NSAPI not sticky in a cluster

Hi!
I am using NSAPI(IPlanet on SOlaris) as web server as proxy and to serve static contents. My application lies on a cluster with two nodes of managed servers. NSAPI acting as a load-balancer needs to follow the sticky algorothm where it should direct the request from same client to the same node. It should use the session id or cookie to identify which server the session should be sticky to. But NSAPI rotates the requests between the two nodes in random. Since my session is replicated, this doesn't log the user out, but this behaviour is undesirable and not according to the bea docs.
Can anyone suggest how to debug this? Is there anything required on the plug-in side to be configured?
Regards,
Manish Agarwal.

Thanks Eric, but I still have not been able to figure this out. There is something
i want to add here, i checked with the vendor hosting our web serevers and he
replied that there is a hardware loadbalancer in front of the three web servers
distributing the requests between different servers based on load. So now that
the hardware loadbalancer is not sticky based on session id and cookie, can NSAPI
figure out which weblogic node did the last request go to.
Does the hardware loadbalancer need to support sticky sessions?

Not possible unless your configurations for the 3 Iplanets are different.
Set Debug=ALL and get the wlproxy.log.

I just want to add that i have three instances of NSAPI as Web-Servers,
could it be possible that requests from client going through differentweb
servers instances cannot be sticky? That IPlanet cannot itself be sticky?

  • Round Robin was not happening for my cluster with WebLogic Proxy Plugin

              Hi,
I configured my cluster with software load balancer, HTTPClusterServlet. By default,
it is load balancing with Round Robin Algorithm. That means one HTTP request
goes to server1, and the other HTTP request goes to server2. However, it is not
what I can see no matter for the requests in one HTTP session or not.
Say I open two browser, and log into my application with two different users,
one is "cyang", the other is "xpression". Then the HTTP request (for servlet/jsp)
from two browsers always go to the same server1, server2 is not invoked at all.
I did see one time, with only one session (one browser with "xPression" user log
in), the most requests go to server1, suddenly I am brough into log in page, then
I noticed that the request for "xPression" moved to server2 although server1 is
still alive. Therefore, at most, I can say it is "Random", rather than "Round
              Robin".
What is the real meaning for HTTP servlet/jsp load balancing algorithm? Does
Round Robin mean request go to each server in turns? Does it have to be different
session or it can be within one session?

It should be sticky. If not, then bug / config error.

  • Session not Sticky with HttpClusterServlet

    Hi,
I am using HttpClusterServlet for load balancing. The cluster is configured to Round-Robin algorithm. As per my understanding, the weblogic implements the Round-Robin with Sticky session.
But the problem I am facing is that the session is not sticky and lost if the application is accessed through the cluster. (There is no problem if I point directly to the Managed instance / If only one managed instance of the cluster is started)
Is there anything o do with weblogic configuration to have sticky session?
Please give me some clue, pointers to move ahead. Thanks is advance.
    Regards,
    Sudhakar P

    Hi All,
By default HttpClusterServlet will manage the sticky session by "HttpSession" object. If you are getting any problem with that, we probably need to debug more.
    1) Can you give me some setup details how you have set it up ..
    2) Also if possible, use Fiddler and get me the fiddler output.
    3) Why do you think that it is not doing sticky session, are you getting flipped to another node and session data is not avaible.
Also some traces of logs when it happen...
    Thanks

    Hi George,
    Thnx for your reply.
I have stopped all Application servers and kept only the CI-DB instances running.Retried deploying the ESS packages but still getting the same error.
Have checked the Visual admin,it is not in SAFE mode,it working normally.
Have alos checked the CLUSTER Manager Property Values in both Visual Admin & Config Tool, they are alright.
About the Cluster Resources, can you pls specify what exactly do you mean by "Cluster Resources are running or not".
I think if the application servers are stopped, then the Cluster resources shudnt come into play right?? Correct me if I am wrong.
Kindly suggest what other steps I shud take.

