Nouveau GPU lockup - switching to software fbcon

Hi,
I'm running current Arch on Lenovo W700 which comes with NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M. I configured X using nouveau without problems. I just had to add nouveau to MODULES in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, so keymap and console fonts are not reset after loading udev.
Unfortunately, I'm experiencing the well-known annoying problem: every time I reboot or shut down, GPU locks up:
[drm] nouveau 000:01:00.0: GPU lockup - switching to software fbcon
Here is screenshot.
I searched the forum and it seems there is no one best solution that simply works.
Some mention installing NVIDIA drivers helps, so suggest to switch to nv and downgrade X.
As far as I know, FX 2700M is implemented by nvidia-173xx driver which is no longer supported, apparently.
Is it really that bad and no reliable solution is known?
What about GPU Lockup Recovery For The Nouveau Driver announced on Phoronix in April 2012.
Has anyone monitored development of those fixes and know if they made it into upstream?
Does it mean it's worth trying git version of the nouveau driver? (By the way, where to learn how to build nouveau for Arch?)
UPDATE: A week ago, NVIDIA released New NVIDIA Driver 310.40 which provided support for the FX2700M card. Has anyone tested it yet?

I've switched from nouveay to nvidia 313.26-1 and X automatic configuration works well.
No GPU lockup on shutdown, but reboot prints these final messages and hangs for 2-3 minutes, before actually restarting the system:
All DM devices detached.
[27.313381] hub 5-0: 10: hub_port_status failed 9err = -110)
[27.325891] hub 5-0: 10: hub_port_status failed 9err = -110)
[27.339213] NOHZ: local-softirq_pending 02
[27.372776] Restarting system.
It also seems fan is speeding up at this point.
Would anyone have any idea why final stage of rebooting hangs for several minutes?

Reinstalled with a minimal packages and works ! But openarena is far from fluent. I could play it fluently before. It is compiled to my cpu specs , it should not make a problem.
So the error is because some of the packages does not like to be together......
Next time I should see pacman log to uninstall tha last installed pakages and test which one makes the error !
This time I have suspections to the java headless , but it not sure if its because one package... It can be just a combination of whatever other ones...

Hi. First of all, adding MORE software (SLiM) to a problem is just going to create more confusion, so please stop using it for now. If you can get "startx" to work properly, then you can get SLiM to work without a problem.
Next, if you can login as root but not as a regular user then it might be an issue with permissions, kind of like this. Do any of those posts help?
What are the permissions on the files in your home directory? ("ls -la ~")
What are the permissions on your home directory? ("ls -ld ~")
Do you have an "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file? (You probably shouldn't.)
Feel free to post any of the output here on the forums.

  • GPU Lockup, system crashes and reboot on Radeon op...

Hi, I've been using the Radeon open-source driver for a while (2 weeks) on an AM1 platform. And once in a while the screen just becomes erratic (or filled with crazy lines), then just reboot itself. I've extracted the relevant journalctl output (the one labelled 'kernel') that might help in finding out what the problem is. I've also included the dmesg, Xorg.0.log, and Xorg.0.log.old, though I find there's nothing fishy about it.

  • Radeon xf86-video-ati GPU Lockup

    Hello all,
I've had this issue for a little while. I will be in the middle of doing something and the screen will just freeze. No distortion or anything, just freeze. Freeze for about 10 seconds (I can move mouse cursor around, but cannot select anything). The screen will then go black and the monitor will say the "No signal detected" sort of thing, as if it had gone to sleep. I know the system is still responsive on the 'inside', as I can still SSH into it and any music I had playing (YouTube) will still play, but the keyboard is completely unresponsive (caps lock/scroll lock does not toggle). It appears that the 'F5' key resumes all of this. Now that I think about it, the 'F5' key has to do with refreshing...
Here is a 'dmesg' of all related issues. There is no Xorg log that records this. This shows two different stalls, both while 'Chrome' was open. I believe this also happened while I had Eclipse open, as well as Chrome in the background.

