Non-static and static errors

Hi,
I've created a couple classes, say, Input and Output both with a number of different methods.
Output holds an integer value that Input needs access to.
I created a method in Output to return the value, such as
//doneItemCount is declared up here somewhere, etc
public int items()
     int returnvalue = doneItemCount;
     return returnvalue;
My Input class has a method from which it tries to get that value
public void blah()
int test = Output.items();
but no matter what i try i get
non-static method items() cannot be referenced from a static context
int test = Output.items();
If i make the methods static, then i get the same error for doneItemCount not being static or whatnot.
Any tips on how to overcome this?

This error means that you are mixing up static and non-static methods. If you keep items() as you wrote it, then it's not a static method, and you'll have to create or use an Output variable in the blah() method. If I'm not clear:
In Output, you put:
public int items()
return doneItemCount;
And in Input, you put either:
public void blah()
int test = new Output().items();//not very useful
or, if you declared and instanciated an Output variable(say blabla) somewhere else in the Input class, you put:
public void blah()
int test = blabla.items();
Anyway, you should keep items() non-static, since it needs to access to an attribute(doneItemCount).
Hope this'll help. When I first met this error, I thought it was quite a weird solution, but you get used to it. And the compiler leaves you alone :).

    But I have to admit, that it still hasn't helped me solve my problem. There's obviously something I haven't yet grasped and if anyone could make it clear to me I would be most grateful.
    Bascially, I've got a servlet that instatiates a message system (ie starts it running), or, according to the action passed to it from the form, stops the message system, queries its status (ie finds out if its actually running or not) and, from time to time, writes the message system's progress to the browser.

    Do I assume that when I instantiate the object imsRequest thus;
    IMSRequest imsRequest = new IMSRequest();
    imsRequest.startIMS(response); I am no longer in a static method? That's what I thought. But the problem is that, in the class, IMSRequest I start to get compile problems saying that I can't access non-static variables from a static method, and so on and so on.
    I know I can cheat by changing these to static variables, but there are some specific variables that just shouldn't be static. It seems that something has escaped me. Can anyone point out what it is?

    One thing that puzzles me here: It seems to me that FP uses IMSReq, but IMSReq also uses FP. Is that the case? Those two way dependencies can make things ugly in a hurry, and are often a sign of bad design. It may be perfectly valid for what you're doing, but you may want to look at it closely and see if there's a better way.

    Yes, that's how I originally had it, but then changed it to the outputText approach since a single tag could do what I wanted, as long as I was allowed to mix static and dynamic content within a single value.
    I think this is a bug in JSF 1.1, since if what I am doing is illegal, it should throw an exception on the first page view, not work on first view and throw an exception on subsequent views. I'm guessing that this has something to do with the fact that on first page view it only runs the restore view and render response JSF phases, while on subsequent requests all of the phases will be run, and it's in one of those other phases that the exception is thrown.
    For now, multiple tags is the work-around, I guess.

  • Using both Dynamic and Static NAT with two Different Internet facing Subnets

    We have two Class C Public Address subnets.  We started with Subnet (A) and have many of our Internet accessible devices on it. It is running on a Cisco PIX 515R. We bought a new ASA 5510 8.3(2) and started Migrating the Users and new servers to it so I started with our second Class C Subnet (B).   Later on down the road I found out that if the Firewalls Default Gateway is is set to a (B) Interface subnet, then the servers that are statically mapped to a (A) Address will have a (B) address when they communicate out to the internet.  So they are receiving packets on their (A) Address, though replying to them with a (B) address. 
    It was mentioned that I should be able to combine static and dynamic NAT mapping to allow devices behind the firewall to have a fixed external Address when communicating outbound as well as inbound. 
    So For instance I want the Following: when the Internal Replies I want the reply to come from the mapped IP, not a IP from the Dynamic Pool.

