MacBook not going to sleep when connected to WiFi
Hi there,
my MacBook 3,1 is not going to sleep as long as it is connected to WiFi.
It starts the process of going to sleep as my VNC connection gets dropped but it stays awake. I can easily reconnect.
Everthing else is working fine. Any suggestions?Hello everyone,
I'm facing the same syptom. I tried many things and now havw to live with putting the MacBook to slee by hand. I had some other issues just before that:
1: The MB returned randomly from sleep while being closed. That was annoying. I think it was fixed after installing smart sleep and doing some cleanup in the preference files.
2: Then I was put "randomly" to sleep. I figured that came from overheating the processor (thus I'm gld it went to sleep). The fan speed control was set to constantly 2000 rpm. Installing fanControl helped.
3: Lid closing did not init the sleep mode and the backlight is not turning off. Niether does it wake up on opening when I put it io sleep manually (I have to press a key).
The sensor for closing the lid seems to work, if it is the same which controls the maximum brightnes of the sleep indicator light (pulsing). It is darker when the lid is closed.
I wonder if there is some settings tool.
Besides I think the issues started after the Software updates around 12th of dec. 2008, with MacOS10.5.6 and the EFI & SMC firmware updates.
I'm eager to get answers.
Kid regards, Ralf. -
HELP... Since last week, I can not awake from sleep. After reading a review I downloaded Deep Sleep, but after the first deep sleep, my MBP (late 2011 with Mountain Lion), developed a problem restarting from sleep. I straight away uninstalled Deep Sleep, but the problem has increased.
Now when I try to awake from sleep, a grey screen with the apple logo appears with a progress bar underneath it, which slowly moves to the forelast indicator, then it stops and a audio signal starts. Three bleeps and pause.
Then when I press the on/off botton and restart the system, the underneath error reports appears with the heading RAPPORTD unexpectedly failed.
Can any one help?

Windows 8.1 does not go to sleep reliably anymore
I recently did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro x64 (final version). Before doing the clean install, all hardware being identical, my Windows 8 was ran smoothly and went to sleep fine automatically after the set time.
Now, after the clean install, although I believe I have installed and set up everything as before, the computer does not reach standby automatically anymore most of the time. To be precise, when I reboot or log off and on the PC, the sleep functionality
is re-established for a while, but after 1 or 2 hours of work it invariably gets lost.
However, as soon as I disable the Ethernet adapter, the PC sleeps as expected.
I do not seem to be able to figure out why this is, or how my configuration is different than before.
Here are a few specs about my hardware: ASRock Z77E-ITX mainboard (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77E-ITX/, has the Windows 8.1 compatibility sticker), Intel Core i7-3770, 4x 3.40GHz including Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics (no external graphics installed),
Intel 530 Series SSD, Intel 520 Series SSD, WD HDD. I have use a wired Ethernet connection, my Ethernet chip is from Broadcom. Wifi chip is disabled.
Since this has been a pervasive issue with all Windows versions, the internet is full of suggestions how to resolve this matter. Why I am not convinced that the old advice still has any bearing as I tend to think Windows 8.1 introduced new issues (bugs?),
for the sake of covering all bases, I tried almost every tip I could find on the net and will list my fruitless attempts in the following. It might also be useful as reference for other people trying to tackle such issues.
1) Installed latest Windows 8.1 drivers from Asrock's homepage. I also tried chip manufacturer's like Intel's own drivers, did not make any difference (so far).
2) Left the homegroup and disabled homegroup functionality as for example in these threads it has been argued that this is a new issue with Windows 8.1: http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/28226-windows-8-1-refuses-sleep-2.html
http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/33221-windows-8-1-does-not-go-sleep-standby-automatically.html
3) In the Ethernet adapter's settings, I unchecked ipv6. I also made sure the device cannot be awaken through the network.
4) I even went so far to disable network discovery as
file and printer sharing (both in private and public profiles) and disable
public folders.
5) Even though sharing is disabled, I also made sure that within the energy options the computer is
allowed to sleep when sharing media.
6) powercfg /requests returns "none".
7) ran powercfg /energy duration 300 from an elevated command prompt while the ethernet adapter was enabled. It found 9 errors, mostly related to USB hubs, but the same errors were also recorded when I repeated the exercise having the ethernet
adapter disabled. So these errors are probably not relevant for the problem at hand.
