Not sure what is up with my screen

Hello,
My sister has a Powerbook G4 that is about 4-5 years old. I use it a lot as well as I'm in love with the keyboard and think it's one of the best keyboards.
Lately the screen has started flickering, I went to load a page today and it sort of showed a interference flicker about 3/4 down from the top of the screen and I had to adjust the screen to make to it stop. Then my sister said it's flickered on her before.
What is wrong with it exactly? Is the screen dying or does it need a new battery? My sister has a white Macbook and I have a 17" iMac so it's okay if we have to be without it for awhile but it's our favourite.

There are a couple of sites you might want to check out:
http://www.ifixit.com/
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/
The have step by step guides for taking apart your Mac and replacing things. They also carry many parts. I don't know if they have the cables separately, but they might. You can always call and ask about parts not specifically listed.
If you want to check out the cable itself, you will need to remove the cables and then if there is no obvious break, use a continuity tester like an ohmmeter or a beeper to check conductivity until you find the broken conductor. It may be broken inside the insulation where you can't see it. Look for the break to be where the cable flexes when the PB is opened and closed. Especially look where it enters and exits the hinge.
Good luck!

  • [SOLVED] Not sure what to do with passwd.pacnew

Hey, I have just encountered my first .pacnew file and am not sure what to do with it. I have read the wiki, but I know a lot of this has to be left up to the user, and I don't think I'm educated enough on this to solve it on my own. The passwd file looks like this:
    root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
    bin:x:1:1:bin:/bin:/bin/false
    daemon:x:2:2:daemon:/sbin:/bin/false
    mail:x:8:12:mail:/var/spool/mail:/bin/false
    ftp:x:14:11:ftp:/srv/ftp:/bin/false
    http:x:33:33:http:/srv/http:/bin/false
    uuidd:x:68:68:uuidd:/:/sbin/nologin
    dbus:x:81:81:dbus:/:/sbin/nologin
    nobody:x:99:99:nobody:/:/bin/false
    polkitd:x:102:102:Policy Kit Daemon:/:/bin/false
    avahi:x:84:84:avahi:/:/bin/false
    mysql:x:89:89::/var/lib/mysql:/bin/false
    kdm:x:135:135::/var/lib/kdm:/bin/false
    johnathan:x:1000:100::/home/johnathan:/bin/bash
    git:x:999:999:git daemon user:/:/bin/bash
    systemd-journal-gateway:x:191:191::/:/usr/bin/nologin
    systemd-timesync:x:192:192::/:/usr/bin/nologin
and the passwd.pacnew file looks like this:
    root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
    bin:x:1:1:bin:/bin:/bin/false
    daemon:x:2:2:daemon:/sbin:/bin/false
    mail:x:8:12:mail:/var/spool/mail:/bin/false
    ftp:x:14:11:ftp:/srv/ftp:/bin/false
    http:x:33:33:http:/srv/http:/bin/false
    uuidd:x:68:68:uuidd:/:/sbin/nologin
    dbus:x:81:81:dbus:/:/sbin/nologin
    nobody:x:99:99:nobody:/:/bin/false
    systemd-journal-gateway:x:191:191:systemd-journal-gateway:/:/bin/false
    systemd-timesync:x:192:192:systemd-timesync:/:/bin/false
As you can see, there are quite different, including missing lines in the .pacnew file and a change from polkitd and avahi to systemd. Could anyone tell me what is safe to merge?
    Thanks for your help!

You should use vimdiff, or a similar tool, to identify any updates to the files that you may want to pull into your current config.
I think such changes should also be announced on Arch News / RSS
    i.e. https://www.archlinux.org/news/
So that users know that there are lines to be imported. (Atleast for filesystem package if not other packages)
    EDIT:
I notice that those two users are already there in my system (in both passwd and shadow). So somewhere update already added those users. That is why possibly there was no announcement on Arch News.
But those new users are NOT in *new* shadow. IS IT A BUG? i.e. if users are in passwd, they should in shadow as well right?

