase("stop"))
try
StopIMS stopIMS = new StopIMS();
stopIMS.stop(response);
catch(IOException ex)
else if(action.equalsIgnoreCase("status"))
try
ViewStatus status = new ViewStatus();
status.view(response);
catch(IOException ex)
else
response.sendRedirect ("/IMS/wrongPassword.html");
public class IMSRequest
//a whole load of other variables
public PrintWriter out;
public int messageNumber;
public int n;
public boolean status = false; //surely this is a static variable?
public String messageData = ""; // and perhaps this too?
public IMSRequest()
public void startIMS(HttpServletResponse response) throws IOException, ClassNotFoundException
try
response.setContentType("text/html");
out = response.getWriter();
for(n = 1 ; ; n++ )
getMessageInstance();
File file = new File("/Users/damian/Desktop/Test/stop_IMS");
if (n == 1 && file.exists())
file.delete();
else if (file.exists())
throw new ServletException();
try
databaseConnect();
catch (ClassNotFoundException e)
//here I start to get compile problems, saying I can't access non-static methods from inside a static method
out.println(FrontPage.displayHeader());
out.println("</BODY>\n</HTML>");
out.close();
Thread.sleep(1000);
catch (Exception e)
}OK, so, specifially, my problem is this:
Do I assume that when I instantiate the object imsRequest thus;
IMSRequest imsRequest = new IMSRequest();
imsRequest.startIMS(response); I am no longer in a static method? That's what I thought. But the problem is that, in the class, IMSRequest I start to get compile problems saying that I can't access non-static variables from a static method, and so on and so on.
I know I can cheat by changing these to static variables, but there are some specific variables that just shouldn't be static. It seems that something has escaped me. Can anyone point out what it is?
Many thanks for your time and I will gladly post more code/explain my problem in more detail, if it helps you to explain it to me.
DamianCan I just ask you one more question though?Okay, but I warn you: it's 1:00 a.m., I've been doing almost nothing but Java for about 18 hours, and I don't do servlets, so don't take any of this as gospel.
If, however, from another class (FrontPage for
example), I call ((new.IMSRequest().writeHTML) or
something like that, then I'm creating a new instance
of IMSRequest (right?)That's what new does, yes.
and therefore I am never going
to see the information I need from my original
IMSRequest instance. Am I right on this?I don't know. That's up to you. What do you do with the existing IMS request when you create the new FrontPage? Is there another reference to it somewhere? I don't know enough about your design or the goal of your software to really answer.
On the other hand, IMSRequest is designed to run
continuously (prehaps for hours), so I don't really
want to just print out a continuous stream of stuff to
the browser. How can I though, every so often, call
the status of this instance of this servlet?One possibility is to pass the existing IMSRequest to the FrontPage and have it use that one, rather than creating its own. Or is that not what you're asking? Again, I don't have enough details (or maybe just not enough functioning brain cells) to see how it all fits together.
One thing that puzzles me here: It seems to me that FP uses IMSReq, but IMSReq also uses FP. Is that the case? Those two way dependencies can make things ugly in a hurry, and are often a sign of bad design. It may be perfectly valid for what you're doing, but you may want to look at it closely and see if there's a better way. -
Mixing static and dynamic content in a single outputText value causes NPEs
Hi,
I am having a problem and I'm wondering if it is a result of my error or if this is a bug.
I am mixing dynamic and static content in the value attribute of tags (e.g., outputText). On initial page load, everything works fine. However, if the same view is reloaded (e.g., after a failed validation) I get an NPE from JSF:

<h:outputText escape="false"
value='<link href="#{myBean.styleSheet}" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />' />If I replace this with a much more convoluted set of tags, it works:
<h:outputText escape="false"
value='<link href="' /><h:outputText escape="false" value="#{myBean.styleSheet}"
/><h:outputText escape="false" value='" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />' />So is the problem that I am mixing dynamic and static content with a single value? If so, why does it work on the first view, and not after?