8) powercfg /devicequery wake_armed : just the mouse and keyboard appear
9) I tried netstat which shows many connections but do not know how to interpret them or what to look for. Same for
Wireshark. If anybody can guide me on how to use these tools, I am happy to learn about it.
10) powercfg -requestsoverride DRIVER \FileSystem\srvnet SYSTEM
did not help, reverted it.
11) Uninstalled software some would find suspicious: Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client, Shadowprotect Desktop backup software, VMware player. Did not help.
12) I also have a MySQL server installed, which I did NOT uninstall because it would be too much point reinstalling and reconfiguring it. However, I doubt this is the culprit as with Windows 8 it did not prevent any sleep. Even when I stop the server the
PC does not go to sleep.
This is more or less it. I am out of ideas and welcome any feedback.
Again, when the Ethernet adapter is disabled, the PC sleeps as programmed, but I cannot figure out what communication is responsible for keeping it awake.
Thanks,
SteveHi Steve,
I don't know if you'll feel better but - You are not alone facing the same problems, I am sure that all the power handling in 8.1 is a mess. If I force the comp. to go to sleep mode, after a while it is
not staying in the sleep mode but shutting down autonomously. I suppose there is more hidden bugs.
Tazlam
Isn't your computer just switching from sleep mode to hibernation mode after the amount of time set in your power management settings? This sounds like it, as in hibernation the computer is effectively shut off. This is also intended behaviour.
As you guys, I hope MS releases a fix soon. -
Computer not going to sleep when lid closed
My wife's new MacBook Air has a couple of problems we can't figure out. First sometimes the computer is not going to sleep when lid is closed and when we lift the lid everything is frozen.
Second, the user Library folder is not seeable in her user account. I know it's there because on the side bar there's a short cut to Preferences folder which we can open.
Strange behavior.
Thanks,
RonRon,
The user library folder (~/Library/) is hidden by default in Lion. I assume Apple doesn't want people mucking around with the sensitive files in there. So this is normal behavior.
As for the freezing issue, I would suggest you reset your power management and perform a safe boot to clear out caches. You should also see if the issue persists after disconnecting USB perhipherals.
Here's how:
Power Management:
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
Safe Boot:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear). -
Why will MacBook not go to sleep without Bluetooth?
What does Bluetooth have to do with the computer going to sleep?
My wife's MacBook will periodically lose Bluetooth. Normally, I wouldn't notice or care since we do not use Bluetooth devices. However, her MacBook will not go to sleep when Bluetooth disappears. It will work fine for several weeks after I reboot it a couple of times, and Bluetooth returns.
We both have the same early 2006 MacBook, and my Bluetooth never disappears.
Does she have another problem that is coincidental with the Bluetooth issue?
Anyone else notice that their computer can not go to sleep when they are having a Bluetooth problem?
Have a nice day.
BoydHello Boyd:
What does Bluetooth have to do with the computer going to sleep?
I do not know.
Does she have another problem that is coincidental with the Bluetooth issue?
Possibly, but hard to diagnose.
Try trashing the preference file (com.apple.bluetooth.plist) and restarting.

PC is not going to sleep or shut down after upgrade to Windows10
Hello,I upgraded my laptop from win 8.1 to win 10.Now when I close the lid or press the power button, the computer turns the screen off, turns the WIFI off, no more hard disk activity but it is not going to sleep. Also when I shut it down it goes throught the same procedure but never turns off.To start again, I have to keep pressing the power button to turn it off, then turn it on again.I did the powercfg - energy and got this in the report, "USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Selective Suspend"When the computer had just started, I don't get that message, it also goes to sleep and shuts down normally, while later, I get this message in the report and no longer sleeps or shuts down.Any suggestion ??Thanks
Hi ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 15 Notebook and issues with sleep or shut down after upgrade to Windows 10. Try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix the problem. Here is a document that shows how to update drivers that are not working correctly with Windows 10. HP has been working closely with Microsoft on the development of Windows 10. I hope this helps. Thanks. -
Satellite P845t-10G does not go to sleep closing lid after Win 8.1 upgrade
Hi,
I own a P845t-10g and since I upgraded to Win 8.1 the laptop does not go to sleep (or shut down) when closing the lid.
However, when opening the lid, it wakes from sleep mode.
