Noob on overclocking here,,,,,,,, hello?

Finally decided to give the overclocking a try. Just installed a Thermaltake Volcano 11 on my Build #2. I am going to attempt to crank it up a little. Now I understand this much, I should give the thermal paste (Artic Silver 5) a while to set in, so I will try in a week or two.Long enough?
With the new heat sink and fan, anything I should look out for during break in?
I chose not to install the temp probe and set it to manual. Is that ok?

Set fsb/Dram ratio to 1:1, move up in small amounts to 200FSB, and if you have a unlocked multiplier lower it to 10 to start out with.  If you cant reach 200 X10 jump the Vcore up to the next highest level and try again.  When/if you can reach this setting run prime (set up properly Here) and watch your temps.

  • Budget of 1200 for new Camcorder...Noob on FCE here

I need some assistance. Leaving for Disney World with my daugther and I want to take video. I use FCE dabbling around from little clips I Have shot with my canon still.
But now I want a camcorder. So my question is this ? With about 1200 to spend...
Hard Disk, Memory Cards or Mini DV ?
High Def or Standard Def ?
    CMOS of 3 CCD ?
And with all that in mind...Can someone just tell me which one to go buy that will work in FCE with no problems??
    Thanks Everyone

    -MiniDV
    -Standard Definition
    -Whichever floats your boat
There is no point in telling you a specific model to buy. It's something you really need to just go to a camera retailer and make your own decision. As long as it's MiniDV and has a FireWire/iLink jack, it'll work with FCE.

  • Overclocking I7 920 DO and X58 Pro mobo

Hello guys would be very greatfull if someone could please help me. I have just purchased the I7 920 DO and an X58 pro mobo and im a noob at overclocking the only overclocking ive ever done was with basic programs ie Ntune.Ive read hundreds of forums and im still none the wiser my head is spinning.I would like to no if anyone could give me a list of were everything should be ie base clock and so on. Im not after a big overclock between 3.2 and 3.6 would be ok for now ive read on some forums you can leave everything as it is for about 3.4ghz and just increase the base clock is this true it also states this in this months pc format magazine.Ive checked with everset and my idle cpu temp is between 27 and 34, core 1 is 46, core 2 is 44, core 3 is 47, core 4 is 42, i havent checked these on full load, also in the oc program that came with the mobo everything keeps changing the cpu speed goes from 1.6ghz up to 2.9ghz this is also the case with everest and the oc program alarm on the system 3 fan keeps going off even though there is no fan installed in that socket and it reads 0 any advice and suggestions would be greatfull thanx.

The fluctuation you see in speed, is the power saving features in the system. Not to worry, that is normal. Make sure 'Spread Spectrum' is disabled. In 'Advance Bios Features' 'CPU Features', disable all except 'Hyper Threading'. Change 'Mem. Ratio' to 4, 'Uncore Ratio' to 8, 'Advance DRAM Config,' set 1N 9 9 9 24, change base clock to 166, disable 'Extreme Mem. Profile', leave other settings 'default' or 'Auto', & check for post. That should get you around 3.33 & mem. around 1333.
I'm a little curious on your memory modules. What voltage do the they say they run at? If not 1.5v-1.65v, they are the wrong modules for your system. Most i7 X58 RAM is also triple channel 3X2G sets at a max. of 1.65v's.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR probs. And Hello.