Thanks for the link my friend! I'll check that out, and post back here. I ended up giving up on this for about two months, and literally hadn't started up my computer until yesterday, and between then and now I know how to look for better information much faster and more efficiently.
    Much appreciated,

  • Early 2011 Mac Book Pro (MBP) problem with sporadic AMD GPU automated switching system

I have an early 2011 Mac Book Pro (MBP) - specs are listed below. I have read online about other 2011s having an automatic shutdown problem & sporadic failure re the graphics AMD Radeon HD 6490M GPU automated switching system (among other problems with this "innovation" by Apple). I am having this problem: Shuts down by itself. Restarts - in the middle of the restart shuts down again. Fans are operating just fine. The problem has occurred if a video is playing, if I try to edit a video. It has occurred while using Skype (if the other party puts on their video camera), Firefox & Safari & Google Chrome. It has occurred even if I was working in Word if I was connected to the internet. I am working in a developing country and I have done a PRAM SMC Disk Utility Repair disk had a diagnostic run which showed no problems, etc. There is no temporary fix. Apple now hear this: This is going to morph into a logic board problem and you still haven't done anything about it??? This is an APPLE defect and I am very disappointed in Apple not acknowledging this defect and fixing the problem or issuing notification of a recall. I am outside of Apple Care and I have never had a mac give trouble until the 5 year mark. A 2GB RAM white iMac I gave my Mom is still operating perfectly! I am in the middle of a  climate change mitigation project and a I cannot finish my work due to this problem and I cannot afford to pay for another MBP $2400 doorstop. What is going on here? Steve dies so there is no one to put the fear of God in anyone at Apple anymore and now no one cares  about customer service? Where is the product recall? I have been a loyal Apple customer since 1983. Yes, 1983. DO SOMETHING NOW APPLE & NOTIFY US OF IT - We all registered our computers on YOUR website so you know who we are. Has anyone filed a class action yet?

I had a 13" mid-2012 that had three logic boards fail in less than a year of purchase. My symptoms were it would freeze while using it or after it was put to sleep. When it froze while being used, it would flash pixels in groups in different colors and would become unresponsive to everything but forcing it to shut down. If it froze while sleeping, it wouldn't wake up and it would get extremely hot to the touch. Apple covered the repairs every time but they sent me receipts and each time, it was a $480 logic board plus labor so it would cost about $530 overall. It sounds to me it's your hard drive because I also experienced two hard drive failures. First time was from an accidental drop. I would get a loading bar on startup and once it finished, it would shut down. I couldn't boot into recovery mode at or do anything. But before that would happen, I would get an error in disk utility after performing a disk repair saying it couldn't repair the disk and to back up as much data as I could. Luckily I have the Time Capsule so my data was always safe.

  • KVM Switches and software-controlled mice

KVM Switches will only support the basic functions of a mouse under most conditions.  Any additional functionality that is controlled via software drivers or a mouse manager program, such as MouseWare by Logitech or IntelliMouse by Microsoft can not be guaranteed to work through KVM Switches.  This is due to the emulation software control provides, and the incompatibilities of not having a direct connection from the interface device to the port on the back of the computer.  When control of the interfaces is assigned to another machine attached to the KVM switch, the communication from the interfaces to the other machine(s) is terminated until selected again.
It is recommended to use the Microsoft Generic PS/2 drivers, provided in the Windows distribution, if the mouse is having troubles operating when used in conjunction with a KVM Switch.  Cordless/optical input devices may not function with the KVM Switch, as they are software controlled.
    Source: Linksys KB

I can get along with the idea of losing control of some aspects of the mouse, but one issue I am still fighting is connecting the keyboard/mouse to the PS2KVM4 4-Port KVM Switch.  I have a USB Keyboard/Mouse multimedia desktop from MS.
I looked for and could not find a KVM that uses USB, so I got the PS2KVM4.  It works fine except that the PS2 connectors are too close together to accept any of the USB to PS2 adapters that come standard with USB Keyboard and mouse sets.  I like the versatility of USB and prefer not to have to buy a PS2 keyboard/mouse set.
Is there anyone that either makes a USB type KVM switch? Or a reasonable priced adapter that will fit the connections?  I have located one company that makes such an adapter (Linkskey LKV-PUC01) but I can't see paying nearly the price of the KVM switch (KVM $72.99 adapter $69.99) for an adapter to fit it.

  • Serious question - Is anyone considering switching editing software

I can't believe the demise of FCP7. Is anyone considering switching to Avid or Premiere Pro? I already have the latter, but never used it...
Is it worth learning one of these new pieces of software!?
Cheers & Happy New Year all.

