NSS324 raid5 skipped resync after drive replacement

The NSS324 lost a HDD1. While the replacement drive was in the mail, HDD3 developed some bad blocks but is still operational. After replacing HDD1 it does not resync automatically, and we've been unable to select the raid5 volume to perform any actions. After a power failure I can see where the NSS resyncing started again but I don't know why it was skipped.   How can I force the resync?

Hi Steve,
On the NSS under the Disk Management there is an option to rebuild the RAID.  Select your current RAID Volume and select the recover option.   For more information on recovering a RAID please see the admin guide:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/general/Test/rochrist/nss/admin_guide/NSS32X_Admin_Guide_OL_21155_v1.4.pdf
If this does not solve your issue or if you need further assitnace please feel free to contact Cisco Small Business for help on this matter.
Thanks,
Jason Nickle

  • Can't restore latest Time Machine backup after drive replacement- only the very first.

My 13" Macbook Pro running 10.8.5 had a bad hard drive which had to be replaced. After the new drive was put in I tried to restore everything to the new drive with Time Machine but could only restore the first backup I ever did after getting the computer, which was over a year ago.  I can drag and drop files but I would rather have all my preferences and bookmarks etc.  How do I restore the latest backup which was only about a week ago?  Thank you.

Not yet; I'm not sure if Migration Assistant is quite right. Since I posted the question I ran across this youtube video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYUem-QfYBs
which suggests that I need to start up from a bootable external disc in order to restore a Time Machine backup to the same computer that the backup came from when the drive is replaced.  The video actually seems to describe my issue exactly.  The only confusing thing is I don't know why I would have been able to restore the very first Time Machine backup if I need to boot from an external disc.  More investigation needed.

  • Satellite M30-704 boot slow and 0203 failure IDE#2 message after drive replace

    Hi,
    two problems:
firstly after replacing the cd/dvd drive my computer will not now boot automatically and shows an '0203 failure IDE#2' message. I can then boot it but this all takes time?
second problem: before I can access any programme, a message reading: 'apdproxy.exe - Application Error - the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006)' appears twice before I can continue and the computer is then very slow.
Can anyone offer any solutions? (ps - these two problems are not linked as they occurred months apart).
    Thanks, Gardiner

1.) I would say the BIOS cannot handle the new drive properly because of the wrong master/slave/c-sel settings but its strange that the drive runs.
I think you should check in the device manager the primary and secondary IDE channels.
The transfer mode should be set to DMA if available and device type Auto detection
2.) It seems the 'apdproxy.exe is a part of the Adobe Photoshop or similar application.
This software could cause an error. So simply try to reinstall this program

  • XServe Raid won't mount after drive replacement

We had a drive go bad on an XServe Raid.  We replaced the drive.  It went through the rebuilding process. Now we can't mount the raid.  The verify in the disk utility is successful but it still won't mount.  What are we missing?

I have managed to fix the problem (at least it's still going at the moment...). We were just about to return the Fiber Card to Apple, but just before I removed the card from the G5 I had one last look at the settings on the RAID. Previously I had noticed that LUN Masking was on. I didn't take much notice of this before, as I read in an Apple manual somewhere that LUN Masking is always on while the Xserve is initializing the disks. As a last resort I thought to try and force LUN Masking to be disabled. I changed the array to JBOD, so the disks wouldn't be initialized, and entered the advanced settings. I then went to the LUN Masking section and turned off masking for both controllers. I then shut down the Xserve and unplugged it for 10 minutes.
I then turned on the Xserve and the G5 and to my utter delight, the G5 said "Unrecognized disk inserted"! The G5 was finally seeing the RAID.
I then formatted the RAID and everything has been fine since (4-5 hours).
I have no idea how LUN Masking turned on, the masking list had no devices in it, so the RAID was basically disallowing anyone access through fiber. Upon turning masking off, the RAID reappeared on the G5. Apple support said nothing about LUN Masking when I on the phone to them. I guess they though resetting the RAID controllers would reset the LUN Masking, but it doesn't seem to. I repeat: Resetting the RAID controllers does not reset LUN Masking.
All along this was the problem, but no-one at Apple or the reseller we purchased the Xserve RAID from thought of it!
I hope this helps someone out there.