Why has it taken me so long to find these forums? I've had my mainboard for 2-3 years now and have had absolutely no trouble with it until now, so maybe that's why I haven't found you. But now I have, wow, thanks for being here  Hello everybody.
So begins my tale of woe. Last week and for about 6 months before that, I had a lovely Radeon X800XL pumping away in my (old, and it will be replaced, but not yet cos I can't afford to) rig, making my fave game ever, World of warcraft, look gorgeous. Then, one morning, my lovely grafs card died on me. Don't know why, no warning, no goodbye, it just passed away in the night.
Full of panic, and not knowing what was wrong, I moved the jumpers to reset the bios. Eventually realising the problem was the card, I borrowed one while I waited for my X1950 to arrive.
Anyway, once I had borrowed the temp card and got my system running again, I went to reset the bios. I haven't been into the bios much since I built the machine, so I'm a bit sticky with the settings. As far as I can remember, the fsb should be set to 200 and cpu speed to X11. I do remember that there wasn't much else that I adjusted when I built it (my first build ever), and my XP 3200+ has been running quite smoothly at 2.19Ghz for at least the last two years.
I don't half go on. don't I. Here, I'll cut to the chase. This is my problem.
When I try setting fsb/cpu speed, 200/X11. my comp won't get to POST, I just hear a bleep (as opposed to the friendly blip when it works) and have to turn off at the back, reset the bios and start again.
Setting to fsb200/auto, results in clock speed of 2300. Comp will boot into windows, but is very unstable.
I have set fsb166/auto and am at present running at 1.91GHz and my processor is being recognised as a 2600+
I surely must have overlooked some basic setting in the bios, but I really can't remember what.
    Oh bios is: Phoenix-Award v.6 00PG
                   W6570NMS V7.8 080204
Please help me, this comp has got to last me til next year.

It was bought and has been running and recognised as a 3200+ for the last 2+ years. Only today is the first time it has ever been seen as a 2600+
When I first set it up, all that time ago, I did everything correctly and by the books, instruction manual, internet etc. I really wanted to get it right, and did. I think the main problem lies with me and MY memory. I honestly think it is a 3200 Boss.
"It was bought and has been running and recognised as a 3200+ for the last 2+ years."
that depend how to be setuped via BIOS. if your CPU is running at 11.5 as Auto multiplier you should have 2600+.(11.5x166) 3200+ rated chip got 11 Multi and NOT 11.5 which your CPU has been detected in Auto. seems you have OC your CPU to run at 3200+ freq.
look here how to ID your CPU:
    grab CBI --> http://cbid.amdclub.ru/files/cbid82b.zip
execute it and look for CPU OPN number.

  • Simple/Easy Overclocking??

I am interested in overclocking my system, slightly. Nothing too advanced. I was wondering, using corecenter, would it be okay to turn on auto overclocking and then let it run until it crashes my system. Then set the FSB to 1 less than the value at which my system crashed. Then, if my system were able to pass a prime95 stress test, leave my fsb at its highest stable overclocked value. Of course, if it did not pass the stress test, reduce the FSB by 1 and repeat until a stable OC FSB is reached. I understand that this would be a VERY rough estimate of max OC but I do not feel like finely tuning it. Also, what is a safe operating temperature for idle and high cpu for extended periods of time.
    Specs
    Cpu: AMD FX-53
    Mem: Ultra 512 mb
Current Idle temp: 37 by Nvidia System Utility
High Idle Temp reached: 50 by Nvidia System Utility

ok was joking bout the smell of burning components..
i was trying to point out that when you start over clocking you will find that untill you find a sweet spot, as you push components you will by the nature of pushing things a little more each time reach the limits of various components.
(and there are a lot of variables.)
one reason why people soft clock i.e use software programs to overclock first before setting the parameters in bios.
and naturally when you try these settings things dont always work every time
if so we would all be clocking to 6ghz and able to keep those 40c temps.
if you are only clocking a little you may not reach the stage where it is so finely balanced that a little here or there is to much and the system crashes for what ever reason.
but if you do push it you will find that the path to higher and higher speeds and settings will be full of crashes reboots and even the odd reformat ! ( fact )
something that cant be avoided !
like i said before it starts with a small overclock here or there , afew mhz more .
then you will get addicted to pushing it a little further every time wait and see.
by the way your temp of 50 at full load aint to bad at all

  • New overclocker w/ core i7 on X58 Platinum

Hey everyone. New to overclocking here, and not looking to break any records (or components). Based on what I've read, 3.2 GHz with a i7 920 shouldn't be too difficult.... except for the figuring out how exactly to do it part.  =)
    Here's what I'm working with:
    Core i7 920
    OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800 (http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr3_pc3_12800_intel-i7_triple_channel)
    MSI X58 Platinum Motherboard (http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=X58_Platinum&class=mb) w/ BIOS 1.10
I've been able to get the CPU to 3.2ghz just by turning up the base clock to 166 in BIOS (not using the hardware switch), but when I do that, I can't get my memory up to a frequency of 1600, even when I manually set the memory ratio - it sticks at 1280 once I save the BIOS settings and reboot. I've tried all the combinations I can think of. My memory supports XMP, but I can't get it to work for me.
Can anyone provide me some clues? Sorry in advance for missing or cryptic info. New to this, but tryin' as best I can.
    Thanks!

