Norton AV suddenly blocked iPad backup for Heuristic Virus Bloodhound 115

Today Norton AV blocked the backup stage of syncing my iPad.   This has not happened before.   Norton settings havent changed.   Id have to check but there likely have bene one or two Apps updated on the ipad from the apple store.
The presumption tho has to be that its something on the iPad, rather than Norton suddenly seeing ghosts.   How do i idnetify the culprit and remove it?
All I have to go on is the roaming...\mobilesync\backup...\snapshot\....  file name
The Apple call centre was no help beyond suggesti8ng that I turn Norton off!!!!   (I hope it was just a bad day for the gentleman in question, I really hope they arent trained to say that!).
I get very nervous when things suddnely happen for no apparent reason!

Thanks, Thomas.
I agree, a false posiive is the most likely explanation.   I just try to keep security issues above the "most liely" level of confidence!
FWIW Norton scan of my "laptop" (Del XPS 1730 requires laps of steel lol) has come up clean.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, my main concern is why this happened yesterday and not, say, last month (the last time I did a sync).   (No, I do not have auto update turned on in Norton, or anywhere else for that matter).   Its also curious that, supposedly, the number of reported occurrneces according to Norton is less than 5.
I can not think of anything on either of my machines machine that would be so unique.   Not sure I have the stamina to tackle Symantec customer service (I have a marginal preference for root canal), otherwise it would be interesting to get some follow up on the report that was logged to Symantec by the scanner.
Yes, I do have some spreadsheets shared between the devices (Excel in Windows and QuickOffice in iOS).
Good to hear this particular virus (?) cant harm the iPad; and the laptop looksc clean anyway.

  • File/Block level backup for AWS Amazon EC2 instances?

Block level backups would just be the snapshots.  Mostly you don't want to do full backups of cloud instances, it's ideologically incorrect.  File level backups are different.  Find the things that need to be backed up, like configuration files and database data and back that up.  You can use something like Unitrends or StorageCraft.  Or you can manage this yourself.  Script MySQL to back itself up locally, transfer the backups off with RSYNC or similar tools.

We have a few EC2 instances running on AWS and using snapshots going to a different region as a DR solution, but we don't have a backup solution. I'd like to setup a backup in AWS to backup other EC2 instances. I need the ability to restore MS-SQL and Files to these EC2 instances.

  • Save an iPad backup for use later?

HI folks.  I was wondering if there was a way to backup my iPad, then save it somewhere else so I can use it later if I want to go back to my iPad in it's currrent state without having to worry about new backups overwriting this specific backup.  Possible?  Thanks.

    Hi Rider
Yes you should be do that by finding the back-up file and saving it elsewhere. and then come back in and replace your unwanted back-up.   Then you restore to the desired back-up.

I have never done that but it makes sense.
BTW, icloud does daily back-ups and keeps three back-ups for you to choose from.

Does the app now use iCloud, do you use iCloud and do the two of you use the same account on iCloud?
    Just a guess.

  • Can I use my IPad as a backup for my IMac instead of an external hard drive?

I'm wondering if I can use my iPad as a backup for my iPad instead of an external hard drive?

As your question says backup for your iMac I assume that is what you mean, as opposed to what is in the text. The iPad doesn't have a disk mode, and you can only copy onto it content that is supported by the apps that you've got. So personally I'd say no - external hard drives are easier to use as a backup and are a lot cheaper

  • I just got my refurb iPad in the mail. I am trying to set it up, but im getting this message "iTunes could not back up the ipad because the backup was corrupt or not compatable with the ipad. Delete the backup for this ipad. then try again." How?

I just got my refurb iPad in the mail. I am trying to set it up, but i am getting this error message " iTunes could not back up the ipad because the backup was corrupt or not compatable with the ipad. Delete the backup for this ipad. Then try agian." How do I do that?

It sounds like the iPad wasn't erased to me. If the iPad is totally cleared of content, there should be nothing on it and no backup to create.
Without connecting the iPad to your computer - Launch iTunes on you computer and go to Edit>Prefences>Devices. Do you see an iPad backup in there? If you do see it, delete it.

  • Mu ipad was stolen today and i want to view icloud backup for today. Can i do this?

My ipad was stolen today.  It is not showing up on iCloud.  Can i view iCloud backup for today?   If so how?

