Normal USB usage causes Yosemite to Freeze

Since 10.10 and 10.10.1 Yosemite has been freezing me out of the OS on my 2014 Retina MBP.
It happens regularly when a new USB device is plugged in, or when an already plugged in device has an alteration in it's state of power. The result is that all mouse and keyboard input is impaired/frozen. This includes the trackpad, built in keyboard and external mouse. No amount of plugging and unplugging restores access to the computer. The system still seems to be running as the odd email notification will come up, and once I had a large folder of files copying that seemed to finish. To restore use, I need to force restart.
Other times, plugging in or removing (gracefully) a USB device will interrupt audio playing through my USB sound card, which goes silent for a second, or squeals at a speaker/ear piercing 10,000 Hz. This, and with Ableton live 9 freezing itself every 5 minutes makes using this thing for audio production completely useless.
The triggers so far have been...
Switching my Remote SL midi keyboard off and on again
Switching my Motu Mk3 Ultralight on or off
Switching my DN-MC6000 on or off
Unplugging all of the above directly from the USB port (i.e. hot swap)
Note: I have tried plugging in to my Dlink USB2 hub and also directly into the MBP. The Dlink has been very stable in the past, although audio equipment, and many other USB devices seem to prefer being plugged in to the root port. It's ironic that Apple applies form over function when it comes to the number of USB ports provided, yet seems so unstable when an external hub is used.
Note that the laptop came with Mavericks, and one of the first things I did before installing anything else was accept the Yosemite upgrade. So technically it's not a clean install. But there should have been very little in the way of system files that needed to make the transition.

Try testing without anything but a keyboard and mouse connected. Plug and unplug common things like USB drives or your Camera.
It may be one of these or the required drivers (if they have any):
Remote SL midi keyboard
Motu Mk3 Ultralight
DN-MC6000
If all of those are disconnected and something like a thumb drive causes problems, uninstall the software for all of those things and see if things like a thumb drive or hub works ok. You can test this by booting into Safe Mode which should disable any of the extensions required for those items:

downloading itunes causes computer to freeze because of high computer usage...how do i fix it?

With the Error 2, let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • USB ports causing lag/freezes

    Hi,
Hoping I am posting this in the right place. So, just recently Ive been having some problems with my HP Pavilion laptop. Having a mouse plugged into any of the three USB ports causes sound lag, fps drop and stutters on the movement of the mouse.
I first noticed this in a game where the sound started breaking up along with some frame rate stutter. Checked sound drivers etc and no problems found. Eventually made the link between having a mouse plugged in and the problem occuring. To clarify, when I unplug the mouse all of the problems stop. I can plug the mouse back in and all will be fine for a few minutes and then the stuttering etc will start again.
The problem persists regardless of which port the mouse is plugged into and I have tried a couple of different mice so the problem seems to be internal to the laptop. All the mouse drivers are up to date as are the USB drivers.
Rather at a loss - im hoping someone here can shed some light on the issue.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

    @-Banzai- ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  This may be due to recent windows updates.
Please try doing a system restore back before the problem started.
Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8)
If that does not fix it then check this  out.
Go to control panel, system, device manger....under Human Interface Devices, delete all items and reboot.  The system will reinstall the drivers and hopefully your mouse will work.
Please let me know how things go.
Thank you again for posting and have a great day.
Please click the "Thumbs Up" on the bottom right of this post to say thank you if you appreciate the support I provide!
Also be sure to mark my post as “Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others who face the same challenge find the same solution.

  • USB Drive causes Boot Freeze

I added a new 3T external USB drive and my Mac freezes on bootup if the drive is on.  Anyone know how to fix this?

Check: Apple / System Preferences / Startup Disk to verify that your Mac OS X disk is selected to startup from.
Try ejecting and turning off the External HD before shutting down the iMac. Then in reverse, startup the iMac and then turn on the External HD.
Alternatly: if there is bootable volume on the External HD that you want to boot from, turn on the External HD and then Startup the iMac in Startup Manager.