Just for the hell of it, I decided to turn down my CPU multiplier, pump the bclk to 200, and see if I could get things working with my memory running at 1600. I left the DIMM voltage at Auto in BIOS, and booted into windows. Started up the MSI Overclocking center.... and it was reporting a DIMM voltage of 1.9. I was..... shocked.... I tried to change it to 1.65 in the OC center, but my machine locked, then it rebooted 3 times and reset it's bios settings. Things seem fine, don't think my CPU was damaged.... but seriously, what the hell?
Mechsner, I know you've said you don't trust windows voltage readings. Could this be a case of inaccurate readings? Can the OC center not be trusted at all? It's matched my BIOS settings in the past.... but this time was just scary.

  • MSI afterburner and overclocking

I am apologizing in advance. I am noob regarding overclocking and stuff like that.
I installed MSI afterburner now and before that i only have had MSI gaming app. I don't want to harm my PC with noobish overclocking  cos i am noob. Is it enough just to turn on that afterburner and msi gaming app just to boost my gaming performance or i need to to a bit more in that afterburner?

    Quote
I just want smoother gameplay and lower temperature ig possible
Smoother gameplay requires more performance, more performance generates more heat, more heat needs more cooling, meaning the fans will spin up and make more noise.
To be honest, with that GPU, you should have good gameplay all round. What temperatures do you see as being problematic? Perhaps you could give an example of what FPS in what game and at what screen resolution and game detail.
    Is your CPU bottlenecking?
Run HWInfo64 in the background. It logs the highest utilization values of all monitored paramaters. Then after gaming you will be able to see if your CPU is actually being saturated, something I doubt, but its not impossible.

  • Z87-G45. VCore setting ignored. Set to 1.147V but maxes out at 1.3V!!

Hi guys, first post here and I couldn't find any similar threads. I'm a complete noob with overclocking, but I had a 4.1GHz overclock on my i5-4670K with 1.147V (1.195V w/ -0.049 offset, adaptive mode) stable for over a year. All other settings were at default.
I reinstalled windows 3 weeks ago, updated the BIOS from 1.8 to 1.9 and the ME drivers. I didn't touch the overclock settings afterwards due to studies, but when I did try a few days ago, the vcore setting I enter in the BIOS seems to be ignored. Using the same settings as before the reinstall (1.195vcore, -0.049 offset, adaptive mode), it is reported by CPU-Z to be 1.28-1.3V during a Prime95 stresstest.
    Unlikely factors:
-error in CPU-Z voltage reading = not likely as the temps are about 20 degrees celsius higher than they previously were (70+ previous, 95-99 current)
-prime95                                 = i used this same program to stresstest the CPU before the reinstall without similar issues
    What I've tried so far:
    - Changing CPU multiplier to 41x vcore to 1.147 without offset = 1.33V reported by CPU-Z (Picture shows these settings)
    - Tried rolling back the BIOS version to 1.8 using MFlash          = no change
The attached picture shows the settings, but the CPU meter temps are still 80+ as I only ran the test for 5 seconds for fear of overheating.
I hope there's a solution to this. I don't have much understanding of what controls vcore (bios, OS, ME, etc) so I don't know what else I can do to diagnose and fix this. If anyone could offer any solutions or help, I would appreciate it greatly.
    Thanks for your time!
EDIT: I only used Command centre to show the voltage setting in the screenshot. BIOS was used to change settings. I might add that command centre has always crashed within half an hour of opening it, and thus I've never relied on it.

