NTFS Partition Doesn't Allow Programs To Access It [SOLVED]

Hello all,
First of all, I have finally returned to Arch after several years of using Linux Mint. It feels good to be back in a bloatware-free environment, and I'm enjoying my 1 second boot times! Unfortunately, this hiatus has caused me to lose much of my former Linux knowledge base.

The Situation:  I have a separate hard drive formatted to NTFS, which I use for my file storage on all of my OSes (I have 4 right now, including Windows 8).
The problem:  Despite configuring the mountpoint (/media/aaron/data) to mount under my user, aaron, and the 'all' group, other applications do not have any access to the /media/aaron/data directory. Because of the fact that it is NTFS, and I am multibooting with Win8, I cannot simply chown the directory and subdirectories to my name. Instead, I had to amend the /etc/fstab to mount the directory under my user and group, which is where I believe my problem is.
Background:  I have searched for hours on the internet, including the Arch forums to find a solution and the best I have found is a post here (answer #1) which at least allows me to access the directory through the file manager (Dolphin). I first noticed the problem when trying to download a torrent file using ktorrent. Ktorrent spat out the following message:
Cannot create /media/aaron/data/Downloads/wattOS-R8-32bit-mate.iso: Permission denied
Now, I think I have isolated the cause, however I have no idea how to fix it. I believe the cause is that only owner has permission to view and modify content. Group has permission only to view content. Other has no permission whatsoever. I believe that I need to somehow allow all of the users to have read and write privileges. It would be a simple chown, if it weren't for the fact that the FS is NTFS. I need some amendment to my fstab that will achieve this result, but I have a limited understanding of the various fstab options and masks.
My fstab file reads as follows:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
# /dev/sda5
UUID=b1b2ca8c-e7fc-42a2-aabb-a2c3208c2a65 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
# /dev/sdb3
UUID=7381274f-2aea-4960-a45e-4fe2c7afac9f none swap defaults 0 0
# /dev/sdb1 DATA on /media/aaron/data
UUID=B64C82184C81D391 /media/aaron/data ntfs uid=1000,gid=100,dmask=027,fmask=137 0 2
it is /dev/sdb1 that I am configuring, and the options shown above are what allow me to access the directory using my non-privileged account.
I am sure I have probably forgot something, forgive me, it has been quite a long time now! Thank you all in advance, I appreciate anyone who takes the time to give this a wee bit of thought!
Let me know what information you require, and I will see it delivered promptly,
HPG

UPDATE:
I installed the package ntfs-3g to my system, as per the  Arch Wiki instructions, and then set the fstab options as follows:
UUID=B64C82184C81D391 /media/aaron/data ntfs-3g uid=aaron,gid=users 0 0
Just setting the uid and the gid alone allows permissions to be granted to all groups, so this is obviously not a solution for a multiuser system. As for a single user setup - it is perfect.
cheers,
HPG

  • NTFS Partition Issues not allowing install on MBA 2012, Win 8.1

    MacBook Air 2012, Mavericks & Windows 8.1 install
    Hi there,
    I am going mad trying to install Windows 8.1 from a USB drive via BootCamp. I have made the ISO Windows 8.1 installation disk. I have downloaded the appropriate driver files & seem to be doing everything right. However when I get part way through the process after selecting the Window partition size (40GB) I am running into problems.
    When I go to install Windows to the BootCamp partition I get the error message that "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTSC". Formatting it does not help & when I refresh it still gives the same message. I have deleted the partition & created a new one but still cant proceed.
    In disk utility, I can see that it is formatted in NTFS but no matter what I do it will not proceed & gives me an error message. The other error message that I get is "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information see the setup log files".
    I have searched the net but not found an answer to this problem. I am desperate to get this fixed. Thanks in advance.

    I got stuck at the same spot.  Once I removed my USB flash drive, it let me continue

  • Public Folder doesn't allow Guests to Access?

    Hey, I just bought a MBP 17", and I have a Mac Pro. I was trying to configure file sharing between the two... Now, I was able to configure the file sharing on both, and I was able to access the Mac Pro's public folders from the MBP as a Guest, however, the Mac Pro couldn't access (or even view) the public folders on my MBP, even though it could see the MBP for network access.
    I was able to access by logging in as my MBP user... but does anyone have an idea why the public access on the MBP doesn't work as simply as it should? Perhaps is there a securiety or sharing setting I'm over looking somewhere?
    Much appreciated.