  • Server failed to run - Reason:Server is not in the majority cluster partition

    Hi,
    my environment is Weblogic 12.1.2.
The deployment configuration is: cluster, 2 machines, 2 managed servers, 1 data source, and JMS (with uniform distributed queue).
When I'm starting the admin server + managed server on the first machine (using the node manager), while on the second machine the managed server and also the node manager are not running, the server failed to run and the error reason is : "Server is not in the majority cluster partition".
How can I enforce the server to run even if the second one is not running ? This scenario could occured because of some local problems on the second machine. My expectation is that after the second will running the whole cluster status will be good.
    Thanks,
    Yaakov

    Hi,
Just to remember the configuration: 2 managed servers configured as cluster that should be deployed on 2 different machine.
    Following summary of the tests:
         - node manager + admin server + 1 managed server running on the first machine --> server failed to init with error "Server is not in the majority cluster partition"
         - node manager + admin server + 2 managed servers running on the one machine --> servers are running without errors
         - node manager + admin server + 1 managed server running on the first  machine / node manager runs on the second machine --> server on the first machine runs without errors without the famous error ' Server is not in the majority cluster partition'.
Bottom line, seems that if the node manager is not running on the remote machine, the cluster is not in a stable state and so the single managed server failed to initialize.
Is it according the documentation / expectations ?
    Thanks,
    Yaakov

  • J_security_check not working in a cluster

We have a cluster set up using two machines (Sun fire 280R) two instances of weblogic
on each machine (and a third for admin on machine 1) the cluster starts up fine,
admin server taken off line, the web app (.war) is distributed and accessable
across the cluster. But when a user tries to log in (using FORM based auth, posting
to j_security_check) nothing happens, just returned to the login page, no errors
no output no nothing. If we remove the cluster and just run the app on a single
server (the admin server) it works fine. Even if we run the app on another managed
server (not part of a cluster) it still doesn't work. It only works on the admin

nothing happens. No errors no messages! its been frustrating as I was

should find any solution to this!

p.s: I also notice that if i keep trying 3, 4 or 5 times and finally
do get in, the httpSession is all confused. Some time its starts 2
sessions! Sometimes is does not replicate properly. And most of the
time if I restart the cluster server it goes works for once or twice
              and does'nt work after that!

  • Recovery scenario - Voting disk  does not match with the cluster guid

    Hi all,
Think of you can not start your guest VMs just because it has a corrupted system.img root image. And assume it contains 5 physical disk( which are all created by the RAC template) hence ASM on them.
What is the simplest recovery scneario of the guest vms (RAC)?
Can it be a feasible scenario for recover of the availablity? (Assume both of the RAC system images are corrupted and we prefer not a system level recovery rather than backup / restore)
    1. Create 2 RAC instances using the same networking and hostname details as the ones that are corrupted. - Use 5 different new disks.
2 Shutdown the newly created instances. Drop the disks from the newly created instances using VM manager.
    3. Add the old disks whose system image is failing to be recoverd but ASM disks are still in use (from the newly created instances using VM manager.) to the newly created instances.
    4. Open the newly created instances
Can we expect the ASM and CRS could be initialized and be opened without a problem?
When I try this scenario I get the folllowing error from the cssd/crsd .
    - Cluster guid 9112ddc0824fefd5ff2b7f9f7be8f048 found in voting disk does not match with the cluster guid a3eec66a2854ff0bffe784260856f92a obtained from the GPnP profile.
    - Found 0 configured voting files but 1 voting files are required, terminating to ensure data integrity.
What could be the simplest way of recovery of a virtual machine that has healthy ASM disks but corrupted system image?
    Thank you

    Hi,
you have a similar problem, when trying to clone databases with 11.2.
The problem is that a cluster is uniquely identified, and this information is hold in the OCR and the Voting disks. So exactly these 2 are not to be cloned.
To achieve what you want, simply setup your system in that way, that you have a separate diskgroup for OCR and Voting (and ASM spfile), which is not to be restored in this case of szeanrio.
Only all database files in ASM will then be exchanged later.
Then what you want can be achieved.
However I am not sure that the RAC templates have the option to install OCR and Voting into a separated diskgroup.

  • Deployment SDM could not start the J2EE Cluster on the host nw4host

    Hello,
I installed the WAS testdrive on Linux SUSE 9.3 and the SNDS on WinXP.
I am trying to deploy the welcome application from the SNDS and get the following error message:
SDM could not start the J2ee Cluster on the host nw4host! The online deployment is terminated. JStartup Framework ist not able to deliver an information about the cluster control instances! Please check the status of the J2EE Engine.
I can start the J2EE Start page on port 50000, the system info shows that dispatcher, server0 and SDM are running. I can start the visual admin with go, the SDM with RemoteGui and the DeployTool.
The comand startsap check nw4host shows, everythings running:

Any idea where the problem could be ?
    Thanks, Manfred.