If it matters, I'm using the reference implementation version 1.1 (as included with NetBeans 5.5RC2) on SuSE 10.0 w/ JDK 1.5_09.
Thanks,
BillYes, that's how I originally had it, but then changed it to the outputText approach since a single tag could do what I wanted, as long as I was allowed to mix static and dynamic content within a single value.
I think this is a bug in JSF 1.1, since if what I am doing is illegal, it should throw an exception on the first page view, not work on first view and throw an exception on subsequent views. I'm guessing that this has something to do with the fact that on first page view it only runs the restore view and render response JSF phases, while on subsequent requests all of the phases will be run, and it's in one of those other phases that the exception is thrown.
For now, multiple tags is the work-around, I guess.
Thanks,
Bill -
Using both Dynamic and Static NAT with two Different Internet facing Subnets
We have two Class C Public Address subnets. We started with Subnet (A) and have many of our Internet accessible devices on it. It is running on a Cisco PIX 515R. We bought a new ASA 5510 8.3(2) and started Migrating the Users and new servers to it so I started with our second Class C Subnet (B). Later on down the road I found out that if the Firewalls Default Gateway is is set to a (B) Interface subnet, then the servers that are statically mapped to a (A) Address will have a (B) address when they communicate out to the internet. So they are receiving packets on their (A) Address, though replying to them with a (B) address.
It was mentioned that I should be able to combine static and dynamic NAT mapping to allow devices behind the firewall to have a fixed external Address when communicating outbound as well as inbound.
So For instance I want the Following: when the Internal Replies I want the reply to come from the mapped IP, not a IP from the Dynamic Pool.
Public IP: 192.168.1.100/24
Internal IP: 10.0.0.100/16

When I set this up my serverB shows a Public IP of something in the 192-168-1-NAT-POOL Not 192.168.5.101
Any Suggestions?
Thanks!Not sure why I have Multiple Entries. )-: I did think it was Odd. I think it might be because I looking at examples of the new and old styles of NAT.
We have a Single ISP, though have 2 separate non-Contiguous Class C Addresses from them. We host some Servers on one subnet and some on the other.
I'm looking for a way to use both Subnets on the same ASA.
The Connection to the net looks like this:
Internet -> Edge Router Layer3 VLAN Switch
GE0/1.2 - 192.168.1.1 VLAN Tagged --> GE0 - VLAN Tagged
GE0/1.2 - 192.168.5.1 VLAN Tagged -^
Layer3 VLAN Switch Firewall
GE1 192.168.1.0/24 Untagged -> ASA Outside-1
GE2 192.168.5.0/24 Untagged -> ASA Outside-5
Firewall
ASA inside 10.0.0.0/16 -> Switch -> 10.0.0.100
Hope that helps clarify.
I could try to post some sanitized Configs of my PIX and ASA if needed. But the end result I'm trying to do is have the ASA do NAT for multiple Public Subnets. -
MS NLB with ASA and Static NAT from PUP to NLB IP
Hi all,
I am trying to get MS NLB up and running. It is almost all working. Below is my physical setup.
ASA 5510 > Cat 3750X >2x ESXi 5.1 Hosts > vSwitch > Windows 2012 NLB Guest VMs.
I have two VMs runing on two different ESXi hosts. They have two vNICs. One for managment and one for inside puplic subnet. The inside puplic subnet NICs are in the NLB cluster. The inside public subnet is NATed on the ASA to a outide public IP.
192.168.0.50 is the 1st VM
192.168.0.51 is the 2nd VM
192.168.0.52 is the cluster IP for heartbeat
192.168.0.53 is the cluster IP for NLB traffic.
0100.5e7f.0035 is the cluster MAC.
The NLB cluster is using MULTICAST
I have read the doumentation for both the ASA and CAT switch for adding a static ARP using the NLB IP and NLB MAC.
For the ASA I found
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa84/asdm64/configuration_guide/mode_fw.html#wp1226249
ASDM
Configuration > Device Management > Advanced > ARP > ARP Static Table
I was able to add my stic ARP just fine.
However, the next step was to enable ARP inspection.
