  • Getting a bit frustrated with my mac ;(

Hi, I am getting a little bit frustrated here. Having been sold the imac as a multimedia dream I am struggling a little and wondered if people could offer advice? What I want to do is simple. Create DVD slideshows from photos. Now I know the quality issue between the image on screen at a higher resolution that on a dvd player / tv. Thats not the issue here. The issue I have seems to be render quality??? Anyway - here goes. If I make an imovie I can share it and use expert settings to create a hi resolution .mov file which is more than adequate as when i run it through the dvd software it will lose resolution and look worse off but thats OK - thats dvd quality and I cannot change that. The issue I have is the transitions between photos. There seems to be some quality difference when the transition is running to the actual photo itself. The images "pop" in and suddenly get clearer when the transition is over. Like its compressed more when the transition is being made? Is there any way round this? If I make a slideshow in iphoto then the issue of transitions "popping" out seems to go away but the quality looks much fuzzier and when I export I seem to be limited to 640 x 480? Am I right in what I see? Is there any way around this? If I used Final Cut Express to make my slideshows from photos does it come with transition effects like imovie / iphoto? Will I have any quality issues?
Many many thanks for your replies. At the moment I feel like I have been missold something as the quality is not useable for me and I hope there is something I can do. I have set everything to maximum quality and still have "popping" in image issues! Help!! Thanks.

    Let's try this.
First, lets make sure your preferences and permissions are in shape. Close iMovie and trash the file com.apple.imovie.plist found in User (your name)/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new .plist file on relaunch. Then, before relaunching, do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac. When in the Disk Utility window, click on your hard drive icon displayed in the left top of the window, and then click on the First Aid button, and then click on Repair Disk Permissions. Wait a few minutes until the permissions are repaired.
Next, I want you to set up a small iMovie test project using photos and transistions. When you are finished, save to your desktop and close. Then create a new iDVD project. Drag your iMovie project icon (the one with the star on it) into the edge of the iDVD project's main window. (Be careful not to put it into a drop zone.) You will see the a button with the title of your iMovie project appear in the iDVD window. Your movie is now into iDVD. Save your iDVD project. Then save it as a Disk Image to your desk top from the iDVD File Menu. This will take a few minutes because iDVD is doing the encoding. Once the encoding is done and the disk image is created, open up the Disk Utility app again. If your disk image icon is not displayed in the left hand pane, then drag it in there. Then select it. Then insert a good quality DVD-R disk, like Verbatim, Maxell or HP. Then hit the burn button and wait until your disk is created. After it is burned, play it on a DVD player and see what you think about the quality.
If you want to preview your disk image before burning it to a DVD, click on it twice and a folder will open up. Then click on the icon of your DVD Player app on your Mac. The DVD player will open to display the main menu of your iDVD project. Click on your movie button to play your project. If all is O.K, then go ahead and burn per the above.
What I am trying to give you is a work flow that many users on this forum use with optimum results. You don't need to be sharing anything or using expert settings to create a good quality DVD. Hopefully that will yield a good DVD that plays like you want. You cannot effectively evaluate quality until you view the final burned product. If the results are not satisfactory, then at least you will know that it is not a procedural error, and can go from there.
Yes, you are limited to 640 x 480 when exporting photos from iPhoto, which actually is optimum for a .dv project. More is not better.
Your transitions should be working smoothly, so perhaps the maintenance you did above will help that. Also, be sure that you have sufficient free disk space that iMovie can run efficiently. 25GB is frequently recommended on this forum.

  • Lockup after login. Can I get a bit of help here?

So, this morning I decided I'd reboot my mbp before I started some coding. I rebooted it and came back a few minutes later, logged in, and then it just sat there. I let it sit there for at least 45mins and it did nothing.
What happens after you enter your password in the login window, is the window goes away and the blue swirls background comes up and it just sits there.
I've been working on trying to fix this for at least 5 hours now with no luck. (This is my first mac, so it's been quite an experience, heh.) I did a clearing of the logfiles then replicated the issue.
It seems the the issue could be caused by configd? The system.log file is full of lines like this:
launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/configd"[142]: exited abnormally: Abort trap
    and
launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/configd"[955]: exited with status 1
the log also shows the mds framework exiting abnormally and getting killed.
Anyone know how to fix this so I can get in? Everything works just fine until I log in. I can't afford to do a reinstall right now.
P.S. I'll post log if someone can tell me how to get networking up in single user mode.