You might get a different answer if you asked outside the Apple forum, where there are a lot of recent blog posts about "how I switched from FCP to ___, here are my tips"
    like this one
    http://www.biscardicreative.com/blog/2011/09/transitioning-fcp-to-premiere-pro-g otchas-part-1/
Just read it and it has this interesting quote
As I’ve noted in my blogs, for the Final Cut Pro editor migrating over to Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5, the transition really could not be much easier. I often refer to PPro as “Final Cut Pro 8″ because it feels like the natural progression from FCP 7.
    Wow.
I wouldn't expect it to be that easy all the time, but still, that's a dangerous quote for Apple.

  • Switch Desktop Software to new Outlook PST

For the new year I created a new Outlook 2010 pst file.  My BlackBerry Desktop software had been set to sync with the previous one.
I tried to add the new one, set it as the default, and remove the old one, but the pop-up indicated that all the data associated with the pst I was removing would be erased from my device!
OK, so I copied the data (calendar, tasks, contacts, notes) from the old PST to the new one, and BB Desktop Software still won't let me choose the one, new PST.  With both folders mapped, the system now wants to double the contacts, appointments, etc.
I did this last year and was able to make it work, but can't remember how.
How do I get the device to sync with just the new PST and remove last year's?
    Thanks.

My concern with replacing it is getting all of the data from the old device onto the new device.  Of even greater concern to me is that the newer devices do not seem to have a desktop software application like the old decives did - if I am wrong about this point, someone please correct me.
In addition to the Data Transfer Assistant, you can simply Export your data from Palm Desktop and Import it into a new Google or Yahoo account.  But, the transfer process using either the DTA or exporting/importing can be messy...fields don't exactly translate from one to the other and while you won't lose anything, you might have a lot of "fixing up" to do.
But more directly to your question, you can still sync your data directly with Palm Desktop, using Chapura Echo, and not even bother with all of the hoopla of moving your data into a Google, Yahoo or other online account.  It is a third-party application which costs $30, and syncs contacts, calendar, memos and To Do's from Palm Desktop via either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.  Synchronizing the Pre to Palm Desktop using Chapura Echo over a wireless network is very slick, and very fast.
Feel free to yell at me for trying to switch to a Blackberry
Since you said so, consider yourself yelled at .

  • Preview slower with hardware GPU acceleration enabled than software only?

Sorry if this had been asked before.
But somehow my preview/playback was slower and choppy once I enable the hardware GPU acceleration(I mean I select the 'mercury playback engine gpu acceleration' under Project-Settings-General')
I followed the following tips to enable my graphic card, (thanks David)

I was working on a clip of approx 3 mins long with majority of the footage(1920 and 720) from a DSLR, some 1920 clips from gopro hd2 and some 1440 clips from a P&S camera(scale to 1920 to match the sequence setting). main effects applied (magic bullet looks).
Before I enabled my graphic card and selected it from the project setting, the preview was ok, nearly smooth all the way except some sections with dynamic links, but once I turn it on, the preview became ridiculously choppy, I couldn't believe my eyes, so I turned it off (select mercury playback engine software only), did playback again, it became much smoother!(or just as smooth as it was when it was under that setting, it's just that comparison gave me a bad impression of my hardware gpu acceleration).
btw: I'm running on a low spec laptop
    Core™ i7-2670QM 2.2GHz turbo to 3.1GHZ
    8GB DDR3 memory
    NVIDIA GeForce 555M 1GB graphics
    750G HDD(I partition to 150G system drive and 600G media drive) 5400RPM (I know, it's slow)
currently have about 80G and 400G empty space on two drives respectively.
15.6” HD display (max resolution 1366x768)
I know the machine is not a proper workstation to work with CS6, but the hardware gpu acceleration was slower than the software only gpu acceleration was beyond my understanding, not a minor difference we are talking about, it was much much slower!
    Have I done something wrong?
    Any tips would be appreciated.

    Here's my guess.
MB Looks runs on the GPU at all times, though not in the same way as Adobe's 'accelerated' effects.  With CUDA off, the graphics card was free to process the Looks effects at full speed.  With CUDA on, PP took some of those resources and Looks processed slower.
Remove Looks and replace it with PP's native accelerated effects and you'll see what all the hoopla is about.