  • CS 5.5 - Restoring Sites after drive replacement

After a drive failure, I upgraded from CS4 to CS5.5.  I've restored my local .html files, but the Site definitions are missing and need to be redefined.  The FAQ on the subject does not make the process entirely clear.  Do I use "New" even though I have both local and remote files?  I know how to reach the home page of my sites.  Will that be enough info?
    Thanks for your help.
    John

Since it is installed on a "new" hard drive, use new to define each of your sites.
When all is well, export your site definitions to storage other than your computer
For example somewhere on your server.

  • Verification error even after drive replaced 3 times

i often burn a DVD and get a verification error. i never had this problem before. i am on my third optical drive (matsushita uj-868).
i even reformatted and tried leopard and snow leopard. no luck the error is inconsistent across many types of media.
any ideas on how i can get this resolved?

Got to the apple store and ask to see a manager. 3 times might be enough to have it replaced - but then it will have the same drive if it's another machine?
Is it failing to burn 4.3gb discs or dual layer?
I'm having trouble with dual layer data discs but CDs and DVDs (4.3gb) are fine.

  • 0203 failure IDE#2 message after drive replacement

My DVD is UJ-820B and i replaced it with the exact same one.
The dif is that the old is FW: 1.00 while the new one is FW: 1.05
    1. Is the only solution to fix pin? If yes can you pls confirm with which pins.
    2. The error IDE#2 means that: DVD bay is on Primary Slave while DVD is Secondary Master or vice versa?
Can you extra please let me know.
If you wish contact me via email at [email protected]

I guess the CD/DVD drive supports another master/slave/c-sel setting.
The IDE#2 error appears because the BIOS cannot recognize the drive correctly.
The problem is that its not possible to change such settings like on a external drives by changing the jumper a special internal firmware controls such settings.
You have suggested that the drive is the same but the firmware is different.
Well, in my opinion this is a reason for the issue

  • Apple Please Help! Fail to burn after drive replacement & OS update

I am hoping that by now, you would find a solution for this. Many of us have been complaining of a similar issue...
I bought my MacBook Pro in March 2009 from Apple, Egypt. Just afterwards there was the OS update to 10.5.6. A bit later, I started having problems with burning DVDs/CDs under Toast. I thought it was a software glitch but it kept on freezing or displaying a hardware error message. I updated to 10.5.7 and the problem still persisted. I repaired disk permissions. Nothing still worked. A bit later, it stopped burning under Finder and iTunes as it froze during burning process. Then, burning with disk utility and finder started working again. I un-installed and re-installed Toast over ten times. I even downgraded to Toast 9. Same problem persisted.
Eventually, I asked Apple to replace my Super-Drive under the warranty when it stopped burning under finder and any other burning softwares (Toast, Burn, etc).
I just got it yesterday, and the same problem with Toast persists. This means that I have No Way to burn Video DVDs or MP3 Discs with folders or Video TS DVDs.
This has been a very inconvenient problem going on since April 2009. I am pretty upset because I'm a very biased user of Apple products and always trust that Apple offers us the top shelf products and the best service. I even worked for Apple Best-Buy (Egypt) as Business Development Manager for a while so I know how the system works. But I am truly disappointed in the lack of attention given to this repeated issue.
Please! At least give us a hint of what this problem is about. Clearly, it's not a hardware issue because the newly-replaced drive is still not working with Burning softwares. Only finder, disk utility & sometimes iTunes.
I will be waiting, patiently, again... in hope to get some productive feedback and finally find a solution for this extremely inconvenient issue.