Configuration > Device Management > Advanced > ARP > ARP Inspection
My ASDM does not list ARP Inspection, only has the ARP Static Table area. Not sure about this.
For the CAT Switch I found
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_example09186a0080a07203.shtml
I added the both the ARP and Static MAC. For the static MAC I used the VLAN ID of the inside public subnet and the interfaces connected to both ESXi hosts.
On the ASA I added a static NAT for my outside Public IP to my inside pupblic NLB IP and vise versa. I then added a DNS entry for our domain to point to the outside public IP. I also added it to the public servers section allowing all IP traffic testing puproses.
At any rate the MS NLB is working ok. I can ping both the Public IP and the Inside NLB IP just fine from the outside. (I can ping the inside NLB IP becuase I'm on a VPN with access to my inside subnets) The problem is when I go to access a webpade from my NLB servers using the DNS or the Public IP I get a "This Page Can't Be Displyed" messgae. Now while on the VPN if I use the same URL but insied use the NLB IP and not the Public IP it works fine.
So I think there is soemthing wrong with the NATing of the Public to NLB IP even tho I can ping it fine. Below is my ASA Config. I have bolded the parts of Interest.
Result of the command: "show run"

Any help would be great! I think the issue is in teh NAT as I am able to access NLB IP from the outside and could not do that before adding the Static ARP stuff.
Thanks,
ChrisAlso If I change to NAT from the public IP to the NLB IP to use either one of the phsyical IPs of the NLB cluster (192.168.0.50 or 51) it works fine when using the public IP. So it's definatly an issue when NATing the VIP of NLB cluster.

Can we call same VI statically and dynamically in same application ?
Hi,
I am having an application where i call a VI dynamically using VI server. However at some other place in the same application, i call the VI statically (i.e. the VI icon is placed in the block diagram of parent VI). But when i run the application i get following error message:
"Possible reason(s):
LabVIEW: The VI is not in a state compatible with this operation."
Why is it so ?. Can we not call the same VI dynamically and statically at two differenct locations in the main program ?.
Thanks for any inputs.If a VI is statically in a running hierarchy, it can be also called dynamically using "Call by Reference" node after opening it with a its type specifier refnum. However, you can't invoke the Run VI method, the same way you can't run it using the Run arrow.

[weblogic 8.1-sp4] EAR and statics placement
stupid question maybe, but i haven't found any clue.
i have an EAR with some WARs and static stuff packed at the root of the EAR like "images/foo.gif", "styles/bar.css" etc. in our JSPs inside the WARs we use JSTL core "url" tag to resolve these links like <img src="<core:url value="/images/foo.gif"/>"> or <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="<core:url value="/styles/bar.css"/>">. all the stuff was in a single WAR before, but now when i've moved the statics away to the root of our EAR all such links are apparently broken.
so the first question is how do i refer to statics placed at the EAR root from JSPs inside WARs (possibly without changing all thousands of pages that we have)?
and the second is why none of the resources are accessible from browser using "http://localhost:7001/images/foo.gif" or "http://localhost:7001/styles/bar.css", which always give 404? could it be due to security constraints?I meant exactly what I said. You have to figure out the best way to implement that. If it's most effective to merge the WARS, then do that. There are other possibilities. You could deploy the shared content on a content delivery network (a fancy term for a separate fast server farm) and have your separate WARs reference them with external URLs to the CDN.
Concerning the "why" question, I would just say "because". WebLogic is an implementation of the JEE specification. They've added extensions, but nothing that directly addresses your issue. -
Converting from non-static to static
I am tyring to convert a method from non-static to static. I changed a few variables to get it to work and everything is now static in the method except for the getClass() method which it calls, does anyone know how I could work around this.