  • NW4:  SDM could not start the J2EE cluster on the host nw4host

    Hello,
in NW4 i get this error when i try to deploy the welcome webdynpro:
SDM could not start the J2EE cluster on the host nw4host! The online deployment is terminated. JStartup Framework is not able to deliver an information about the cluster control instances! Please check the status of the J2EE Engine.
I am using NW4 (built 28.9.04) on Suse 9.0 and the corresponding IDE (2.04) on Windows 2000.
In the J2EE view of the IDE everything (SDM, Dispatcher and Server) is green. I can start the examples on port 50000. According to systeminfo everything is running.
I searched in OSS and found Note 738402. But there is no EOF in the SDM-logfile. And when i started the J2EE-Configtool the value for "admin/host/SID" is not localhost.
    Any hints?
    Regards,
    Nico.

    Hello,
    > Developer Studio -> Preferences -> SAP J2EE Engine ?
of course. Every icon (SDM, Dispatcher and server) is green in the J22E-View of the IDE. I still get this error message.
    Regards,
    Nico.

Any Idea what can be wrong? we have even restarted de AIX Server and starting all the services and it is still not working.
    Thanx in Advanced!
    Gerardo J

    Hi Gerardo,
I encountered exactly the same error, but had a different solution as I was expecting from the error-message.
In my case I was forced by the Visual Administrator to change the administration password, since the time was up on it. But as the password for the Visual Administrator is saved within the database, the password for the SDM is stored within the secure store (file-system) and changing the password just in VA will not automatically change it also in the secure store. But since both passwords for the internal usage need to be equalized, I encountered problems afterwards when trying to deploy something and I got the same error message. However the sense of restriction is meant here, the solution on it was rather simple as follows (Just note that you need to enter a dummy-password first, before setting the correct one similar to your visual administrator):
    1. create a telnet session to your J2EE using a command line shell
    2. enter "jump 0" to get on the correct node within your J2EE
    3. enter "add user" to gain access to user-specific commands
    4. enter "password <Administrator> <temporarily new password>"
    5. exit
    6. create another telnet session to your J2EE using a command line shell
    7. after succeeded the login, you will now be forced to enter a new password - so enter "password <Administrator> <origin password of the Visual Administrator>"
    8. exit
    9. now start the config-tool of the engine
    10. apply to the DB-default-question with "yes"
    11. select the Secure Store on the left
    12. select the entry "admin/password/..." that you can see it in the bottom lines.
    13. click "Remove" to delete it from the list
    14. set the password similar to the Visual Administrator password within the "Value" line (take care as you can not see the digits).
    15. click "Add" to add it back to the list
    16. click the disc symbol in the top of the UI to save the new password (if you don't get a dialog afterwards that the data has been stored, something may hasn't worked fine when removing/adding the password-entry, in this case repeat the action on it).
    17. After exiting the config-tool, you need to restart the entire J2EE.
    18. Your hopefully finished by success ;o))
    Best regards
    Jochen

  • WLS Cluster Servlet not "sticky" - continuous round robin (WLS 6.1 SP2)

We have WLS serving as a proxy (with HttpClusterServlet) to a cluster of WLS servers
running a WebApp with in memory HttpSession replication.
However, subsequent calls from a browser continue to round robin through the cluster
instead of returning to the same server.
We have enable cookies in the browser.
We have configured replication in the web.xml file.
Is this an issue with SP2 perhaps?
              thanks in advance,
              -Mark

We've noticed this as well, see my recent post. It definetly seems to be different
              from WL5.1.
Sometimes we also see the same HTTPRequest going to BOTH servers in our cluster.
We were testing with only one browser window and one user, and occasionally both
              clusters process the same request.
We are using IIS with the proxy plugin and Round Robin. We installed the WL6.1
verison of the plug in aswell.
It would be great if you could configure WL6.1 to be sticky where one user sticks
              to one server until failover.