Hmmm… I don't know what to suggest to you without take a more drastic action like an archive and install. You big problem to my mind that that it won't safe boot (be sure that it can't as it does take quite some time to boot this way). Additionally I'm off to bed as it's 1am here.
Personally I would have resorted to either a backup/clone else a clean install by now.

  • Helpppp From way over here in Southeast Asia!!!

    Hi guys!
Thanks so much in advance for considering my inquiry...
I recently moved from one house to another and after using the laptop in the new house, everytime I plug in the jack, the whole laptop starts to vibrate....not violently, but consistently, similar to holding a drill in your hand when it's on. This occurs all over the machine. At first I thought it was maybe the fan or hardrive acting up, but realized that when I shut the laptop off, the vibrations continue until I actually unplug the jack. I tried this at my next door neighbour's house also and the same thing happened, plus every wall socket in both houses.
It can be very difficult at times to get an informative answer over here in this continent where PC'S seem to rule and Macs are still somewhat of a novelty, therefore, I feel like I'm an island and nowhere to turn! ;(
I'm afraid to use the computer (although I need it desperately, as my job depends on it), as I'm worried that if I continue to use it, the vibrations will finally take their toll and everything shuts down and crashes. I can't imagine it's doing any good for the components inside??? If I use just the battery it's fine, but of course the battery will eventually die and I'll need to plug it in again to recharge.
I think it may be a power source problem, but is there anybody out there who may have some idea of how to resolve this, before I lose much more income? Has this happned to anyone else??
Thanks again so much for your thoughts, insight and opinions..I really sure could use it right now ;))
    Kind regards,
    Mark

    Dear Friend,
Thank you for the welcome to the discussions board and also for your time in replying with your perspective and thoughts. Well, you wouldn't believe what the solution was to the vibrations.......all that was needed was a piece of carpet under my feet on the tile floor! Too funny eh?
Here in the tropics, people very rarely have carpets in their houses because it's much cooler to have tiles and also to avoid mold and dampness collecting in the carpet fibers. So when you walk around in barefeet in the house and sit down at the computer, there's enough static electricity generating through your body that causes the vibrations when you plug in the jack to the laptop. Sounded reasonable, I suppose, but was still a weeeeee bit skeptical until I grabbed a piece of carpet from the garage. Low and behold - it works!
I also picked up a UPS unit just to be safe also, so now with the combination of UPS, a 3x3ft piece of shag and a pair of thick rubber flip flops for good measure - the problem has been resolved ;))
Thanks so much again for your consideration and your response - very grateful!
    Mark
P.S. My old house actually happened to have carpet, thus never having the vibrating laptop, but when I moved to the new house that just had tiles, that concept never entered my mind...learn something new everyday.

  • USB Over Current Notice - Macbook Pro 2006

I had an external hard drive connected to one of my USB ports, and I think the AC Power adapter it was using flipped out. The drive no longer works at all. The port (front left) does not work with any devices (powereded or not) now, but the other two USB ports do (powered devices or not). I figured I'd have to take it in to the shop if I want to get the dead USB port working again. Or, is that something I may be able to fix? Anybody know?
Everytime I power up the computer now, I get this notice: "USB Over Current Notice, A USB device is currently drawing too much power. The hub it is attached to will be deactivated."
It must be referring to the front left port as a hub, right? And since the other ports are still working, am I correct in thinking that each port must be considered an independent hub from the others?
I find it notable that the dead USB port is reporting to continually be "drawing too much power." Maybe the circuitry is just fried so it keeps reporting it??? I have nothing plugged into the port in question.
Does anybody have any helpful ideas how I can remedy this issue besides taking it in to the shop? Anything I can do through software?