    Yes, I checked, the guest access is enabled, and I also checked the read access for the folder and it is enabled for everyone.
    The Mac Pro still cannot get access as a 'guest.'

  • TS4036 How Can I re-enable my disabled from my Computer(the Ipad doesn't allow me any access to the Ipad)

    How can I re-enable a disabled Ipad from my computer?

    By not allowing enough time to reset, do you mean you have tried a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears, ignoring the red slider?  If so, are you able to power down just using the power button?  Does it then restart on its own?
    If you cannot get it to reboot, stay powered down, take it to an Apple store genius bar and have the technicians test it to see what is wrong...that is most likely a hardware issue.

  • ICE_SERVICE portal user doesn't allow an anonymous access to KM content

    When we upload files (e.g. image files) into root/documents/MyFolder repository they get a /irj/go/km/docs/MyFolder/* link. After that they can be seen by an anonymous users.
    But every day at 9AM ICE_SERVICE portal user modifies all files in /documents/MyFolder folder and transform /irj/go/km/docs/MyFolder/* file link into /irj/servlet/prt/prtroot/ (we can see that in file Details window). After that an anonymous user lose permission to access the files of the repository.
    How to prevent such behavior or to workaround this?

    It might be happening due to configured ICE Online Exchange so, check following....
    Go to Content Management -
    > Content Exchange -
    > Syndicators----
    > Offers     there you'll see list of offers just delete them if not needed , this might solve the issue...

  • Firefox updated to 19.0 and doesn't allow me to access the drop down menu.

    when I'm in Firefox 19, I see the dropdown menu, but can't access it. When I click on it, nothing happens. There is no special code behind this, as it works in other browsers. I've tried using safe-mode and the same thing still happens. I'm using Windows 7 and firefox v 19. This dropdown worked on previous versions of fireFox.

    As the developer of the site in question, I can shed some light. The SELECT was not generated by javascript. However, I have found the piece of offending code. The SELECT is paired with text inside a UL, the jquery UI .sortable() was called on the UL, and because each LI is a drag-and-drop element, .disableSelection() was also called. The .disableSelection() is what made the SELECT stop working. Unfortunately, because the page is only used in summer months, I can't say exactly when it was "broken", but the page in question was working fine in October.

    My iPod 3rd gen 32gb won't allow me to see my "Saved Photos" because the "Albums" banner covers it. This occurred with last week's update.

    I've read that the only cure is opening the Multitaskbar by double clicking the home button, search for the photo app, tap on it until it starts to shake and hit the little "Minus-icon" in the left corner. Then close the bar again and try again to open the photo app.

    There's not much you can do at this point. If you changed the passcode since the last time you synced, or the computer you were syncing with is not available, then there's no way to bypass it. You're going to lose the information.

  • Problem accessing mounted ntfs partitions

    Hi,
    I have problems accessing ntfs partitions as a non root user. The user trying to acces the partition is in usergroup wheel and has sudo acces.
    /etc/fstab looks like this:
    /dev/sda5 /media/winC ntfs defaults 0 2
    /dev/sdb1 /media/winD ntfs defaults 0 2
    It does not matter where I mount them (e.g. /home/user/media/winC), if i try cd-ing into the directory, it tells me:
    cd /medi/winC
    -bash: cd: /media/winC: Permission denied
    When i try the following, it tells me:
    sudo cd /medi/winC
    sudo: cd: command not found
    which I find a bit strange, but ok.
    Any pointers what I am doing wrong? cd-ing as root works, but i would like to acces it as a normal user too. Using the following options did not work for me:
    rw,suid,dev,exec,auto,users,async
    mount -l tells me the following when using the options stated above:
    /dev/sda5 on /media/winC type ntfs (ro,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,uid=0,gid=0,fmask=0177,dmask=077,nls=utf8,errors=continue,mtf_zone_multiplier=1)
    Thanks for any pointers!