Heres the method -
public static void addObjectToPanel(String type, String name)
JLabel label = new JLabel("The object");
// The getClass() here is causing the problem
label.setIcon(new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("object.gif")));
label.setBounds(xCoordinate, yCoordinate, width, height);
display.setLayout(null);
display.add(label);
// After the image is placed by this method, then the x coordinate is moved to allow for the next object
xCoordinate +=150;
// This resizes the JPanel as images are added, this solves a potential issue with the JScrollPane
display.setPreferredSize(new Dimension( (900+xCoordinate), (600+yCoordinate) ));Is there any way I can get around using getClass() or is there anything else I could do, thanks.It's a static method. You should know what thename
of the class that it is in is.Sorry, I didn't see that they were talking about the
actuall class that the method is in, i missed
something written earlier.
I am now using label.setIcon(new
ImageIcon("object.gif"));and everything is working fine now.
Thanks everyone for your help.Be warned that this is not the same as what you did initially. The initial version looks in the class loading path. The final version looks in the current directory. I believe your intention is better reflected by the initial version. -
My ISP requires a static IP address. When I connect my MacBook pro to ethernet and set manual properties it always sticks and works. However when I set up my airport extreme manually it always changes the ip address to one that is non functional and will not let me connect to internet. How do I get the IP address that i set to remain saved after every restart.
The whole point of a home router is to let you share one real-world IP address amongst more than one computer in the house. In order to do that, the home router must give out new IP addresses that's in the private address pool (which are not valid on the outside world), and then the router will direct outside traffic to the correct home computer on the inside.
To use a static IP address assigned to you by the ISP. You open the Airport Utility, select the AEBS on the list and click manual setup
Go to the Internet pane and setup as follows:
Connecting Using: Ethernet
IPv4: Manually
IP Addr: Given by ISP
Subnet Mask: Given by ISP
Router Addr: Given by ISP
DNS Servers: Given by ISP
Sharing: Share a public IP address -
when i make calls, all i can hear is static, and when i plug in headphones or turn the speaker on, it still doesnt work. but facetime, music, an apps sound still work. help? iphone 5
Hello Delaney1130,
It sounds like you are getting static on both the receiver and the speaker when you make a call. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help resolve the issue named:
iPhone: Troubleshooting issues making or receiving calls
https://support.apple.com/kb/TS3406
Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings > Enable Airplane Mode, wait five seconds, then turn off airplane mode.
Check your phone settings:
Check your Do Not Disturb settings: Tap Settings > Do Not Disturb.
Check for any blocked phone numbers: Tap Settings > Phone > Blocked.
See if Call Forwarding is turned on: Tap Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding.
Ensure that your software is up to date:
Check for a carrier settings update.
Check for an iOS software update.
Note: Some updates may require a Wi-Fi connection.
If the iPhone has a SIM card, reseat the SIM card.
If the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s is on the Verizon network, dial *228 from the iPhone and select option 2 to update the Preferred Roaming List (PRL). The PRL determines the cellular towers the phone uses for cellular service, selecting those with the best signal strength.
Reset the network settings: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Try to make or receive calls in another location.
Attempt to isolate to one network band:
If you're having the issue on LTE, disable LTE, if possible, and try again.
If you're having the issue on 3G/4G, disable 3G/4G, if possible, and try again.
Contact the carrier to check the following:
Your account is properly configured to use the specific iPhone that has the issue.
There are no localized service outages.
Your account doesn't have a billing-related block.
Your calls don't have errors on the carrier system.
Restore the phone as new.
If the above steps don't resolve the issue, go to an Apple Retail Store, carrier, Apple Authorized Reseller, or contact AppleCare to send the phone in for service.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
All the very best,
Sterling -
Difference between STATIC and FLOW CONTROL in IKM
Hello,
Can someone explain the difference between STATIC and FLOW control in IKM ? What is the best situation to use them with some example ?
Can we have more than one ODI Constraint at the target table.
Thanks
Edited by: cdmnagaraj on 19-Oct-2008 21:59Hi Nagaraj,
Suppose your Lookup table -> column "VALUE" is 101.
How many rows in your source table (column) have "Balance" = 101 ??
I hope only One.