time to re-think cost vis-a-vis reliability of these macbook pros
    *BINGO !*
Plus,... when you live in the middle of nowhere -like me- and that the nearest Apple authorized reseller doenst give the Apple Care service ? (yes ! I swear, not a lie)
Plus, ... when calling the US complaining the bad Apple service in LatAm, there is no reply ..
Plus, ... no way to contact Apple LatAm ( its a continent, right ? ) Apple LatAm is the only location without phone number in the International Technical Support Numbers ..
I feel VERY VERY alone and frustrated. btw I bought the dearest computer in the world, in order to get the best quality and service
If someone could give me a phone number where I could complain about Apple Care in Argentina
    I would be very happy
Thanks for your help/advice Apple people ! http://homepage.mac.com/rdsck/PhotoAlbum24.html

  • I just put snow leopard 10.6.8 on my macbook pro and I was told that I could purchase Apature for photo management- now its says I need a different version.... is there an older version I could get? so frustrating.

I just put snow leopard 10.6.8 on my macbook pro and I was told that I could purchase Apature for photo management- now its says I need a different version.... is there an older version I could get? so frustrating.

The current version of Aperture requires 10.7.5 or later.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

I've recently spilt a little bit of water on my Macbook Pro 13" and some of it went into the keyboard, the first thing I did was get paper towels and dry it off, everything is except now the speakers sound different, and a little bit lower in volume, basically the speakers just sound weird, there's no word to describe it, I can't really hear any bass from my speakers

Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

I purchased photoshop cc a few weeks ago, now I get the message that my trial is over. I'm stuck is there a solution?

Refer Creative Cloud applications unexpectedly revert to trial mode | CS6, CCM
If you use Photoshop at all, you may need to install the latest update to resolve this issue. See this blog post for more information:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2013/01/photoshop-13-0-413-1-2-updat es-now-available.html
If you do not have Photoshop, then try the solution that others have mentioned previously:
Open the Adobe Application Manager (AAM).
If applicable, let AAM complete any automatic updates and restart itself.
Sign in with your Adobe ID. (Optionally, you can close AAM at this point.)
    Open a CS6 application (e.g. InDesign CC).
If prompted (e.g. you get the trial screen), click "License This Software" and sign in with your Adobe ID.
    OR
        Follow the below steps:
    1. Close all the Adobe Applications. Logout from creative.adobe.com and re-login.
    2. Once you launch the software and when you get the error saying the the trial version has expired, you will have an option saying "License this software".
    3. Select this option and enter your credentials and click next.
    4. You must be able to activate the software then.
Refer to: Purchased student CC but CC still says it's a free trial. How do I upgrade my account to purchased and not trial?
I'm a Creative Cloud member, why is my app launching as a trial? Mac OS 10.7.4

  • Is there any way to make my iPod Touch 4G to run faster? When I bought it, it was turbocharged! But now it seems to get a bit slower... Thanks in advance for any help

Is there any way to make my iPod Touch 4G to run faster? When I bought it, it was turbocharged! But now it seems to get a bit slower... Thanks in advance for any help

Periodically delete all apps from the recently-used bar (double clickHome button) and power off and then back on the iPod. With iOS 5, the iPod uses more memory (do not confuse with storage) and periodically you have to reclaim memory for use.

  • HT4910 Feeling a bit frustrated that my contacts, mail, notes & calendar do not appear to be either backing up at all or only partially to iCloud when that was the purpose for using it to begin with. Anyone have suggestions or instructions how to get this

Feeling a bit frustrated with iCloud as it has either not backed up my contacts, mail, notes, & calendar on my phone or only partially. How helpful is that?? It has already resulted in "losing" data for me in my calendar & contacts since I've owned it at the beginning of this year. Would really appreciate any instructions or suggestions others have used successfully to "fix" this problem. Thanks so much in advance for your time & information!

Apple used to strive for smarter solutions but that has changed.
After "upgrading" to Mavericks you can no longer sync device to device with USB or WiFi.
This is so stupid! First, when you travel there are long periods of no WiFi or 3G/4G. Second, cloud-based services are still pretty worthless because it's slow. Third, cloud-based services are still pretty worthless because of low security. Fourth, cloud-based services are still pretty worthless because of low capacity (I have a calendar from my first Newton of 1996 and iCloud can't handle the amount of data).
Why would you prohibit safe and fast syncing via USB??? It's just plain stupid!
Do NOT upgrade to Mavericks if you want to keep your safe and fast sync for Calendars and Contacts.