    You should use ntfs-3g instead of ntfs.  I'm not sure if that will solve this problem, though it might, but it will prevent others.
    As for "sudo cp" failing, that is not odd at all: `cd` is not a program, it is a shell builtin - there is no `cd` binary for sudo to execute.
    Thanks for the explanation. I will try ntfs-3g as soon as I manage to connect to the internet again.

    == This happened ==
    A few times a week
    == Not sure when it statrted

    Hi.
    When this happens, please press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and see how much RAM and CPU Firefox is using. If they're sky high, then... Well, that kind of issues are, unfortunately, more common and the we'd like. Thankfully, 99% of the cases are very easy to solve. However, you do need to diagnose what your exact problem is. Do this:
    #run Firefox in safe-mode to disable all extensions and plugins. If this fixes your issues, be them with RAM or CPU usage, then you know it's a problem with plugins or extensions. Proceed to number 2. If safe-mode doesn't fix the issues, then read bellow, after this list;
    #update all extensions and plugins in your Firefox. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #disable all extensions and plugins in your Firefox (not running safe-mode). Being certain that, as in safe-mode, the problems you're having have gone away, enable one plugin at a time. You should be certain that you WANT that plugin to be enabled, so keep your overall number of plugins as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic plugin, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all plugins (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all.
    #enable one extension at a time. Again, be certain that you WANT that extension to be enabled, so keep your overall number of extensions as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic extension, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all your extensions (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all;
    #you're done! You've fixed your problems with problematic add-ons.
    Ok, if disabling all extensions and plugins through safe-mode didn't work to bring Firefox's CPU and RAM usage to good levels, then you have different issue. The most likely scenario is that you have a third party software running on your computer that is messing with Firefox. Do as follows:
    #do a virus/malware check on your computer. If this doesn't fix it, proceed;
    #disable all software running in the background that you don't want to have running in the background (in windows, this is done by pressing WINDOWS+R in your keyboard, typing "msconfig" (without the commas) and pressing enter. Now, under the "Startup" tab, you can uncheck the software you don't want, and reboot your system for changes to take effect. If you're unsure of what software you want running, ask someone with more experience). If this doesn't fix you issues with Firefox, proceed;
    #check your firewall/antivirus/security suite for enabled functions/features that you don't want and/or may be conflicting with Firefox. You'll find that these features are most likely tied to Internet Security features, such as link scanners or URL checkers and the like. If you're not sure they are conflicting with Firefox, simply try to disable to see whether or not that's true. As long as you don't browse the web with your antivirus completely off and your firewall completely turned off, there should be no problems. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #check your operating system security options, mainly advanced options that are not configured by default. While it's very unlikely that this may be the cause of the problem (after all, it's the last item on the list), it's remotely possible. If this doesn't do it, I'm out of ideas. Except make sure you've followed my instructions correctly.

  • GRUB doesn't detect NTFS partition

    I recently installed windows to my second hard disk (/dev/sdb2 or (hd1,msdos2)), but GRUB fails to recognize the NTFS file system on it.
    GRUB> ls
    (hd0,msdos1) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos3) (hd0,msdos4) (hd1,msdos1) (hd1,msdos2)
    GRUB> ls (hd1,msdos1)
    Partition (hd1,msdos1): File system type ext* # etc
    GRUB> ls (hd1,msdos2)
    Partition (hd1,msdos2): No known file system detected
    And yet there is a fully-functioning NTFS file system on this partition. Why do I know this? Because when I boot the entire hard disk from within QEMU, suddenly...
    GRUB from within QEMU> ls (hd1,msdos2)
    Partition (hd1,msdos2): File system type ntfs # etc
    ... and windows successfully boots from the disk.
    I realise QEMU is not really comparable to BIOS, but I wonder why GRUB fails to recognize this single one NTFS partition, while it does recognize the other ext4 partition... Now, this isn't currently a severe issue, since I'm simply booting the windows partition with QEMU. The main reason I need to boot windows is to run some graphics-heavy programs, and as far as I know, QEMU can't do Direct3D emulation (or hardware acceleration?).

    Hmm, I don't think that could be the cause, I've tried insmod'ing all the necessary deps but to no avail... grub simply doesn't see the ntfs partition...