    Not sure why I have Multiple Entries. )-: I did think it was Odd. I think it might be because I looking at examples of the new and old styles of NAT.
    We have a Single ISP, though have 2 separate non-Contiguous  Class C Addresses from them. We host some Servers on one subnet and some on the other. 
    I'm looking for a way to use both Subnets on the same ASA. 
    The Connection to the net looks like this:
    Internet -> Edge Router Layer3 VLAN Switch
    GE0/1.2 - 192.168.1.1 VLAN Tagged --> GE0 - VLAN Tagged
    GE0/1.2 - 192.168.5.1 VLAN Tagged -^
    Layer3 VLAN Switch Firewall
    GE1 192.168.1.0/24 Untagged -> ASA Outside-1
    GE2 192.168.5.0/24 Untagged -> ASA Outside-5
    Firewall
    ASA inside 10.0.0.0/16 -> Switch -> 10.0.0.100

    I could try to post some sanitized Configs of my PIX and ASA if needed.  But the end result I'm trying to do is have the ASA do NAT for multiple Public Subnets. 

  • MS NLB with ASA and Static NAT from PUP to NLB IP

    Hi all,
    I am trying to get MS NLB up and running.  It is almost all working.  Below is my physical setup.
    ASA 5510 > Cat 3750X >2x ESXi 5.1 Hosts > vSwitch > Windows 2012 NLB Guest VMs.
    I have two VMs runing on two different ESXi hosts.  They have two vNICs.  One for managment and one for inside puplic subnet.  The inside puplic subnet NICs are in the NLB cluster.  The inside public subnet is NATed on the ASA to a outide public IP.
    192.168.0.50 is the 1st VM
    192.168.0.51 is the 2nd VM
    192.168.0.52 is the cluster IP for heartbeat
    192.168.0.53 is the cluster IP for NLB traffic.
    0100.5e7f.0035 is the cluster MAC.
    The NLB cluster is using MULTICAST
    I have read the doumentation for both the ASA and CAT switch for adding a static ARP using the NLB IP and NLB MAC. 
    For the ASA I found

    ASDM
    Configuration > Device Management > Advanced > ARP > ARP Static Table
    I was able to add my stic ARP just fine.
    However, the next step was to enable ARP inspection.
    Configuration > Device Management > Advanced > ARP > ARP Inspection
    My ASDM does not list ARP Inspection, only has the ARP Static Table area. Not sure about this.
    For the CAT Switch I found

    I added the both the ARP and Static MAC.  For the static MAC I used the VLAN ID of the inside public subnet and the interfaces connected to both ESXi hosts.
    On the ASA I added a static NAT for my outside Public IP to my inside pupblic NLB IP and vise versa.  I then added a DNS entry for our domain to point to the outside public IP.  I also added it to the public servers section allowing all IP traffic testing puproses.
    At any rate the MS NLB is working ok. I can ping both the Public IP and the Inside NLB IP just fine from the outside. (I can ping the inside NLB IP becuase I'm on a VPN with access to my inside subnets)  The problem is when I go to access a webpade from my NLB servers using the DNS or the Public IP I get a "This Page Can't Be Displyed" messgae.  Now while on the VPN if I use the same URL but insied use the NLB IP and not the Public IP it works fine. 
    So I think there is soemthing wrong with the NATing of the Public to NLB IP even tho I can ping it fine.  Below is my ASA Config. I have bolded the parts of Interest.

    Any help would be great! I think the issue is in teh NAT as I am able to access NLB IP from the outside and could not do that before adding the Static ARP stuff.

    Also If I change to NAT from the public IP to the NLB IP to use either one of the phsyical IPs of the NLB cluster (192.168.0.50 or 51) it works fine when using the public IP.  So it's definatly an issue when NATing the VIP of NLB cluster.

  • Can we call same VI statically and dynamically in same application ?

    I am having an application where i call a VI dynamically using VI server. However at some other place in the same application, i call the VI statically (i.e. the VI icon is placed in the block diagram of parent VI). But when i run the application i get following error message:
    "Possible reason(s):
    LabVIEW: The VI is not in a state compatible with this operation."
    Why is it so ?. Can we not call the same VI dynamically and statically at two differenct locations in the main program ?.

    If a VI is statically in a running hierarchy, it can be also called dynamically using "Call by Reference" node after opening it with a its type specifier refnum. However, you can't invoke the Run VI method, the same way you can't run it using the Run arrow.