  • Installing Infra 10.1.4.0.1 -- not sure what to do with warning received

I understand that in order to use SSO with Forms and Reports Standalone I need to install the Infra. Therefore, I spent the weekiend readiing the appropriate manuals for OID Concepts and Deployment Planning Guide, SSO Admin Guide, and manuals these 2 doc referenced.
I am trying to installing Infra10g on top of Forms and Reports standalone in my test environment on my laptop before I install on our servers.
My test environment is Windows XP. I am in the process of installing the Oracle Application Server Infrastructure 10g 10.1.4.0.1.
Select a Product to Install: Oracle Application Server Infrastructure 10g
Select Installation Type/Oracle Application Server Infrastructure 10g 10.1.4.0: Identity Management and Metadata Repository
Now I have the following Warrning:
The installation type you have chosen is not certified for production use on Windows XP.  The following installation type is certified on this platform:
    -- Oracle Identity Federation
You can click OK to continue with this unsupported installation, or go back to the "Selecgt a Product to Install" screen and change your selection.
I serarch on Oracle Identity Federation and didn't come up with much to determine what to do.
I don't need this to be certified, as I only want to play with it on my laptop to get an understanding of SSO. I am not sure that Identity Federation with give me the SSO framework that I need.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated,
    Thank you in advance,
    Mika

Because, you wanted to test SSO with Forms, you will be fine without the IDentity Federation on your test machine.
What Id Fed does is somewhat like the following:
"Although single sign-on (SSO) enjoys wide adoption for its ability to cut down the need for redundant logins, mere SSO is insufficient for companies which must operate in a federated environment - that is, an environment where services need to be shared with business partners while protecting those same services from unauthorized access.
A federated environment enables business partners to achieve integration in the identity management realm, by providing a mechanism for companies to share identity information across their respective security domains."
See this link for [Oracle Id Federation|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28196_01/idmanage.1014/b25355/intro.htm#sthref10] details.

  • Not sure what's wrong with my laptop.

My laptop looks like this (picture below) when I turn it on. I took it in to fix it because I was getting the blue screen but when i got it back they gave it to me like this and they told me it was a graphics card problem but I am totally confused. By looking at the picture, do you think that the screen is broken or could it be a video/graphics card problem? Any other possiblities? Thank you for your help!!
P.S. Not sure if it's needed but the model is dv7-4069wm

    Hi arelymedina,
I will be happy to help you with trying to resolve the graphics problem with your HP Pavilion dv7-4069wm Entertainment Notebook. Have you been able to connect an external monitor to see if that shows the same issue? This is a way that we can make sure it's not the hardware of the notebook screen itself.
    Looking forward to your response.
    Thank you,
I worked on behalf of HP.

  • Not sure what's wrong with my computer

I have a HP pavilion a200n. It was working great on 12/20/08. I went away for a few days and when I came home and turned it on it would not load windows, all it would go to a page that showed these confirgurations and at the bottom "F1 for settings". If I try pressing "F1 or shift F1" I just get a beeping sound.  Any answer or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Marcia

    Hi Marciah0219, welcome!
Hockeycunuckjc has a good idea, just want to remind people to always perform a backup (or get help) before doing a system restore.  However, because you stated you cannot get into safe mode, you may need to just shut down the machine, unplug the keyboard and carefully reconnect it; also consider trying another keyboard.  If these tests do not work, please reply with the beep pattern (for example, one long and one short beep - pause - repeats).

  • Help///Not sure whats going on.. black screen

So my iphone 4s died and when i plugged it in, no charging thing popped up. I tried different chargers, car, computer etc... and when i hold the sleep button or any other button the screen stays black.

I was on my way home and my phone died, so i got home and plugged it in and it did show that it was charging, but it sat at that screen with the charging symbol for almost 20-30 minutes. So I unlugged it and tried a different charger and it did the same thing, then it just didnt show anything at all.

  • My phone is 2 weeks old and would not update/sync this morning, told me I would have to restore. It will not resotre and gives me an error code 17 and 56? I have the latest version of I tunes on my computer and am not sure what to do with this

Does these error codes mean that I have to replace my brand new phone. Should I go into Verizon, or take it straight to Apple???