Try resetting the Winsock key.  You will have to locate Command Prompt in Windows 8 (in Windows 7 its in Start>All Programs>Accessories), then right-click on it and choose Run as Administrator.**  Once in command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" (without the quotes) and press Enter.  Then restart your PC and see if you can sign in now.
** I saw in another post that to run Command Prompt as an administrator in Windows 8 you do the following:
    Go to the Start menu
Press the Windows logo key + Z to open the app commands.
Press Enter to select 'All apps'.
Use the arrow keys to navigate to the 'Command Prompt' tile.
Press the Application key to bring up the app commands.
Use the arrow keys to navigate to 'Run as administrator' and press Enter. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  • Currently, I have 5 iPads used for the same purpose. Since similar data /application is shared among all of them, is it alright for me "Backup" only 1 iPad. And in which case, if anything happens to any of the other iPads I can still recover the data

Currently, I have 5 iPads used for the same purpose. Since the same data /application is shared among all of these iPads, is it alright for me "Backup" only 1 iPad instead of all 5?  And if anything happens to any my iPads which I have not backed up, I can restore it from the iPad where I have save the Backup. I am hoping by doing so, I will also be able to save some icloud storage space. Let me know if my question is still not so clear to you guys.  Thanks.

    Hello PeachY1234,
If I understand correctly you'd like to save iCloud storage space by only backing up 1 of the 5 iPads to your account since they are all going to have very similar data and usage. You certainly can do that, but I do have to warn you that any unique data between them would be lost if you had to restore from that one backup made on another iPad so just keep that in mind. If you do need to restore in the future you can use this article to restore that iCloud backup:

The device backups and iTunes library should be unaffected by uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes.

  • IPad use for both work and personal by leveraging multiple iCloud backups

I have an original iPad 1 that's my personal iPad.  Since I got an iPhone 5S over a year ago, I almost never use the iPad as it's so frustratingly slow compared to the 5S, and most of the most recent apps don't work on iOS 5.1.1.
I work for a small consulting firm where a large part of my responsibilities is business development.  2-2.5 years ago, I started occasionally needing an iPad for doing sales presentations of enterprise software.  So, I purchased and expensed a then cutting edge 4th Gen iPad.  For work purposes, I've always kept this iPad nearly completely empty except for essential software. In the past 6 months, I've needed this iPad less and less for said presentations.  I'm down to not even turning it on once a month, and have gone 3 months at a time without touching it.  That said, there's always a chance I'll find out that a week from now I'll need to fly somewhere and do a demo using it.
I was really hoping iOS 8 was going to enable multi-user support, but obviously it did not.  I'm now pondering the use of iCloud backups as an effective means of multiple user functionality when you don't have to switch user accounts very often.
My thinking is that I can make sure my personal iPad 1 is fully backed up to my personal 20GB iCloud account, and that the work iPad is fully backed up to the work iCloud account.  I'd then wipe the work iPad, log in to it using my personal iCloud account and let it restore from there.  At that point I'd be using the work iPad for personal use and would completely stop using the iPad 1.
If I found out I needed to demo using the iPad a week later, I would wipe the iPad 4 clean again, after which I'd log in to the work iCloud account, let it restore, and be good to go.  Once done the presentation, I could then wipe it, log back in to my personal iCloud and let it restore.
Every time I found myself needing to use the iPad for work purposes I would simply go through the above process.
    My questions are:
Are there are any holes in my logic?
Am I risking data loss on either the work or personal account?
I assume iCloud accounts can exist with backups intact even if no device is currently utilizing them?Is there any time limit to this?
Besides the time it takes to wipe and restore the iPad, are there any downsides to the above process?
Is there any reason I cannot wipe my iPad 1 and sell it/donate it?
    Thank you in advance.

Ah, MBA makes more sense.  Unfortunately, the point of demoing on the iPad is to explicitly show that the enterprise software is iPad compatible and what it looks like on it.  Everyone's a skeptic, so I definitely have to use the actual iPad and not emulation software.
As far as overwriting a backup, I would think that the only backups ever visible would be those for the account i'm currently logged in as.  I don't see how it's plausible then to overwrite any in the wrong account.  Again, these are 100% separate accounts that have nothing at all connecting them.  If it were possible, wouldn't the people who sell their iDevices on ebay be complaining about how the recipients deleted their iCloud backups.  I'm effectively transferring the device in the same way...just between by own 2 disconnected accounts instead of 2 humans with 2 disconnected accounts.
I don't really view it as a time drain, as when switching accounts I'd just "Reset all settings," and walk away.  I'd later log in as the other user, and would walk away again while the iPad just automatically starts loading everything up.  I'm not sitting there waiting for it, as this is merely a luxury device that I've never once had an immediate need for.  It's just a "nice to have."
Again, this transfer would likely only be happening once every 6 weeks anyway.  The majority of the time it would be set up on my personal account.
WiFi is no issue, as I'd only do this while at home on my 50/50 FiOS.  Again, I never "need" the iPad on my personal account such that waiting until I return home from a trip would be an issue.

You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.