I tried installing latest Toshiba systems settings utility and all updates on the support site.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Thanks!Did you check the option called: What closing the lid does?
Click on the 'Power Options' icon in taskbar (or in control panel).
Then click 'More power options'. Now a new windows will open. On the left side panel click on 'What closing the lid does'.
Now you will see two possible mode: battery and plugged in. For each mode you can set the action for closing the lid.
BUT one question: did you upgrade the Win 8.1 following the instruction from Toshiba?
http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-message/ Did you install all the Toshiba Windows 8.1 drivers and utilities in the right order!? -
Monitor Not Going To Sleep on Mac Mini Server With Lion
Summary: I am attempting to configure a Mac Mini Server that runs OS X Lion. This machine was originally shipped with OS X Lion; it is not an upgrade. My current specific problem is that my Viewsonic VX2835wm monitor will not go to sleep when the minutes setting on the Display Sleep setting for Energy Saver has been reached. Instead, the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds and is replaced with a blank blue backlit monitor. (Ironcially, the display sleep menu cautions: "Never letting your display go to sleep may shorten its life".) I very much want and need the ability to have my monitor go to sleep so as to save energy and to extend the monitor's life for as long as possible.
Additional Background: I have had a couple of calls with Mac support and they have been unable to tell me whether this is a "design feature" or a flaw in the Lion OS because they have had no similar reports and they do not have the latest hardare available running Lion Server to test to see if this happens with other monitors. (They also, of course, don't have the VX2835wm monitor.)
I do, however, know the following:
(1) My HDMI monitor is connected to my Mac mini via a DVI KWM switch (ATEN CS1784) such that the HDMI output from my Mac is converted to DVI (using the DVI to HDMI converter that came with my Mac Mini) and is then run through the KVM and then converted back to HDMI (using a full pin DVI to HDMI cable). However, I have tested the monitor with a straight HDMI to HDMI cable running directly from the Mac Mini to the monitor and it has not changed anything.
(2) The Lion operating system correctly recognizes (in Hardware / Displays) the model of my ViewSonic monitor.
(3) I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard (OS X 10.5.8) that is connected to the same monitor through the same KVM switch (by way of a BookEndz docking station) which properly shuts down the monitor when there has been no activity for however many minutes are set in the Display Sleep setting under Energy Saver. (Indeed, all I want is the same functionality on my Mac Mini that I have enjoyed for the last two years with this MacBook Pro.)
(4) When fully connected to the KVM, if I switch from my Mac Mini to my MacBook Pro and my Mac Mini display goes to sleep while I am working on my MacBook Pro, when I switch back to the Mac Mini, my monitor backlight will be off (and the power light will be standby yellow rather than the blue on) until I wake my computer up by touching the mouse of keyboard. I wonder if this may mean that the Mac Mini's signalling of the change in status from on to standby is somehow dysfunctional.
(5) Shutting down the server functions (and other open applications) has no effect.
I would greatly appreciate feedback from anyone out there running a Mac Mini with Lion regarding whether or not their monitors go into standby mode when the Display Sleep time is reached (please note whether or not you are running the Server or Client version, whether or not it is a new install or upgrade, and what monitor you are using).
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. No, I didn't solve the problem. The monitor still goes to sleep with WIndows but not with my Mac Mini. About 8 months ago I basically wore out the power switch on my monitor so I bought a wireless power switch to shut it off at the outlet. The VX2835wm monitor itself is now starting to fail as well-- a couple of times it's gone through a weird sequence of flashing screen colors on power up and ended up in an overscan mode (that took me for ever to figure out how to fix). I have decided to replace my VX2835wm with a Dell u2412m once it fails for good partly because I really want to keep the 16:10 resolution (very hard to find these days) and partly because I want to see if a different make of monitor will go to sleep properly based upon my Mac Mini power down settings.

Can I use my several-years-old IMac OS 10.4 to set up a wireless router, such as Aiport Base, so I can have wifi for the iPhone I plan to buy. My IMac is not wife capable.
Yes, Airport Express Base Station connected to your Mac by ethernet will work as a bridge. Or you can connect the AE directly to your router/modem by ethernet if it's a non-wi-fi router and it will act as a relay for that.

How can I set my mac (and the screen) to not go on sleep mode ?