  • Mercury GPU acceleration worse then software acceleration :(

I have to date the latest Premiere, and the latest Nvidia drivers..
    Two GTX 580 cards and a Intel i7 4930k.
The timeline I'm having uses loads of warp stabelizers, AVCHD footage and heavy speedgrade looks with masks and five primarys.
The gtx cards works sweall with Neat video nois, to make that clear (13,5fps on 32bit full 1080p)
With lumetri engine, it drops frames, it only plays perfectly when I turn of Cuda...! (on heavy looks)
And I get export errors on the warp stagelizer in export unless I turn of Cuda?!
Is it a bad Nvidia driver? Should I use a legacy one?
    Thanx grabs and gals!

From other comments around here ... the  "Lumetri Looks engine" and warp-stabilizer do participate in far more than their fair share of playback problems, masks can load the graphics processors too ... oft only "solved" by turning off Cuda or OpenCL with whatever card is there. There've been some folks with mighty expensive aproved Quadro cards .. who get better render times software only. They wasn't too pleased, of course ... and noting you've got two cards ... wishing you all the best ... but everyone's mileage varies these days. Sometimes good, sometimes ... not so.

  • TS4175 Allowed all these files and even switched security software off but photo stream is still greyed out on the icloud control panel on my windows 7 pc. Any other ideas?

    See above

Hi all.  I can’t tell you how to solve your iCloud 3.x issues.  Heck, I don’t think they’re even solvable.
But if you had a previous version of iCloud that was working correctly then I can definitely tell you how to solve the “iCloud Photo Stream is not syncing correctly to my Windows 7 PC” problem.  …without even a re-boot.
Log out of iCloud 3.0 and uninstall it.
Open My Computer and then open your C:\ drive.  Go to Tools/Folder Options and click on the View tab.  Select the “Show hidden…” radio button and click on OK.
    Open the Users folder.
    Open your user folder
    Open ProgramData (previously hidden folder)
Open the Apple folder – not the Apple Computer folder.
    Open the Installer Cache folder
In Details view sort on Name
Open the folder for the newest entry for iCloud Control Panel 2.x – probably 2.1.2.8 dated 4/25/2013
Right click on iCloud64.msi and select Install.
When finished, the synching between iCloud and your PC will be back to working perfectly as before the 3.0 fiasco.  The pictures will be synched to the same Photostream folder as before the “upgrade”.  Now all you need to do is wait until Apple/Microsoft get this thing fixed and working before you try the 3.x upgrade again.
I think the iCloud 3.0 software was written by the same folks who wrote healthcare.gov with the main difference being that healthcare.gov might eventually be made to work.
For those of you who hate to go backwards, think of it as attacking to the rear.  Which would you rather have, the frustration of no synching or everything working on an older version?
    Good luck…

  • CS5 performances decrease when switching between softwares

I am wondering if this is normal. I am using 2 monitors with Canon 5D footage and also clips converted to Cineform using CUDA with a GTX 285.
When i minimize PP CS5 and start another software (Ex: internet browser) and i come back in PP CS5,  the playback is sluggish.
It happens with DSLR and Cineform RT editing presets. Anybody else experiencing this?

The weirdest thing is that PP works amazing and with no issue at all until i "alt-tab" or minimize its window. Then when i come back to it, its playback is sluggish...
I'm really wondering what it is, i tried with a GTX 295 and GTX 285 and it's the same so i guess i can rule out the video card.

  • Orientation switch is now a mute switch after software update

When I updated to OS 4.2.1 on my ipad the switch on the right side changed from being an orientation switch that locks the orientation to a mute switch that kills the sound. I don't need a mute switch, but do need the switch to lock the orientation when I am reading a book.
    Suggestions???
    Thanks,

I don't want this to come across the wrong way, but did you read the [iOS 4.2|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1060] description?
Apple worded the information in a rather cryptic way, so if you missed it, it's understandable. The orientation lock ability is stated as follows: Multitasking support for third-party apps - Multitasking user interface to quickly move between apps, adjust screen brightness, control playback, _lock screen-rotation_, and manage print jobs. While the side switch being the new mute switch is described as follows: Silence background sounds using the _Silent switch on the side of iPad_.

Does anyone know if this looks like a hardware issue or a driver (drm) probelm? Very old card so sort of expecting it to be hardware related.
Strangely I can clear the problem and get into X by fsking the discs from Ubuntu recovery console (dual booting the two) - just thinking whether there's a lock file somewhere not getting cleaned up or something?

I confirm this. I have the same card (NV17 [GeForce4 MX 440]), and I get random lockups with the nouveau driver and a recent kernel. It's probably a memory handling problem in the DRM driver.