  • [weblogic 8.1-sp4] EAR and statics placement

    stupid question maybe, but i haven't found any clue.
    i have an EAR with some WARs and static stuff packed at the root of the EAR like "images/foo.gif", "styles/bar.css" etc. in our JSPs inside the WARs we use JSTL core "url" tag to resolve these links like <img src="<core:url value="/images/foo.gif"/>"> or <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="<core:url value="/styles/bar.css"/>">. all the stuff was in a single WAR before, but now when i've moved the statics away to the root of our EAR all such links are apparently broken.
    so the first question is how do i refer to statics placed at the EAR root from JSPs inside WARs (possibly without changing all thousands of pages that we have)?
    and the second is why none of the resources are accessible from browser using "http://localhost:7001/images/foo.gif" or "http://localhost:7001/styles/bar.css", which always give 404? could it be due to security constraints?

    I meant exactly what I said. You have to figure out the best way to implement that. If it's most effective to merge the WARS, then do that. There are other possibilities. You could deploy the shared content on a content delivery network (a fancy term for a separate fast server farm) and have your separate WARs reference them with external URLs to the CDN.
    Concerning the "why" question, I would just say "because". WebLogic is an implementation of the JEE specification. They've added extensions, but nothing that directly addresses your issue.

  • Converting from non-static to static

    I am tyring to convert a method from non-static to static. I changed a few variables to get it to work and everything is now static in the method except for the getClass() method which it calls, does anyone know how I could work around this.
    Heres the method -

  • Airport Extreme and Static IP

    My ISP requires a static IP address. When I connect my MacBook pro to ethernet and set manual properties it always sticks and works. However when I set up my airport extreme manually it always changes the ip address to one that is non functional and will not let me connect to internet. How do I get the IP address that i set to remain saved after every restart.

    The whole point of a home router is to let you share one real-world IP address amongst more than one computer in the house. In order to do that, the home router must give out new IP addresses that's in the private address pool (which are not valid on the outside world), and then the router will direct outside traffic to the correct home computer on the inside.
    To use a static IP address assigned to you by the ISP. You open the Airport Utility, select the AEBS on the list and click manual setup
    Go to the Internet pane and setup as follows:
    Connecting Using: Ethernet
    IPv4: Manually
    IP Addr: Given by ISP
    Subnet Mask: Given by ISP
    Router Addr: Given by ISP
    DNS Servers: Given by ISP
    Sharing: Share a public IP address

    It sounds like you are getting static on both the receiver and the speaker when you make a call. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help resolve the issue named:

    Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings > Enable Airplane Mode, wait five seconds, then turn off airplane mode.
    Check your phone settings:

    See if Call Forwarding is turned on: Tap Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding.

    I've done the following to set an static ip address for my Suse 9 Linux box:
    - Take not of inet address value from ifconfig command. ie: (172.17.2.14)
    - Change this value in /etc/hosts for my linux box.
    Since Suse is configure by default to use DHCP for assigning dinamic ip_addresses i'm not sure whether will lastly be set as a static address. I've rebooted my box and it seems to be OK.

    /etc/hosts is not configuration file for ethernet interfaces.
    Configuration files for ethernet interfaces are stored in /etc/sysconfig/network directory.
    For example if you have eth0 device then configuretion for this device is stored in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file.
    Important directives:
    DEVICE - interface (eth0)
    IPADDR - IP address of interface
    NETMASK - netmask
    BOOTPROTO - "static" for static configuration, dhcp for dynamic configuration via dhcp
    ONBOOT - activating interface during boot (yes/no) (yes - of course :-) )
    GATEWAY - default gateway
    So for example you want setup static IP (192.168.10.1 / 255.255.225.0) for eth0 interface.
    Edit the /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file and your configuration should be:
    DEVICE=eth0
    IPADDR=192.168.10.1
    NETMASK=255.255.255.0
    BOOTPROTO=static

    Here the System will not consider the above 1, 2, 3 & 4 values for the lost 3 months.

    Diff between Static and Dynamic Filters.
    Example One at report Level.
    Create a variable for a Infoobject say ,Material .
    1)In the Query Designer and if u restrict it to some 10 materials at query level, the report will display for only those 10 materials only.This is Static Filter.UR AHrdcoding it to those materials.You cant change them at Query Run time.i.e not changeable by user.
    2)If u give the variable as input ,and when u run the query ,u can can choose the material,may 10 may be 1 or may 20 .It is dynamic.Changeable by user at run time
    Example Two at DTP and Start Routine Level,say Document Type.
    1)If u give filters in Start routine it is Static as u cannot change it in Production,not changeable by user.
    2)f u give filters in DTP it is Dyanamic as u can change it in Production.U can give any doc type,Changeable by user at run time.