From your Source table all the recors will be moved to your I$ . then from your I$ it will check for the condition
and all the violated records will be moved to your E$
please check your "Insert CK Errors" from your operator
it will be like this....
insert into E$_TargetTable
ERR_TYPE,
ERR_MESS,
CHECK_DATE,
ORIGIN,
CONS_NAME,
CONS_TYPE,
col1,
col2,
balance
select
'F',
sysdate,
'(3367100)TESTPROJECTS.TestTable',
'conditionTest',
'CK',
col1,
col2,
balance
from I$_TargetTable CHI
where not (
Balance = (Select value from LOOKUP)
So in your case it will check for balance not equal to 101 . and it will push those records into your E$ table

How to set and static ip_address for a Suse Linux box
Hi.
I've done the following to set an static ip address for my Suse 9 Linux box:
- Take not of inet address value from ifconfig command. ie: (172.17.2.14)
- Change this value in /etc/hosts for my linux box.
Since Suse is configure by default to use DHCP for assigning dinamic ip_addresses i'm not sure whether will lastly be set as a static address. I've rebooted my box and it seems to be OK.
Thanks in advance ...!/etc/hosts is not configuration file for ethernet interfaces.
Configuration files for ethernet interfaces are stored in /etc/sysconfig/network directory.
For example if you have eth0 device then configuretion for this device is stored in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file.
Important directives:
DEVICE - interface (eth0)
IPADDR - IP address of interface
NETMASK - netmask
BOOTPROTO - "static" for static configuration, dhcp for dynamic configuration via dhcp
ONBOOT - activating interface during boot (yes/no) (yes - of course :-) )
GATEWAY - default gateway
So for example you want setup static IP (192.168.10.1 / 255.255.225.0) for eth0 interface.
Edit the /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file and your configuration should be:
DEVICE=eth0
IPADDR=192.168.10.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
BOOTPROTO=static
ONBOOT=yesThen you simply restart the nework using:
/etc/init.d/network restartOR
/sbin/ifdown eth0
/sbinf/ifup eth0 OR
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 up -
Credit Management: Difference Between Static and Dynamic Credit Check
Hi,
Could anyone tell the difference Between Static and Dynamic Credit Check?
According to website: http://www.sap-basis-abap.com/sd/difference-between-static-and-dynamic-credit-check.htm ... this is the answer:
====================
Simple Credit Check : Tr.Code - FD32
It Considers the Doc.Value + Open Items.
Doc.Value : Sales Order Has been saved but not delivered
Open Item : Sales Order has been saved , Delivered, Billed & Transfered to FI, but not received the payment from the customer.
Static Credit Check it checks all these doc value & check with the credit limit
1) Open Doc.Value / Sales Order Value : Which is save but not delievered
2) Open Delivery Doc.Value : Which is delivered but not billed
3) Open Billing Doc.Value : Which is billed but not posted to FI
4) Open Item : Which is transfered to FI but not received from the customer.
Dynamic Credit Check 1) Open Doc
2) Open Delivery
3) Open Billing
4) Open Items
5) Horizon Period = Eg.3Months
Here the System will not consider the above 1, 2, 3 & 4 values for the lost 3 months.
====================
Question 1: Could you further explain the above information, if there is any?
Question 2:: What is the Tcode to customize settings of:
a) Simple Credit Check (isn't this same with b) below?)
b) Static Credit Check
c) Dynamic Credit CheckHi Tanish,
Diff between Static and Dynamic Filters.
Example One at report Level.
Create a variable for a Infoobject say ,Material .
1)In the Query Designer and if u restrict it to some 10 materials at query level, the report will display for only those 10 materials only.This is Static Filter.UR AHrdcoding it to those materials.You cant change them at Query Run time.i.e not changeable by user.
2)If u give the variable as input ,and when u run the query ,u can can choose the material,may 10 may be 1 or may 20 .It is dynamic.Changeable by user at run time
Example Two at DTP and Start Routine Level,say Document Type.
1)If u give filters in Start routine it is Static as u cannot change it in Production,not changeable by user.
2)f u give filters in DTP it is Dyanamic as u can change it in Production.U can give any doc type,Changeable by user at run time.
Hope it is Understood.