Ok guys, I've finally found a solution from Roxio. They hadn't answered back for a long time. I found this in their support forums:

  • After Drive Replacement, iTunes Points To Wrong Folder Even After Adjusting Settings

I moved my music to a new hard drive. I then adjusted settings within iTunes to "point" to the folder on the new drive. The folder name is identical as are all the files within it. I did this a few months back and had no issues once iTunes "located" my files. All files played, playlists remained intact. This time however only a small portion of my files successfully "located" and the remaining 75% are unplayable. When "shown in finder", the unplayable tracks point to a completely random folder within my mail folder of obviously non-music files. I've been searching for weeks how to fix this to no avail. I definitely do not want to lose my playlists, play counts, etc. so starting from scratch with iTunes is not an option for me. Please advise how to fix this very odd issue!
    iMac 3.4 Ghz i7
    OSX 10.8.5
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 (just updated)

To resolve this we will need details.  I don't know exactly what is where.  Even though it "worked last time" I see people post with that and almost invariably there is something different in the scenario this time.
The iTunes application alone has no idea where media files are.  You could drag all the media folders you like to the Media folder and it won't know.  You could "point" iTunes to that folder in preferences and it still will never look there.  iTunes knows where files are because as you add them to iTunes it puts them in the Media folder and makes a note in that .itl file where the files are located.  When you try to play a track iTunes looks up in the .itl file which media file it should try to play when you request the track and goes to that location to play the file.  If there file isn't there you get !  You have to mend the links one by one, or iTunes might try, based on you repairing links. to repair other links, but it doesn't usually work that way and is only partly successful at times (as we have already discussed).  If you have ever walked into a store and see an empty shelf but their web site says they have 3 in stock and the sales person says all their stock is out on the shelf, iTunes is like that.
Here's a bunch of links on how iTunes works.  As you can see, an entire library is a whole bunch of files and support folders working in concert and when they get split up iTunes starts misbehaving.

  • MacBook Pro Repeatedly Loads Purple & Teal Stripe, Gray, Light Blue, Bright Blue and Bright Blue Stripe Screens Instead of OS after Optical Drive Replacement by Apple (PICTURES INCLUDED)