  • 160gb iPod Classic causes iTunes to freeze/crash

I have a 160gb iPod Classic and when plugged in the USB, it causes my iTunes to crash. My computer recognizes the iPod when plugged in but iTunes does not recognize the iPod and immediately freezes until I force shut down iTunes.  I have an updated version of iTunes, running it on Windows 7.  The iPod works when I am listening to it; however, there seems to be lagging and slower than normal controls compared to when I first purchased the iPod.  I have an iPod Nano that works while I plug it in the computer and iTunes does not crash.  iTunes also works normally when there is no iPod plugged in as well.

Having essentially the exact same problem. I have an iPod Classic 160GB but everytime I connect it to my laptop, iTunes freezes and I have to close it through Task Manager. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on an Acer Aspire 5551 with an AMD Athlon II P320 Dual-Core Processor.
The iPod plays music fine, although it is a little slower and less responsive than when I first had it (no track skips, just browsing menus). iTunes recognises my 8GB iTouch and remains responsive with that but for some reason it freezes when the Classic is connected. The Classic appears in My Computer but doesn't appear to be recognised by iTunes. As far as I'm aware my iTunes is up to date and it runs fine when nothing, or even my iTouch, is connected.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Internet Causes Mac to Freeze Up

    SilSiliMac 27" (Late 2012)
    3.4 GHz Core i7
    32 GB DDR3-1600
    GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB
    OS X 10.8.3
    Safari 6.0.4
I was watching Netflix on the left side of the screen and reading about computer hardware on the right side, both using Safari. Then the screen froze and the cursor froze one second afterwards. I could still hear audio, but the computer was unresponsive: Force Quit didn't work, mouse didn't move, no keyboard input, etc. I held down the power button to force shutdown and then powered it back up again.
The same thing happened about an hour later. I did a full system scan for viruses and malware using two different utilities, both of which reported a clean iMac. I checked the hard drive with Disk Utility and got nothing. I started up using Apple Hardware Test (hold D while booting) and did a quick test which reported nothing. The full test, with 32GB of RAM, will take an entire day.
I have noticed this freezing up when watching video online, mostly through Netflix, but also through YouTube and Vimeo. I thought it was Safari, but I tried it with Firefox, Chrome, and Opera and they all end up freezing at some point. I can't tell how I'm making it freeze or how long it takes to freeze, but it happens when viewing video. It does not happen when watching video through iTunes - only online, regardless of playback method (Flash and   Silverlight both cause it).
I dual-boot Windows and do not have the problem in Windows 7.
I thought it might be a problem with my video card, but I can play FIFA and Skyrim for a couple hours without issue. I thought it might be a problem with Flash, but as far as I can tell Netflix uses Silverlight and that was what caused the initial freezes.
    Any ideas?

I'm not really sure what you're looking for. This is some of the lines from Console before the most recent BOOT_TIME. Then I pasted the contents of System Diagnostic Reports Kernel_2013_04_27 etc., but I don't know if that's what you're looking for. That report was awhile ago, so it doesn't seem like any of my recent problems have been recorded.

  • I have been using my usb as my backup for time machine and now I want to unlock it and use it as a normal usb. How can I do this?

I am having trouble switching my usb from a backup for my time machine to a normal usb for my files.

    Have you reformatted the drive?
Just go to Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder), select the drive and erase it, formatting it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition. You may want to change the name of the drive when you erase it.
    Have you tried that?

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

  • Using Mavericks Spelling and Grammar in Pages document causes Pages to freeze. Must Force Quit. Mavericks spell checker works OK in Text and Emails. How can I fix this problem?

Using Mavericks' Spelling and Grammar in a Pages document causes Pages to freeze, Must Force Quit. How can I fix this problem?
Mavericlks Spelling and Grammar works in Pages when used manually. And it works automatically in Text and email.