It's possible there is a problem with the server you are syncing to. I'd wait a bit, try again a little later.

    I have a 2nd generation Ipod.
I have it connected to my computer and see (my name) ipod on my screen.
Everytime I try to add a new song to the Ipod, this message comes up and I am not sure what to do:
The Ipod, (my name) is synced with another ITunes library on A74F65. Do you want to erase this Ipod and sync with this ITunes Library?
An Ipod can be synced with only one ITunes library at a time.  Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this IPod with the contents of this ITunes library.
Then it asks me if I want to delete and sync.
I am not sure what to do for fear of erasing everything I have put on my Ipod.
I would appreciate if someone could help me out.

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to use iTunes to play the Music in your iPod but which is not in your itunes library. I don't think Apple design iTunes for use in your way. As to put and play music in iPod, the music has to be in iTunes first, so you play music in the iTunes music Library. the window with Ipod music is just to show you which music are already in the Ipod, in case you want to Manually Manage your huge music library.
Here is the iPod/iTunes manual from the Apple Support Site.

My 5th generation iPod (bought in April of 2013) will quit unexpectedly. I can't do app store apps (like snapchat or facebook, ect.) or apple apps (like Camera, Safari, ect.)It will take for ever to load what I write while texting. It also just goes to the black screen with the Apple logo. I'm not sure what to do.

    Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    If no joy...
    Reset all settings
Settings > General > Reset > Reset all Settings.
This will return all iDevice settings to factory defaults... you will not lose any data.... But you will have to re-enter all of the device settings.
    If the issue persists...

  • My MacBook is stuck on the loading screen. Please help! Not sure what to do

Hi, so my MacBook has stopped working for some reason
I've just tried switching it on but it has stopped on the loading screen.
I am scared and not sure what to do.
    Please help!!!

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 8
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. If you can't get to an Apple Store, go to another authorized service provider.

  • Garbled Images on the screen, not sure what is going on

Everything was going fine and then I left my computer on overnight and everything was garbled on the screen and couldn't be read. I connected it to an external display, same issue. I took a screen shot and sent to another Mac, and it showed all of the issues. I wish there was a way to post the image, it may help with coming up with a solution. I rebooted, no change. I reformatted and reinstalled 10.4, no change. The strange thing is, is that if I boot from my TechTool disc, everything looks fine. Also, if I boot into safe mode (shift key held down), everything looks fine as well. I am not sure what is going on, and what to do to fix it. Hopefully someone out there can point me in the right direction. I don't want to have to get rid of my iBook. TIA.

    Macspud,
Well if pressure from underneath didn't help there is this:
    http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/
Which basically involves pressure on other chips.
I have been slowly working on that 1.33 iBook but I've been busy, vacation and working. I have found suspicious looking solder joints in the area indicated and also on that Danish site. That might be a good idea I might try that with the 1.33 pressure on various chips while trying to boot.
As far as video memory there are two identical chips underneath and toward the video output from the ATI GPU chip. I don't see that they are clearly BGA but there's also no conventional peripheral conventional solder tabs or lands.
Another point, there are 2 huge and a large chip on this board and they're all BGA. The large one being the CPU. So there would also be another 3 points of failure. Any one of these that pressure corrects could be reballed or shim fixed.

If you can log in blindly or using the flashlight method, it is possible your screen brightness somehow got set all the way to nothing.  I don't have my Macbook with me right now to test it out but I believe it may not be possible to adjust the brightness at the log-in screen so you have to be able to log in first (though I could be wrong on that).

Try to boot in Safe mode, see if you are able: Hold down shift and then power on. For wireless keyboards, hold down shift after the chime.

Sorry - we can not see you
what do you have? Version of iPhoto? Of the OS? How is the passport connected to your Mac? What format is the passport (for the iphoto library it must be Mac OS extended (journaled)  )?  The iPhoto library is not and can not be on the cloud (maybe later with the Photos Application)