17 inch March 26-29 (order date – shipping date) 2011 MacBook Pro, 256GB Solid State Drive, 2.3 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, 1 processer, 4 Cores, 256 KB L2 Cache per core, 8 MB L3 Cache, 8 GB Memory (8GB 1333MHZ DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB), AMD Radeon HD 6750M Video Card, Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 512 MB total of VRAM. 110 GBs of free/unused disk space remaining.
Full Specs are in subsequent post.
The issues described in the title continue even after I’ve reinstalled the operating system twice (Snow Leopard) and installed Mavericks (which is working fine and even faster). I’ve tried many commands to repair this.
If anyone has experienced any of the symptoms above or below, your advice and response will be much appreciated as well as marked. These are the details:
My Early 2011 MacBook Pro has had the typical blue screens, screen freezes and graphics issues since I bought it about three years ago but nothing like this and NEVER any load issues until about a month ago. That was when my superdrive replacement was put in.
Since then my MacBook Pro will go into hard freezes or kernel panics. Then I’ll have to power it down manually and power it up manually. It’ll then refuse to load the OS until after multiple tries. It started out just 2 or 3, then 4 or 5, then 6-12, then 20. Now it takes over 30 boots to load the OS. These boot issues also occur even if it doesn’t freeze, i.e.: when I shut it down or restart it naturally (via the Apple menu, etc.).
95% of the time it’ll load to a gray screen instead of the OS. 4% of the time it’ll load to a light blue screen. Then there are the others: the first time this happened it loaded to the striped purple and teal screen shown in the picture. This happened the next four times then intermittently for about 5 or so more times.
It also loaded gray flickering screens. Flickering screens also occurred right before it froze and had to be manually powered down and up. Then it began to load regular gray and light blue screens and all flickering screens stopped. And then bright blue screens a couple times intermittently for a few days, sometimes with lines. Sometimes it’ll load to a blank/black screen as well. I’d reset the NVRAM and SMC but it still continued, happening multiple times a day, each time taking more and more hard shut downs and hard power ons to finally load the OS.
Until I installed Mavericks, every time it finally loaded the OS Finder began indexing. After Mavericks this has occurred 95% of the time.
After talking to Apple Support they had me do a NVRAM and SMC reset again over the phone. The MacBook Pro refused to load the entire time we were on the phone. After the call it got worse. It froze over 6 times that day and at worse took over 30 boots to load the OS.
I finally had time to deal with it the next day when it froze again. After over 25 boots it loaded and I put in the Snow Leopard OS dvd and ran Disk Utility. I verified the hard drive and it said it was fine. Repaired the disk anyway and it gave this message at the end:
“Updating boot support partitions for volume required”.
Next I tried to start in safe mode and it just hung up for hours. Then started up in single mode and it loaded the OS. It then loaded normally for three times in a row. I reinstalled Snow Leopard. Everything loaded normally. I waited an hour or so and then I downloaded Mavericks. 5 or so hours later Mavericks was installed. Everything hardware wise was fine for a day and all software issues were easily fixable incompatibilities. My Mac was even faster with Mavericks. However, Photoshop did give a perhaps relevant message:
“Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer’s website for the latest software.
GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences.”
(I have OpenGL enabled in Photoshop and it was already checked when this error occurred).
Two days ago I went to Disk Utility to repair permissions while logged in to a non-admin account. Verified and repaired the disk, then verified permissions. Everything fine. After repairing permissions however, it gave a weird error box:
"Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
The box stayed “stuck” in the Disk Utility window. My MacBook Pro then failed to do anything. I manually powered it down and up. It loaded to a gray screen with the error message box again: "Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
It then refused to load anything else but this message box on a gray screen even after rebooting it multiple times in safe, verbose and single modes and after resetting the NVRAM and SMC. I went online with an iPad and entered in the error and got some advice. I tried to run fsck and erase the /var/folders/ via single user mode but it still loaded to a gray screen with the error message. I just decided to skip to the end and Cmd-R loaded into recovery mode and reinstalled Mavericks again. That worked: the message has not appeared since.
Some people have said this error is related to a hard drive cable failure. I know that this cable was tampered with during the optical drive replacement procedures because I watched them do it.
Everything was fine for a day. Then yesterday my MacBook Pro froze while trying to open a VLC file. It took 12 boots to load the OS.  I tried single mode once and verbose mode once. 10 times it loaded to gray screens, even in those mode. A Safe boot lead to a bright blue screen. Finally reset the SMC and it loaded on the 12th time.
Just five hours ago the same thing happened except it took over 30 boots to load the OS. Single, verbose and normal boots, NVRAM and SMC resets lead to gray screens.  Safe boots lead to bright blue screens with and without lines (see pictures). Finally loaded on a normal boot.
I know I should have tried safe booting, verbose, single and recovery modes, disk utility, fsck and other command methods earlier this month but in the end, these methods have not solved the problem anymore than resetting the NVRAM or SMC.
There seems to be conclusive evidence that it’s a hardware problem, stemming from last month, the FIRST AND ONLY time my MacBook Pro was opened up. Maybe it’s the hard drive cable, but it could also be the graphics card and/or logic board (something that’s always been defective on this MacBook Pro, in my opinion). Many early 2011 MacBook Pro owners have given evidence to the latter possibility online.
The first time it started it seemed to stem from me using iPhoto and Photoshop a lot. I had both running continuously for about two weeks. This is another reason for suspecting the graphics card/logic board is at fault (in addition to three years of screen/graphics glitches). And since the card is soldered to the board and the board connected to the cable...I also have serious battery draining issues, something else that got bad after the Apple Superdrive repair. And the battery is connected to the board...
Also, since downloading Mavericks, windows from every app get blurry/fuzzy when I scroll or zoom in. I have read that this is happening to a lot of folks though for various reasons.
I guess it could always be the hard drive. I just don’t know. I’m taking it in to Apple, but can't right away because it’s not local.  I know they’ll be able to run a test on the hard drive. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem (especially the purple and teal striped screen) before they start poking around, possibly creating another problem that goes beyond my Apple Care Plan allotment.