Hi again, just an update on my situation. I've effectively corrected my problem, but my OC settings are still not functioning exactly like before.
I reinstalled windows (not a system image restore) without installing any of the mobo drivers that liveupdate recommends. I can achieve a stable 4.1GHz OC with 1.168V (reported by CPU-Z). The only error is that my vcore is set to 1.195 (offset -0.049), which used to give a VID of 1.147V, not 1.168V.
Still, I'm quite happy that at least I can run a stable 4.1GHz overclock at below 1.2V, which didn't work when I started this thread.
Now the only question left, since I purposely didnt install most mobo drivers, is whether I need to install the Chipset drivers or "management engine" drivers listed on my motherboard's support page? (http://www.msi.com/support/mb/Z87-G45-GAMING.html#down-driver&Win7 64)

  • P7N Diamond 1066mhz Reaper boot issue

I have had this machine for a year, originally I had 4 sticks of 800mhz OCZ ram in it, but somehow 2 of the sticks developed errors (1 stick from each batch of 2) and they were returned, I ended up replacing them with 2x2gb OCZ reaper HPC sticks which i have been running at 800mhz (i know thats their ACTUAL speed).
Problem is, they are rated to 1066mhz and its always been niggling at me to run them as they should.
I currently have them set at 1066mhz, 2.1V, 5-5-5-15 and they seem pretty stable, the problem is that the machine wont boot from cold like this, i can sit here all day and use it, but if i shut it down then hit the power button the lights come on for a split second and then nothing. The only way to get it to boot is to reach round and turn the PSU off for 5 seconds then turn it on and it will boot first time. This as you can guess is a real pain in the ass.
If i drop them down to 800mhz it boots fine with no issues, but I would really like to figure out why it refuses to boot like this.
Currently most settings in the cell menu are on auto, i stuck the NB up to 1.4V to see if that would help but it did nothing and the issue remains, any help would be appreciated or I may have to drop the speed down again just to save my back.
Edit: forgot to say im running beta bios 1.2B1

Ok..  I have the exact same ram, and I'll tell you what I did..  First off, the P7N Diamond (and I'm assuming the Platinum as well) doesn't give you an option to change tRFC in the cell menu.  These sticks need the tRFC to be set to 54.  Depending on when you bought your RAM (I bought mine May 08), the sticks may or may not have this change implemented as to whether they FORCE tRFC to 54 clocks.  If yours are a bit older, chances are that they do not have this fix implemented.  I have been assured by OCZ that all NEW 1066 Reaper RAM now has the SPD adjusted to force tRFC to 54 clocks.
If you think you have an older set of RAM, check out this link - http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36341
Instructions are posted there on how to flash the SPD of your Ram to force tRFC to 54 clocks.
Originally, I couldn't understand why I couldn't get my RAM up to its rated speed.  I knew that I would technically be overclocking to get up to 1066 from 800mhz, but every time I changed the speed in the Cell menu I would either get a hard lock or BSOD.  Once I flashed the SPD, everything now works tickety-boo - no problems whatsoever.  Give it a shot..
Also, just a quick note - you probably won't need to give your ram as much juice after you've flashed the SPD..  I know that they're rated up to 2.1 or 2.2v, but chances are at 1066 with 5-5-5-15, you can get away with 1.9-2.0v
Dude Can u tell me the exact settings u have done in BIOS . And I dont think that my system is really stable with these settings . And what does SPD means ? I am really noob in Overclocking .

  • Is there a way to create, save, and access new styles in Mail?

I'm curious if there's some magical way to add styles to the choices offered in Mail. I've hunted through Mail's Help program, and found nothing. Nothing intuitive under the Styles... menu option, either. The Document Styles seem to be Lucida Grande (ick) 13 pt and nothing else (despite arrows that look as though they're designed to shuffle through potential styles); Favorite styles give me Default, Bold, Courier Double Spaced, Italic, Outlined, and Shadowed, none of which is really very helpful at all.
I would like to have easily accessible styles that are, say, 18 point (1.5) line spacing; different fonts, etc. Perhaps this is more a stationery question...but then that seems to beg the question of why have an unintuitive "Styles" option at all.
    Clueless seeking clues here.