I just want my mac (and the screen) stay alive for a minimum of 8 to 10 hours, not going in sleep mode (or save screen). Just displaying a web page without doing anything else. In preference system, energy save is all set to «never», but after a while the screen goes to sleep ... ?
You probably have a corrupt .plist file. To fix:
1. Hold down the option key.
2. In the Go menu in the Finder, scroll down to Library
3. In Library, find Preferences
4. In Preferences, find com.apple.systempreferences.plist and drag it to the trash
5. restart
6. you will have to reenter your preferences.
Another option is caffeine: Lighthead - Caffeine -
LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw will not go to sleep
I just bought a LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw. Through the LCD Control Panel I set it up to go to sleep after 5 minutes. It will not go to sleep, the LCD panel is always on. I did the following from the LCD panel: Setup Menu >>System Setup >> Energy Settings >> Sleep/Auto Off after >> 5 Minutes Printer is connected via wireless. I'm using this printer on a Mac OSX 10.9 (Mavericks) and have installed the latest driver software from HP Support website. Anyone has noticed this problem and is there a solution to it? Thanks.
Hi tuanomsoc, I hope you had a good weekend!
The printer has a built-in surge protector, so by plugging into a surge protector or a power bar, it can cause power drains that affect the functionality. I would recommend the post below by , who has provided a helpful write-up on this exact question: Power Supply Related Issues Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for posting on the HP Forums! -
F3507g GPS not working after sleep/resume Windows 7
Under Windows 7 on ThinkPads with the F3507g Mobile Broadband Connection, there have been two long-standing problems:
(a) after sleep/resume, the F3507g (Wireless WAN) disappears from the Fn+F5 menu;
(b) after sleep/resume, ThinkVantage GPS does not work (forever displays Fix Type: N/A).
By searching these forums, you can find past threads about these problems, none with a reproducible resolution.
I am pleased to say that the latest driver update for the F3507g (v6.1.10.5 7UW708WW) appears to ameliorate problem (a) in that the F3507g Wireless WAN eventually re-appears in the Fn+F5 menu if you give it a few tens of seconds after a resume. This update is available from:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-73681
However, the non-working GPS after sleep/resume is still not solved. Even though the "Wireless WAN" card is present and shown powered-on in the Fn+F5 menu, ThinkVantage GPS (2.60) is stuck on Fix Type: N/A, and the Windows 7 Weather gadget does not automatically discover the location. Both applications work fine after a full Windows restart, but not after a sleep/resume.
I have, however, discovered a work-around which restores GPS operation without a full restart:
Open Device Manager;
Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers";
Right-click "F3507g Mobile Broadband Device" and select "Disable";
Wait for the system to settle down again;
Right-click "F3507g Mobile Broadband Device" and select "Enable";
Wait for the system to settle down again.
Now you can press Start in ThinkVantage GPS, and Fix Type will quickly change from "N/A" to "No Fix", and then onward to satellite discovery. And after a few false starts, the Windows 7 Weather gadget will discover the location.
The fact that this work-around restores GPS operation indicates that the underlying fault is a driver software issue.
The above symtoms and work-around have been verified on both a ThinkPad X301 and a ThinkPad T400s. Neither have ThinkVantage Access Connections installed. The X301, when previously running under Vista with the previous generation of drivers, did not display these symptoms: the symptoms appeared with the upgrade to Windows 7.Actually mine works fine after applying all the updates available on T400 w/ Windows 7 Pro 64bit. I can sleep/shutdown as much as I want and the GPS works.
By the way, you have to goto your bios to reset your settings to default by pressing F9. Maybe you should try this and see if that solves your problem.
The only GPS related issue that is not fixed is the issue of dual booting into linux. I dual boot into linux, and when that happens the GPS problem re-occurs once I log back into windows. The only way for me to fix the problem again at that point, is if I go back into the bios and hit F9 again, then re-enter windows.
If I were to stay in a windows environment indefiniately, there is no problem. The problem is once I enter Linux, the problem in windows will occur again (maybe the powerstate settings by the linux kernal messes up the settings on the card). -
C55Dt running Windows 8.1 will not go to sleep or turn off when lid is shut
Toshiba Model C55Dt will not go into sleep mode when I shut the lid. Only about 10 months old....will not turn off, either. I have checked and power settings are properly set.