  • Hard Drive Replaced - ITunes now skips?

    Hi everyone!
I posted my saga regarding my iMac G5 and our hard drive problems here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=783309&start=0&tstart=0
NOW - a week after having my hard drive replaced by Apple and finally getting all my settings and programs reloaded - all of a sudden my iTunes has starting to skip during playback like I'm stressing the processor when I do anything like follow an internet link, open/close Firefox or open any other program with iTunes playing.
I never had any issues like this before I had a new hard drive installed...
    Ideas? Anyone?
    2.1GHz PowerPC 20-inch iMac G5 w/iSight, 1.5GB RAM, 250 GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   13" MacBook, 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo, 60GB

You might want to check with "Activity Monitor" (in your utilities folder) to see if there is something either "hogging" processor time or making heavy use of the HD, melzieb.
Once Activity Monitor has started open up the identically named "Activity Monitor" window, from the windows menu (if it is not opened automatically) , select "active processes" in the drop down box at the top of the window.
Click on the "CPU%" button in the bottom of the window to see a graph CPU activity etc.
One likely culprit is a process called "mdimport". This is directly associated with spotlight indexing proces, consumes both CPU and HD time, and is a common cause of slowdowns after HD replacement until Spotlight indexing has been completed etc.
Another possibility may be a "hung up" printer - Look for printmonitor or "printjobmanager" processes, or the like.
    Cheers

  • How can I get my music from my Itunes library after I replaced my hard drive?

How can I get my music from my Itunes library (purchased and downloaded (CD)) after I replaced my hard drive?  Same account name.  My other computer see's old and new music.  Can purchace new songs.  They show up by themselves.  Can connect IPOD and old songs show up.  Seem's like they are defined as different accounts.

They will only be where you put them.

I am a super computer novice. I picked up my computer yesterday after having the recalled Seagate hard drive replaced. I backed up my computer using Time Machine before I took it in on a Seagate "Backup Plus" portable hard drive.
Now, when I have tried to use the restore start up, the computer recognizes that my drive is connected, but says there are no files on that drive it can use to restore the system.
I can see that there are 50GB on the disk, and when I look in it, there are files called "Macintosh HD" so that makes me think that my stuff is in fact on my external drive. why can't my computer see it?
Do I need to get a FireWire cord to connect to my computer?  I'm using the USB 3.0 that came with the hard drive.
My computer had Mountain Lion when I backed it up. I think it is back to whatever OS it came with originally. Do I need to update to Mountain Lion?  If I do, how do I do so without having to pay for it again?  My app store is empty since my computer was wiped.
Thanks for the help, I really need it!

The first thing to do is upgrade back to ML, which you can easily do.  Just redownload ML from the app store with the same AppleID you used the previous time you purchased the ML upgrade.  Your purchase is tied to the AppleID you used when buying, so you can download it again (as many times as you wish) without payment as long as you use the same AppleID.
Once you have upgrade it to ML, then try the restore from the backup (which I gather was made when while running ML before).

  • MacBook Pro won't reboot.  Get spinning circle even after hard drive replaced at Apple Store

MacBook Pro won't reboot.  Have to reinstall OSX each time I shut down in order to get it to start up.  What could be wrong?  I had the hard drive replaced already.

You shouldn't be using the disc at all. I thought I had made that clear. Boot from your recovery partition and run Disc Utility. If you get the same result -- the internal drive can't be repaired -- then you should consider replacing it. No storage device can be trusted, in my opinion, after throwing an error like that. But whether you choose to replace it or erase it, you have to get the data out first.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from your recovery partition (10.7 or later), a local Time Machine backup volume (10.7.2 or later), or your installation disc (10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive.

    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