    Another autocorrect bug:
I type a lot of lyrics, which tend to cotain words like ’cause and ’em instead of because and them.
I've set up autocorrect instances to change a plain apostrophe with an ending, single curly quote for these words, but they are invariably changed to a beginning, single curly quote mark by Pages. The only way I can get the correct curly quote is to type over the wrong quote manually and hope that I don't have to edit the rest of the word again, as this would cause autocorrect to kick in again and change the quote to the wrong, beginning curly mark again.
Does anyone know how to get around this tedious problem?

  • Browse animation effects causing Bridge to freeze

Every time I select browse effects from the animation menu, Adobe Bridge launches (as expected).
When I navigate to the "Text/Blurs" folder and open it, Bridge freezes.
I know I can add an effect to my text without resorting to Bridge, but I'm following
Adobe's Classroom in a box and selecting this method to preview an effect is
    causing Bridge to freeze.

Make sure your AE and your Bridge are up to date. There was a problem in earlier builds. Also, the Animation Effects previews in Bridge are resource intensive little buggers. Make sure that you have allocated an even number of MB of ram to other apps and you're not starving your system. If you only have 8 GB give 4 to other apps and 4 to AE, if you have 16 then you can give 4 to others and 12 to AE.

  • Am running Firefox 7.0.1 now. Normal memory usage is 157mb but when running Facebook (not running apps nor games), it goes up to 553mb Why?

Am running Firefox 7.0.1 now. Normal memory usage is 157mb but when running Facebook (not running apps nor games), it goes up to 553mb Why?

I encountered the same type of problem. Firefox running terribly slowly and slowing down my entire machine (Core i5 with 256GB SSD). Searching the forums, I found a couple of things about troubleshooting performance issues, one of which was to use '''hardware acceleration''', that is on by default. It was turned on on my PC, '''so I tried deactivating it, and it worked!'''
So doing the exact opposite as Mozilla support said solved the problem. It is really a pain now to work with Firefox. I'm using it because I have no choice, but I'd recommend IE and Chrome over Firefox... Whatever, the market will decide once Firefox has become to crappy...

  • Normal memory usage?

    Hi...
Could anyone tell me what should be the normal memory usage of the server
    just after startup?
I only have a few ejbs deployed and just after startup, my server memory
jumps to 150Mb.. so I'm wondering if this is normal because it looks to me
    like a lot of memory...
I used to work with another application server with the same ejbs deployed
and even after several days up, the server process never took more han
75-80Mb of memory.. Weblogic is taking like twice this amount just after
startup... maybe my tuning is wrong.. is there anythng that I could do to
    lower the memory usage?
by the way. I'm running WLS 7.0 on a win2k machine
    thanks!

    Hi Mathieu,
Generally there is no hard rule defined for all app servers for
how much memory it should use after startup. Why whould you
need to lower the memory usage? Do you have any specific
problem with the digits you've got?
    Regards,

  • My MacBook freezes occasionally...is there a way to bring it out of frozen?  What would be causing it to freeze?

My MacBook freezes @ least once a week.  I have to shut it down.  What might be causing it to freeze & is there another way to bring it out of frozen other than shutting it down?

Not enough free space on the disk can cause the system to freeze...
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space
Check the startup disk in case it needs repairing >  Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.5)  <  your profile
If that is correct, when you can, you need to update to v10.6.8
Updates are available from your Apple menu > Software Update...
Not enough RAM can cause the operating system to freeze also. You may want to consider increasing memory. To see how much memory you have installed click your Apple menu icon then click About This Mac. That will prompt the System Profiler. See Memory under Hardware on the left.

  • Quitting Mail with no free disk space causes it to freeze.

I run out of disk space frequently and, as a result, have encountered one recurring problem.
Mail will attempt to retrieve new messages without disk space on which to store them.
After freeing disk space, Mail remains caught in a loop. Clicking "Get Mail" doesn't refresh the process. Attempting to quit causes Mail to freeze and only a force-quit will end the process.
